Sure, there's some cracks like the MoodWhiplash of Sayori's chronic depression and Yuri cutting herself, but it's still relatively heartfelt... until Sayori [[DrivenToSuicide kills herself]] due to MindRape PsychicAssistedSuicide from the BigBad, Monika. Things get ''really'' OffTheRails as a result as Monika becomes an outright malicious force and the setting devolves into PsychologicalHorror, [[JumpScare Jump Scares]], {{Jump Scare}}s, Yuri going full {{Yandere}} and the setting turning out to be a digital CosmicHorrorStory... while much of the nightmarish descent is regularly broken up into various moments of {{Bathos}} to offset the attention, such as Monika hacking in her own version of the poem minigame and the silliness of Act 1 being a fitting MoodWhiplash device for the far darker later acts.]]
