* INeverSaidItWasPoison: During a conversation with Barbara, the mammy maid Melinda notes her distrust of Renee, since she obviously has eyes for another. When Barb insists that there's nothing between Renee and Larry, Melinda points out that she never mentioned Larry. This is the only {{Foreshadowing}} that Renee and Barbara were secret lovers.

* JerkassWoobie: As [[SirSwearsALot crass]], grouchy and selfish as Buddy (Dennis) is supposed to be, he's also clearly bitter that his promising pro football career was cut short by an on-field accident leaving him paralyzed him from the waist down. By the end of the play his father has died, he's been cut out of the will at the last minute, his {{Gold Digg|er}}ing girlfriend was cheating on him with ''both'' of his siblings and both he and Larry were used as patsies in her and Barbara's scheme to take over the family business, leaving him with nothing but pain and estrangement toward his brother.

* GirlOnGirlIsHot: When it's revealed that Renee (Vanessa) is having an affair with Barbara (Sandra) and worked with her to get the family business for herself, Robert (who's voicing the dog) lasciviously voices his thoughts on the matter. Vanessa hastily silences him.

* FakeAmerican: The play is set in the Burgess family home in Tennessee, with the Cornley actors attempting Southern accents to match. Some attempts are more decent than others.

* ThisIsGonnaSuck: The actors are not pleased with having to deal with the 'uniquely-built' sets. Robert's delivery noticeably wavers when he asks the others to join him in the study, Vanessa's eyes widen in horror when Max (in-character) asks Annie to bring in some gazpacho, and Max lets out a horrified "oh no" when he realises that one set was built ''upside-down''.

* TalkingAnimal: Ruffles the dog isn't supposed to be one, but Robert, who's controlling/"playing" him, isn't content with just "doing dog noises" and insists on giving Ruffles an InnerMonologue that eventually becomes full speech by the play's end (much to Chris' ire).
