In the original novel, they didn't have an excess special effects budget to be showing off, so they just set them on the banisters by the stairs, to exactly the same effect. At least that's only mildly stupid.

* ''VideoGame/{{Penumbra}}'', made by the same developer as ''Amnesia'', also uses this mechanic. You can find packets of beef jerky and toss them at the various zombified dogs ''before'' they see you, allowing you to either kill them in a SneakAttack, or simply run away while they're distracted.
