* While Bellatrix Lestrange's skin tone is never mentioned, she fits the "brunette" and "unhealthy" (thanks to her stay in Azkaban) parts of the trope. In the film she's played by Helena Bonham Carter (see above). Actually, this trope is played with quite a bit in Harry Potter, with four inter-related characters having The Look. Harry himself is black-haired, short'n'skinny (at least to begin with), and bespectacled: he hardly looks the part of TheHero. Tom Riddle (AKA Lord Voldemort) starts off having black hair and pale skin, before being changed by evil. Sirius Black has the same dark hair and prison-enhanced paleness as Bellatrix, his cousin. This superficial resemblance points out the initial similarities between Harry and Voldemort, Sirius and Bellatrix, while at the same emphasizing their essential differences and democratizing the PaleSkinnedBrunette look by giving it to the hero, his father figure, the bad guy, and the bad guy's best deputy.

->"Hair black like night, skin white as snow..."\\
-- A trope by TimBurton, starring Helena Bonham Carter.

The PaleSkinnedBrunette is a character not just with black or brown hair and fair skin, but with a downright near deathly pallor, thinness, and hair as black as midnight. This black and white complexion is Chiaroscuro visually contrasting, and interesting to look at; serving as a cue to a high contrast or even duality about the character. And it's dirt common among villains.

The reasoning why goes something like this: black is evil, blond is good (usually); tanned is healthy, pale is sickly. Put them both together and you get the most common villainous complexion. It's enough to suggest TVTropesAdditionalEvilOverlordVows a tanning bed to would-be world conquerors. Who knows? Maybe regular trips to the beach might dissuade the OmnicidalManiac from his schemes?

That said, this is still something of an alignment neutral trope. On the DarkIsNotEvil side of the equation there's the Goth, StrangeGirl, the Trickster and AntiHero. Still, some of the more memorable examples of this trope are the likes of TheVamp, BloodKnight, and WickedWitch. Oddly enough, the Pale Skinned Brunette is hardly ever TheBigGuy or a bruiser, as most villains with this complexion complement it with haggard, sleep deprived eyes and near starved frames. Perhaps to send the message that evil takes a physical as well as moral toll. If they are on the side of good, though, they'll usually be of TheLancer or TheSmartGuy type.

This is somewhat ironic, as OnceUponATime pale skin symbolized wealth and education, as the privileged could afford to work indoors rather than in the fields. (Also it's very easy to tell if a pale person is sick; with a 'healthy tan', one can hide it more easily.) Nowadays this is not uncommon in RealLife.

Note that pale will not always mean pure white; a yellowish (usually referred to as "sallow") tinge is common. In comics or cartoons, a greenish hue is a frequent substitute. Blue, violet or grey pastels will also do in a pinch.

Counterpart to the DarkSkinnedRedhead and the DarkSkinnedBlonde. Very common among vampires. Often, these people Look Like Cesare. Compare TallDarkAndBishoujo and StringyHairedGhostGirl. Also see ButNotTooWhite. Not to be confused with UndeathlyPallor.

* Nozomu Itoshiki from SayonaraZetsubouSensei.
** Well yeah, but he at least has SOME colour to him. Kiri Komori fits this trope pretty much to a T, being a Hikikomori who, by nature, doesn't go outside much.
* FullMetalAlchemist: All the Homunculi are like this, bar Gluttony, who hardly looks human at all, but at least has some color.
** Wrath/Pride is also rather well-tanned, but his body was created to age like a human being, and reacting to natural light might be a side effect.
** Actually makes sense, as the other homonculi would "heal" the tan away.
** Kimblee and Archer as well. Both have black hair and Kimblee, of course, has unhealthy-looking skin because of his prison time. Archer has pure white skin that even the Homunculi cannot compete with. It really stands out.
*** Izumi too, though she has an incurable illness as an excuse.
*** All these characters have a normal skin color in the manga and the new anime adaptation. Except (obviously) Archer, who is an anime-only character.
** Ling Yao and later
* Yuri of the DirtyPair.
* L, Naomi Misora, and Teru Mikami of DeathNote.
* Yuuko Ichihara of XXXHolic. Most color illustrations depict the rest of the main cast as these, too.
** All the main characters have black hair and pasty skin in the manga. Doumeki has much darker skin in the anime, but Watanuki remains very pale.
* Sunako from TheWallflower, as pictured above. The boys in charge of making her into a lady initially mistake her for Sadako thanks to the general aura of creepy she constantly emanates.
* This is one of the indications that the titular character of HellGirl is not of this world.
* Hyatt from ExcelSaga, who is very sickly and usually dies several times per episode.
* Rue of PrincessTutu, playing up the crow imagery around her.
* Kuromitsu, the beautiful, immortal vampire from Kurozuka.
* Though Maki Izumi from MartianSuccessorNadesico technically has blue hair, she's pretty close to this. [[spoiler:The fact that she cracks bad puns all the time is just a cover.]]
* Aiko from MagicalPokaan is another example, again hair that is really (dark)blue instead of brown or black.
* Sawako from KimiNiTodoke, whose creepy looks have had her nicknamed Sadako. She's actually very nice, very naive, and really lonely (since her looks and her (mostly untrue) reputation tends to scare off potential friends).
* Orochimaru of Naruto goes beyond simply having pale skin -- his is flat-out white, paired with black hair. Sai, Itachi and Sasuke are less pale, but they all contrast with Naruto, who is blond-haired and well-tanned. More heroic examples are Hinata and Neji Hyuga. (Well, Neji becomes heroic...esque.)
* Chane and Huey Laforet from Baccano!
* Hotaru Tomoe from SailorMoon qualifies as this, a CreepyChild who has both a planet-destroying senshi spirit and a demon bent on bringing "silence" to the world sealed inside her. Despite all this, when depowered she's just a sweet girl who is misunderstood due to her fainting states and creepy looks.
* Setsuna of MahouSenseiNegima is noted for her pale white skin and raven-black hair which gives her the look of a traditional Japanese woman. Akira and maybe Konoka would also count.
** Setsuna is arguably a subversion, as it's implied later in the manga that she's albino, and dyes her hair so that she can fit in.
* Sae in PeachGirl which she uses against Momo.
* Tomoe in RurouniKenshin. Also Kaoru, though she subverts the trope by being Tsundere more emotional.
* Precia Testarossa of MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha, an EvilMatriarch of a BigBad with an IncurableCoughOfDeath. Chrono is a more heroic example.
* Hanajima Saki from FruitsBasket, complete with creepy Goth tendencies and a decidedly unflattering reputation, despite being quite a nice person at heart. Her younger brother Megumi is one of these too, and he's arguably even creepier than she is. Rin and Akito, both Broken Birds, also fit this trope.
* Maya from BurnUp Scramble, in contrast to Mukokuseki blonde, green-eyed Rio and DarkSkinnedRedhead Lilika. It's hard to be certain of their unnamed boss, as she's never seen in natural light.
* Ohno from Genshiken.
* Momoko of Saki. This, combined with her ~su VerbalTic, her power to invisibility disappear from sight, and the black smoke effect used to portray those powers, makess her seem like a ghost.
* In TheTwelveKingdoms, the local PaleSkinnedBrunette Taiki is one of the kirins, mythological beasts who are supposed to choose the kings and queens of the lands. He's also the only brunette among them, since they're almost all blonde, which makes him a rarity among kirins.
* Re-l Mayer from ErgoProxy, whose pure white skin, pitch black hair and liberal amounts of blue eyeshadow make her rather... striking.
* Fiore from ChronoCrusade, an [[spoiler:undead]] meido who works for the villains.
* Quite a few characters in Bleach qualify; Rukia Kuchiki, Byakuya Kuchiki, Loly, Cirucci Sanderwicci (dark purple hair), but the best example has to be Ulquiorra Cifer, who has deathly-silver skin.
** After becoming a PhysicalGod of sorts, [[spoiler:Ichigo's red hair has become pitch-black]].
* DGrayMan has several heroic examples, namely Kanda, Lenalee, Krory and Miranda.
* Ciel and especially Sebastian in Kuroshitsuji.
* Yuno Morino from Manga/Goth. The contrast of the scars on her wrists atop her pristine white skin is what drew the attention (and obsession) of the NightmareFetishist narrator.
* Lelouch from CodeGeass is this. While not having a deathly pallor, it's obvious that his creator wanted to give him a Dark look, his clothes being either an all-black uniform or a MalevolentMaskedMan with OminousOperaCape (HighCollarOfDoom included). Meanwhile, his Evil Counterparts, Mao And Schneizel are are albino and blond, respectively. And Suzaku is Dark Skinned with Light Brown hair.
* Japan from AxisPowersHetalia. While his skin isn't quite up to 'deathly pallor' levels, he still stands out among the cast for his ShinyMidnightBlack hair, MonochromaticEyes, and white battle uniform that enhances the black-and-white contrast of his hair, eyes, and skin. It's further enhanced by him being known to have Hikikomori shunned sunlight for at least 200 years at one point, tending to hang out with nations who have brighter hair colors and skin tones, and having a generally polite and reserved demeanor that contrasts with the majority of the other characters' demeanors.

* Death and Dream of the Endless in TheSandman, though the former is a much cheerier PerkyGoth to her brother's somber disposition. The Endless can change their appearance; Dream appears African to one of his Girlfriends
** Desire and Despair, too.
* The Bride of Nine Spiders from ImmortalIronFist. Fittingly, her main power is the ability to summon hordes of spiders.
* Cassie Hack from HackSlash.

* SnowWhite: back in the day, unnatural paleness was the epitome of feminine beauty, since tanned skin was associated with commoners who worked outside all day. Hell, dying of tuberculosis was considered to add to women's attractiveness by causing paleness and fainting spells. The paleness=corpse=unnatural association isn't any older than the twentieth century.
* TanithLee played with this by taking the whole "Skin pale as snow, lips as red as blood, hair black as a raven's wing" description and concluding that this meant Snow White and her mother were vampires. So did NeilGaiman.
** Cecelia Eng wrote a Filk almost certainly based on Lee's story:
-->Mirror, mirror, on the wall,\\
Cannot see my face at all;\\
My lips are red as the blood I crave,\\
My hair as black as an empty grave.
* The legend of the Yuki-onna or Snow Lady in Japanese mythos.

* Any film by Tim Burton. It's practically guaranteed to have at least one, and it'll probably be Johnny Depp.
** Tim Burton got the idea from Conrad Veidt.
** Tim's wife Helena Bonham Carter lives, breathes, and just generally embodies this trope.
*** Helena Bonham Carter in a Tim Burton movie = Monkey Suit, not that it makes a difference to Tim.
** Sacrificing the hair, doesn't this technically apply to the Batman Joker?
*** The Penguin counts as this played straight. He's as pale as it gets.
* Violet Parr from The Incredibles; although she's more of a ShrinkingViolet, she definitely fits this description.
* Sadako/Samara from The Ring.
* The entirety of TheAddamsFamily in the films, as a physical sign of their, er, 'difference'.
* The Thermians in GalaxyQuest, done to emphasize that they are aliens who have disguised themselves as humans in accordance with the film's plot.
* Esther Coleman from Orphan.
* In WaltzWithBashir, the director portrays his ex-girlfriend, who dumped him the same week he shipped out, as one of these. He has fantasies of her as a ghostly presence on the battlefield. In an interview, the director stated that his wife objected to how attractive he made her in the film.
* The BBC version of the White Witch is a straight up villainous example.
* Lydia from Beetlejuice, but her hair is dyed, and she's one of the earlier examples of a Goth.

* The White Witch is this trope taken UpToEleven. She has jet-black hair and pure white--yes, LITERALLY white--skin.
* Dragaeras Sethra Lavode. Sure, she's a vampire, but considering that no one noticed for a few thousand years after she died, she must have been pretty pale to start with.
* In Garth Nix's OldKingdom series (Sabriel and sequels), the Abhorsen clan of necromancers are recognizable by their jet black hair and unhealthy pallor, but they're the good guys.
* Lady Myria [=LeJean=] in TerryPratchett's Discworld Thief of Time looks like this, though the "unhealthy" aspect is less significant than the "monochromatic".
** Arguably, Severus Snape fits this trope, too, though he's described as 'sallow' rather than pale. The difference between these two skin tones is negligible in candlelight, which is what wizards go by.
* Most of EdgarAllanPoe's female characters, probably because most of them have TB.
* Phase (Ayla Goodkind) at the SuperHeroSchool Whateley Academy in the WhateleyUniverse. Her hair is jet-black (it was a sandy-blond back when she was a boy, before she mutated). She's quite pale (some wavelength of light may be passing through her). She's also very rich and highly educated, which fits the trope too. But she's one of the good guys. A lot of mutants don't believe that, because her family are the most notorious mutant-haters anywhere.
* RealPersonFic versions of [[TheBeatles Paul [=McCartney=]]] often fall under this trope.
* Tom Flood from BloodsuckingFiends. Incidentally, the freckled redhead is an actual vampire
* TheWheelOfTimes Lanfear, disguised as the breathtakingly hot Selene (though her genuine appearance is not very different), is one of these. No one (except the entire readership) realized she was evil at first, though.
* The Crown of Thorns from The Lonely Winds is a pretty formulaic example of this trope.
* Bella Swan of Twilight believes that she's not pretty because she falls under this trope.
** Alice Cullen and many other dark-haired vampires fall under this trope as well, having skin so pale, it's completely white and ice cold. They also sparkle in daylight.
* Shattered Mirror featured vampiric twins, Kristopher and Nikolaus, who were both deathly pale with dark hair (and black eyes to boot). One of the twins used this black-and-white theme for all the decor in his house and his clothing.
* Louis de Pointe du Lac from the VampireChronicles.
* The original PaleSkinnedBrunette vampire, however, is Dracula, with permission from Lord Ruthven.
* Jon Snow from ASongOfIceAndFire. Ironically, he's one of the most noble and heroic characters in the series.
* ArtemisFowl is described as dark haired and pale, from the hours spent in front of a computer screen. In the most recent novels he's been getting a little better about going outside, but not by much.
* Claggart in Billy Budd is described having pallid skin and "silken jet curls". He's also tall, thin, and has violet eyes. Violet. Wonder why he's evil.
* Johnny Coughlan from The Johnny Coffin Diaries. He lies that his nickname is because he sleeps in a coffin.
* Used in Rebecca, in which the titular character is often described as being incredibly beautiful with pale skin and dark hair.
* Gregor Vorbarra from the VorkosiganSaga is described as being like this - as well as being tall and thin and dressing in dark clothing - so it shouldn't be surprising that he's TheEmperor of a multi-planetary, extremely militaristic empire. Except that he's also one of the good guys.
** Most of Miles Vorkosigan's love interests fit this trope too, especially Elena and Elli.
* House Raith of the White Court in the DresdenFiles - a clan of psychic vampires that feed on lust, and they all look like this.
* Juliet Salazar from Mike Carey's FelixCastor series, who has black hair, "black-on-black" eyes, and pure white skin: "the undiluted white of snow or bone rather than the muddy pink-beige mix that passes for white according to normal labelling conventions." Justified in her case, as she's a demon from Hell whose body isn't, technically speaking, an actual body. And in something of a subversion, she's not necessarily an evil demon from Hell. When she chooses not to be.
* Tsundere Heleth from Douglas Hill's [=ColSec=] Trilogy is a PaleSkinnedBrunette with facial tattoos. Justified in that she was raised underground (the tattoos help camouflage her in shadows). And she sunburns badly.
* Definitely on the DarkIsNotEvil side of this trope: Stephen Maturin, co-protagonist of the Aubrey-Maturin series. His hair is black, of course, and his skin tone is almost invariably described as "pale" or "sallow".
* Xanatos, ManipulativeBastard and BigBad of the JediApprentice novels in the StarWars EU, is more or less described as looking like a vampire.
* Magiere from TheSagaOfTheNobleDead straddles the line between this and UndeathlyPallor. At her most normal she has a chalk-white complexion (impossible given the amount of time she spends outdoors) and blood red highlights in her otherwise black hair (when her SuperpoweredEvilSide comes out, so do the fangs). Oddly enough, she had a rough childhood and developed a thing about superstitious peasantry.

Morticia Addams fits the physical description, but is a very nice person. She just has some unusual hobbies and a slightly odd outlook on life. Same thing with her husband and daughter.
* Lily Munster of TheMunsters also looks like this and would probably get along very well with Morticia if they met.
* In season 2 of Dexter, Dexter's girlfriend Lila is a pale-skinned brunette, leading Deb to speculate that she's "a pasty English vampire".
* Lt. Cmdr. Data in StarTrekTheNextGeneration was designed to be this on purpose to keep him on the left side of the UncannyValley. Amusingly, some aliens think he's just a weird-looking human. In homage to Kirk's "rice-picker" in The Original Series and Blatant Lie regarding Spock in StarTrekIVTheVoyageHome, they tell some past humans in "Time's Arrow" that he's "South American".
** In at least one holodeck episode, he passes himself off as an albino human.
** Spock and most Vulcans (barring Tuvok) in general fit this trope.
** Also, Deanna Troi.
* River Tam of Firefly. Kinda justified on the pale-skinned part, as she doesn't leave the ship much.
* Willow in BuffyTheVampireSlayer at the end of season 6. Justified in that
* WWE Superstar Mark Calaway aka The Undertaker (although his natural hair color is actually red), as well as his manager Paul Bearer. Even after Taker changed his gimmick to a BadassBiker, he's still noticeably pale.
* Bad girl Audrey Horne in TwinPeaks.
* A benign version is Marian from the BBC's Series/RobinHood, played by dark-haried, pale-skinned Lucy Griffith.
* By an act of divine fortune (for those who like women, anyway), Zoe Graystone from Caprica has very dark (nearly-black) hair and very light (as close to white as possible without albinism) skin. Particularly noticeable in the ads, in which she is stark-naked, looking over her shoulder, and holding a bright-red apple.
* Goth lab rat Abby from NCIS. Although Pauley Perrette's hair is naturally blonde, so one could assume that Abby probably dyes her hair too.
* Emily Prentiss from Criminal Minds.

* Due to flaws in various implants, all Raven Guards have dark hair and pale skin, regardless of what they looked like pre-surgery.
* Dark Elves in WarhammerFantasy are almost all pale and black-haired, though no actual reason is given. Perhaps that was just a major dominant trait among the Nagarytheans.
* Moon elves, or Silver elves, in ForgottenRealms usually have black to blue hair and pale to icy-blue skin. At least one novel even lampshaded that the subrace visually is a Foil perfect contrast to DarkSkinnedBlond drow. They look weirdest of whole elvenkind (except Avariel), but tend to be the most human-like mentally (approachable, curious and active) and the least decadent.

* In TheMusical version of Wicked, Nessarose is always one of these, no matter the actress; it makes sense, considering that she's fairly sickly, and being crippled is confined to bed, and also sees the world in terms of black and white. Later, when she turns evil, she also exchanges her blue-and-white outfit for a black one.

* Bastila from Star Wars: KnightsOfTheOldRepublic.
** Likewise, Miranda Lawson from Mass Effect 2, another Bioware game.
* Soren from FireEmblem 9 and 10. He's one of the protagonists, but his cynicism and utter lack of idealism occasionally puts off his allies.
** Noticeably, Karla of FireEmblem 7 is the only (female) ally with black hair in the entire game. Mind, this is a series with a tradition of having at least thirty-odd characters on the allies' side alone, and they are all very pale. Upon supporting, her personality is revealed to be an equal mix of CloudCuckooLander and LadyOfWar. Strangely for female characters in this trope, she is an undefeated fighter known as the Princess of Swords as wel as TheRival to Bartre the Fighter, and there are absolutely no allusions to her being sickly or weak In the previous game, her daughter Fir continues the trait of having dark hair along with a few others--though, for some strange reason Fir's hair is purple.
** [=FE7=]'s Morphs, artificial humans made by the Big Bad also fall under this.
* Viola Cadaverini from the AceAttorney series. She's meant to be creepy and sickly looking, and it works.
** Sort-of subverted by Maya in the first game: throughout the second case, she seems like a less-creepy version of this trope, but once she's cleared of suspicion, she becomes the game's GenkiGirl Sidekick.
* Higashizawa Youdai of TheWorldEndsWithYou is, considering the rarity of even Big Guys crossing over with this trope, most likely the only Brute example of a Pale-Skinned Brunette in existence.
* F.E.A.R.'s Alma is a straight example of this, as well as being a StringyHairedGhostGirl.
* The Suikoden series has a rather memorable example in the fifth numbered sequel. Zerase is altogether too happy to deride the hero for his quote-unquote "idiocy" while deliberately withholding useful information. For extra tropaliciousness, her pale skin is even commented on in a hidden FuroScene, which implies that she .
* FinalFantasyVII's Vincent Valentine fits this trope quite well, although more in the AntiHero sense. This doesn't stop people from thinking of him as TheVamp, though....
* Ashei from TheLegendOfZelda: TwilightPrincess fits this trope physically, with her ShinyMidnightBlack braided hair and almost paper-white skin (complete with under-eye dark circles). She's one of the good guys, however.
* The evil, Split Personality schizophrenic and The Scrappy annoying Tira in Soul Series Soul Calibur IV.
* Bayonetta. That is all.
* [=~Yo-Jin-Bo~=]'s Bo has dark navy blue hair and the palest skintone in the game besides Hatsuhime.
* Eleanor from BioShock 2. Living in an underwater city will probably do that to one's complexion.

* Riley from TheGuild, except for the sickly part.
* Being the pasty geeks that they are, there's a lot of these in the ThatGuyWithTheGlasses crew. Benzaie, Spoony and TheNostalgiaCritic, in particular.

* Nearly all humanoid Disney villains ever, starting with Snow White's wicked stepmother and going on. Sometimes the skin is greenish or yellowish-tinged (Maleficent from Disney/SleepingBeauty), but this can be seen as an over-the-top graphic representation of cool or sallow tones in pale skin.
** Also Mozenrath from the Aladdin TV series - much paler even than usual Disney villains, almost white.
** SnowWhite, as noted earlier, is a rare heroine example.
** Vanessa, in The Little Mermaid, certainly qualifies.
* Mai and Jun of AvatarTheLastAirbender. Not to mention Zuko, arguably the palest character on the show.
** Toph Bei Fong, the palest character who has black black hair
* Kevin from Ben 10 starts out this way, and is quite psychotic. When he joins the team in the sequel, his skin tone is almost the same as the Tennysons.
* Sam of DannyPhantom falls under the standard pale-skinned, raven-haired goth complexion.
* Kylie Griffin, the Goth member of the ExtremeGhostbusters.
* Ingrid Third of Fillmore
* Triana Orpheus of VentureBrothers, a bit of a PerkyGoth subversion.
* Shego from KimPossible was designed with this in mind. Her green highlights make her seem poisonous. Oddly, (given the suggestion above) she's often seen on a beach, or a tanning bed, with no apparent effects; maybe she wants to differentiate herself from her heroic brothers who follow a similar scheme.
* Creepy Suzie, the Goth "Clubhouse Kid" from TheOblongs.
* Dib, the HeroAntagonist from InvaderZim, has pale skin and black hair. His scary sister Gaz might play this more straight, but her hair is dark purple.
* Raven from TeenTitans.
* Rogue, who's a bit of a goth, in XMenEvolution X-Men: Evolution.

** Of course, this is a well-established secondary stereotype, particularly in the United Kingdom (where red hair is also associated with the Scots), known as "Black Irish".

* Subverted by Eva Green, who appears to fit this trope, but is actually a natural blonde.
* ParkerPosey.
* AmandaPalmer.
* Kat Dennings.
* Katy Perry.

* Gemma Arterton, mmm.

* Marissa Nadler.
* BebeNeuwirth is so famously this that not only did she play Lilith Sternin on Cheers (and later Frasier), who is constantly having jokes made about her pale skin, but she is now headlining The Addams Family Musical on Broadway as Morticia Addams.
* Porn actress Stoya.
* Tarja Turunen (former lead singer of Nightwish. Also Anette Olzon, the current lead singer of Nightwish.
