* VideoGame/AssassinsCreedOrigins with its open world set in Ancient Egypt features dust storms that randomly occur while the player is out in the desert. While it causes no damage to the player, it does significantly reduce visibility (which can help or hurt, as enemies can't see you very well either).

* Sand King in VideoGame/Dota 2 can create a sand storm that sets himself invisible and damaging anyone that comes within the storm. The storm persists as long as Sand King stays in place, which can be very long.

* Sand King in VideoGame/Dota 2 can create 2}}: Sand King's ability "Sand Storm" creates a moderately large cloud of whirling sand storm that sets himself invisible and hides him while damaging anyone any enemies that comes stand within the storm. The storm persists as long as Over many updates, it changed from needing Sand King stays in place, which can be to actively channel the storm, unable to do anything else without stopping the effect, through being able move and attack within a static zone with effect ending when he leaves its borders, to today's state of Sand Storm being able to very long.slowly follow after Sand King.

* VideoGame/GoldenSun1: The Suhalla desert is uncrossable due to massive sandstorms kicked up by giant lizard monsters. Your party (and the enemies you're chasing) can get past them by getting caught in the tornado and casting Douse, which forces the lizard to fight. The Muggle Non Player Characters, however, have to bring big barrels of water with them, in addition to being entirely unsuited for fighting giant monsters.

* VideoGame/MetalGearSolidVThePhantomPain has sandstorms roll in at irregular intervals in northern Kabul, Afghanistan. The sandstorms cut down visibility sharply for everyone (Grade 4 or above NVG negates it completely though, fortunately) but makes it a lot harder for the Soviets to hear Venom Snake sneaking up on them. The Support Unit can also cause sandstorms (even in Africa!) for 33,000 GMP and last a lot lot longer than normal sandstorms, aiding stealth operations tremendously, though it negates S-ranking for main missions however.

* VideoGame/TotalWarWarhammerII: Sand storms are one of many types of attrition that can trouble armies on the campaign map, killing models in squads and hurting the health of single-models such as heroes or monsters. They may naturally occur in deserts, while factions of the Tomb Kings may summon sand storms (while gaining immunity to sand storm type of attrition, otherwise it would be a massive case of BlessedWithSuck) with one of the Black Books of Nagash (activates after destroying or taking over a city, sand storms cover a province that city belongs to) or through one of their rites (affects all the regions under control of the faction).

* In Dune: Part One, Paul Atreides and his mother Jessica escape their Harkonnen pursuers on Arrakis/Dune by navigating through a sand storm. In Film/DunePartTwo, there's a perpetual sand storm making it difficult to reach the southern hemisphere of Arrakis and because of this the Harkonnens think it's uninhabitable, while the majority of the Fremen actually live there. The Fremen ride sand worms to cross the storm.

* One of the concerns for any colonization effort on Mars is the planet's tendency to have truly enormous dust storms, some of which can engulf the entire planet for months at a time. Unlike what is depicted in Film/TheMartian, however, the dust storms themselves are not deadly: Mars doesn't have enough of an atmosphere to let even a high speed dust storm cause any significant damageAndy Weir has specifically said that he was aware of this while writing the book, but exaggerated things for dramatic effect. The danger of a dust storm on Mars is that the best (read: lightest and cheapest) way to generate power on Mars is through solar energy, and dust storms rapidly degrade solar panel efficiency to the point of uselessness.

The danger of a dust storm on Mars is that the best (read: lightest and cheapest) way to generate power on Mars is through solar energy, and dust storms rapidly degrade solar panel efficiency to the point of uselessness. This probably won’t be too big of an issue once there’s humans on Mars who can clean off the panels, but until then, quite a few landers and rovers have met the end of their mission by being covered in dust and running out of energy to power their instruments.
