* GreatAccomplishmentWeakCredibility: Rimmer gives Captain Hollister a startlingly accurate report on potential drive plate malfunctions. However, Hollister is immediately suspicious given that Rimmer has made a name for himself as an incompetent dolt who constantly fails the astronavigation exam. He's right to be dubious, as it turns out: Rimmer is using files taken from Starbug's computers to make himself appear cleverer than he really is. [[spoiler: Unfortunately for Rimmer, Hollister takes the opportunity to drug him and put him in the VirtualRealityInterrogation with the rest of the Dwarfers - though this isn't found out until part 3.]]

* ImagineTheAudienceNaked: Kochanski encourages Kryten to stand up to people by imagining them on the toilet. When it actually comes down do it though, he can't manage it. So he forces them, at gunpoint, to go sit on the toilet so that he can laugh at them and have the courage to say that 'No, he does not want to be reset to factory settings'. For some unaccountable reason they decide to do it anyway.

Knowing that without the nanobots to corroborate their story, they are certain to be sentenced to two years in the brig, Lister and his friends make plans to escape from custody and find the missing nanobots.

!!This episode contains examples of:
* CallBack: References re made to Dwayne Dibley, Future Echoes, and a universe where time runs backwards.
* FunWithAcronyms: Rimmer refers to his plan as "Get Rimmer Officerhood, Power & Eminence", or "GROPE" for short.
* OhCrap: Rimmer's face visibly falls as Hollister reveals that Lister and co are all in their artificial reality trial already, and that this could lead to Rimmer's own criminal activities being exposed.
* SelfDeprecation: When Rimmer first makes his report about a faulty drive plate incident to Hollister, he mentions that anyone who could botch this job would need to have "a brain the size of a leprechaun's left testicle". Since we know for a fact that Rimmer is the one who botched it up the first time...
* SixthRangerTraitor: Rimmer betrays Lister so he can exploit the confidential files and Lister's diary of weird space phenomena to impress Hollister and become an officer, arguing that if he helps Lister get away, it might endanger his chances of doing so.
