It's as badass as it sounds.

Since the rule was that the loser was the person who's ball hit the ground first, some of the smarter players realized they could throw their own ball high in the air and then use both of the their hands to attack the opponent with downward strikes, pushing their opponent's ball to the dirt before their own finally landed.
