* TheLastOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers: At the library, Adolf proposes using the books to build a trap that sends Elsa into a pit full of [[PiranhaProblem piranhas]], [[LavaPit lava]], and [[AgainstMyReligion bacon.]]

* TranslationConvention: The soldier who removes Jojo from the firing squad area doesn't seem surprised to hear Jojo speaking English. Therefore, it is likely that Jojo and the other characters are speaking German in-universe and it is being translated into English for the viewers.

* TranslationConvention: German speech is translated into English [[JustAStupidAccent with a German accent]], apart from a few minor words that go untranslated, like "heil" and "tschüss." * BlackAndGrayMorality: While the film makes it obvious the Nazi’s are undeniably immoral and evil and got what’s coming to them, however what’s seen of the allied forces are not exactly painted in a noble light either, [[spoiler: as after they bomb the town and start rounding up the survivors they are prepared to execute children (including Jojo, who had already rejected the Nazi idealogy, only surviving thanks to Klenzendorf pretending he was a Jew) without much effort to identify who were true Nazis/Hitler Youth’s and who weren’t.]]

* LaboriousLaces: Jojo constantly fails to tie his own shoes, which is a deep embarrassment for him considering that he hopes to join the ''Hitlerjugen''.

** Fraulein Rahm claims to have had 18 children. If so, she should be wearing the German Mother's Cross (Mutterkreuze), First Class medal, awarded to women with eight or more children. Also, she wouldn't be in uniform, as German mothers were encouraged to be full time housewives.

* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler:Jojo loses his mother and is badly traumatized by the horrors of her execution and the Allies' takeover, but he has a HeelRealization and sees the Nazi party for the fascistic, genocidal, and hypocritical nutcases they were, and ultimately survives the war with Elsa.]]

* MisplacedRetribution: After Jojo is injured by a grenade, his mother confronts Klenzendorf, kicking him in the groin and hitsting in the face with her glove, she dismisses Klenzendorf‘s attempt to explain that Jojo snatched the grendade from him.

While Jojo struggles to blend in, his mother (Creator/ScarlettJohansson) rescues a Jewish girl named Elsa (Thomasin [=McKenzie=]) and hides her in their home. When Jojo meets Elsa, he begins to have second thoughts about being a Nazi.

* EvilIsBigger: The film has no real BigBad besides Nazism in general, but the Gestapo agents who raid Jojo's house are the most direct threat in the film and [[LargeAndInCharge their leader]], played by 6'7 Creator/StephenMerchant, looks about twice the size of the rest of his men.

* FeetFirstIntroduction: Rosie enters several scenes foot-first, identified by her distinctive shoes. [[spoiler: These are done to establish her trademark footwear for TheReveal of her hanged body, which is only seen from the legs down and can only be identified by her shoes]].

* AdaptationalHeroism: In contrast to Johannes in the original book, who is a manipulative VillainProtagonist with no sympathetic qualities, Jojo, while undoubtedly a Nazi with all the fascism and virulent bigotry that that entails, is largely depicted as a kind kid deep down who, although wrapped up in Nazi propaganda, lacks the willpower to actually commit the acts that being a Nazi requires. By the end, [[spoiler:he makes a HeelFaceTurn and renounces his Nazism after seeing how bad they really are]].

* OohMeAccentsSlipping: Thomasin [=McKenzie=]'s New Zealand accent is often pretty noticeable.
