Rick tries to contact Morgan Jones on his walkie-talkie to let him know that Atlanta is not safe, while the rest of the group is still reeling from the aftermath of the attack on the fish fry the previous night. The bodies the deceased are dealt with by a blow to the head from a pickaxe to ensure that the brain is destroyed; Rick approaches Andrea, who is sitting vigil over her sister's body, to remind her that Amy must be dealt with in the same way, but she pulls a gun on him and he backs off. Meanwhile, Glenn tearfully rebukes Daryl for attempting to throw one of the deceased survivors onto a pyre to be burned with the walkers, insisting that they bury their own. Jacqui discovers that Jim was bitten in the attack and reveals this information to the rest of the group, despite Jim begging him to keep it to herself, and new tensions arise as the group debates how to deal with this latest issue. Daryl advocates dealing with Jim in the same way as those who have already turned, and Dale reluctantly agrees that this may be the best course of action; however, Rick stops Daryl when he attempts to kill Jim, reminding him that they don't kill the living.
With the camp in disarray, Rick and Shane come to blows over what their next course of action should be. Rick argues that they should head for the nearby CDC facility in the hopes of finding a cure for Jim, while Shane is doubtful that such a cure exists and insists that they should set out for the military base Fort Benning. Meanwhile, Amy reanimates as a walker, forcing Andrea to shoot her in the head, and Jim's condition worsens as he slips into a state of feverish delirium.
Shane attempts to persuade Lori to talk Rick out of heading for the CDC, but she opts instead to back her husband, pointing out that Fort Benning is much further away and it's unlikely they will be able to reach it with the amount of gas that they have. While doing a sweep in the woods surrounding camp, Shane catches Rick in his gun sights and briefly considers shooting him, but stops when he notices Dale watching him.
When the group eventually settle on the CDC as their destination, Morales announces that he and his family are going to head for Birmingham, Alabama instead, in the hopes of re-connecting with relatives there. Rick gives them a gun and some ammunition, and they part ways after saying their goodbyes. En route to the CDC, Dale's RV breaks down; while it is being fixed, Jim has a brief period of lucidity and asks to be left behind so that he can be with his family, who were all killed by walkers prior to the events of the series. Respecting his final wish, the group leave him under a tree by the side of the highway and continue on their way.
The focus abruptly switches to the video transmission of a scientist named Edwin Jenner, who appears to be working with the CDC. Jenner reports that it has been 63 days since the disease went global, and there has been no clinical progress. He then dons a biohazard suit to do experiments on some diseased tissue; however, he is forced to decontaminate after a spillage, and the process leaves his samples destroyed. On the transmission, he laments the loss of his best specimens and casually mentions that he is considering suicide.
Meanwhile, Rick's group reaches the CDC facility to find it surrounded by corpses, and are unable to gain access. The group begins to argue again as darkness approaches and walkers begin to emerge, with Shane and Lori urging Rick that they need to leave. As Daryl attempts to hold back the increasing horde of walkers, Rick notices one of the security cameras moving and starts banging on the door, pleading with whoever is inside to allow the group access.
