There are characters that wield a solitary sword, or any other kind of close quarters weapon, to fight. Many times, supported by a shield, to better protect their unarmed side. There are those that to showcase their skill, prefer to wield two at the same time, stating how good they are at their craft. Given how difficult it can be to muster the ability and concentration to effectively use two weapons at the same time.

Then these guys appeared, and decided to take that difficulty Main/UpToEleven.

Either due to magical abilities, or telekinetic ones, these characters can either summon or carry with them a multitude of flying bladed and blunt weapons. Sometimes being real metal weapons, and sometimes being a SpectralWeaponCopy multiplied several times. Ranging from a few, to hundreds, that will float magically behind their back while they fight and wield them. In the majority of cases, they will normally only use swords. But many will also add spears, hammers and such to their repertory. Swords than then, they will either launch indiscriminately at their enemies in overwhelming fashion, or will keep close to them doing deadly circles.

That's because users of this type of fighting style can be divided on two categories:

* Those whose main strategy is invoking a Main/FlechetteStorm of dozens or even hundreds of weapons on their enemies, which will transform into a Main/StormOfBlades if they are powerful enough. Doing it most of the time from certain distance, without barely needing to lift a finger, keeping their enemies jumping on their toes while they try to evade their attacks. In case the enemy manages to get close enough to them, they will use their flying blades as a shield to protect themselves. Or directly grab one in order to make things finally close and personal, having the strenght and skill needed to make an enemy yield with their powerful blows.

* The blade dancers. Typically a female character, that will carry a much lower number of blades than the former. Normally varying from four to ten. They distinguish themselves by making things much more close and personal than the former, never keeping their blades more than a few meters away. Blades that will move in geometrically beautiful patterns around them, guided by the gestures of their arms and body. Which will make them look as if they were dancing, given the elegancy of their movements. This style of fighting will also center more around evasive movements and deflecting attacks, rather than using overwhelming numbers.

Even then, expect many character examples to have some elements of both categories.

Mind that this trope involves only characters whose style of fighting, at least partially, involves using flying weapons with regularity. It does not involve those that only use it as a SpecialAttack, or FinishingMove.

** Gilgamesh is the perfect example of the "floating armory" variant. He is so arrogant, and owns so many powerful Noble Phantasms, that instead of wielding his personal weapon he will simply stand around smugly while a near infinite supply of lesser (but still legendary) weapons strike down his enemies for him. Though he's rarely seen surrounded by the weapons themselves, but rather by portals to his royal treasury, from which their ends can be seen poking out ready for launch.
** The second route, Unlimited Blade Works, is named for the endless FieldOfBlades inside Archer's heart which contains records of every weapon he has seen. Due to Archer being uninjured in this route, he's able to show the full extent of his SpontaneousWeaponCreation abilities, which culminates in him and Shirou being able to manifest Unlimited Blade Works into reality and make all its swords rise up to fight for them. Because they're actually wielding the weapons, not merely launching them as projectiles, this allows Shirou to overwhelm Gilgamesh's StormOfBlades with his own, despite his weapons being technically weaker than the originals.
** In the final route, Heaven's Feel, the BadEnding "Sparks Liner High" has Shirou enter Dancer territory with the "Triple-Linked Crane Wings" technique - generating multiple copies of Archer's paired swords Kanshou and Bakuya (which can return like boomerangs if one is thrown while the other is held), filling them with explosive levels of mana, and overwhelming his opponent by charging into melee while unleashing rapid attacks from all directions. It's a BadEnding because this Shirou is no longer compatible with Unlimited Blade Works, and the backlash from tapping so much of its power kills him before he can land the finishing blow.

Cleaning up the bad grammar.

* Penny Poledina from WebAnimation/RWBY is an example of the second variant, with some characteristics of the first. Her number of blades is limited and low, and due to the strings attached to them, she can't move them really far. Most of the time, she simply makes them move in circles around her, keeping her enemies at bay. But she can also combine them to canalize powerful shots of energy, able to take down enemy ships, and such.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kreia_kotorcg.jpg]]

* LightNovel/TheAsteriskWar: After her original rapier-style Lux, Aspera Spina, is Weapon at the climax of the Phoenix Festa, Julis is given a prototype Rect Lux. Nova Spina consists of four Laser Blades that she can manipulate remotely.
* Byakuya Kuchicki from Manga/Bleach. His Zanpakuto can split into thousands or more tiny or large blades to skewer his enemies from all directions.
* Gilgamesh, from the Franchise/FateSeries, is the perfect example of the first variant. He is so arrogant, and his Noble Phantasm so powerful, that he will stay put with a smug look, as if everyone was beneath him, while a near infinite supply of legendary weapons strike his enemies down at his beck and call.
** And at least in Anime/FateStayNightUnlimitedBladeWorks, both Archer and Shirou also are shown to be capable of doing this. Thanks mainly to their ability of copying any weapon they see.
* In LightNovel/Overlord2012, there exist two examples of the second variant. Edström, for the Six Arms, that plays it as straight as possible, being and dressing like a dancer, while her blades move around her. Then there is Lakyus, leader of the Blue Roses, but that simply uses the floating swords on her back as another tool on her diverse arsenal.
* Princess Nashetania Loei Piena Augustra from LightNovel/RokkaNoYuusha is the heir apparent to the kingdom, and has been named "Saint of Blades." Her magic power enables her to summon multiple blades from the ground (and sometimes thin air), attack an adversary in formation, or form a kind of spinning shield. These blades then disappear when not needed. The princess intersects with LadyOfWar and SilkHidingSteel.

She can also easily summon her used swords back into her sheathe with the bat of an eye.

* Franchise/BlazBlue: Nu-13 and her clone, Lambda-11, use the magically levitated swords that always accompany them for their heavy attacks. They can also summon up spectral blades for their drive attacks and supers.
* Franchise/Castlevania: The Ruler Sword enemies are huge swords which attack by levitating collections of weapons at the protagonists.
*VideoGame/HollowKnight: Xero, one of the Warrior Dreams, fights with two nails hovering near him and launching them at the player character. At low health, he summons two more nails, making the fight more difficult.
* In VideoGame/KingdomHeartsII, Xaldin has power over wind and uses this to attack with his weapons without touching them.
* Darth Traya, from VideoGame/KnightsOfTheOldRepublicIITheSithLords, fights by controling three lightsabers at once, making them levitate around her with the Force.
* Irelia, from VideoGame/LeagueOfLegends, is a great example of the second variant, to the point of being her main descriptor. Adapting the ancient dances of her people, which she loved to practice, to her use of telekinetic blades to strike down the Noxians invading her land.
* In VideoGame/Nioh2, the final boss Otakemaru is a variation/subversion of this trope: Tri-wielding colossal blades, one in his normal arms and two more in the disembodied hands behind him. It's also a cue for his elemental attacks- the element he's using matches the sword in his normal hands.
* In VideoGame/PaperMarioTheThousandYearDoor, the boss Cortez is a ghost pirate who fights with four different swords. In one of his phases, they fly in front of him and protect him.
* The FinalBoss of VideoGame/SamuraiShodown: Warriors Rage is Oboro, the mastermind of The Three Blades of Dominion (aka The Razor Trio). He's an old weak man but has mastered the telekinesis and instead to fight him, Oboro controls two magical and cursed swords the player has to defeat, being one of the most hardest bosses to defeat in the franchise.
* VideoGame/Terraria: This is how the Zenith functions; firing an assortment of blades (some of which require a lot of time to get) and decimating anything caught in its range.
* VideoGame/Timespinner: Lunais, the protagonist, has telekinetic powers, and uses those powers to throw around orbs as her basic attacks. As the game progresses, Lunais can acquire orbs that transform into swords, hammers, and even guns. Some late-game bosses use similar fighting styles and powers.
* VideoGame/TotallyAccurateBattleSimulator: The Swordcaster is a unit in the Spooky Faction that fights by throwing the swords floating around him at an enemy. If he is defeated, he will impale himself with these blades, hitting anyone who happens to be too close to him.
