* HesitationEqualsDishonesty: Inverted, mostly. A good rule of thumb in this series is the more straightforward someone seems to be, the bigger the lie they're concealing. Nadeko is hesitant and lacks self-confidence, and her "big secret" is that she likes Araragi (secret only to [[IdiotBall Araragi, really]]); on the other hand, Suruga is quite forthright with her [[GirlsLove sexuality]] but not so much [[spoiler:with her violent hatred towards Araragi for "stealing" Senjogahara from her.]] As it turns out, her [[GirlOnGirlIsHot provocative]] teasing of Araragi is probably [[spoiler:a ploy to get Araragi to forget about Senjogahara, even if that means potentially having to seduce him]].

* SceneryPorn: YEP! You got it! It is made by Shaft after all. It is of note that combined with [[CameraScrew screwy camera angles]], the series uses scenery shots to great theatrical effect along with a ton of unusually schizophrenic shifts between locations, bizarre color hues, and a lot of settings in disarray to invoke a feeling of SurrealHorror.

** This is less GratuitousEnglish and more SurprisinglyGoodEnglish, since the line is delivered with little trace of an accent.

A manga adaptation of the series began in 2018, illustrated by Creator/OhGreat (of ''Manga/AirGear'' and ''Manga/TenjouTenge'' fame) as well as a 2017 crossover gag series with ''Literature/PrettyBoyDetectiveClub'' and ''Literature/{{Zaregoto}}''.

As for English releases, Creator/AniplexUSA released the first season of the anime in North America in November 2012 and ''Nisemonogatari'' in February 2013. They released ''Monogatari Series Second Season'', ''Nekomonogatari (Black)'', ''Hanamonogatari'', ''Tsukimonogatari'' and ''Owarimonogatari''. Meanwhile, Vertical began releasing the novels in English with ''Kizumonogatari'' in December 2015 and translated up to ''Zoku Owarimonogatari''.

* ActorAllusion: At the end of "Nadeko Medusa"'s [[TheStinger stinger]], Nadeko makes a lame pun and claims, "No pun intended!", much like [[LightNovel/SasamisanAtGanbaranai Kagami Yagami]] (also voiced by Creator/KanaHanazawa).

* TheThingThatGoesDoink: One scene repeatedly cuts to a closeup of one.

* LuckyTranslation: The portmanteau in the title works just as well in English (''[=GhoSTory=]''/''[=MonSTory=]'', pick one). The sequel book ''Nisemonogatari'' also applies ("[=ImpoSTory=]"), but the series' other three books, ''Nekomonogatari'' ("Cat Story"), ''Kizumonogatari'' ("Damaged Goods Story"), and ''Kabukimonogatari'' ("Slope Story"), don't, but they're not really puns in Japanese either...so maybe that makes it double lucky.
** Nekomonogatari can also be translated as "Cat Tale".
** Kabukimonogatari has been called "Twistory."
