* GambitPileup: And how! The back half of the book is a massive case of this and it takes some time even after reading to unravel things. Where to begin?
** President Snow sends (what is implied to be rigged to ensure the most rebellious/powerful) Victors back into the arena in hopes of killing [[IconofRebellion Katniss, Peeta and most of the others]], perhaps on the side hoping Katniss will betray a few, thus stamping out LaResistance. He orders Plutarch, the Head Gamemaker, to finalize plans for a particularly deadly arena.
** Katniss and Peeta [[HeroicSacrifice both vow to save one another at their own expense]], and each try to enlist Haymitch to support them.
** In the arena the pair end up [[InevitableMutualBetrayal in an alliance of convenience with several other tributes]] in [[EnemyMine order to defeat the Careers]]. The two plan to desert their allies before they can be stabbed in the back which would likely play into Snow's hands.
** First, however, [[UnspokenPlanGuarantee Beetee proposes in detail an ambitious plan to electrocute the water by taking advantage of the arena's gimmicks]]. He and the others split Katniss and Peeta up with a just barely passable excuse, ordering Katniss and Johanna to unspool the wire down to the water.
** Unexpectedly, the wire gets cut - [[OutGambitted the Careers turned out to have a plan of their own]], playing proactively despite being outnumbered. They then try to ambush their isolated opponents to defeat them in detail.
** [[KansasCityShuffle It turns out that Beetee was trying to abuse the stadium to his advantage, but not to fry the water. Instead his real goal is to destroy the arena itself]]. Unfortunately for one reason or another [[SpannerInTheWorks he ends up electrocuting himself by accident before he could finish the job]].
** [[XanatosSpeedChess Katniss ultimately manages to rapidly deduce Beetee's real plan and carry it out with some modifications]], only to learn that all of this was orchestrated to rescue Katniss by Haymitch, Plutarch, and the other Victors in conjunction with [[spoiler: [[OutsideContextProblem District 13]] to start a revolution]].
** [[LastPlanStanding Ultimately Snow, Peeta, Katniss, and the Careers fail in their objectives]], while TheConspiracy prevails.

** During the 75th Hunger Games, Katniss and her allies receive twenty-four District 3-style bite-size rolls as sponsor gifts. [[spoiler:She only learns later that the bread was a coded message indicating the time of their rescue from the arena: the District 3 bread meant the rescue would be on the third day, while the number of rolls meant it would be by the 24th hour.]]

* BreadOfSurvival:
** Katniss encounters two escapees from District 8, Twill and Bonnie, who are trying to make it to District 13 and are in rough shape, not knowing much about wilderness survival. She gives them two cheese buns she has in her bag, along with some grain and dried beans.
--->Bonnie holds the bun as if she can't quite believe it's real and then sinks her teeth into it again and again, unable to stop. "It's better if you chew it." She nods, trying to slow down, but I know how hard it is when you're that hollow.

* TheVillainKnowsMoment: President Snow visits Katniss at her home to warn her that [[spoiler:her and Peeta's action of threatening to commit mutual suicide rather than be forced to kill each at the end of the 74th Hunger Games]] is inspiring an uprising among the oppressed districts. He reveals that he knows about her hunting in the woods with Gale, which is illegal, and the only reason he doesn't execute her is because it would make the districts even more angry (Gale has no such protection, however). He uses this information to threaten her that while she's on the Victory Tour, she better act like she's nothing but a silly, lovestruck girl and no IconOfRebellion. His last words to her before he leaves the house are "By the way, I know about the kiss," revealing that [[ParanoiaFuel he also knows about the time when Gale kissed her when they were alone]].

* WickedWastefulness: Katniss and Peeta are able to fully appreciate the decadence of Panem during the Victory Parade dinner in the Capitol, when they see people drinking emetics to eat more food. It's the sole instance of Peeta [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness losing his calm]]: he flatly tells Katniss that maybe [[PacifismBreakingPoint they shouldn't calm the crowds down across Panem]].
-->All I can think of is the emaciated bodies of the children on our kitchen table as my mother prescribes what the parents can't give. More food. Now that we're rich, she'll send some home with them. But often in the old days, there was nothing to give and the child was past saving, anyway. And here in the Capitol they're vomiting for the pleasure of filling their bellies again and again. Not from some illness of body or mind, not from spoiled food. It's what everyone does at a party. Expected. Part of the fun.

* SecondChapterCliffhanger: The first novel ends on a mildly happy note. Although [[TheHeroine Katniss]]'s PTSD might come back to haunt her later, we're still assured that she manages to survive the game. Then comes the second book, which ends with the destruction of her district, the death of her best friend, and the abduction of her LoveInterest, which is an obvious bridging gap for the final book and is definitely not self-contained (or happy).

* InnocentCohabitation: Peeta sleeps in Katniss' bed through most of the victory tour but they never so much as kiss while under the sheets. When they arrive in the Capitol for the Quarter Quell they also room together, Katniss even refusing to let him return to his actual room to shower because she worries he won't be allowed to come back to her.
