** His partner, TheFalcon, is Sam Wilson. Like Steve, he once came up with an alias by essentially changing the order of his names.

->"Two first names, two first names, if you only got one name, it's like having no names, baby get two names."
-->-- Creator/NeilPatrickHarris, Saturday Night Live

Many superheroes and their associates have surnames that are also common given names. This is almost as common as the AlliterativeName, and, in fact, many heroes qualify in both categories. This is a side effect of the American habit of using common last names as first names, possibly in an attempt to make them sound as non-ethnic as possible, so British readers might not recognize some of these surnames as first names.

This can make a LastNameBasis to be difficult to realize at first.
----
!!Examples

* Clark Kent.
* Bruce Wayne.
** Comicbook/Robins Nightwing Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Carrie Kelley, Damian Wayne, Duke Thomas, and, while not technically a Robin, John Blake. Stephanie Brown is the only Robin not to have this. Cassandra Cain and Barbara Gordon also have this, though with opposite-gender surnames.
** Hush a.k.a. Thomas Elliot. When he and Bruce were kids, it was lampshaded by the two of them.
** ComicBook/Catwoman, a.k.a. Selina Kyle
* Barry Allen and Bart Allen.
** Jay Garrick as well. With Barry and Bart, at least, it really only makes sense when you realize that their full first name is actually a Patronymic (it's still very rare as a first name, though, apparently because people can't be bothered with saying anything quadrisyllabic).
* Peter Parker, though "Parker" has only recently become common as a given name.
* Charles Xavier (although this is pronounced differently to the first name, which is generally pronounced "zavv-ee-ay" rather than "ex-ay-vee-er"; the last name is also generally pronounced this way, but Middle America wouldn't have noticed it started with an X). The pronunciation is actually more slippery than this, as it has changed since the time of St. Francis Xavier (Which is pronounced Zay-Vee-Er, by the by). Javier is a phonetic respelling of the name in modern Spanish. However, the Portuguese pronounce the name with a sh sound.
* It's a requirement for a Franchise/GreenLantern from Earth:
** Alan Scott.
** Hal Jordan.
** Guy Gardner. (Named after famed SilverAge DC scribe Gardner Fox.)
** John Stewart. (No, not that one.)
** Kyle Rayner (though as a first name it would typically be spelled Rainer).
** Jade AKA Jennifer-Lynn Hayden.
* Bobby "Iceman" Drake.
* Steve Rogers. He even used the alias "Roger Stevens" once.
** His partner, TheFalcon, is Sam Wilson. Like Steve, he once came up with an alias by essentially changing the order of his names.
* Donald Blake.
* Cain Marko is an TVTropesDrinkingGame egregious example, where a given name that doesn't make a particularly good surname is pressed into service to make a MeaningfulName. Could be completely avoided by calling him "Marco Kane" or something along these lines.
* Kent "DoctorFate" Nelson.
* Ronald Raymond, the first Comicbook/Firestorm.
* Rex "Hourman" Tyler.
** And his son, Rick Tyler. And the Hourman from the 853rd Century, an android who went by the name Matthew Tyler.
* Crispus Allen, one host of the Spectre.
* Ted "Wildcat" Grant.
* James Jesse, the first Trickster. To be fair, he chose this name after Jesse James. His birth name is Giovanni Giuseppe (which is itself an example of this trope).
* Both versions of CaptainAtom: the Comics version is Allen Adam, while DC's is Nathaniel Adam (actually a case of Three First Names, as his full name is Nathaniel Christopher Adam).
** This seems to be a rather fond trope for the writers of the DCU and Marvel, as well as alliterative naming. Justified in that this may be a way to help the writers remember the names of several characters. Creator/StanLee himself has said that this is why so many of Marvel's characters have an AlliterativeName -- it helps him remember.
* Garfield Mark Logan.
* Franchise/PowerRangers has a few:
** Zack Taylor. (Black Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger)
** Jason Scott. (Red Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger/Gold Zeo Ranger)
** Tommy Oliver. (Green/White Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger/Red Zeo Ranger/Red Turbo Ranger/Black Dino Thunder Ranger)
*** Double Points for being played by Jason David Frank.
** Justin Stewart. (Blue Turbo Ranger)
** Kendrix Morgan. (Pink Lost Galaxy Ranger)
** Dana Mitchell. (Pink Lightspeed Rescue Ranger)
** Chad Lee. (Blue Lightspeed Rescue Ranger)
** Ryan Mitchell. (Titanium Lightspeed Rescue Ranger)
** Jen Scotts comes close. (Pink Time Force Ranger)
** Wes Collins comes close. (Red Time Force Ranger)
** Cole Evans comes close. (Red Wild Force Ranger)
** Shane Clarke comes close. (Red Wind Ranger)
** Ethan James. (Blue Dino Thunder Ranger)
** Bridge Carson. (Green/Blue/Red S.P.D. Ranger)
** Nick Russell. (Red Mystic Force Ranger)
** Theo Martin. (Jungle Fury Blue Ranger)
** Scott Truman. (RPM's Ranger Series Operator Red)
* ComicBook/AllFallDown has Sophie Mitchell.
* Eddie Brock, the original Comicbook/Venom.
* Michael Bruce - Also his father Matthew Bruce, who later renames himself Ulysses David.

* Roy Raymond, TV detective.
* Steve Trevor.
* Commissioner Jim Gordon.
* ComicStrip/DickTracy.
* Alex Raymond. (He's a cartoonist.)
* Philip Nowlan. (As is he.)
* Series/StargateSG1:
** Jonas Quinn. (What's even more amusing is that he's an alien, but his name sounds less alien than that of his actor, Corin Nemec.)
** Cameron Mitchell (a man who has two first names that are also two last names).
* James Kirk. Which becomes Three First Names when counting his middle name, "Tiberius."which was a given name in ancient Rome.
* Sliders Quinn Mallory.
** Quinn's brother Colin Mallory, and his father Michael. Also Professor Max Arturo.
* Marcus and Spencer Damon.
* Charles Logan and George Mason.
* Patrick Jane of Series/TheMentalist, though his surname is common to women, not men.
* Creator/ThomasJane from Film/ThePunisher2004.
* Psych Shawn Spencer.
* John Connor as well as his parents Sarah Connor and .
* Derek Morgan. Also, Spencer Reid. Since almost everyone on the show in on LastNameBasis, some fans even forget that Reid isn't his first name.
* For another Morgan, let's look at Dexter Morgan, although, technically, he was adopted by Harry Morgan, so it's not his birth surname (his biological parents' surnames don't really fit the pattern: Driscoll and Moser).
* Shawn Hunter.
* Rupert Giles.
* NY}} Mac Taylor. Probably also Lindsay Monroe, until she became Lindsay Messer.
* Richie Ryan.
* In The Burglar in the Rye, Bernie uses the aliases Peter Jeffries and Jeffrey Peters, as he keeps forgetting which way around his name was supposed to be.

* ComicBook/LoisLane.
* Supergirl Linda Lee. (Later Linda Danvers.)
* SpiderMan’s Gwen Stacy. Mary Jane is an aversion; she has two first names, but her last name is Watson.
* Kino Makoto; both surname and given name can be used by both men and women.
* Mikan Sakura
* Nanami Lucia.
* Allison Cameron.
* Ann Meredith, from Creator/AgathaChristie's Cards on the Table.
* Charlotte "Chuck" Charles and her father, Charles Charles.
* Suki Yumiko, a member of the Comicbook/Nova Corps.
* Lyta Alexander.
* Selina Kyle.

* Ann Marie was the main character of the 1960s show Series/ThatGirl and actually complained about her name at times.
* Jimmy James, "the man so nice they named him twice," in Series/NewsRadio.
** Also Dave Nelson, Matthew Brock, Max Louis, and Jimmy's ArchEnemy Johnny Johnson.
* In Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice for All, Max Galactica's real name is revealed to be Billy Bob Johns. Nick hangs a lampshade on it in one inner monologue. "Yikes! The poor guy's got three first names! I guess that is pretty odd."
* There are more than a few pro-wrestlers that fit here: Wrestling/StoneColdSteveAustin, Simon Dean, Chris Harris, Trevor Murdoch, Wrestling/MarkHenry, Matt Morgan, Nick & Matt & Malachi Jackson, Kip James, Wrestling/KellyKelly, Donovan Morgan, Ricky Marvin, Brian Christopher, Shane Douglas, Dave Taylor, Chuck Taylor (no relation), Vin Gerard, Jerry Lynn, Wrestling/CandiceMichelleShelton Benjamin, Wrestling/JoeyRyan. Wrestling/ShawnMichaels, Wrestling/Stevie Richards, Davey Richards (no relation), Wrestling/ChristopherDaniels, Eddie Edwards, Wrestling/JimmyJacobs, Jack Evans, Erick Stevens and Petey Williams come close. Wrestling/MickieJames is a female wrestler with two traditionally male names, Alex Shelley a male wrestler with two female names. Simon Dean is actually named after wrestler Wrestling/DeanMalenko, whose real name is Dean Simon.
** On a recent episode of Wrestling/TNA Impact, the Main Event Mafia took over the show and made two referees fight Wrestling/Booker T. The referees' names were Rudy Charles and Andrew Thomas, which ring announcer Wrestling/ScottSteiner pointed out during introductions.
** Daniel Bryan...whose real name is Wrestling/BryanDanielson.
** Wrestling/JimRoss, whose full name is James William Ross.
** Wrestling/JustinGabriel whose real name is Paul Lloyd Jr.
* Ricky Bobby, the eponymous NASCAR prodigy from Film/TalladegaNightsTheBalladOfRickyBobby. This is lampshaded early on, when his team's owner states, "He's got two first names!"
* From SurvivalOfTheFittest: Mason Lucien, Chance Burton, Thom Chuck, Waldo Woodrow, Blake Ross, Matthew Drew, Horace Malcolm, Jack Russell, Ryan Gilbert, and at least 20 more in V4 alone.
* John Carter
** Also Doug Ross
** Carol Hathaway
** Susan Lewis
** Carla Reese (She uses the name Reese for her son)
** Maggie Doyle
* From the Series/Scrubs episode "My Occurrence":
-->Hematopathologist: Call me Dr. Bob.
-->J.D.: You go by your first name?
-->Hematopathologist: No, first name's Fred.
-->J.D.: Fred Bob?
** Also J.D. stands for John Dorian.
* Campbell Alexander from Creator/JodiPicoult's MySistersKeeper.
* Lloyd Martin in the book They Melted His Brain. Naturally, nearly everyone thinks his name is Martin Lloyd. (Or was it the other way round?)
* Doctor Gordon Gordon Wyatt from Series/Bones.
** Also Vincent Nigel-Murray.
* Rose Tyler and Clara Oswald.
* James Wilson, Alison Cameron and Robert Chase from Series/House.
* Andy Mitchell
* Brock Samson
%% * From Literature/TheMortalInstruments, Jace, whose full name is Jonathan Christopher Wayland. [[spoiler: We think. It's really only the last name that's a point of debate, so whether it's Wayland, Morgenstern, Lightwood, or Herondale, he's still an example.]]
* Jacob Taylor from VideoGame/MassEffect2.
* Literature/JackRyan
* Dean Thomas of the Franchise/HarryPotter series.
* SweeneyTodd
* Veronica and Velma Kelly of Theatre/Chicago and its film adaptation.
* John Curtis and Nick Bradley of Series/SecretArmy.
* Takayuki Narumi, who also appeared in MuvLuv. Both Takayuki and Narumi are used as first names in Japan.
** From MuvLuv Total Eclipse side story, we have Rick Sven.
* Homura Akemi from Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica. Many of the other characters, such as Madoka Kaname, Sayaka Miki and Kyoko Sakura, have last names that sound and/or can be used as first names, but are still valid last names.
* Miyako Yoshika. Or Yoshika Miyako. Miyako is the family name.
* Rio Wesley of Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaViVid. No, this isn't misplaced.
* Izumi Sakurai from Nichijou. This is Lampshaded in-story.
* Asuka Sakura from the movie Welcome to the Quiet Room. Lampshaded when someone jokingly points out that her name sounds like something from a comic book.
* In LifeWithLouie, it's pointed out that the bullies in the show always seem to have two first names, such as Craig Erik, Paul George, and the worst of them all, Glen Glenn.
* From Anime/PrettyCure: all the females of the Kurumi family, Mana and Ayumi Aida, Alice Yotsuba, . Interestingly, neither Aida nor doesn't seem to be common female names in Japan -- [[spoiler:there are a few Aguris in fiction, but they're Garo both male.]]
* Seems to be a theme on Series/TheOffice when it comes to the regional managers (not counting those who didn't stay in the manager's chair for more than three episodes) :
** The main character of the UK original is named David Brent.
** His counterpart in the US version is named Michael Scott.
*** After Michael left, a number of candidates applied for his job, among which were Fred Henry, Nellie Bertram and the aforementioned David Brent. The one to eventually get the job was Andy Bernard.
*** Other (non-manager) characters include David Wallace, Ryan Howard and Angela Martin.
* In , anyone in the Martin family: Robert Martin and Elizabeth Martin.
* Sayaka Yumi and her father Dr. Gennosuke Yumi from Anime/MazingerZ. The main protagonist Kouji Kabuto also qualifies, although Kabuto is rarely used as a first name.
* Yukiko Maya of .
* Francihse/RoboCop's superior officer, Sgt. Reed has three first names, as there was a ContinuitySnarl as to what his given name was--the first movie gave it as "John", while the second gave it as "Warren". If you include Alpha Commando, he has four as the series renamed him "Joe".
* Played for laughs on The Drew Carey Show when Mimi remarks "Drew Alison Carey? Geez, all *three* of your names are girl names."
* Thunderbirds Jeff Tracy and his sons.

* Jon Stewart from Series/TheDailyShow. Inevitable, since Stewart is a showbiz adaptation of his middle name. He was born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz.

* Tim Allen (Series/HomeImprovement) was born Timothy Alan Dick.

This is a side effect of the American habit of using common last names as first names, possibly in an attempt to make them sound as non-ethnic as possible -- and possible, so British readers might not recognize some of these surnames as first names.

* Francihse/RoboCop's superior officer, Sgt. Reed has three first names, as there was a ContinuitySnarl as to what his given name was--the first movie gave it as "John", while the second gave it as "Warren". Hell, if you include Alpha Commando, he was four as the series renamed him "Joe".

** Jay Garrick as well, and Wally West might count, although the only West that leaps to mind is the guy from Series/Heroes. With Barry and Bart, at least, it really only makes sense when you realize that their full first name is actually a Patronymic (it's still very rare as a first name, though, apparently because people can't be bothered with saying anything quadrisyllabic).
