Throughout the story, the narrator explains the hardships the survivors must endure in the post-apocalyptic world. These include searching for food and water, being attacked by wild animals such as feral dogs or bears, and, most dangerous of all, surviving against ''them''.
Who or what are ''they''? Why are they so determined to hunt down the narrator and his (or her) group? One thing is for certain, whatever ''they'' are, they're certainly more familiar than we could ever imagine.
