Some see it as a good thing, in that media no longer gathers a blind, rabid fanbase quite so quickly. However, others have claimed that the userbase has become too obsessed with pointing out flaws to enjoy a work anymore.
* AllCrimesAreEqual: While the rise of callout culture put an end to pedestal-pushing and far-reaching blogger influence, it also came with the tendency for bloggers to crucify others with whatever scraps of dirt were on hand. While it's often exaggerated in complaints, callouts can range from legitimate complaints about a user to reasons a person the OP had a falling out with should be ostracized.

** Inverted. The more key-smashing is used, the happier and more carefree a blogger is. It's when they start talking in complete sentences and speaking coherently that you know someone is pissed off.
** Parodied with "crytyping", which is meant to mock people or characters that need an asskicking but want to act like victims.
* AnimalReactionShot: Highly popular here.

* ArchEnemy: With Facebook and Twitter. Notably, this is one thing that didn't change post-2014. Tumblr users at one time held the site to be the greatest thing ever. Many of them now regard it as garbage. But all of these people will agree that moving to Twitter or Facebook, even to escape the porn ban or functionality decline, is something to be strongly hesitated over.
* ArtImitatesArt: The speed at which memes spread through the site tends to create permutation after permutation, often crossing them with other memes for the sake of humor or using an otherwise context-less image as a response because the humor is in everyone knowing what it means anyway.
* AscendedGlitch: Self-reblogging and tag blacklisting, which were available with various extensions, eventually became part of the site proper. The latter only on mobile, though.
* CloudCuckooLand: 2007–2013 Tumblr in a nutshell. And arguably still today.
* CostumePorn: Tumblr was the best place for artists to get their work noticed, and this was never more true for any than for cosplay artists.
* {{Crossover}}: The experience cultivated by Tumblr allows for a lot of fandoms to be enjoyed simultaneously, though bloggers today discourage this sort of thing going to extremes, as was the case of "Super-Who-Lock" and other such phenomena.
* DeadpanSnarker: The turn the site's humor has taken lately, often capitalizing on an error or fumble made in a previous post or in response to a picture.
* DesignStudentsOrgasm: Take your pick! Be it art, photosets, or even theme construction, the users of Tumblr have talent pouring out of their eardrums.
* TheFashionista: With thousands of code-capable bloggers, independent themes abound, enabling you to make your blog look like just about anything. And with the right Xkit extensions, this extends to your dashboard too!
* ForcedMeme: Due to the incredible speed that posts can spread, a meme can be created, become forced and die in a matter of days while still getting thousands of views.
* IncompetenceInc: Nobody respects the Tumblr team or their decisions. The latest move was absolutely baffling; you can now create and enter group chats...which are ''publicly visible''.
* InsistentTerminology: "Female-presenting nipples" quickly became mocked by every user who read the terms of the adult content ban.
* LargeHam: Innumerable examples, but one that probably sticks out the most is '''Warriormale''', a blog devoted to celebrating masculinity with all of its posts captioned with highly dramatic expressions of life-coaching advice to become more of a man.
* MoodWhiplash: The effects of full freedom to customize your feed to your interests means you won't be the only one who scrolled from pictures of cute kittens to hardcore porn and then right back to kittens.
* {{Nerdgasm}}: Some bloggers get very excited about their favorite shows. A trailer alone can cause massive squee attacks.
* NoPunctuationIsFunnier: Essentially where this sort of thing bred itself into existence, along with Twitter. Language studies have actually been done on the steady phasing out of punctuation in open blogging.
* {{NSFW}}: It's actually called "lemon" again, if you're serious about posting it.
* {{Otaku}}: A large portion of Tumblr could be considered as such, to the rest of the site's annoyance. "Read another book" is a common response for encounters with Harry Potter variants, and "Watch other movies" is the one used for MCU fans.
* OutOfTheFryingPan: The dilemma faced by those who participated in the mass exodus grudgingly or wanted to but didn't. Yes, Tumblr is near un-usable without serious help from extensions and its staff goes out of its way to piss off its users, but leaving for *shudder* ''Twitter''?
* PoesLaw: Due to the danger of this trope, a common joke is to post something completely insane but just realistic enough that it sounds like someone could truly say it and mean it, and then break off halfway through saying "can you imagine".
* PoliticalCorrectnessGoneMad: At its worst, this was very popular on Tumblr. Post-energy burst, some would say it's still popular on Tumblr, but takes on more insidious forms. Pushbacks occasionally happen.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: A common Parody method of having fun by way of DisproportionateRetribution, a la the copypasta "300 confirmed kills" days of old.
* RunningGag: MemeticMutation lends itself easily to this treatment with how fast memes spread. A common and timeless one is based around the TrollFic My Immortal.
* {{Satire}} / {{Parody}} / {{Pastiche}}: And any form of humor not covered by the above two tropes is usually found in this one.
* SceneryPorn: There are quite a few blogs dedicated to pretty pictures of scenery. Sometimes with a theme, such as skyscrapers, scary-looking places, or abandoned buildings. Sometimes not. For a while, a common example was the infamous "Do You Love the Color of the Sky" posts, which spawned first large amounts of vitriol as users complained that it was a nightmare to scroll past, and then spawned infinite parodies.
* SoapBoxSadie: The "go outside" treatment is often given to individuals who delve too far into their own ideas of social justice even today.
* SpiritualSuccessor:
** Tumblr itself is this to {{Website/MySpace}}, in all of the right ''and'' wrong ways, to GenerationXerox levels.
** [=DashCon=] has had its own spiritual successors in subsequent disasters of community organizing, to the point where Fyre Fest and Tanacon are linked in the "See Also" section of the page on Wikipedia.
** After "the Xkit guy" came under an false accusation of harassment and mob mentality kicked in, he deleted and has not returned. "New Xkit" came in to pick up where he left off.
** Nowadays, Tumblr is looking for its own spiritual successor. Most of the userbase who feel the site isn't fun anymore reluctantly admit that, broken to pieces though it may be, its construction and format made it one of the most popular places to blog ''for a reason''. Many who have moved to other sites post-porn bad or post-Automattic acquisition have admitted that it feels like a downgrade. Although no site has truly reached this trope yet, several are trying.
* SuddenlyShouting: When excited, some users tend to start screAMING IN THE MIDDLE OF A SENTENCE. Will also be seen as a form of {{Angrish}}.
* {{Troll}}: On Tumblr, if you like something, you post about it in that something's tag. If you dislike something, you post it into the same tag but with ''anti'' in front of it, so fans don't have to see it. This attitude, while commonly accepted, doesn't stop fans from trying to "dunk" on critical fans or haters by going into their anti-tags and laughing at how dumb they are to dare hate something.
* UrbanLegend: Many things from days gone by make it into Tumblr lore among those who are veterans of the site. Sometimes this is in the form of users who were particularly prolific or problematic, such as pizza or sixpenceee, and other times it's in the form of events, such as the infamous Mishapocalypse.
* WeAllLiveInAmerica:
** A frequent deconstruction of a pervading social justice post is that it's centered on a viewpoint that could only originate in America or an otherwise privileged first-world country in the west.
** Many users have grown tired of "things Americans do" posts by British bloggers who are convinced something completely normal in numerous parts of the world is something alien because it isn't called the same thing.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: Users can be this, specifically the ones who run very classy unassuming SFW blogs. While likes don't appear on your blog (as opposed to re-blogging), the person who blogged that thing you just liked ''can'' see what you just liked. It can be kinda jarring seeing a born-again Christian female like a gorn post or a DP/facial/lesbian/gangbang/bukakke gif set, sleazy story or whatever you just posted.
* YouAreNotAlone: The most positive part of Tumblr is the userbase's unfailing attitude towards helping those in need. Recent times have made this more prominent, but even outside the realm of [=GoFundMe=] posts and organized relief, it's still very easy to find someone to talk to your problems about on Tumblr.
* YouKeepUsingThatWord: You can find any word on Tumblr and see it used in any context, even in contexts not appropriate for it's meaning or phrase, so don't be surprised if you end up thinking this, a lot.

On May 20, 2013, Tumblr was purchased by Website/{{Yahoo}} for $1.1 billion. This led to a veritable panic from the userbase for two reasons. One, Yahoo was (at the time, jokingly) threatening to make the site child-proof and thus devoid of all sexual content. Two, Yahoo had a documented history of acquiring, killing, and then selling sites. As neither of these ([[TimeDelayedDeath immediately]]) came to pass, people forgot their worries. Later that same year, a convention known as "[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DashCon DashCon]]" was announced and, by June 2014, had garnered incredible excitement and anticipation. The con was nothing short of a disaster (full details are on our {{TroubledProduction.Other}} page), and the aftermath caused the site's [[NothingIsTheSameAnymore entire culture to change]].

Tumblr is a "short-form" multimedia blogging platform. A favored stomping ground of college-age (and [[EmoTeen younger]]) amateur photographers, graphic artists, fandom bloggers, social justice bloggers, and people who just felt like making one. It's far less text-rich than other blogging sites. Users tend to collate pretty images and {{meme}}s from around the internet on their tumblogs, with most memes also being popular on [[{{Imageboards}} 4chan]] and Reddit at the same time. They can also follow one another and reblog or like one another's posts, a system that encourages popularity contests. Themed tumblogs abound, from [[http://fuckyeahdioramas.tumblr.com/ Fuck Yeah, Dioramas!]] to [[http://the-right-writing.tumblr.com/ The Right Writing]] to [[http://lesbianswholooklikejustinbieber.tumblr.com/ Lesbians Who Look Like Justin Bieber]]. We also [[http://tvtropesorg.tumblr.com have a tumblr]].

Differing from other mainstream social media sites, rather than personal profiles for networking, its populace is made up largely of a variety of fandoms and artists, while having been noteworthy for every variety of hatedom imaginable and acquiring a reputation among {{Hipster}} bloggers in its earlier years. It's also known for its tacit encouragement of designers. Tumblr's interface makes it easy to set up a portfolio, and its support staff has been praised for running its Theme Garden, which features often minimalist layouts designed by users.

Their fandom base is very widespread, ranging from ''Literature/HarryPotter'' to ''Podcast/WelcomeToNightVale''. Any movie or show with a large slash following have fairly large fanbases. Like most places on the internet, {{Shipping}} is also a big deal.

On May 20, 2013, Tumblr was purchased by ''Website/{{Yahoo}}'' for $1 billion.

In 2017, Verizon bought out Yahoo and placed ownership of Tumblr under their "The Oath" branding. On December 3rd 2018, after the Tumblr app was removed from the iOS store for allegedly allowing users to access child pornography, The Oath announced that all adult content was to be banned. The ban was enacted on December 17th 2018.

* AccentuateTheNegative: Tumblr users seem to enjoy doing this to their favourite works of fiction; it's not uncommon either for someone to make a lengthy post deconstructing something in order to demonstrate why it's actually the most depressing, horrifying and/or darkest thing you'll ever experience, no matter how cheerful or uplifting it appears to be on the surface, or essentially hijacking someone else's post of a typically cheerful, uplifting moment to point why it's actually sad and they should feel sad. If Tumblr users [[MemeticMutation are to be believed]], then [[Series/{{Supernatural}} Dean Winchester]] cannot crack a harmless joke without it being a soul-destroying reflection of his myriad psychological issues, [[Series/{{Sherlock}} John Watson]] [[ShipTease cannot even glance at Sherlock]] without experiencing a crippling attack of {{Gayngst}} and [[Series/DoctorWho the Doctor]] can't do anything at all without it being the most depressing and heartbreaking thing ever.

** Most of the famous people that Tumblr users fangirl over are best described as this. Just look at Creator/MartinFreeman, Creator/TomHiddleston, and Creator/BenedictCumberbatch.
** Most of the users themselves fall into this category. The sheer number of posts about social awkwardness, shyness and the excitement they display over fandom developments is staggering.
* AllIssuesArePoliticalIssues: You can find long tracts analyzing pretty much anything, even a character's hair length, articles of clothing worn, or the arrangement of the colors used in a particular logo, in terms of their political undertones. Particularly notable examples can be seen in the social justice sphere, where many things not normally seen as political can be used to incriminate a series on the basis of having offensive implications.
* {{Angrish}}: The use of strings of keyboard-mashing gibberish such as "djhjrnfhbhnjh" is common to denote strong emotions, especially excitement and rage.
** Look out for "asdfjkl". That's a popular one.
* AnimalReactionShot: Extremely popular here.
* AnthropomorphicPersonification: The "[[http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mclulejCVW1r6hcp5o1_400.png Knight of Blogging]]".
** A popular fandom-crossover is [[{{WebOriginal/Fandomstuck}} Fandomstuck]] which anthromorphicizes various fandoms.
** There's even anthropomorphisizing of of [[http://antemrd.tumblr.com/post/18546286605 tumblr]] [[http://ask-nightcreed.tumblr.com/post/43833176263/theladystache-yeah-here-you-go-tumblr-edit itself]].
* AntiPoopSocking:
** You can only make 250 posts per day. This isn't a problem at all if you simply use Tumblr like a more traditional blogging platform, but if you reblog things a lot this can easily create problems.
** You can only send 5 "ask" messages per hour.
* ArchEnemy: With Website/{{Facebook}}. Alternatively, [[ImageBoards 4chan]] considers Tumblr this. Especially /co/ due to [[YaoiFangirl yaoi fangirls]] and rampant shippers which they feel bring in the more annoying (to them) aspects of fandom and make discussing things besides {{Shipping}} a chore if not impossible. The vitriol got even worse once ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra'' premiered and Tumblr practically exploded in Korra love, fanart and [[ShipToShipCombat shipping wars]].
** Website/SomethingAwful has a distaste for the site, though it's mostly due to the nerdity[[note]]Something Awful has an unbridled, unironic hatred of nerds.[[/note]], "hugboxing"[[note]]An echo chamber of positivity that deflects any legitimate criticism[[/note]], and social justice warriors.
** Within Tumblr, 'Fandoms' (people who blog mainly about their favourite TV shows, movies, etc) and 'Hipsters' (people who use the site mainly for introspection, inspiring images, etc) appear to be locked in a deadly rivalry, which primarily takes the form of fandoms 'hijacking' hipster posts that they feel are excessively pretentious with fandom references, and hipsters... complaining about the fandoms doing this, mainly.
** Even the fandoms themselves can get into wars, like the rivalry between Superwholock and Homestuck. This extends into people who ''hate'' fandoms (and nerd stuff in general) who have a particular BerserkButton for a certain fandom, never passing up the chance to shower fandom members in venom. Hetalia and Homestuck are popular targets.
** Hardcore Vegans/Vegetarians vs meat eaters.
* ArtImitatesArt: A lot of users post iconic paintings, especially if they're Pre-Raphaelite or Neoclassical. Some of them tend to be memish remixes and post-modernist modifications. A few Tumblrs are for actual art galleries and artists who've had their stuff toured.
* AscendedGlitch: An exploit allowed you to reblog yourself, particularly with extensions such as Missing e. Tumblr has since made self-reblogging an official feature.
* AscendedMeme: Flower crowns. They became so popular on tumblr that at 2013 ComicCon cast and production staff, ''Series/TeenWolf'' and Series/{{Hannibal}} in particular, ''have started wearing real ones''.
* BerserkButton:
** For most users, "[[BlatantLies We'll Be Back Shortly]]", and for others, the error page.
** Do not make rape jokes; it will only end badly!
** It is perfectly OK to blow off some steam and post about how much you vehemently hate something, but ''don't tag it''. The ''fans'' of that thing who track the tag will see it and you will be ripped many new ones.
** Changes are never welcomed. ''Even if it's just a new button''.
** [[GrammarNazi Know the difference between 'you're' and 'your'!]]
** Posting artwork without crediting the original artist ("sourcing"), and by extension, "editing" artwork (ie, "tweaking" them with graphics). Especially seen as a problem in fandoms of anime and Japanese games, where ignorant (or lazy) users often upload Japanese fanart without mentioning the artist, providing a link to their site, or putting links to the wrong source.
** Two words: '''[[PunctuatedForEmphasis POST. LIMIT.]]'''
** The paid advertisements on Tumblr radar has, once again, inflamed the hearts of many.

** Cultural reappropriation, for a lot of [=SJWs=]. This includes wearing dreadlocks or bindis by white people. While the former have been worn by peoples from India all the way to Africa (and, by extention, the Caribbeans) and bindis are now worn throughout the entire Indian subcontinent regardless of age, sex, or creed, [=SJWs=] often point out that people from the cultures dreadlocks and bindis originated in face far harsher consequences (being deemed ‘unprofessional’ or prone to racist remarks) [[DoubleStandard compared to white people doing it]].
* CharacterBlog: The roleplaying community; to be more specific, there are ask blogs (either drawn, text, or cosplay) and rpers, which are split into independent rpers and members of a specific roleplay group. Probably older than most visitors think, but the majority of roleplayers are characters from newer series.
* CloudCuckooLand: Good lord, is it ever.
* CloudCuckooLander: "Night bloggers", who blog in the middle of the night while extremely tired and are responsible for the most bizarre text posts imaginable. And when we say bizarre, [[http://flomation.tumblr.com/tagged/the-nightblogging-series we mean it.]]
** Also, fans who are suffering from waiting for new canon material often post very strange stuff.

* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Parodied. Sometimes there's posts depicting a gruesome fictional scene. People will express their dismay... at all of the minor, non-offensive things in the picture.
** This is particularly popular with a series of violent Barbie photos. Ex: Severed limbs will be strewn around the kitchen while Barbie is holding a knife and someone will comment on the horror- that she is doing dishes in high heels instead of more comfortable shoes.
* CoolCar: Lots of car porn.
* CostumePorn: Cosplay blogs and fashion blogs. Lots of NSFW photographs involving costumed individuals, as well!

** Sometimes a video is posted but sometimes, alternatively, scenes are made into sets of gifs for quick viewing pleasures.
** Most users will post/reblog photos of celebrities they find attractive, sometimes accompanied by indelicate comments or tags about them.
** Some users even have a sub-blog as their personal porn stash.
** This love for erotic materials is most notable when Yahoo bought Tumblr and people were terrified of rumors that Yahoo was going to get rid of all of the porn. It even prompted the higher-ups at Yahoo to issue a statement assuring people that they weren't going to get rid of the porn.

** SnarkToSnarkCombat: Which often results in this.
* DesignStudentsOrgasm: Averted with the themes, which are usually very minimalist, but played straight with many of the art posts.
* DoesNotLikeMen: Several of the [[StrawFeminist hardcore feminist/queer]] users, (fortunately, they are simply a VocalMinority) but usually PrettyBoy celebrities are the exception, as a general rule.

* FalseFriend: Apparently, [[http://coletureconceptarchive.tumblr.com/post/35941277163/so-my-goal-for-this-website-was-accomplished-i Cole Sprouse.]] We were a sociology experiment. People took things a bit too far, though (ranging from immature edits of wiki pages to ''death threats'').
* FanGirl: A majority of female fandom bloggers on the site.
** A bunch of fansites following the convention fuckyeah__. Common alternatives are "hellyeah", "heckyeah", or "fyeah", if the person in charge doesn't want to swear in the blog title. Then there's "feckyeahfatherted" "frackyeahbattlestargalactica" "darvityeahartemisfowl" "fokja[[Music/DieAntwoord yolandi]]" and "fookyeahdistrict9".

* SoapBoxSadie: While not as big a presence as amateur photographers, it's very hard not to run into social justice activists on Tumblr. This is a consequence of many LiveJournal users - also known for their activism - migrating to Tumblr.

* ThereAreNoGirlsOnTheInternet: Averted with this site, where a large majority of the site's fandom-based Tumblrs are run by females (read: yaoi fangirls). Most of the straight porn blogs are actually run by women.
** This can even be seen as an inversion, in fact--it's (usually) not entirely shocking if you have a hard time finding any men running blogs on Tumblr.
** It's come to the point where many just assume all users they come across are female unless explicitly stated otherwise. Which can get a little disconcerting for those of us who are guys on there.
** This, combined with the fangirling over celebrities and huge amount of porn, was rather brilliantly summed up by the statement "Tumblr is like this weird alternate universe where 15 year old girls obsessively stalk 40 year old men in vans".
** There's actually a fandom for the "men of tumblr", mainly for doing silly/creative things, or subverting gender roles.
** Oddly, [[http://www.quora.com/What-is-the-demographic-breakdown-of-Tumblr this]] data has recorded 2% more males on tumblr than females.

* UrbanLegend: It is trivially easy to attribute a post to the staff blog, or CNN, or any number of reputable sources that never said a word about it. Apparently this is all it takes to convince large numbers of users it's legit. This can be anywhere from psuedorealistic articles, tabloid-style gossip, or passing off gifs and pictures from fictional media (or even something hilarious) as something deep/meaningful/edgy/real.

* StealthParody: Many {{trolls}} pretend to be extreme [=SJWs=]. They often use as many labels as possible, often including mutually exclusive ones and absurd ones (‘plantkin’), and exaggerate points of contention to illogical extremes. They manage to fool a lot of people, mostly non-[=SJWs=], who use them as examples to bash the SJW community.
