* AccentuateTheNegative: Following the energy burst from Dashcon, this has become a lot more popular. Some see it as a good thing, in that media no longer gathers a blind, rabid fanbase quite so quickly. However, others have claimed that the userbase has become too obsessed with pointing out flaws to enjoy a work anymore.
* AllCrimesAreEqual: While the rise of callout culture put an end to pedestal-pushing and far-reaching blogger influence, it also came with the tendency for bloggers to crucify others with whatever scraps of dirt were on hand. While it's often exaggerated in complaints, callouts can range from legitimate complaints about a user to reasons a person the OP had a falling out with should be ostracized.

* {{Angrish}}:
** Inverted. The more key-smashing is used, the happier and more carefree a blogger is. It's when they start talking in complete sentences and speaking coherently that you know someone is pissed off.
** Parodied with "crytyping", which is meant to mock people or characters that need an asskicking but want to act like victims.
* AnimalReactionShot: Highly popular here.

* ArchEnemy: With Facebook and Twitter. Notably, this is one thing that didn't change post-2014. Tumblr users at one time held the site to be the greatest thing ever. Many of them now regard it as garbage. But all of these people will agree that moving to Twitter or Facebook, even to escape the porn ban or functionality decline, is something to be strongly hesitated over.
* ArtImitatesArt: The speed at which memes spread through the site tends to create permutation after permutation, often crossing them with other memes for the sake of humor or using an otherwise context-less image as a response because the humor is in everyone knowing what it means anyway.
* AscendedGlitch: Self-reblogging and tag blacklisting, which were available with various extensions, eventually became part of the site proper. The latter only on mobile, though.
* CloudCuckooLand: 2007–2013 Tumblr in a nutshell. And arguably still today.

* {{Crossover}}: The experience cultivated by Tumblr allows for a lot of fandoms to be enjoyed simultaneously, though bloggers today discourage this sort of thing going to extremes, as was the case of "Super-Who-Lock" and other such phenomena.
* DeadpanSnarker: The turn the site's humor has taken lately, often capitalizing on an error or fumble made in a previous post or in response to a picture.
* DesignStudentsOrgasm: Take your pick! Be it art, photosets, or even theme construction, the users of Tumblr have talent pouring out of their eardrums.
* TheFashionista: With thousands of code-capable bloggers, independent themes abound, enabling you to make your blog look like just about anything. And with the right Xkit extensions, this extends to your dashboard too!
* ForcedMeme: Due to the incredible speed that posts can spread, a meme can be created, become forced and die in a matter of days while still getting thousands of views.
* IncompetenceInc: Nobody respects the Tumblr team or their decisions. The latest move was absolutely baffling; you can now create and enter group chats...which are ''publicly visible''.
* InsistentTerminology: "Female-presenting nipples" quickly became mocked by every user who read the terms of the adult content ban.
* LargeHam: Innumerable examples, but one that probably sticks out the most is '''Warriormale''', a blog devoted to celebrating masculinity with all of its posts captioned with highly dramatic expressions of life-coaching advice to become more of a man.
* MoodWhiplash: The effects of full freedom to customize your feed to your interests means you won't be the only one who scrolled from pictures of cute kittens to hardcore porn and then right back to kittens.
* {{Nerdgasm}}: Some bloggers get very excited about their favorite shows. A trailer alone can cause massive squee attacks.
* NoPunctuationIsFunnier: Essentially where this sort of thing bred itself into existence, along with Twitter. Language studies have actually been done on the steady phasing out of punctuation in open blogging.
* {{NSFW}}: It's actually called "lemon" again, if you're serious about posting it.
* {{Otaku}}: A large portion of Tumblr could be considered as such, to the rest of the site's annoyance. "Read another book" is a common response for encounters with Harry Potter variants, and "Watch other movies" is the one used for MCU fans.
* OutOfTheFryingPan: The dilemma faced by those who participated in the mass exodus grudgingly or wanted to but didn't. Yes, Tumblr is near un-usable without serious help from extensions and its staff goes out of its way to piss off its users, but leaving for *shudder* ''Twitter''?
* PoesLaw: Due to the danger of this trope, a common joke is to post something completely insane but just realistic enough that it sounds like someone could truly say it and mean it, and then break off halfway through saying "can you imagine".
* PoliticalCorrectnessGoneMad: At its worst, this was very popular on Tumblr. Post-energy burst, some would say it's still popular on Tumblr, but takes on more insidious forms. Pushbacks occasionally happen.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: A common Parody method of having fun by way of DisproportionateRetribution, a la the copypasta "300 confirmed kills" days of old.
* RunningGag: MemeticMutation lends itself easily to this treatment with how fast memes spread. A common and timeless one is based around the TrollFic My Immortal.
* {{Satire}} / {{Parody}} / {{Pastiche}}: And any form of humor not covered by the above two tropes is usually found in this one.

For a while, a common example was the infamous "Do You Love the Color of the Sky" posts, which spawned first large amounts of vitriol as users complained that it was a nightmare to scroll past, and then spawned infinite parodies.

** Nowadays, Tumblr is looking for its own spiritual successor. Most of the userbase who feel the site isn't fun anymore reluctantly admit that, broken to pieces though it may be, its construction and format made it one of the most popular places to blog ''for a reason''. Many who have moved to other sites post-porn bad or post-Automattic acquisition have admitted that it feels like a downgrade. Although no site has truly reached this trope yet, several are trying.
* SuddenlyShouting: When excited, some users tend to start screAMING IN THE MIDDLE OF A SENTENCE. Will also be seen as a form of {{Angrish}}.
* {{Troll}}: On Tumblr, if you like something, you post about it in that something's tag. If you dislike something, you post it into the same tag but with ''anti'' in front of it, so fans don't have to see it. This attitude, while commonly accepted, doesn't stop fans from trying to "dunk" on critical fans or haters by going into their anti-tags and laughing at how dumb they are to dare hate something.
* UrbanLegend: Many things from days gone by make it into Tumblr lore among those who are veterans of the site. Sometimes this is in the form of users who were particularly prolific or problematic, such as pizza or sixpenceee, and other times it's in the form of events, such as the infamous Mishapocalypse.

* YouKeepUsingThatWord: You can find any word on Tumblr and see it used in any context, even in contexts not appropriate for it's meaning or phrase, so don't be surprised if you end up thinking this, a lot.

** In 2014 they encouraged users to upgrade to "Tumblr Pro", not explaining what was so special about it. Those who clicked it received nothing more than a fedora placed on their avatar for the rest of the day.
** For 2015 they debuted an "Executive Suite 2015", complete with spreadsheets, a notepad, and a calculator (which didn't work). Also, if you tried the "free trial", your blog got a business-esque addendum to its name, and your dashboard was overrun by a "helpful" Clippy-esque icon: A copy machine named Coppy which you couldn't get rid of (clicking its X caused it to go away for about 3 seconds before it popped up again). Coppy subsequently became a hit among users.
** In 2016, the site piggybacked on the hype regarding the presidential elections by unleashing "Decision 2016", in which users were asked to vote for one of four lizards. Voting would cause an "I Voted" sticker to appear above your profile picture for the remainder of the day.
** In 2017, the site introduced a simple Tamagotchi-like virtual pet where bloggers had to clean up after a pixel-art horse with a randomly-generated (and often quite silly) name.
** In 2018, they introduced "Tumblcoin", a cryptocurrency acquired by liking and reblogging posts that could be exchanged for additions onto the dashboard, such as [[ContinuityNod the aforementioned virtual horse pet,]] a frame around the avatar, an AIM skin for the messenger, and the "missing E" in the logo.
** In 2019, they created a blog bot called Tumblr Memories, which would personalize posts for the viewer by inputting tags and usernames frequently used on their blog into premade posts, Mad Libs style. This backfired, however, for users who frequently used trigger warnings, as a lack of forbidden words in the code led to custom posts that said things like "Pour one out for #abuse."
** In 2021, they introduced a button that said "Summon the Tumblrcryptid," which parodied the cryptocurrency [=NFTs=]. You could post this to your blog with the tag [=#NFTumblcryptids.=]

Tumblr is a "short-form" multimedia blogging platform. A favored stomping ground of college-age (and [[EmoTeen younger]]) amateur photographers, graphic artists, fandom bloggers, social justice bloggers, and people who just felt like making one. It's far less text-rich than other blogging sites. Users tend to collate pretty images and {{meme}}s from around the internet on their tumblogs, with most memes also being popular on [[{{Imageboards}} 4chan]] and Reddit at the same time. They can also follow one another and reblog or like one another's posts, a system that encourages popularity contests. Themed tumblogs abound, from [[http://fuckyeahdioramas.tumblr.com/ Fuck Yeah, Dioramas!]] to [[http://the-right-writing.tumblr.com/ The Right Writing]] to [[http://lesbianswholooklikejustinbieber.tumblr.com/ Lesbians Who Look Like Justin Bieber]]. Tumblr's interface makes it easy to set up a portfolio, and its support staff has been praised for running its Theme Garden, which features often minimalist layouts designed by users.

Their fandom base is very widespread, ranging from ''Literature/HarryPotter'' to ''Podcast/WelcomeToNightVale''. Any movie or show with a large slash following have fairly large fanbases. Like most places on the internet, {{Shipping}} is also a big deal.

Tumblr is a "short-form" multimedia blogging platform. A favored stomping ground It was a project initiated by then-high schooler David Karp, who eventually fulfilled his goal in 2007.

It steadily grew from modest beginnings to becoming ''the'' place to blog, allowing users to connect with one another over interests and discouraging the sort
of college-age real-life friends and family environment (and [[EmoTeen younger]]) amateur photographers, graphic artists, fandom bloggers, thus feuds, embarrassments, and hiding of interests) of {{Website/Facebook}}, while also boasting much more posting utility than sites such as {{Website/LiveJournal}} or {{Website/Twitter}}. The many differing post types and the flexibility of blog creation and theme production led Tumblr to become the fastest place a user could begin exploring their own interests and setting up their own little home. [[LGBTFanbase LGBT activism]] took full steam, as did the social justice bloggers, and people who just felt like making one. It's far less text-rich than other blogging sites. Users tend movement, the latter of which led to collate pretty images and {{meme}}s mockery from around a lot of the internet on their tumblogs, with most memes also being popular on [[{{Imageboards}} 4chan]] and Reddit at for the same time. We also [[http://tvtropesorg.tumblr.com have a tumblr]].

Differing from other mainstream social media sites, rather than personal profiles for networking, its populace is made up largely
perceived "social justice warrior" attitude of a variety of fandoms and artists, while having been noteworthy for every variety of hatedom imaginable and acquiring a reputation among {{Hipster}} bloggers in its earlier years. It's also known for its tacit encouragement of designers. Tumblr's interface makes it easy to set up a portfolio, and its support staff has been praised for running its Theme Garden, which features often minimalist layouts designed by users.

site.

On May 20, 2013, Tumblr was purchased by ''Website/{{Yahoo}}'' Website/{{Yahoo}} for $1 billion.

$1.1 billion. This led to a veritable panic from the userbase for two reasons. One, Yahoo was (at the time, jokingly) threatening to make the site child-proof and thus devoid of all sexual content. Two, Yahoo had a documented history of acquiring, killing, and then selling sites. As neither of these ([[TimeDelayedDeath immediately]]) came to pass, people forgot their worries. Later that same year, a convention known as "[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DashCon DashCon]]" was announced and, by June 2014, had garnered incredible excitement and anticipation. The con was nothing short of a disaster (full details are on our {{TroubledProduction.Other}} page), and the aftermath caused the site's [[NothingIsTheSameAnymore entire culture to change]].

Like a deflating balloon, Tumblr's rapid-fire {{Keet}} personality depleted. Activism contained itself only to those passionate for it, fandoms began more self-examination, badly-behaved but popular bloggers were called out, and the site's humor took on a more snarky and memetic tone. The term "dashcon" became synonymous with a [[IHatePastMe cringier, more immature time]] that haunts those who were on the site long enough to see it happen. Around the same time, site staff started to become the target of outright loathing from users. Numerous changes and updates rolled out despite the heavy resistance from users, and said updates were often accompanied by the site going down for days at a time, earning the staff [[IncompetenceInc a reputation for incompetence]]. This worsened when the staff stopped answering emails, leaving the site's problems (such as child porn, neo-nazism, and virus bots) to fester and grow.

In 2017, Verizon bought out Yahoo and placed ownership of Tumblr under their "The Oath" branding. On December 3rd 3rd, 2018, after the Tumblr app was removed from the iOS store for allegedly allowing users to access child pornography, The Oath announced that all adult content was to on the site would be banned. The Following a large purge of the userbase in which thousands of blogs were deleted, the ban was enacted on December 17th 2018.17th, 2018. Said adult content ban turned out to be TheLastStraw for its userbase. The 6 months following the ban saw a mass exodus of users to more relaxed sites, which caused [[HowTheMightyHaveFallen Tumblr to lose close to a 33% of its once-massive userbase, a percentage that only rose higher as the weeks wore on]]. Finally, on August 12th, 2019, Verizon sold Tumblr to Automattic (the parent company to Wordpress) for less than $3 million.

* AccentuateTheNegative: Tumblr users seem to enjoy doing this to their favourite works of fiction; it's not uncommon either for someone to make a lengthy post deconstructing something in order to demonstrate why it's actually the most depressing, horrifying and/or darkest thing you'll ever experience, no matter how cheerful or uplifting it appears to be on the surface, or essentially hijacking someone else's post of a typically cheerful, uplifting moment to point why it's actually sad and they should feel sad. If Tumblr users [[MemeticMutation are to be believed]], then [[Series/{{Supernatural}} Dean Winchester]] cannot crack a harmless joke without it being a soul-destroying reflection of his myriad psychological issues, [[Series/{{Sherlock}} John Watson]] [[ShipTease cannot even glance at Sherlock]] without experiencing a crippling attack of {{Gayngst}} and [[Series/DoctorWho the Doctor]] can't do anything at all without it being the most depressing and heartbreaking thing ever.
* {{Adorkable}}:
** Most of the famous people that Tumblr users fangirl over are best described as this. Just look at Creator/MartinFreeman, Creator/TomHiddleston, and Creator/BenedictCumberbatch.
** Most of the users themselves fall into this category. The sheer number of posts about social awkwardness, shyness and the excitement they display over fandom developments is staggering.
* AllIssuesArePoliticalIssues: You can find long tracts analyzing pretty much anything, even a character's hair length, articles of clothing worn, or the arrangement of the colors used in a particular logo, in terms of their political undertones. Particularly notable examples can be seen in the social justice sphere, where many things not normally seen as political can be used to incriminate a series on the basis of having offensive implications.
* {{Angrish}}: The use of strings of keyboard-mashing gibberish such as "djhjrnfhbhnjh" is common to denote strong emotions, especially excitement and rage.
** Look out for "asdfjkl". That's a popular one.
* AnimalReactionShot: Extremely popular here.
* AnthropomorphicPersonification: The "[[http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mclulejCVW1r6hcp5o1_400.png Knight of Blogging]]".
** A popular fandom-crossover is [[{{WebOriginal/Fandomstuck}} Fandomstuck]] which anthromorphicizes various fandoms.
** There's even anthropomorphisizing of of [[http://antemrd.tumblr.com/post/18546286605 tumblr]] [[http://ask-nightcreed.tumblr.com/post/43833176263/theladystache-yeah-here-you-go-tumblr-edit itself]].
* AntiPoopSocking:
** You can only make 250 posts per day. This isn't a problem at all if you simply use Tumblr like a more traditional blogging platform, but if you reblog things a lot this can easily create problems.
** You can only send 5 "ask" messages per hour.
* ArchEnemy: With Website/{{Facebook}}. Alternatively, [[ImageBoards 4chan]] considers Tumblr this. Especially /co/ due to [[YaoiFangirl yaoi fangirls]] and rampant shippers which they feel bring in the more annoying (to them) aspects of fandom and make discussing things besides {{Shipping}} a chore if not impossible. The vitriol got even worse once ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra'' premiered and Tumblr practically exploded in Korra love, fanart and [[ShipToShipCombat shipping wars]].
** Website/SomethingAwful has a distaste for the site, though it's mostly due to the nerdity[[note]]Something Awful has an unbridled, unironic hatred of nerds.[[/note]], "hugboxing"[[note]]An echo chamber of positivity that deflects any legitimate criticism[[/note]], and social justice warriors.
** Within Tumblr, 'Fandoms' (people who blog mainly about their favourite TV shows, movies, etc) and 'Hipsters' (people who use the site mainly for introspection, inspiring images, etc) appear to be locked in a deadly rivalry, which primarily takes the form of fandoms 'hijacking' hipster posts that they feel are excessively pretentious with fandom references, and hipsters... complaining about the fandoms doing this, mainly.
** Even the fandoms themselves can get into wars, like the rivalry between Superwholock and Homestuck. This extends into people who ''hate'' fandoms (and nerd stuff in general) who have a particular BerserkButton for a certain fandom, never passing up the chance to shower fandom members in venom. Hetalia and Homestuck are popular targets.
** Hardcore Vegans/Vegetarians vs meat eaters.
* ArtImitatesArt: A lot of users post iconic paintings, especially if they're Pre-Raphaelite or Neoclassical. Some of them tend to be memish remixes and post-modernist modifications. A few Tumblrs are for actual art galleries and artists who've had their stuff toured.
* AscendedGlitch: An exploit allowed you to reblog yourself, particularly with extensions such as Missing e. Tumblr has since made self-reblogging an official feature.
* AscendedMeme: Flower crowns. They became so popular on tumblr that at 2013 ComicCon cast and production staff, ''Series/TeenWolf'' and Series/{{Hannibal}} in particular, ''have started wearing real ones''.
* BerserkButton:
** For most users, "[[BlatantLies We'll Be Back Shortly]]", and for others, the error page.
** Do not make rape jokes; it will only end badly!
** It is perfectly OK to blow off some steam and post about how much you vehemently hate something, but ''don't tag it''. The ''fans'' of that thing who track the tag will see it and you will be ripped many new ones.
** Changes are never welcomed. ''Even if it's just a new button''.
** [[GrammarNazi Know the difference between 'you're' and 'your'!]]
** Posting artwork without crediting the original artist ("sourcing"), and by extension, "editing" artwork (ie, "tweaking" them with graphics). Especially seen as a problem in fandoms of anime and Japanese games, where ignorant (or lazy) users often upload Japanese fanart without mentioning the artist, providing a link to their site, or putting links to the wrong source.
** Two words: '''[[PunctuatedForEmphasis POST. LIMIT.]]'''
** The paid advertisements on Tumblr radar has, once again, inflamed the hearts of many.
** As with all things, this has also been turned into a meme:
---> (◡‿◡✿)
---> (ʘ‿ʘ✿) What you say about x?
---> (ʘ‿ʘ)ノ✿ Hold my flower.
----> ✿\(。-_-。) Kick his ass, baby. I got yo flower.
** Homophobia is very much hated on the site in general, which can be summed up with this quote:
--->"This is tumblr. We like gays more than '''gays like gays'''".
** There are some hate blogs for celebrities in Tumblr, and as with the case of Creator/MirandaCosgrove, will send angry hordes of jerks down the pipe.
** '''Anything''' involving anorexia in a bright(...ish) light(headcanons, pro-ana blogs) is absolutely ''not'' welcome.
** Cultural reappropriation, for a lot of [=SJWs=]. This includes wearing dreadlocks or bindis by white people. While the former have been worn by peoples from India all the way to Africa (and, by extention, the Caribbeans) and bindis are now worn throughout the entire Indian subcontinent regardless of age, sex, or creed, [=SJWs=] often point out that people from the cultures dreadlocks and bindis originated in face far harsher consequences (being deemed ‘unprofessional’ or prone to racist remarks) [[DoubleStandard compared to white people doing it]].
* CharacterBlog: The roleplaying community; to be more specific, there are ask blogs (either drawn, text, or cosplay) and rpers, which are split into independent rpers and members of a specific roleplay group. Probably older than most visitors think, but the majority of roleplayers are characters from newer series.
* CloudCuckooLand: Good lord, is it ever.
* CloudCuckooLander: "Night bloggers", who blog in the middle of the night while extremely tired and are responsible for the most bizarre text posts imaginable. And when we say bizarre, [[http://flomation.tumblr.com/tagged/the-nightblogging-series we mean it.]]
** Also, fans who are suffering from waiting for new canon material often post very strange stuff.
*** ESPECIALLY Homestucks. This happened within about 2 days of the start of the megahiatus.
*** Don't forget the Sherlock fandom.
*** The Supernatural fandom has turned as crazy as the Sherlockians during their hiatus.
*** The Series/{{Hannibal}} fandom was ''made'' of this from the start. Including their official blog.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Parodied. Sometimes there's posts depicting a gruesome fictional scene. People will express their dismay... at all of the minor, non-offensive things in the picture.
** This is particularly popular with a series of violent Barbie photos. Ex: Severed limbs will be strewn around the kitchen while Barbie is holding a knife and someone will comment on the horror- that she is doing dishes in high heels instead of more comfortable shoes.
* CoolCar: Lots of car porn.
* CostumePorn: Cosplay blogs and fashion blogs. Lots of NSFW photographs involving costumed individuals, as well!
* {{Crossover}}: Don't freak out if you ever see a "[[Podcast/WelcomeToNightVale Welcome To ]][[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic My Little ]][[WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra Legend Of ]][[Manga/AttackOnTitan Attack On ]][[Anime/TigerAndBunny Tiger And ]][[Series/{{Supernatural}} Super]][[Webcomic/{{Axis Powers Hetalia}} Heta]][[Series/{{Hannibal}} Hanni]][[Series/DoctorWho Who]][[Film/TheAvengers2012 Avenger]][[Anime/{{Free}} Free]][[VideoGame/{{Off}} Off]][[Series/{{Sherlock}} Lock]][[Literature/HarryPotter Potter]][[Webcomic/{{Homestuck}} stuck]]" post on your dashboard.
* {{Cute Kitten}}s: And cats! There are many pictures of cats uploaded there.
* ADateWithRosiePalms: Given that anything goes on Tumblr, there are [[TheInternetIsForPorn quite a few blogs dedicated to posting pornography]], be it gay, lesbian, straight, hardcore, softcore, fandom, etc.
** Sometimes a video is posted but sometimes, alternatively, scenes are made into sets of gifs for quick viewing pleasures.
** Most users will post/reblog photos of celebrities they find attractive, sometimes accompanied by indelicate comments or tags about them.
** Some users even have a sub-blog as their personal porn stash.
** This love for erotic materials is most notable when Yahoo bought Tumblr and people were terrified of rumors that Yahoo was going to get rid of all of the porn. It even prompted the higher-ups at Yahoo to issue a statement assuring people that they weren't going to get rid of the porn.
* DeadpanSnarker: Quite a few of users on this site.
** SnarkToSnarkCombat: Which often results in this.
* DesignStudentsOrgasm: Averted with the themes, which are usually very minimalist, but played straight with many of the art posts.
* DoesNotLikeMen: Several of the [[StrawFeminist hardcore feminist/queer]] users, (fortunately, they are simply a VocalMinority) but usually PrettyBoy celebrities are the exception, as a general rule.
* {{Eagleland}}: PlayedForLaughs and parodied, usually with stock photo of a bald eagle juxtaposed in front of an American flag. Example:
--> ''Blog Post'': Here in [insert country], it is our [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_Day Freedom Day]] holiday.
--> ''Reply'': In America every day is Freedom Day! *Insert Stock Photo*
* EmoTeen: A good portion of the Tumblr demographic, these (depending exactly where you are on Tumblr) can sometimes be a minority of users. Others users often insult and quite often parody it.
* EverybodyHatesMathematics: A large chunk of Tumblr users seem to hate mathematics, as evidenced by the percentage of posts in the "mathematics" and "math" tags consisting of posts complaining about math homework rather than posts about math itself. It's generally the exception to users complaining about seeing hate in their tracked tags.
* FalseFriend: Apparently, [[http://coletureconceptarchive.tumblr.com/post/35941277163/so-my-goal-for-this-website-was-accomplished-i Cole Sprouse.]] We were a sociology experiment. People took things a bit too far, though (ranging from immature edits of wiki pages to ''death threats'').
* FanGirl: A majority of female fandom bloggers on the site.
** A bunch of fansites following the convention fuckyeah__. Common alternatives are "hellyeah", "heckyeah", or "fyeah", if the person in charge doesn't want to swear in the blog title. Then there's "feckyeahfatherted" "frackyeahbattlestargalactica" "darvityeahartemisfowl" "fokja[[Music/DieAntwoord yolandi]]" and "fookyeahdistrict9".
*** And, of course, "flipyeahrichardayoade"
** YaoiFangirl: There is also a '''large''' yaoi fanbase on the site as well. In fact, the majority of the girls on there can and will ship any gay pairing as hard as they can, the more nonsensical the better. There's something of a running gag on the site that, on Tumblr, [[HetIsEw there is no such thing as heterosexuality]].
* TheFashionista: Due to its large number of users who are both female and enjoy artistic pasttimes, a large portion of the Tumblr community. There are also a number of [[TheDandy male Fashionistas]], and a fair few [[AmbiguousGender fashionable androgynes]].
* FlameWar: Making [[BlackComedyRape rape jokes]] can easily get people riled up and lead to one.
* FoodPorn: Many blogs post richly-colored photos of food [[RuleOfCool for seemingly no reason]]. Some blogs exclusively post pictures of this. People also share recipes, cooking tips and the like, as a lot of food porn posters are "foodies".
* ForeignCultureFetish: A lot of Tumblr users seem to be hardened Anglophiles, although their vision of Britain in many cases is based more on the fact that their favourite TV show and / or the actor on whom they have a crush originates from there rather than an understanding of the country as it actually exists.
* FriendlyWar: On May 2012, Europeans liveblogged about [[Series/EurovisionSongContest Eurovision 2012]]. America declared a Banana War on the Eurovision posts by reblogging bananas.
* GetBackInTheCloset: Averted. For a time, certain tags such as "gay", "lesbian", and "bisexual" were blocked by Yahoo, being perceived as homophobic behavior. The actual reason for the restriction was that these tags are highly, highly NSFW and Yahoo choosing not to risk shutdown of the Tumblr app and exposure of pornography to minors, the Yahoo staff decided to close these tags temporarily in order to work on a better filtering system. [[http://thisisntjustice.tumblr.com/post/56246275117/jadebotany-okay-allow-me-to-rant-for-a-second See here.]]
* AGoodNameForARockBand: [[http://xkcd.com/1025/ As pointed by]] Webcomic/{{xkcd}}.
* {{Gorn}}: There's quite a few gore blogs for some reason. And by gore, we mean real life gore, not movie gore. Though there's tons of that too.
* {{Goth}}: Many of these, [[PerkyGoth perky]] and otherwise.
* {{Hipster}}: As seen in the page image, a lot of the people on Tumblr are considered hipsters. This doesn't stop a majority of the users from mocking hipster trends relentlessly, often characterizing Tumblr as being divided into the hipster side and the fandom side. Which don't like each other very much, generally. The photograph and art tumblrs are generally left alone.
* HollywoodAtheist: A number of blogs on Tumblr really, really, really dislike religion.
* HurricaneOfPuns: The people of Tumblr love puns. It is not uncommon to see a post that has a several-reblogs-long chain of puns about the original subject.
* {{Hypocrite}}: It has been noted that there appear to be several bloggers who tend to proudly express sentiments that are generally anti-white, privileged, cis-gendered men in nature while also being big fans of actors who, more often than not, are the kind of white, privileged, cis-gendered men they should otherwise be intensely opposed to (such as [[Series/{{Sherlock}} Benedict Cumberbatch]], [[Film/{{Thor}} Tom Hiddleston]], the cast of ''Series/{{Supernatural}}'' and the various actors who've played the Doctor in the new series of ''Series/DoctorWho'', all of whom have overwhelmingly large fan-bases on Tumblr).
** Also, most teenagers on tumblr will complain about being assigned essays for school, when at the same time, they'll write a hundred pages on why Loki blinked looking at Thor.
* ImageMacro: A number of tumblogs are ImageMacro factories, of the sort that recycle one image that represents the subject of the meme (generally with a pie-style background in various colours) and put different captions on it.
* IntentionallyAwkwardTitle: Played with in the popular {{snowclone}} fan blog title, "Fuck Yeah, [Subject]!" Some bloggers use [[{{Bowdlerized}} more polite alternatives]] such as "Eff yeah" or "Heck yeah" to avoid this, as mentioned above.
* InsistentTerminology: Other bloggers are commonly formally referred to as "tumblr user (their url)".
* LargeHam: Almost everyone on the site has made a really hammy post, some more often than others.
* LinkBlog: What tumblogs often become in practice.
* MadLibsCatchPhrase: As noted, single topic tumblogs that catalog or reblog a single focused topic, frequetly fannish, are often titled "fuckyeah(subject)" or the more mild "fyeah(subject)", "effyeah(subject)", "hellyeah(subject)", or similar constructions.
* MoeAnthropomorphism: [[http://4chanxtumblr.tumblr.com/ Tumblr-tan]], who's frequently shipped with Anonymous thanks to the late 2010 drama between the sites.
* MoodWhiplash: Depending on the blogs you follow, your dashboard may have something horribly depressing, some porn, some NightmareFuel, and some silly joke posts, all within the space of ten posts. The same thing can happen while doing an ArchiveBinge of somebody else's Tumblr.
** It can run into it on your blog as well, if you reblog a number of posts simultaneously whilst your queue updates. Has led to the on-site description "Tumblr: Puppies to Porn in Seconds."
*** Case in point being any Creator/{{CLAMP}} related blog where you have a fluffy love confession with sakura petals or a few cute children with angel wings on one post and a torn out eye/cut of limb/some mauling on the next. These bloggers usually complain about how they ruin their own lives with this and then post/like/reblog something sugary seconds later.
* MoralMyopia: Certain unscrupulous Tumblr users won't hesitate to spam inboxes with abusive asks or mocking reblogs, but when people do it to them, ''HARASSMENT IS ILLEGAL, I'M CALLING MY LAWYER.''
* {{Nerdgasm}}: Some bloggers get ''very'' excited about their favourite shows. A trailer alone can cause massive squee attacks.
* NoPunctuationIsFunnier[=/=]AllLowercaseLetters: expect a lot of entries to be
** like this
** guys minus the apostrophes 'n such, but sometimes
** its not there and its usually to snark at someone
* {{NSFW}}: It's best not to do searches while at work or around the family, lest you run into porn (of all shapes). Fortunately, there is an [[http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/30860 app out there]] to save you from the nasties or whatever you don't want to see. Except for the things that were not tagged correctly.
** The kinds of blogs you follow can help cut down on anything you don't want to see, but it can still go from puppies to porn in two seconds.
** There's a lot of otherwise unremarkable blogs with luridly NSFW titles like "crackofsatansass" or "dave-striders-throbbing-cock".
* {{Otaku}}: A large portion of Tumblr could be considered as such.
* PoesLaw: The sheer amount of relative extremism over literally anything - fandom wars, political opinions, et cetera - can make it very hard to determine who's actually being serious and who's just [[{{Troll}} seeing what they can get away with.]]
* PerverseSexualLust[=/=]RuleThirtyFour: There are ''LOTS'' of porn blogs.
* PokeThePoodle: [[http://dailyanarchist.tumblr.com/ Daily Anarchist]] is a mockery of [[AnarchyIsChaos hardcore-trash-the-state-and-smash-windows-for-freedom anarchy]] by... drinking Pepsi from Coke mugs, switching salt and pepper dispensers, cutting outside dotted lines, and improperly heating frozen foods. [[Music/RageAgainstTheMachine Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me.]]
* PoliticalCorrectnessGoneMad: Tumblr is home to left-wing, anti-oppression bloggers who are disparagingly known as "social justice warriors", and they are [[Administrivia/RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgment often accused]] of being this due to their practice of angrily "calling people out" for not recognizing privilege for a variety of reasons. Many of them migrated from the social justice community on Website/LiveJournal, which had (and still does) a similar reputation.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: The pictures of cats, puppies, and other assorted animals frequently posted.
** [[http://tommypom.com/ Tommypom]], Tumblr's more or less official mascot, is a Pomeranian owned by one of the site's engineers. The staff likes to show him off in their own personal blogs, as well as using him to promote the site and notable editorial stories.
* RunningGag: Reacting (seriously or otherwise) to something innocuous as horrendously offensive to a minority/fanbase/common morality/celebrity/fashion.
* SatireParodyPastiche: Very common to find these type of themes blogs, either in the form of pretentious hipsters, or angry social justice warrior. They sometimes come in the form of StealthParody as well.
* SceneryPorn: There are quite a few Tumblrs dedicated to pretty pictures of scenery. Sometimes with a theme, such as skyscrapers, scary-looking places, or [[SceneryGorn abandoned buildings]]. Sometimes not.
* SelfProclaimedKnight: The ''Blog/KnightsOfFandom'', who "protect" Tumblr users from vicious attacks by anonymous individuals.
* SeriousBusiness: Gifs. Losing a follower is often treated like a death scene in one's favorite movie, with .gif spams of {{Heroic BSOD}}s. About the only thing that doesn't make it more serious is that Tumblr doesn't tell you ''who exactly'' unfollowed you, and that's usually easy to suss out if you're not a very popular blog.
** As mentioned in the description, shipping is also ''very'' serious business at Tumblr.
* SoapBoxSadie: While once widely known for its amateur photographer and {{Hipster}} blogs, this has slowly grown to become the widely-accepted stereotype of Tumblr users off the site, with many activists, with varying degrees of seriousness, becoming prominent.
** A lot of people who primarily post other stuff -- fandom stuff, art, SceneryPorn, whatever -- will dabble in social justice blogging (or reblogging), in addition to the more dedicated activists.
** There's a divide between radical feminists and the "mainstream" SJ movement (particularly on transgenderism and homosexuality). In fact, there's usually a divide on about any issue - it's not uncommon to see bloggers fight each over about how offensive something is, how extreme one should be when dealing with issues (the aforementioned divide isn't limited to radical feminists versus everyone else), or what direction social justice should take and what issues they should tackle. Also, the plural/otherkin/transabled community and animal rights community try to integrate into the "mainstream" SJ movement -- but continue to remain on the fringes.
** The character of "Social Justice Sally" is a parody of this tendency, sending up bloggers who know all the buzzwords and vitriol but lack any real understanding of the actual issues, and will hypocritically attack anything that they think is offensive, while letting other blatantly bigoted things slide because it's not ''their'' problem, or because they're bigoted themselves.
* StealthParody: Many {{troll}}s pretend to be extreme [=SJWs=]. They often use as many labels as possible, often including mutually exclusive ones and absurd ones (‘plantkin’), and exaggerate points of contention to illogical extremes. They manage to fool a lot of people, mostly non-[=SJWs=], who use them as examples to bash the SJW community.
* SuddenlyShouting: When excited, some users tend to start screAMING IN THE MIDDLE OF A SENTENCE. Will also be seen as a form of {{Angrish}}.
* TakeThat: From the example chat on the "new chat post" page, taken from an Overheard in New York post:
-->'''Tourist:''' Could you give us directions to Olive Garden?
-->'''New Yorker:''' No, but I could give you directions to an actual Italian restaurant.[[note]]As backstory, Tumblr (and a chunk of its userbase) is based out of New York. Many New Yorkers absolutely despise the chain restaurants that cater to tourists around Times Square. This is taken from the "Overheard in New York" site.[[/note]]
* {{Troll}}: Between random rude anonymous asks, [[FanHater hate blogs dedicated to hating on a fandom or celebrity]], and [[TheGadfly gleefully rolling around in the counter-hate]], the angry social justice warriors who will leap on you for anything (and the trolls who pretend to be one to annoy other social justice warriors), and flame wars of every caliber, it's little surprise Tumblr has its share.
* UrbanLegend: It was once trivially easy to attribute a post to the staff blog, or CNN, or any number of reputable sources that never said a word about it through some editing.
** To figure out if it's legit or not, click the username. If links to the specific post, it's real. If it leads you to the blog's main page, someone's trying to trick you.
** It's also fertile ground for more traditional urban legends, usually of the LuridTalesOfDoom variety such as rape gangs using lost children as bait and HIV needles in petrol pumps.
** There was once one that went UpToEleven with this. Somebody posted an image of them with a old toy with a button and said that the button would release a virus on tumblr, closing it. Despite the obviousness, the intended misspelling of "Tumbler", people still believed it. It got so bad, the staff removed all traces of the post, and even reported the user who made the post.
* WantonCrueltyToTheCommonComma: Much like [[Literature/{{Discworld}} the books they originated from]], punctuation and capitalisation are sometimes regarded as a 'pin the tail on the donkey game'. Grammar goes out the window on meme tagging as well ("i can't", "so many feels", "your show could never", "what a good", "how do you [noun]", etc).
* WeAllLiveInAmerica: More often than not PlayedForLaughs.
-->''IN AMERICA WE USE MONEY NOT HAIR COMBS''
** Averted during the Series/EurovisionSongContest, when you'll be flooded with Europeans mocking the U.S. for not joining the fun.
** Also a frequent accusation towards certain social justice warriors who tend to apply the cultural and racial mores of America to the entire website regardless of whether the person they're condemning or not is even American. Eurocentrism, especially, is considered a problem by activists.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: Users can be this, specifically the ones who run very classy unassuming SFW blogs. The thing is when you like something NSFW it won't appear on your blog (as opposed to re-blogging). HOWEVER the person who blogged that thing you just liked can actually see what you just liked. It can be kinda jarring seeing a born-again Christian female like that gorn post, or that DP/facial/lesbian/gangbang/bukakke gif set, sleazy story or whatever you just posted.
* YouAreNotAlone: Many promote this as their advantage over Facebook.
** And they're right. Despite all the flak Tumblr takes for the "social justice warriors," if someone seems even ''vaguely'' suicidal, their inbox will get spammed with positive messages like some sort of emotional SWAT team was alerted.
** Often, a follower of that person's blog will post on their own, asking others to send that person messages to help them feel better.
* YouKeepUsingThatWord: You can find any word on Tumblr and see it used in any context, even in contexts not appropriate for it's meaning or phrase, so don't be surprised if you end up thinking this, a lot.

!! Trope '''Trope | Photo | Quote | Link | Chat | Audio | Video

* {{Adorkable}}:
* AnimalReactionShot: Extremely popular here.
* AntiPoopSocking:
* BerserkButton:
---> (◡‿◡✿)
---> (ʘ‿ʘ✿) What you say about x?
---> (ʘ‿ʘ)ノ✿ Hold my flower.
* {{Crossover}}: Don't freak out if you ever see a "[[Podcast/WelcomeToNightVale Welcome To ]][[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic My Little ]][[WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra Legend Of ]][[Manga/AttackOnTitan Attack On ]][[Anime/TigerAndBunny Tiger And ]][[Series/{{Supernatural}} Super]][[Webcomic/{{Axis Powers Hetalia}} Heta]][[Series/{{Hannibal}} Hanni]][[Series/DoctorWho Who]][[Film/TheAvengers2012 Avenger]][[Anime/{{Free}} Free]][[VideoGame/{{Off}} Off]][[Series/{{Sherlock}} Lock]][[Literature/HarryPotter Potter]][[Webcomic/{{Homestuck}} stuck]]" post on your dashboard.
* AGoodNameForARockBand: [[http://xkcd.com/1025/ As pointed by]] Webcomic/{{xkcd}}.

Added DiffLines:

* AllForNothing: This was the salt in the wound with the adult content ban: aside from being rather obviously enacted over a potential loss of revenue in the app store, the ban failed to impact ''any'' of the problems that inspired it (if anything, the spawning and activity of porn bots ''increased''). The image recognition tech was quickly discovered to be rather faulty (as in, it flagged ''[[https://gizmodo.com/tumblrs-porn-filter-flags-its-own-examples-of-permitted-1831151178 its own post of allowed content]]''), so it was ditched in favor of tag-based post deletion... which meant that users that really wanted to post porn could simply change the tags and avoid getting flagged. Worse, many LGBT tags (such as #gay and #lesbian) were cleared due to a large amount of porn in them, while tags such as #fascism and #fashwave were left almost entirely untouched. For all intents and purposes, Tumblr was left in worse shape than before the adult content ban was enacted.
* {{Angrish}}:
* AnimalReactionShot: Highly popular here.
* AntiPoopSocking: There's a limit of 5 asks per hour and 250 posts per day.
* CostumePorn: Tumblr was the best place for artists to get their work noticed, and this was never more true for any than for cosplay artists.
* SceneryPorn: There are quite a few blogs dedicated to pretty pictures of scenery. Sometimes with a theme, such as skyscrapers, scary-looking places, or abandoned buildings. Sometimes not. For a while, a common example was the infamous "Do You Love the Color of the Sky" posts, which spawned first large amounts of vitriol as users complained that it was a nightmare to scroll past, and then spawned infinite parodies.
* SoapBoxSadie: The "go outside" treatment is often given to individuals who delve too far into their own ideas of social justice even today.
* SpiritualSuccessor:
** Tumblr itself is this to {{Website/MySpace}}, in all of the right ''and'' wrong ways, to GenerationXerox levels.
** [=DashCon=] has had its own spiritual successors in subsequent disasters of community organizing, to the point where Fyre Fest and Tanacon are linked in the "See Also" section of the page on Wikipedia.
** After "the Xkit guy" came under an false accusation of harassment and mob mentality kicked in, he deleted and has not returned. "New Xkit" came in to pick up where he left off.
* WeAllLiveInAmerica:
** A frequent deconstruction of a pervading social justice post is that it's centered on a viewpoint that could only originate in America or an otherwise privileged first-world country in the west.
** Many users have grown tired of "things Americans do" posts by British bloggers who are convinced something completely normal in numerous parts of the world is something alien because it isn't called the same thing.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: Users can be this, specifically the ones who run very classy unassuming SFW blogs. While likes don't appear on your blog (as opposed to re-blogging), the person who blogged that thing you just liked ''can'' see what you just liked. It can be kinda jarring seeing a born-again Christian female like a gorn post or a DP/facial/lesbian/gangbang/bukakke gif set, sleazy story or whatever you just posted.
* YouAreNotAlone: The most positive part of Tumblr is the userbase's unfailing attitude towards helping those in need. Recent times have made this more prominent, but even outside the realm of [=GoFundMe=] posts and organized relief, it's still very easy to find someone to talk to your problems about on Tumblr.
* YouKeepUsingThatWord: You can find any word on Tumblr and see it used in any context, even in contexts not appropriate for it's meaning or phrase, so don't be surprised if you end up thinking this, a lot.

** It's come to the point where many just assume all users they come across are female unless explicitly stated otherwise. Which can get a little disconcerting for those of us who are guys on there.
** This, combined with the fangirling over celebrities and huge amount of porn, was rather brilliantly summed up by the statement "Tumblr is like this weird alternate universe where 15 year old girls obsessively stalk 40 year old men in vans".
** There's actually a fandom for the "men of tumblr", mainly for doing silly/creative things, or subverting gender roles.
