In the film much of his back story has been dropped although it is not completely forgotten. In the movie Matt Helm is photographer of scantly dressed women for a fictional “Slay Mate Magazine” (a parody of Playboy).
Matt has retired from being a spy and now lives like Hugh Hefner as he surrounds himself with beautiful woman.
The movie is a strange mixture or genres and switches between parody and brutal espionage thriller in which characters are killed. There are also musical numbers and Matt (Dean Martin) semi-narrates the movie through song fragments. The movie is also a cutting-edge 1960s sex comedy with scantily clad women with double entendre names. The movie opens with a strip tease that fades before showing any taboo bits.
This is the first of a series of four Matt Helm films followed by; Murderers' Row (1966), The Ambushers (1967), The Wrecking Crew (1969).
