* NotSoDifferent: On the way to Nebulandia, [[TrueCompanions Luffy and Foxy share similar opinions about their crew mean to them]] and after the their victory Foxy clearly has much greater respect for Luffy and his crew.

* WorfHadTheFlu: The island's effect pretty much nerfs Luffy's power who would've otherwise easily plowed through Komei's obstacles. Once the plants are burned and the water drained from the island, Luffy quickly takes Komei out with no problems.

* AnimationBump: In some shots, the crowds of Marines are [[ThreeDEffectsTwoDCartoon rendered in CGI]]. This is generally done well enough to avoid conspicuousness. The special appears to have a larger animation budget than the TV series, too.

In 2019, Funimation revealed that the special will be dubbed, with the Blu-Ray set to come out in June of that same year.

* ButtMonkey: Being on Luffy's side doesn't change Foxy's Butt Money status very much.

* GenreSavvy: The Straw Hats knew that Foxy would be back to his old ways once his crew was back. Though at least this time they left on better terms.

* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: Komei apparently anticipated most of Luffy and Foxy's moves for the majority of the special, and disguises his traps as BondVillainStupidity. He starts his plan be incapacitating the strongest members of the crew, he knows exactly how to counter Luffy's moves when he tries to grab onto his ship (using slippery oil so it can't be grabbed and reflecting Foxy's Slow-Slow beam back at him to help him escape), he tells the Straw Hats which mushroom he used so that they'll get killed by the giant snake it grows on, and lures the rescue party onto an island that renders Devil Fruit users (the strongest remaining members on their crews) useless.

* TheMole: Turns out that Kansho, the new member of the Foxy pirates who tagged along to rescue Porche and Hamburg, was actually a marine working for Komei all along.

* NearVillainVictory: Komei is probably one of the few foes next to Borsollino that almost cause the eradication of the Straw Hats. It's only thanks to an oversight on his part (see "Didn't See That Coming") and a lot of luck on his opponents' end that his victory is robbed from him.

* EldritchLocation: Nebulandia is a bad place to be if you've eaten a devil fruit, as it's full of dangerous plants that target you and a mist that takes away all their strength. Komei uses it to his full advantage to cripple Luffy and Robin.

* DidntSeeThatComing: Komei actually almost won at the end as he managed to capture Zoro, Sanji, Robin, Franky, Usopp and Nami and nearly drowned Luffy. But he didn't take into account that the "call" of Chopper and Brook's capture could've been faked, and it ends up costing him at the endgame when the two show up with the remaining Foxy Pirates and free and revive the rest of the Straw Hats and Foxy.

* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: The Mushroom Snake Chopper and Brook run into helps them out when they pull off one of the Marines' bear traps it had ran into and Chopper heals his injury.
* BigDamnHeroes: Just as it seems all is lost for Luffy, Foxy and the Straw Hats. Chopper, Brook and the rest of the Foxy Pirates arrive on the Mushroom Snake they had saved earlier to come save them.

* CanonDiscontinuity: The special ignores all the anime-only events involving Foxy, such as the Foxy pirates taking Robin as their crewmates and the two times he crossed paths with them again. In particular, Franky is surprised to see Foxy's Slow-Slow powers despite having seen them before at Spa Island.

* NonSerialMovie: This special can't fit into the manga continuity, as the Straw Hats are already in the New World (which took them directly from Punk Hazard to Dressrossa to Zou) but have their pre-Punk Hazard wanted posters. It could be slotted between Z's Ambition (and Film Z) and Punk Hazard if it weren't for the canon discontinuity mentioned above.
