* In the Japanese miniseries ''The Days'', a line of workmen are trying to maneuver a long and heavy power cable through the flooded Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant when one of them suddenly disappears, then a second man as everyone thrashes about looking for him. They're able to rescue the two men but are forced to stop what they're doing because the covers have come off the street's manholes, which they can't see in the GrimyWater.

* Seen this as early as ''Film/{{Jaws 2}}'', where a character is unable to get herself from safety as the shark approaches her.

* ''The Devil at 4 O'Clock'' tries to justify this with a reference to the water as "[[QuicksandSucks quicksand]]," but examination of it reveals that it's liquid enough that swimming shouldn't be a problem. The swimmers are quite obviously swimming in place--expected for the drowning fellow, who's blindly panicking, but not so much for the fellow trying to rescue him.
* A murder sequence in ''Film/{{Psycho}}'' ripoff ''Film/{{Dementia 13}}'' has the victim swimming to the edge of a lake, only to encounter the ax-wielding killer standing on the shore. Does she swim back the way she came? No. She just thrashes around and screams while he chops her up.

* In the first ''Literature/KingdomKeepers'' book, Finn and Philiby have to navigate [[Ride/DisneyThemeParks Splash Mountain]] without a log. Oddly, [[IdiotBall neither has a plan for navigating the big drop until just before they drop it]].

* In the ''Literature/WarriorCats'' book ''The Place of No Stars'', a lot of the action centers around a lake in the Dark Forest (cat {{Hell}}) with unusual black water. Just seeing it causes inexplicable fear in Rootspring and an instinct that falling in would be a "fate worse than drowning". Both Rootspring and Shadowsight do fall in, and in the few seconds they're in there, it's described as an unnatural choking sensation rapidly sapping their strength, all while filling them with a deep despair. It's even dangerous to spirits, since an island on the lake is where the villain has trapped all of his enslaved minions; even the [=RiverClan=] spirits seem unable to cross it.
