** Actually, this troper thinks "The Gentle Vultures" ''subverted'' InYourNatureToDestroyYourselves. ** The main problem the Hurrians encounter is that they are used to see what the above troper says - they tend to encounter "competitive" hominids that tend to destroy each other as soon as they get nuclear weapons, instead of "cooperative" hominids like the Hurrians are. When they arrive to the Moon, it's a little before the end of WorldWarII, and since they detected the Hiroshima/Nagasaki atomic bombings, they thought humans would start using the big guns against each other very soon. However, they tripped with a small snag: they didn't predict that there was a chance that humans would develop more powerful nuclear weaponry ''without'' using the previous ones in a war. Basically, they missed the whole idea of Mutually Assured Destruction. HilarityEnsues when, fifteen years after they arrive, they try to investigate why humans haven't started a nuclear war yet: when the human they sequester compares them to vultures, it sicks them so much that they leave the moon and realise that none of them will be able to continue with the whole schtick of "wait till they destroy themselves and then help them for a tax". Heavily pounded in when the Hurrians notice that the human is very much insensitivized to the simile he produces.

According to the more pessimistic sociologists, this is TruthInTelevision. Even the non-heavy drinkers agree that we possess this tendency. The basic reason for this is that our technical ingenuity -- that is, our ability to devise new ways of building and doing things -- is advancing faster than our social ingenuity -- that is, our ability to devise new ways to associate and relate with one another. Part of this problem stems from our biology -- at the core of every mammal brain is a snappish crocodile that is upset when others enter its territory or make sudden moves around them. Behavioral patterns that once ensured our survival now court destruction. Luckily, the desire for self preservation keeps this in check - there's a reason the United States never had a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union: they didn't want to be destroyed themselves.

Of course this isn't true in nature, especially with predatory animals who will kill members of their own species to preserve their own genetic heritage or because food is scarce. Anyway, events in End of Evangelion are probably explained by the idea that it's in human nature to will it's own destruction into existence.
