the AK's legendary reputation is actually totally bullshit. THE AK 47 was so bad that it was immediately redesigned entirely (into what Russians call simply the AK), and even then the AK and its derivatives, the AKM, 74, etc are infamous for failing to live up to their reputations as "give it to a child in Africa after termites have eaten away the wood in a soviet stockpile for three decades and it will work flawlessly" invulnerable guns. Generally, reliable models are ones made by people who weren't expected to fill quotas or be sent to a gulag, and who had access to the right materials and machinery to make them. The T-34 has similar problems: the design is reliable in theory, but, when made by Russia in a War economy where quantity was decided to be more important, they're grossly inferior to what they should be on paper. The gearbox was so bad that trying to shift into top gear would snap the transmission, and trying to shift into the gear below it required a hammer, which is why T-34 crews would carry a complete transmission as a spare on the back of the tank. Almost no T-34s from WWII actually exist to this day, with almost all the supposedly "war made" T-34s actually being post-WWII models at minimum, which had numerous upgrades and (unlike the WWII built ones) had all the parts that were listed in the design (half of all T-34s were made by one factory that started cutting corners by removing critical components, like the seats, the lights, the hatch seals, etc). And even those are largely propaganda pieces, painstakingly cared for to a degree that would bankrupt most museums, solely so that Russia can continue to spread the myth of the T-34's "superiority".

* The AK-47 is [[MemeticMutation memetically tough]]. In fact, all its good points are due to one aspect; its simplicity. Because it's simple, easy to take apart and clean (if you ever need to anyways) and has large tolerances, nearly any damage it takes is remarkably simple to fix. You could bury one in mud and leave it there for weeks - maybe even ''years'' - then come back and dig it up, and with just a little cleaning it'll be firing like new.

Even then, the much-lauded ability to anyways) and has large tolerances, nearly any damage "immerse it takes is remarkably simple to fix. * The Russian counterpart of the American M4 Sherman, the T-34 tank. One was used by fleeing Nazis and driven into an Estonian bog, then abandoned. Discovered decades later and found with no corrosion, no leaks, and with a little bit of work (and mopping up the inside), it started. Unfortunately, [[MadeOfExplodium the ammunition they carried was a different story altogether]].

* Chrysler's luxury Imperial marque in TheSixties built cars bordering on this. They wound up being used to win so many demolition derbies that they were eventually banned from competition. Likewise, Chevrolets (the '57 models in particular) were known for their extreme durability. Many of those are still in pristine condition today, after over fifty years. The old land arks of TheSixties and TheSeventies had the misfortune to be significantly more durable than the fleshy meatbags driving them. This often led to cars that were perfectly drivable after fatal crashes... crashes that killed the occupants precisely ''because'' the car's durability led to brutal whiplash upon impact. The invention of crumple zones made cars much more prone to being totaled in crashes but actually kept the passengers alive.

It was built in such a way that the plastic quickly wore itself down from the rotation (the original ''VideoGame/MarioParty1'' being a frequent offender), resulting in a loose stick with extreme center play. It's also possible after the stick is sufficiently worn out for it to be accidentally pushed down into the controller, where it gets stuck and can no longer be used at all. On the other hand, it uses optical encoders instead of potentiometers like later Nintendo controllers, which are significantly more durable and precise due to their contactless nature. It's a shame that the mechanical gimbal and pivot assembly can't hold up compared to the sensors.

The joint just below the R button can weaken and snap very easily, leaving a broken R button (which most games use as a major button) or a free swinging topscreen. ** A couple pair of LetsPlay people [[ElementalRockPaperScissors Website/SomethingAwful users [[https://lparchive.org/Pokemon-Blue/Science/ decided to test]][[labelnote:*]]To explain, the test]][[note]]Using methods of damaging the cartridge correspond corresponding to several of the [[ElementalRockPaperScissors elemental types of ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}''. The process is [[http://lparchive.org/Pokemon-Blue/Science/ detailed on this page]][[/labelnote]] ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}''.[[note]] whether the old Game Boy cartridges live up to the reputation.reputation, using a spare ''[[VideoGame/PokemonRedAndBlue Pokémon Red]]'' cartridge. Throwing and hitting it didn't even leave a mark. Dirt jammed into it while it's in the Game Boy? No problem. Covering the contacts in alcohol and running magnets over it? Didn't bother it. Dunking it in water finally made it fail to start. So they dried it out by ''burning the cartridge for several minutes'' burning a hole through into it in the cartridge''. ''They BURNED the electronics inside the cartridge''.process. Also failed to start. So they waited an hour and came back to it. Presumably, the Nintendium just laughed at them as it started right up. The most fitting part? The cartridge was of ''[[VideoGame/PokemonRedAndBlue Pokémon Red]]''.up, none the worse for wear.

In 2014, Microsoft excavated the legendary ''VideoGame/ETTheExtraterrestrial'' cartridges ''crushed'' then buried in the New Mexico desert back in 1983 for the documentary ''Atari: Game Over''. They still play.

** [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/indestructible-nokia-3310 Nokia 3310]] model cell phone. It might be your ChildhoodFriend for TheNineties kids, but this phone takes beating, getting wet, ''can be used as ice hockey puck'' and the damn thing still works. It also can be put through a washing machine without any damage at all. If you were to drop it in the sea, you could take the battery and SIM card out and leave them in the airing cupboard overnight, and they'll all work just fine the morning after. A common joke in the early-2010s, at the height of the memes surrounding it's reputation for being indestructible, was that the 3310 could only be destroyed in the fires of Mordor.

* Most Soviet cars have a reputation of being an odd overlap of this and TheAllegedCar. They’re slow, ugly, and about as luxurious as a gulag, but in particular the Lada Riva is a car famed for being able to be repaired without even proper tools and famously the bodywork won’t even dent if it’s hit with a hammer.

* The [[CoolGuns/AssaultRifles AK-47]] is [[MemeticMutation memetically tough]].
