As a teenager, Dale thought he was one of the popular kids because he won a dare that involved eating bugs, until he heard one pretty girl call him a freak. It was at that moment he realized the kids never saw him as cool but only as a freak show for them to gawk at and he doesn't want Bill to go through the same thing he did. Sure enough, during the competition, a pretty woman in the audience calls the competitors freaks and Bill realizes Dale is right, so he forfeits.
