* HangingAround: Katniss recalls a somber folk song her father used to sing called "The Hanging Tree" in which a hanged murderer calls out to his loved one to either flee or join him, depending on your interpretation. [[note]]Later became an actual song due to TheFilmOfTheBook, Film/TheHungerGamesMockingjay, and the song's [[LyricalDissonance dance remix]] charted on the Billboard Hot 100, hitting number one on several charts outside of the US.[[/note]]

* HollywoodTactics: All over the place, and frequently invoked because the main characters are usually supposed to be making propaganda instead of actually fighting. Beetee was even told to design Katniss a weapon based entirely on looks, despite having access to perfectly practical weapons, because she wasn't supposed to be involved in real combat. The squad she is in is not a combat squad, but a propaganda unit making staged videos. At one point, Katniss is confused who gives the orders, the military man Boggs or the video director Cressida, only for it to become immediately clear that Cressida did call the shots.

* LateArrivalSpoiler: Exaggerated the back/dust-jacket synopsis will immediately clue you in on the fact that District 13 actually still exists.

* AchillesinHisTent: Katniss spends the first few chapters of the book refusing to take on the mantle of the Mockingjay despite the full fledged war going on thanks to a mixture of trauma from the Hunger Games, grief over losing her home, and anger over the decision to leave Peeta behind to be captured. Seeing Peeta in a Capitol broadcast awakens her desire for revenge against Snow and fears that he will be executed by the rebels if they win, spurring her participate in Propos of her own.

** Implied to have been done [[spoiler: to Prim and the other medics in order to eliminate Katniss as a political threat]].
** Possibly done to [[spoiler: Boggs and the rest of the Star Squad in the lead up to the traps that got most of them killed. While Boggs does trip the first mine on accident, the ensuing traps and the capital alert to their location may have been tipped off in hindsight by Coin who either way managed to exploit it to her advantage on TV.

** Johanna, who had been denied clearance to participate in the siege of the Capital, forces Katniss to swear ''on her family's life'' (knowing that Katniss does not value her own that much) that she will kill Snow. [[spoiler: Prim is killed at the tail end of her sister's failed assassination mission, just in time for Katniss to watch. After Katniss fails to execute Snow (aiming instead for Coin out of revenge for her role in her sister's death), Katniss's mother leaves to spend the rest of her days mourning in a different district while Katniss is soft-exiled to 12, leaving Katniss alone.]]
