* Despite WCW's (which stood for World Championship Wrestling, remember) brief stay as the top promotion in the U.S. on the back of the Wrestling/NewWorldOrder the company never really gained much traction anywhere else, save for Japan thanks to the working agreement with Wrestling/NewJapanProWrestling. This includes Canada, where neither Creator/TBS nor Creator/TNT was available, meaning the only way to see WCW Monday Nitro and WCW Thunder live was to get a C-band satellite dish. As such Canada doesn't really have the nostalgia for WCW and the nWo that their neighbors to the south have. Even in its heyday WCW had trouble in certain markets inside the U.S., the WWF was still for the most part outdrawing WCW in their core northeast markets and WCW never drew well on the west coast. Basically the gates would get progressively smaller the further they got from Atlanta. Which actually makes sense when WCW really was just a southern regional promotion owned by a national TV network.

* The Arabic animated series, Block 13 is often considered legendary in its native Kuwait with it getting constant merchandise, reruns on other networks, and even a spin-off. However, in English-speaking countries it manages to be both this and GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff, as due to its striking resemblance to WesternAnimation/SouthPark (as the series is an adaptation of said series), it's received a split reception (especially from people who are fans of South Park). One side absolutely despises the series with it gaining a PeripheryHatedom as a result with people calling it a rip-off of South Park. However, the other side accepted its similarites and enjoyed it.

** [[spoiler: Maki is starting to skirt this territory. A lot of people are starting to dislike her due to two other fan favorites, Kaito and Kokichi, dying because of her, and would rather have those two alive than her in addition to Kokichi believing that she ended up giving the suicidal Ryoma his empty video when he wanted to find a reason to live, more or less with the intention of him committing suicide because he knew her secret. Others enjoy her character arc as well as her interesting talent, backstory and moral ambiguity as the Ultimate Assassin. They also believe that Maki didn't really actually watch his video and Kokichi's belief that she did watch Ryoma's video and gave it to him stems from his dislike towards killers. There are also several people who take issue with how her character arc revolves mostly around her relationship with Kaito.]]
** [[spoiler: Her attempted murder of Kokichi seems to be the most divisive subject when it comes to her. Some fans believe that it was inexcusable given how everybody didn't want her to kill Kokichi and that he seemed to have a genuine confused reaction when Maki told him about him being a Remnant of Despair hinting that everything is not what it seems. Others believe that Kokichi stated that he was the mastermind and him being confused when Maki was talking about him being a Remnant of Despair is not going to stop Maki from thinking that he was the mastermind. Though even those who find Maki's murder attempt inexcusable believe that she was supposed to learn a lesson after Kaito ended up TakingTheBullet for Kokichi and was supposed to make a HeelFaceTurn. However, some fans believe that lesson came across as a little too late as it ended up right at the end of the game and we couldn't see if she will actually go through a HeelFaceTurn. To make matters worse she wanted to kill everybody in the fifth trial so she could survive since she thought she was the blackened, and she made no secret about how she liked the fact this would also kill Kokichi for her despite condemning her so called "friends" like Shuichi to die, and then have her be portrayed as EasilyForgiven can rub a lot of players the wrong way.]] And there have been accusations of Kodaka showing favoritism towards Maki. The RomanticPlotTumor between Maki and Kaito can be viewed as Kodaka having a Pet OTP. While Deuteragonist Kaito and Kokichi each represent major themes in this game such as belief and lies, and those two boys along with Shuichi can be viewed as a FreudianTrio, Maki doesn't really fit the themes of the game as much as those two. In addition to Maki being viewed as EasilyForgiven after she attempted to kill everybody, and as well as Kodaka stating a comment about him being surprised over Maki being 9th place in the official popularity polls, some fans lead to the conclusion that Maki was given too much favoritism from Kodaka.

* Doogal is probably one of the most notorious examples of this in animated film history. Based on the British-French stop-motion children's show from the '60s, the CGI film was originally released in Europe in 2005. Even though the original series and franchise is practically unknown outside of its native France, Harvey Weinstein himself after watching the original film decided to release the film in America in 2006. This was done by recasting all but two of the original British cast with well-known American stars, rewriting the film by inserting pop culture and fart jokes, reediting the film to accommodate all the script changes and advertising the film as being "created" by cartoonist Creator/ButchHartman. The results turned Doogal into a critical and commercial flop in the United States, continuing to baffle and intrigue film enthusiasts and critics to this day.

* Franchise/MyLittlePony hasn't been able to make a dent in Japan as it has in other countries. Japan has its own supply of home-grown girl's series such as Jewelpets and Hello Kitty that make it hard for international lines to become successful in Japan. Japan has had Japanese-geared G1 toys but they didn't help much, which may explain why Friendship is Magic never caught on in the region.

* WebAnimation/RWBY: The animesque web-cartoon was initially well-received in Japan, however, Volume 4 was poorly received by Japanese fans. The GenreShift away from high school anime cliches and the overall darker tone caused the series to lose many fans. While the shift is base-breaking internationally, the reception was more mixed compared to Japan's largely negative one.

Widget Series is no longer a page. The replacement, Quirky Work, doesn't have the same emphasis on cultural differences leading to apparent weirdness, so is less relevant to this trope.

The most common reason for this is ValuesDissonance, as things that seem normal or relatable in one culture can be seen as offensive, baffling, or just plain stupid in another. Or they violate some cultural taboo. Aesthetic dissonance can also be at play, i.e. different cultures have their own standards of cuteness and attractiveness. Another reason for it can be that a character is supposed to represent the nation that hates them, and this character is seen as offensively stereotypical. In the worst cases, the hatedom of a single character can result in NoExportForYou for an entire series (something some people are probably going to be grateful for).

Most tend to blame the aforementioned Franchise/Barbie, and more specifically her more mature proportions and nature appealing more to American girls, as the reason for Licca-chans stateside obscurity.

This was done by recasting all but two of the original British cast with well-known American stars, rewriting the film by inserting pop culture and fart jokes and reediting the film to accommodate all the script changes. The results turned Doogal into a critical and commercial flop in the United States, continuing to baffle and intrigue film enthusiasts and critics to this day.

* While Malaysian animated series Animation/UpinAndIpin is successful in its home country and neighboring Indonesia, it is widely hated outside those countries. Moreover, this show is tailored towards the Malay Muslim rural community, so most non-Muslims out there might not get it and see it as a dumb, unentertaining show. And because this show was aired in the Asian feed of Disney Channel, Singaporeans, Thais, Filipinos, and Vietnamese have to suffer with it all the same.

Moreover, Part of the reason why is because this show is tailored towards the Malay Muslim rural community, community (Indonesia meanwhile has a majority Muslim population hence why most people can see its appeal), so most non-Muslims out there might not get it and see it as a dumb, unentertaining show. And because this show was aired in the Asian feed of Disney Channel, Singaporeans, Thais, Filipinos, and Vietnamese have had to suffer with it all the same.

* Wrestling/Goldberg is also hated in Canada thanks to ending Wrestling/BretHart's career with an errant kick.

* Wrestling/Goldberg is also hated in Canada thanks to ending Wrestling/BretHart's career with an errant kick. Although this does seem to be changing as Survivor Series 2016 and [=SummerSlam=] 2019 both took place in Toronto, and he got good reactions there (although the former was bolstered more by how he squashed Wrestling/BrockLesnar).
