Gaim is definitely darker and edgier than the installments before it, but trying to determine if it's darker than shows like Ryuki (which has a scene where a serial killer threatens a little girl with a loaded gun) and Faiz (which has a schoolgirl bullied and driven to slaughter her classmates) is pointless and subjective.

** Had Urobuchi remove all of its lighthearted moments, Gaim becomes a full-blown Tragedy to the point of being the darkest and goriest Rider show in the franchise's history, surpassing 555, Ryuki, Kuuga, and Black in the process.

** To give you an idea of just how dark this series managed to get, prior to this series airing, the darkest live-action entry was Film/ShinKamenRiderPrologue, which featured rampant BodyHorror, the rider's powers being the result of genetic alteration as opposed to being a cyborg or using other powers, had an AntiHero rider as the lead, and [[spoiler:aside from the main character, the only named character to survive was Shin's gym buddy]]. After this series aired, Shotaro Ishinomori's manga works and Creator/HideakiAnno's remake Film/2023 were the only things darker, and the two reboot series able to out-trump Gaim as the darkest entries in the entire franchise are none other than the explicitly adult-oriented Amazons and BLACK SUN.

** The Kamen Rider Zangetsu Gaim Gaiden stageplay somehow manages to take the bleakness and severe tone UpToEleven: the setting its events takes place in outright replaces the street dancing and Mons battles of Gaim with a straight-up Hunger Games-style death battle, where practically every named character (even the Kouta Expy) has committed at least one murder by the time the story even begins and they just accept killing as a fact of life. ** Minato/Kamen Rider Marika is quite badass, but it's more impressive once Kouta starts utilizing the Energy Lockseeds (assuming that the Jimber Arms work for him like the Energy Arms work for the original users). The Peach Lockseed doesn't give the strength of Lemon or the speed of Cherry, and the super hearing it bequeaths could be used against the user. That means that Minato manages to be that tough by relying on her own skills to make up for less powerful armor, despite every sound around her being cranked UpToEleven.
