Three years since we last saw the Midnight Society, Gary, Betty Anne, David, Kristen, Eric, Kiki, Frank, Sam and Stig have gone their separate ways. Tonight, however, Gary’s brother Tucker returns, closely followed by Quinn, Megan, Andy and Vange. Tucker invites them all to find a log to sit on; repairs the stone chair, takes a seat, and opens the first meeting of the new Midnight Society. As he speaks, the campfire, seemingly of its own accord, whooshes into life. From a nearby hollow tree stump, he takes the pouch of Midnight Dust. Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, he calls his story “The Tale of the Forever Game.”

Three years since we last saw the Midnight Society, Gary, Betty Anne, David, Kristen, Eric, Kiki, Frank, Sam and Stig have gone their separate ways. The trail to the woodland clearing has been closed off. Tonight, however, Gary’s brother Tucker returns, closely followed by Quinn, Megan, Andy and Vange. Tucker invites them all to find a log to sit on, repairs the stone chair, takes a seat, and opens the first meeting of the new Midnight Society. As he speaks, the campfire, seemingly of its own accord, whooshes into life. From a nearby hollow tree stump, he takes the pouch of Midnight Dust. Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, he calls his story “The Tale of the Forever Game.”

One autumn day, Peter, younger sister Monica and friend Mark bike through the woods. Monica suffers a crash landing. Mark asks if she’s okay; Peter irritably disdains her lesser speed. As he resumes peddling, Monica asks Mark about Peter’s attitude.

-->'''Mark:''' He used to be like that to me too… ‘til I proved I was as good as he was.\

Further along, Mark and Monica lose track of Peter. Monica slows, and calls for her brother. For a laugh, Peter jumps out and shouts “bleurgh!”

Mark thinks they should head back. Peter pulls back an overgrowth of branches, and gestures to a rightward trail. On its lonely path lies an abandoned bike. The ride down it.

Further along, they find another abandoned bike, this one badly rusted. They pass a short, gnarled tree - and some time later, find themselves back before it. And later, they find themselves back.

Peter suggests they each take a different path. Reluctantly, Mark and Monica head off in separate directions. As Peter lingers, ‘’something, from between the treetops, watches him’’. Curious, he approaches the gnarled tree. As his hand touches it, his entire body, with a flash of white light, warps, ripples, and is dragged, seamlessly, into the tree.

He finds himself lying on the forest floor. He seems to be in some sort of cavern...

Mark and Monica both find themselves back at the gnarled tree. Monica spots Peter’s abandoned bike.

Peter approaches a small, round, wood-carved table, set with an elaborately detailed model of forest, at whose centre is a lake, and above which stands a round dial. Across the miniature forest floor are numerous small discs, like board game pieces.

From behind him sounds a brightly welcoming voice.

-->'''Nathaniel:''' Hi, there! Glad you could make it. My name’s Nathaniel.\

He wears a starched, buttoned shirt and braces.

-->'''Peter:''' Where am I… Is this a dream?

-->'''Nathaniel:''' No! It’s a game… You wanna play?

Peter tries to rationalise the situation. Nathaniel humours him, and gestures to the tree stump, in whose miniature lake suddenly appears an overhead view of Mark and Monica.

Peter airily agrees to play. Delighted, Nathaniel spins the dial, takes a piece, and moves it. The disc on which it lands glows white.

-->'''Nathaniel:''' Potpourri!\

He beckons Peter to examine the miniature lake. It shows Mark and Monica who are suddenly astounded by a sudden rain of small, soft, multicoloured objects - flower petals.

Peter enjoys the display. Nathaniel has a turn. He suddenly looks troubled.

-->'''Nathaniel:''' Every time we spin, the last event stops - except one.\

His piece lands on a counter marked with a theatrical frowning mask.

-->'''Nathaniel:''' Burden Beast. Once he’s called up, he never goes away.

-->'''Peter:''' So…? It’s just a game, right?

Beneath a suddenly clear sky, Mark and Monica emerge into the open. Suddenly, inches from Mark’s head, what appears to be a three inch disembodied fang whizzes through the air and plunges into a nearby tree.

From nearby comes a feral snarl. Ahead of them looms a hair-covered figure with a leathery pink face, primeval brow, bat-like nose, vicious fangs and monstrous claws. It hurls another missile, and gives chase. Mark and Monica run.

Peter sternly announces the joke to be up. From the board, he tries to remove his piece - but it’s stuck.

-->'''Nathaniel:''' You can’t quit, you have to finish the game! The winner gets to leave, and the loser has to stay here - forever.\

As Mark and Monica flee the Beast, Monica has the idea of leaving her bag on the path. They off the trail into the woods....

Peter demands an explanation. Nathaniel stumbled, like Peter before him, into this place, was tricked into playing the game, and has been stuck here ever since. Whoever wins the game, Mark and Monica will go free - if they survive. But if no one plays, they’ll all be stuck.

Peter spins the dial. His piece lands on…

-->'''Nathaniel:''' Sticky Pit.
-->'''Peter:''' That’s a good thing, right?
-->'''Nathaniel:''' Well… no.

As Mark and Monica proceed on foot, Mark suddenly and quickly sinks chest-deep into the ground beneath him. Monica grabs a branch, and proffers it…

Peter yells at Nathaniel to make a move. Nathaniel stubbornly plots his course.

-->'''Peter:''' Do it! Now!

Nathaniel relents, and spins.

As Mark pulls at the branch, he finds himself hurled back onto the once more solid forest floor.

Peter and Nathaniel continue to play…

Mark and Monica find themselves back at the gnarled tree. With a snarl, Burden Beast bounds into view…

Nathaniel takes a turn - and lands on Instant Night…

As Mark and Monica run, they find themselves instantaneously find all around them plunged into night. Soon enough, they’re back at the gnarled tree.

Peter takes a turn, and has the option of moving back fifteen spaces, Switch: whereby someone in the forest switches places with him - either his sister or his friend.

He moves back fifteen spaces.

Mark and Monica examine the tree. In frustration, Monica kicks it. Since it looks dead, Mark suggests they try to knock it over…

Around Peter and Nathaniel, the cavern shakes. Peter realises his sister to have suspected the properties of the tree. He spins the dial, and lands on eight.

Above the tree, a clap of thunder accompanies a fork of lightning…

Nathaniel lands his piece on Broken Stick - the lightning won’t stop until Peter spins. But he’s in no hurry…

Burden Beast bounds into the clearing.

A bolt of lightning hits the tree.

In the cavern, the lightning flares onto the table. The game explodes.

In a heavy cloud of smoke, Peter and Monica find themselves on the forest floor - in daylight. Ahead of them is Peter. Overcome with relief, they reunite.

From behind Peter calls the voice of an elderly man. Nathaniel, taller, grey-haired and bearded,

-->'''Nathaniel:''' I guess… I grew old after all these years. But that’s alright… I’m free!\

He now plans to return to the old neighbourhood, from which, back in 1929, he ran away.

Peter, closes Tucker, earned a respect for his younger sibling’s survival skills - and they all beat the game together. The others fondly receive the story, and agree to continue these meetings. As they head off home, Tucker takes a look around the clearing, and grins.

*BookEnds: Comparably with the [[Recap/AreYouAfraidOfTheDarkSeason1TheTaleOfThePhantomCab first episode]] of the original series, the revived series opens with young travellers who get lost in the woods, are threatened with imprisonment therein with another lost soul, and who, through quick thinking, free both him and themselves.
*EarnYourHappyEnding: After seventy years of imprisonment in the woodland cavern, Nathaniel, to win his freedom, plays the Forever Game with Peter. On landing on a disc which summons a lightning storm, Peter deliberately delays his next move, enabling the destruction of the ancient tree which imprisons them all.
*EldritchLocation: Deep in the woods, a trail [[GeniusLoci repeatedly lures]] travellers in an indefinite circle, until a player of the Forever Game can free them.
*HiddenDepths: Monica has an impressive grasp of botany and outdoor survival.
*JerkToNiceGuyPlot: Peter is brusquely disdainful of his younger sister’s lesser speed - but learns to appreciate her survival skills.
*SceneryPorn: The autumnal forest is very easy on the eye.
*ShoutOut: The presence of a game which traps participants in a forested setting and subjects them to outlandish natural threat recalls the premise of [[Franchise/{{Jumanji}}]].
