* Played with in {{Traveller}}. The Terran Confederation is rather like a space USA. The Vilani have a vaguely Confucian feel to them. The Third Imperium very much resembles TheBritishEmpire. The Sword Worlds interestingly enough are a deliberate attempt to justify a FantasyCounterpartCulture; not only are they largely Scandinavian decent but they were influenced by an nativist ideological movement called ''The Viking Revival.'' However it is a bit of a subversion, simply because Swordies seem a more instictively rooted people rather then a wandering people. While they occasionally go on epic space voyages they don't do it very often and prefer their plot of ground. As for Aslan they are kind of like generic tribesfolk though they have their own characteristics unique to them.

***In the book it seems more like the ''really old russia''(I.E. Novgorad and Kiev) and Dalemen are explicitly said to be ethnic cousins of Rohirrim, just as both the Russ(viking Russians) and the Goths were Germanic. Esgaroth, for instance is a freshwater port, just like Novgorad and it's people are known for their commerce along the river.

** For the human cultures: The Empire is early-Renaissance HolyRomanEmpire Germany, Kislev is a blend of pre-Petrine Russia and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Brettonia is France in the high middle ages (with a healthy heaping of Arthurian myth), Estalia and Tilea are renaissance Spain and Italy, and Albion is druidical Britain and Ireland. Further to the East, you've got Araby, Cathay, Nippon, and Ind, which are just medieval European terms for exactly the countries you'd think.

to:

** For the human cultures: The Empire is early-Renaissance HolyRomanEmpire Germany, more or less a late Holy Roman Empire early Imperial Germany type deal. With its Elector Counts voting in the new Emperor, as well as the extreme power of the Church (in this case, the Church of Sigmar) likening it the Holy Roman Empire. It is also worth noting that the first ruler of the Empire was crowned explicitly by the spiritual leader of the tribes, similar to how Charlemagne the founder of the Holy Roman Empire, was crowned by the Pope. In our case, however, the "Pope", is actually the shamanic, barbarian High-Priest of the local WarGod of winter and wolves and is called the "Ar-Ulric". There's also something a bit Pagan Roman about how the Imperials basically deified their founding Emperor (though that was strictly confined to the first guy, and that Church is actually important, unlike the God-Emperor cults that sprung up with the deification of every odd Roman Emperor).
** Sigmar himself is kinda like a combination of Charlemagne (for uniting the tribes and founding the Empire. His massacre of the Chaos-Worshiping Norse tribes could also be likened to the Bloody Verdict of Verden, where Charlemagne massacred pagan Saxons), Alfred the Great (for basically creating his bureaucracy from scratch and generally saving his people from savage Viking invaders, who were basically fucking shit up unopposed before he came along), a bit of Julius Caesar and, as a god, Jesus Christ and Thor.
**
Kislev is a blend of pre-Petrine like medieval Tzarist Russia, Pre-Petrine Russia and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Brettonia is France Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth in the high middle ages (with south, but then swiftly turns into a healthy heaping grim, wide-open cold Mongolic steppe in the north. True to history, Kislev is actually comprised of Arthurian myth), Estalia several ethnic groups and Tilea their cultures. There are renaissance Spain Turkic-Mongolic Ungols in the North, the more traditionally Russian Gospodars in the south who are more numerous and Italy, in charge of the nuts and Albion is druidical Britain bolts, and Ireland. Further way back, a Scandinavian-esque tribal invaders known as the Roppsmenn who used to be the ruling class briefly, after they were driven East by Sigmar for aiding the Chaos-worshiping Norse clans when they came south to fuck shit up. The Gospodars are the most traditionally Russian and have actually taken a role in oppressing the Ungols in the North, having actually cracked down several times on Praag (yes, the name of the Mongol-Turk city is Praag. Deal with it), the center of Ungol culture in the past to keep their power. Ironically, there were hints in the past that the Gospodars are actually an offshoot of the even ''more'' Turkic-Mongolic Kurgans who live even further north. The Roppsmenn, on the other hand, represent the Swedish rulership and Nordic influence on Russia as according to the East, you've got Araby, Cathay, Nippon, and Ind, which are just medieval European terms for exactly the countries you'd think.Primary Chronicle.

** Brettonnia is basically Age of Enlightenment ideas about medieval times crossed with medieval France with a sprinkling of Arthurian chivalry. Though it is implied that much of the shit that permeates Brettonnian society is the result of meddling by nearby Wood Elves to keep them as a meat-shield against nearby threats. With their French naming conventions and 14th century armour and weaponry for their knights and men-at-arms, crossed with the oppressed peasant underclass and reputation for extremely good cuisine and wine, they certainly seem similar to medieval France. The ancestors of the Brettonians, however, resemble Celtic tribesmen. So there's a bit of Brittany in them, I guess?
** Similarly, Albion is Roman-era Britain. Complete with ornery Celtic tribes with angry Druids and magical stone-henge type things.
** Cathay, Ind, Nippon and Araby are just the medieval European terms for the exact same places you're thinking about. And we shall leave it at that.

*** While it is true that the majority of the Warriors of Chaos tend to be from Norsca, there are other Northland dwelling human races that also join them on Chaos incursions. For one thing, there are Kurgans, who are basically a race of Turkic-Slavic (to the extent that the Kurgan tribes are actually named verbatim after real life Turkic groups, such as the Dolgans; Kul is another Kurgan tribe and is also an actual surname in modern Turkey) type barbarian warriors fond of horses and goat-herding. They dwell east of the Norse in the "Eastern Steppes" and assembled into nomadic tribes operating under the rulership of "Zars". Basically, Turkic tribesmen crossed with Slavic tribesmen. Much like the Mongols, they are also driven to wage war against the medieval Russian Kislevites (remember the Tatar Yoke?), and there are hints dropped that the Gospodars and Ungols (two major ethnic groups that comprise the modern Kislevite state) are in fact off-shoots of the Kurgans.
