An uncommon variant on this is the giving character says, "You'll need this more than I do." - common amongst elders who have IAmDyingPleaseTakeMyMacguffin advanced beyond the need for an item. Compare GrailInTheGarbage. Not to be confused with VendorTrash.

If the item turns out to have sentimental value, it is a MementoMacguffin.

VendorTrash, which is only valuable in large quantities. If the item turns out to have sentimental value, it is a MementoMacguffin.

the "obviously" part kinda subverts the trope and that aspect of The Call Twinks You falls more under Notice This, so... rephrased.

junk. Generally, this happens fairly early in the story--in The Hero's Journey, it's one of the first steps.

** Ehhh, no. When Vaan gets captured the enemies get the Dusk Shard, but what they do with it is try to measure its energy... on the turbine of the airship. Big explosion, a whole imperial fleet destroyed and our heroes safely escape, ready to keep on with their adventure. Besides, the villian doesn't resurrect an ancient superairship: he has a newly created superairship that needs a huge amount of energy in order to work (but yeah, it's our heroes who end up providing the energy).

* Standard policy for adventure games is that if it's not nailed down, take it, you'll need it. If it IS nailed down, find a way to remove the nails and take it. And take the nails too. Many, many early adventure games punished people for following this advice before realizing that it was a bad idea. For example, in Uninvited, picking up a certain seemingly important gem results in being demonically possessed about three turns later. Whoops.
