Its story revolves around former Special Forces operative Wade Wilson, who, after having his skin disfigured by a rogue experiment designed to give him a HealingFactor, decides to get revenge for his torture and hideous disfigurement as the HeroicComedicSociopath mercenary, Deadpool. However, when he discovers that his OldFlame is the target of his sworn nemesis, Wilson decides to give this hero thing the old college try.

* AbsurdlySharpBlade: Deadpool's Katanas are able to cut through anything he uses them on in the movie with no effort on his part, with the only exception being the axes Ajax uses against him.

** While being experimented on, Wade begs the scientists working on him not to give him a [[Film/GreenLantern2011 green, animated costume]]. Speaking of, this is the second time Ryan Reynolds plays a comic-book character whose love interest in the movie [[spoiler:gains super powers and becomes his enemy in the comics. She eventually gets better but they are no longer lovers]].

** Even Deadpool admits that Ajax's quip "I hear you grow back body parts now, Wade? When I'm finished, [[RussianReversal parts will have to grow back you]]" is a "good one."

* AdaptationalAttractiveness: By nature of being played by Creator/RyanReynolds, Wade Wilson is ''much'' more handsome in the film than his comic counterpart. Even when his face is scarred, it's still hard to say he's ugly given Ryan Reynolds' natural attractiveness is still prevalent. This is PlayedForDrama; unlike the comics (where Deadpool doesn't like his scars, but has come to accept them and still actively pursues romance in spite of them), Wade is so ashamed of his scars that he can't even bring himself to ''approach'' Vanessa until [[DamselInDistress she's in danger]]. While it's played straight after Wade gets his powers and his scars, it's averted before that point: in the rare instances in the comics where Wade is shown unscarred, he's quite handsome. At one point in the comics, Wade described himself as looking like "Ryan Reynolds crossed with a shar pei," implying that at before the scarring, he was at a similar level of attractiveness as Ryan Reynolds.

** In the comics, Negasonic Teenage Warhead is a psychic with the powers of telepathy and precognition, neither of which really warrant the over-the-top name. Made significantly more fitting in the film, since she has the power to emit extremely powerful waves of heat energy, like Cannonball.

** A ''very'' minor example exists in Jeremy Garrett, whose comics counterpart Gavin was a JerkJock turned pizza delivery boy who started a heinous rumor about a girl from his school nine years prior that ruined her life, the details of which are so hideous that they're never shown to the reader but just ''hearing'' the rumor was enough to turn the other person in the room against him instantly. Jeremy by comparison is "merely" a stalker. Due to the relative lightness of his crimes, Wade also merely scares him into stopping rather than outright kill him like Comic Deadpool did to Gavin. Jeremy is also just a teenager so Wade treats him as more of a dumb kid who needs to be scared straight instead of an actual bad person. Gavin, by contrast, was a grown adult who ''still'' refused to feel guilt for his actions even after hearing how it had ruined the girl's life and Wade, while maintaining his jokey demeanor, clearly felt visible disgust and contempt for him.
* AdaptationalNationality: Ajax is English rather than American.

* AdaptationExpansion: The CG test that greenlighted the film gets this treatment in the highway fight.

** To make the movie more self-contained (and leave some room for any future films on the Weapon X Project) Deadpool's power is from his own innate mutation rather than from Wolverine.
** In the comics, Vanessa is a mutant shape-shifter with mimicry abilities codenamed Copycat. Here, she's just a regular human. (On the production features of the DVD, director Tim Miller says that was left open for future development.)
** Bob, Agent of HYDRA, gets a cameo in the film, but rather than being an agent of HYDRA ([[Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse for obvious copyright reasons]]) he's just a mercenary Wade knew prior to becoming Deadpool.

* AffectionateParody: Of Superhero Origin Movies, starting from the opening credits ''with the credits themselves''. Deadpool mocks the [[ThreePointLanding "superhero landing"]] as impractical, has fun at the more classically heroic X-Men's expense, and Deadpool's heroics are played for bloody laughs. It's almost a {{Deconstruction}}, but it's having too much damn fun.

* AmmunitionConservation: During the highway confrontation, Deadpool tells Ajax's mooks they will have to share bullets. He then proceeds to try killing 12 of them with as few bullets as possible.

** Since Deadpool is immortal and has a rapid healing factor, he can do a lot of things that would kill or permanently injure other characters, adding to the BlackComedy. This includes him attacking Colossus, which only serves to break both his hands and a leg, one by one -- and then he ''cuts one of those hands off'' to escape handcuffs. The severed hand he leaves behind is flipping Colossus off.

** During the opening fight scene, one of the Mooks shoots Deadpool in the ass -- literally up his ass. LampShaded in the voice-over/fourth wall-break.

* AppliedMathematics: Deadpool lampshades a fourth wall break inside a fourth wall break.

* AreYouPonderingWhatImPondering: Wade thinks Vanessa was about to propose and beat her to the punch, while she apparently was going to request anal sex. She plays it off like she ''was'' thinking the same thing.

* ArtisticLicenseChemistry: Oxygen doesn't burn like that; it requires something to react with, like wood or gasoline. One does not burn in the absence of the other. Throwing a lit match in front of a flow of pure oxygen would merely make the match burn quickly until all fuel (the wood) has burned up.

** Negasonic Teenage Warhead is a minor X-Men character who died in her first appearance and has only made a few scant appearances posthumously since. Here she's a supporting character who eventually teams up with Wade. Naturally, after the success of the film, she was brought back in the comics with a new appearance similar to the film's, and featured as a Deadpool supporting character.

** Pretty much everyone one in the lab completely deserved what they got, as their whole job is basically using ColdBloodedTorture to bring out people's latent superpowers, and while they may seem [[WellIntentionedExtremist somewhat justified at first,]] they eventually reveal they don't do it to make people superheroes, but [[JerkWithAHeartOfJerk soley for their own personal gain.]]

* AnAssKickingChristmas: Deadpool seems to be convinced it's Christmas throughout the film. According to Dopinder it's actually April.

* AutobotsRockOut: "[[Music/{{DMX}} X Gon' Give It to Ya]]" plays as Deadpool, Colossus, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead prepare to confront Ajax and Angel Dust. When Negasonic interrupts and cuts the music off, Deadpool tells the sound guys to cue it back up.

* BadassBystander: The various patrons of the BadGuyBar are mercenaries and don't care much about Weasel and Deadpool's superheroing. However, when Angel Dust and Ajax start threatening the bartender, [[spoiler:they pull out their weapons ''all at once'' and force them to back off. Even for two powerful and ax-crazy mutants, that's a bit too much firepower]].

* BadGuyBar: "Sister Margaret's Home for Wayward Girls", the bar where mercenaries, enforcers and thugs hang out and accept contract work. Weasel is the barman. Apparently there's a somewhat sophisticated job-tracking system managed by chipped cards. It also happens to be the one place where threatening the bartender for information might get you killed, [[spoiler:as Angel Dust and Ajax find out]].

** During Colossus' "Four or five moments" speech. When Colossus comes to "Spare an enemy", Wade and Francis exchange a look and nod at one another. For just a few seconds it seems like Wade might actually turn over a new leaf... [[spoiler:[[BoomHeadshot then he shoots Francis in the face.]]]]

** When Wade shows up at the X mansion and asks Negasonic if Colossus is home, she makes a snide comment about Deadpool taking him to dinner. For a moment it seems like Wade is about to berate her by stating that there's nothing wrong with two guys going out together… but then he says that there's nothing wrong with having dinner early in the day or saving money by eating the early-bird special (typically associated with senior citizens).

* BattleAmongstTheFlames: Wade's first fight with Ajax after he escapes the oxygen chamber is one, as the escape was facilitated by an explosion that set the whole facility on fire.

* BerserkButton: Ajax hates being called his real first name, Francis. He takes things personal after Wade learns it and mocks him with it.

** Vanessa, suffering from the effects of oxygen deprivation, cutting her own ropes with the blade of a katana embedded in her pod, pulling the katana out from where it's embedded by ''gripping it by the blade with her bare hands'', escaping from the pod and then saving Deadpool from a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown by impaling Francis.

* BigThinShortTrio: The three "superheroes": Colossus (big), Deadpool (tall and thin) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (short).
* BilingualBonus: Dopinder's romantic rival, his cousin, is named Bandhu. "Bandhu" is actually the [[IronicName Hindi word for "Friend"]].

None of this is treated seriously and neither is the rest of the film.
** Later, when admiring Negasonic Teenage Warhead's power, Deadpool makes a comment about feeling bad for the guy who tries to pressure her into prom sex.

* BloodierAndGorier: Than the previous entries of the ''Film/XMenFilmSeries'', with Deadpool [[BoomHeadshot shooting mooks in the face]], impaling them with his swords, [[OffWithHisHead decapitating them]] and then drop-kicking their heads, and more. Also no PrettyLittleHeadshots either, there are even a few scenes where the viscera from having their brains blown out can still be seen sitting on the scenery.

He mentions Wolverine having "a pair of smooth criminals down under," switching to an Australian accent to reference Wolverine's ''actor'', Australian Creator/HughJackman.

** Deadpool references ''X-Men'' multiple times. Not the X-Men team, the ''X-Men'' films.

** Vanessa takes off Deadpool's mask and he's revealed to have a picture of Hugh Jackman's face stapled on underneath. Not even in character as Wolverine, just... Hugh Jackman.

* BrickJoke: Every gag in the film is given a CallBack or CallForward at another point.

** In a flashback, it's mentioned that among some rough places Wade did some jobs in, one of them is Jacksonville. At first, it seems like a random little TakeThat as he'd later make a similar one to Detroit. [[spoiler:During his assault against Ajax's masked goons, he stops and realizes one of them is [[MythologyGag Bob]], whom he remembers from a job in Jacksonville. And apparently he wasn't making up the bit about the TGI Friday's.]]
** Wade breaks his hand attempting a GroinAttack on Colossus. [[spoiler:Angel Dust, who has superhuman strength, manages to pull it off with more successful results.]]

** Early in the movie, Deadpool says that the reason he wears red is so "[[BringMyRedJacket bad guys can't see (him) bleed.]]" Later in the movie, during the montage of Deadpool's first forays at hunting down Francis, his white hoodie gets soaked in his own blood and Blind Al suggests he wear red. Also regarding his costume, Al tells him he sounds like he has a dick in his mouth when he's wearing his mask, and another flashback has him interrogating henchmen in a badly-made mask, and wondering if people can't hear him through it.

** When Deadpool is told to say Francis's name for the final time, he rubs his hands together and says he's gonna spell it out. After the firefight, Deadpool poses the bodies of the mooks to spell "FRANCIS", complete with a severed head to dot the "I".

* BroadStrokes: The movie seems to have this relationship with ''Film/XMenOriginsWolverine'' and the Fox ''X-Men'' Film Universe in general. With ''Origins'' it clearly takes place in separate continuities, but there are enough parallels between the two of them that it can be assumed that at least some of the events of ''X-Men Origins'' happened in Deadpool's past. Deadpool is still played by Creator/RyanReynolds, the X-Men exist in this universe, he has definitely met Wolverine at least once (and recognizes him as Creator/HughJackman), the X-Men mansion looks the same as in the films, he wonders if he'll see the [[Creator/JamesMcAvoy McAvoy]] or [[Creator/PatrickStewart Stewart]] Professor X and comments on the different timelines being confusing. Ajax's organization is also never explicitly called "Weapon X" in the movie, so nothing contradicts it outright. But Colossus is completely different from the Daniel Cudmore version, being larger, always in armored form, speaking in a Russian accent and having a different design.

** Later, when Deadpool is punched across the bridge by Colossus, his sideway flight is shot in slow motion.

** As mentioned above in AmusingInjuries, since there's absolutely zero chance of Deadpool dying, much of the movie involves him humorously absorbing injuries that would be career-enders or deadly for anyone whose superpowers didn't include a healing factor that makes Wolverine's look sickly.

* CallBack: When Wade and Vanessa meet, they [[MiseryPoker jokingly compete]] to see who has the worst (fictional) DarkAndTroubledPast. Vanessa says she was abused by her uncles, who took turns. When they learn that Wade has cancer, it turns out that Vanessa knows a lot about the disease... because her uncle had thyroid cancer. There is a final callback to this conversation when Wade and Vanessa reunite. Wade tells Vanessa a tale of woe about how he is living in a crackhouse with a family of twelve spooning for warmth. Vanessa dryly replies, "So you live in a house?" This might also be a reference to Monty Python's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xe1a1wHxTyo Four Yorkshiremen]] sketch.

* CanonDiscontinuity: It's in the same canon as the ''X-Men'' Films... [[spoiler:at least, the ones that are still canon post-''Days of Future Past'']], but it retains none of the story from ''X-Men Origins: Wolverine'' where Wade Wilson/Deadpool was originally introduced -- unless you count a CutawayGag describing a Weapon XI action figure as "the worst thing that could happen."
* CantDefaultToMurder: Parodied. Wade has Ajax at gunpoint at the climax, and Colossus starts into a PatrickStewartSpeech trying to convince Deadpool to let the man live--and Wade shoots the villain in the head mid-speech and starts complaining about Colossus monologuing.

** In the middle of a car crash he wonders aloud whether he left the stove on.

** Creator/HughJackman similarly appears on the cover of a magazine, while this movie takes place in the same universe as the ''Film/XMenFilmSeries'' where he plays Wolverine.
** Weasel mentions ''Film/BladeII'', a film based off a Marvel character who has crossed paths with the X-Men and Deadpool before and all of whom exist in this universe. Reynolds starred in the sequel, ''Film/BladeTrinity''.

** Blind Al's dinky little holdout pistol, [[spoiler:which is the only gun that Deadpool has on his person rather than in the duffle bag when going to confront Ajax, so ends up the only gun he has available when he leaves the bag in the taxi]].

* TheCoatsAreOff: Variation. Negasonic wears a BadassLongcoat and a turtleneck over her X-Men uniform on the way to the final battle. However both are incinerated the instant she ignites her powers to fight Angel Dust.

** Black must be Ellie's favorite because that's the only color she wears when she's not in her X-Men uniform.

** Deadpool constantly sucker-punches his foes when they think he's been downed and has no problem [[GroinAttack going below the belt]]. He's also forced into being pragmatic when he faces a freeway full of {{mooks}} and has only 12 bullets.

* ComesGreatResponsibility: {{Parodied|Trope}} in the one of the film's tag lines: "With great power comes great irresponsibility."

** Ajax (a.k.a Francis), the sadistic, [[TheBrute brutish]] warden who tortures his inmates and bears a grudge against Wade, is fused with Doctor Killebrew, the scientist in charge of the facility who gave Deadpool his powers.
** In the comics, Weasel is Deadpool's weapons supplier, best friend, confidante, and punching bag. Here, he's all that plus fills Patch's role in charge of the BadGuyBar at the former Sister Margaret's School for Wayward Children (a.k.a. the Hellhouse).

* TheCorrupter: Deadpool semi-accidentally acts as one to the cab driver that pops up a couple times throughout the film. He ''pretends'' (very badly) to be horrified with the results (kidnapping a love rival), but in reality, he's ''delighted'', and even a bit proud of the cabbie's progress.

** When Deadpool enters a fight with only two pistols, there are also more opponents than he has rounds, so he invites the audience to count them down with him. The rounds even seem to be stamped with their numbers in order.

* CrapsackWorld: In Wade's cynical observation, "Life is a series of train wrecks, separated by brief, commercial-like moments of happiness." In a world where terminal patients are injected with serum and then tortured repeatedly to make them involuntarily mutate, [[spoiler:[[SuperhumanTrafficking then sold as super-slaves]] ''[[SuperhumanTrafficking if]]'' [[SuperhumanTrafficking they survive the process]]]] it must be said; he has a point.
* CreativeClosingCredits: The film features both creative opening and closing credit sequences: The opening credits poke fun at the character tropes featured in the movie; the closing credits show an animated Deadpool fooling around, making jokes about the actors, and prancing about the screen on a unicorn.

** The opening credits are all this -- along with jokes on the producers, writers, and director, the actors are each listed by their character trope instead by name.

* CurseCutShort: Wade invokes this shortly before passing out and it's revealed that he has cancer.

* DamselInDistress: Vanessa is very keen on defying this one, saying it's not a role she's up for playing as the second Red Band trailer shows her decking [[TheDragon Angel Dust]] in the face. Given that Angel Dust is later seen scoring an OHKO on ''Colossus'', [[BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu it likely had no effect]], but [[PluckyGirl Nessa gets points for trying]].

* DeconstructiveParody: The film shows [[WrongGenreSavvy how ineffective Colossus's morals would be]] in a DarkerAndEdgier film, but at the same time, it's also a DenserAndWackier film and he does get some good moments.

* DemotedToExtra: The fellow prisoner that Pool shares a meaningful moment with plays a much greater part in Deadpool's original backstory, and is in fact one of the pivotal pillars to Deadpool becoming who he is. In the movie he's reduced to two (heartwarming and meaningful, but still just two) brief scenes.

* DiegeticSwitch: Wham!'s romantic "Careless Whispers" fades over from Wade's cellphone to the soundtrack in TheBigDamnKiss closing.

** Then at the end of the movie when Vanessa removes the mask... only to find Deadpool has stapled a photograph of Creator/HughJackman's face underneath it.
* TheDreaded: Deadpool's bad-guy hunting has apparently made a big enough impact that as soon as "Agent Smith" sees him, [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere he immediately makes a run for it.]] It's also implied that because of him, there was a big disruption to Ajax's "supply chain".

* EmbarrassingFirstName: Deadpool constantly makes fun of the fact that Ajax's real name is "Francis" to the point where he '''exclusively''' calls him that. But once he demands that he "say my name," Deadpool doesn't give him the honor of reciting it.

* EroticEating: A variant: On Thanksgiving Wade and Vanessa have sex while feeding each other bits of pie and the like and getting it all over each other's faces.

** On another note, with the exception of Deadpool's [[FourthWallObserver Fourth Wall Observations]] and dialogue that is a little raunchier than the norm, it starts out looking like most ''X-Men'' movies. It's easy to (at first) think that they got an R rating so that they were free to make some of the jokes befitting [[HeroicComedicSociopath Deadpool]], and maybe drop more than one F-Bomb. Then, at the end of the car chase, the wedgie'd biker gets [[OffWithHisHead decapitated by his bike's chain]] and another guy turns into red paste on an overhanging street sign, just to make it clear that no, it ''earned'' that.

* ExecutiveMeddling: {{Invoked}}. Fox chopped the movie's budget by '''$7 million''' despite filming nearing completion, and the writers turned it into a series of jokes:

* ExplainExplainOhCrap: PlayedForLaughs when Weasel is trying to come up with a nickname for Wade. When he offers "Mr. Neverdie", he realizes that he put all his money on the dead pool on Wade... who will ''never die''.

* FacialDialogue: Ellie is close to a SilentSnarker with her deadpan, [[FascinatingEyebrow raised-eyebrow]] reaction to all the madness taking place around her.
* FacialHorror: Wade's new HealingFactor is going into overdrive to stop his cancer which leaves his face (along with the rest of him) horribly scarred.

** Ajax's mutation burned out his nerve endings, in contrast to Wade's HealingFactor. He casually bends steel without damaging his muscles and tendons through overuse and is able to run and fight effectively not long after being stabbed through the shoulder or through the leg, without his injuries getting worse or visibly handicapping his performance.
** Though Deadpool is more noticeable for his extraordinary HealingFactor, he ignores pain at certain times despite not being a definite ability. It's noticeable when he cuts [[AnArmAndALeg his own hand off]] with no difficulty after being cuffed by Colossus. His bad-guy-hunting montage also has a {{mook|s}} shoot him in the back a few times, yet he shows no visible signs of reacting to the shots. Except possibly annoyance.

** The writers didn't give Angel Dust any depth. There's three things about her: She's Ajax's second-in-command, she's easy to provoke, and she's a CombatPragmatist who exploits Colossus's gentlemanly behavior when she suffers a WardrobeMalfunction.
** Negasonic lives up to her billing in the credits as "A moody teen." That's pretty much the extent of her character (with the addition that she also kicks ass when required).

* ForTheEvulz: After successfully triggering Wade's mutation via ColdBloodedTorture, Ajax decides to continue torturing him "Not because I have to... because I ''want'' to."

** When Deadpool, Colossus and NTW confront Ajax and Angel Dust, Ajax tells Deadpool to SayMyName (a CallBack to Wade's "activation" in the workshop). Deadpool mutters "Imma spell it out for you." [[spoiler:After dispatching the group of mooks, a shot from Ajax's viewpoint shows Deadpool standing next to the bodies of nine mooks, arranged to spell out "Francis". The letter "I" is dotted with a mook's severed head. And one of the corpses is ''mooning'' him.]]

** During the highway fight scene, several big names at Marvel show up on highway signs, such as Ditko, Liefeld and Nicleza.
* AFriendInNeed: Ajax and Angel are in the bar trying to find Wade, but Weasel isn't telling them anything. Angel grabs Weasel in a NeckLift to force him to talk. The very moment she touches him, everyone in the bar pulls their guns. Fingers are on the triggers and they're ready to go. Weasel tells her what she just did was a bad move. Ajax plays it nonchalant but he knows when to fold 'em, and he and Angel quickly leave.

* FullFrontalAssault: During his first fight with Ajax, Wade removes his tattered hospital robes when they catch fire, having nothing underneath.

* GentleGiant: Colossus is friendly, hilarious and towers over everyone. Angel Dust responds to his gentlemanly behavior towards her with, "Aww, how sweet." [[spoiler:Still doesn't stop her from delivering a [[GroinAttack sneak attack]], though.]]

* GondorCallsForAid: When Deadpool prepares to go rescue Vanessa he stops by the X-Mansion to ask Colossus and Negasonic for help.

** After surviving the destruction of the workshop, Deadpool explains "It didn't just give me the cure to 'el cáncer,' it gave me the cure to 'el ''everything''.'"
* GrayRainOfDepression: Downplayed. It rains outside the apartment after Wade learns about his late-stage cancer.

* HappyEnding: Lampshaded by Wade in the final moments.

* HateSink: [[BigBad Ajax]] is a high ranking member of the Weapon X program and the one responsible for Deadpool's creation. Under the guise of making those that come under his care "superheroes," he subjects them to weeks of torture to awaken their mutant gene before selling them off to the highest bidder. Kidnapping Vanessa and locking her in an oxygen chamber, he laughs maliciously, revealing that there was no cure for Deadpool's transformation.

* HollywoodDensity: Deadpool fills a duffel bag with a great many guns (mostly long arms) and what is stated to be 3000 rounds of ammunition. Unless composed entirely of puny .22's, the ammo alone would weigh about 100 pounds with the weapons themselves adding an equal amount. While this is nothing a SuperStrength character couldn't handle, the bag he puts it in sits high up on his back as if it were filled with clothes.

* HowWeGotHere: ''Twice''. The film opens with a revolving shot of Deadpool hijacking a car in the middle of a bridge. The film proceeds to show how he got there, from boarding a taxi to stopping in the bridge. After falling into a truck, it then flashbacks to much earlier, showing his SuperheroOrigin. Once we get back to the taxi, the film [[FastForwardGag fast forwards back to the truck scene]]. Deadpool [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] this:

* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Non-romantic example in the massive, towering Colossus and his trainee, the short Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

* IfYouThoughtThatWasBad: Ajax tortures Wade for months to trigger his mutation to no avail. Wade calls him out on this, making Ajax put him in a low-oxygen chamber in order to induce enough trauma to do the deed. The hypoxia triggers Wade's powers while inducing generalized tissue death on his skin, destroying Wade's outward appearance. The main plot drive is Wade's hunt for Ajax in order to get this fixed to be able to face Vanessa.

* ImprobableWeaponUser: Wade will kill bad guys with anything he can find; cigarette lighters, pool cues... zambonis.

* InMediasRes: The film [[spoiler:starts out at the beginning of Deadpool's RoaringRampageOfRevenge on Ajax]] before cutting to the first HowWeGotHere sequence. Essentially, it switches back and forth between the second and first acts until the point where Deadpool gets his powers and then the third act is uninterrupted.

** Parodied as Deadpool wants to know where Francis is. Deadpool tortures a man bloodied and crawling across an ice rink with a Zamboni... but is half the rink's length away. Thus allowing Deadpool to give him a five-minute warning.
** None of his victims answer with Francis's location because either they don't know it or they don't realize Deadpool is referring to "Ajax" -- the only name they are likely to know Francis by. The fact that he shows some of them a crude stick-figure crayon drawing labelled "Francis", as though that would help them recognize the man he's looking for, doesn't help any. Nor that, when beating up Latino thugs, he asks them, "¿Donde está Francesca?"

* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: After knocking down Ajax from his motorcycle in the highway scene, he proceeds to spend a good minute exercising this trope while narrating his actions in a sport announcer tone.
* KickTheSonOfABitch: On being caught by Deadpool, the Recruiter readily spills the beans on the exact location of his boss. Deadpool decides to torture him anyway.
* KilledMidSentence: Given a twist in that [[spoiler:Ajax]] wasn't even talking, it is [[spoiler:Colossus]] who was in the middle of a speech when [[spoiler:Deadpool gets tired of listening and executes Ajax like he meant to before Colossus started trying to convince him to take him in alive]].
* KnightKnaveAndSquire: Colossus is the Knight, the idealistic X-Man who encourages Deadpool to be a better man, Deadpool is the Knave, a CombatPragmatist who is a [[HeroicComedicSociopath heroic comedic sociopathic]] mercenary, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead is the Squire, an X-men trainee under Colossus's wing.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: When everyone in Weasel's bar pulls a gun on Ajax and Angel Dust for threatening Weasel, the two quietly leave. Despite each having superpowers, neither is ImmuneToBullets.

* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Though Weasel isn't aware he's in a film like Wade post-mutation, he still comments at one point "Deadpool, sounds like a fucking franchise." He also earlier states, when referring Wade to the Recruiter, "You should talk to him, it might further the plot" -- which [[PlotDevice is exactly what he does.]]

* LetsDance: Deadpool says this just before a major fight, and then he says that by it he means "Let's try to kill each other."

** Later, after Negasonic's explosion topples the Helicarrier, Deadpool ends up dangling from the oxygen-deprivation tank where he puts Vanessa for her safety, the whole thing only held by a rope. And then a container slides toward them, forcing the two into a long fall.

* LuckyTranslation: The French version translates the "Fat Gandalf" biker as "Gandalf le Gros," which not only means the same thing but is one letter away from Gandalf le Gris (the Grey).

* MaleGaze: "Every time I see her it's like the first time..." [shot of Vanessa bending forwards in a short tight skirt] "...especially from this angle."

*** In the highway fight, Deadpool's only reaction to having a bullet-hole straight through his arm is to [[FlippingTheBird flip the bird]] at the mook who just put it there.

*** Deadpool starts making ''Tyrannosaurus rex'' jokes after busting both of his wrists trying to punch Colossus. Once he breaks a leg, he goes on about "the one-legged man in the ass-kicking contest". It gets to where he's lampshading the [[Film/MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail Black Knight]] with his limbs just being broken instead of gone, not that them being gone would be any more troublesome.
*** Wade is stabbed in the head with a knife, but when he sees his beloved Vanessa, he starts [[MediumShiftGag seeing cute animals surround her]], makes romantic gestures and has Music/{{Chicago}} playing in his head. This is implied to be happening because keeping the knife in is preventing his body from healing the brain damage and making him hallucinate.

* MediumAwareness: As expected, Deadpool repeatedly makes reference to the fact that he's in a film and even tells the audience to [[spoiler:go home in TheStinger à la ''Film/FerrisBuellersDayOff'' no less.]]
* MentorArchetype: Colossus is Negasonic Teenage Warhead's mentor, and as such, he is both much older and more mature. He also tries to guide Deadpool unto a heroic path.

* MetronomicManMashing: Colossus dominates the later part of the fight with Angel Dust once he starts putting some weight behind his hits. Near the end of his winning streak, he overpowers her neck lock attempt and smashes her to the ground repeatedly with a series of choke-slams before finishing it with a haymaker that almost knocks her out. Unfortunately he loses his momentum once he sees her nip slip, and she sucker-punches him in the groin.

* MoodWhiplash: The movie is a profane BlackComedy... until Wade and Vanessa fall in love, and their love story is played completely unironically. Then it's back to being a BlackComedy... until Wade is [[ColdBloodedTorture tortured to the brink of death]] by Ajax, and his suffering is PlayedForDrama. Then it's back to BlackComedy when Wade hunts Ajax down. It's lampshaded by Deadpool himself, who variously describes the movie as "a love story," "a horror story," and "a different kind of superhero story."

* MsFanservice: In addition to her nude sex scene with Wade, (though with a bit of HandOrObjectUnderwear and SceneryCensor) Morena Baccarin spends a lot of time in quite skimpy outfits, (justified as Vanessa is a prostitute who also waitresses at a strip club) with the camera in one scene in particular [[MaleGaze focusing heavily on her butt]].
* MultilayerFacade: Played for laughs. When Deadpool is unmasked by Vanessa he reveals another Hugh Jackman mask beneath.

* MusicalisInterruptus: Deadpool, Negasonic and Colossus are all walking up to confront Ajax as DMX's "X Gonna Give It to Ya" plays -- "Hey, where's your duffel bag?"

* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Deadpool showing Francis his face during the highway scene. Until then, Francis thought that Wade died in the lab that he destroyed. Had Wade never shown his face, Francis wouldn't have had any reason to go after Vanessa. Also Colossus and Nega interrupting Wade produced some unfortunate results. Had they not intervened, or at least paid attention to Francis, he wouldn't have escaped and wouldn't be able to kidnap Vanessa.
* NiceMeanAndInbetween: Of the main three, Colossus is the nice, as he's always kind and [[TheHero noble-hearted]], Deadpool is the mean, being a {{Jerkass}} AntiHero and [[BloodKnight kind of a psycho]], and Negasonic Teenage Warhead is the in-between (she's [[DeadpanSnarker pretty sarcastic]], but still a lot nicer than Deadpool, and a straight-up hero, if not quite TheParagon Colossus is.)
* NippleAndDimed: [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-zagged]], likely because it costs more money to show the principal actress's breasts, or they didn't have it in their contract. The strippers at the club are shown with their [[UnusualEuphemism peppermint cremes]] on full display, but Vanessa and Angel Dust are {{Scenery Censor}}ed by Wade and Colossus's hands, respectively.
* NoBudget: Invoked and lampshaded by Deadpool when he goes to visit the Xavier mansion, only to find Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead as the only people there. It's later parodied again when Deadpool notes that they couldn't afford a special effects-laden [[TheStinger post-credits scene]], either.

** In the start of test footage, Deadpool greets the audience while sitting on an overpass and listening to Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl."

** One of the best examples in the movie proper is a fourth wall break inside a fourth wall break. Which is lampshaded:

** Angel Dust does this to the first few punches from Colossus and she totally controls the beginning of their fight, until he starts putting in real effort.

** Ajax, in his text to Wade [[spoiler:telling him to come to him for Vanessa]] adds a shit emoji to conclude his text.

** The Recruiter's reaction when he realizes the psycho in the masked outfit coming after him is Wilson.

'''Deadpool:''' This isn't going to go well for you, no. ''[glances at camera]'' You're going to want to look away. ''[moves the camera to the side as we hear Smith screaming and onlookers react in horror]''

* OneBulletLeft: In the shootout on the highway, Deadpool has to kill twenty some-odd mercs, but only has twelve bullets in his guns. By the end of the fight, he's down to one bullet and three mercs, forcing him to go for the triple headshot kill.

* OneHitPolykill: Deadpool does this twice: once at the beginning of the freeway gunfight, when he kills "the guy who wore the brown pants" along with a mook behind him; and again at the end, where he does one better, headshotting three baddies with a single bullet. This was not merely RuleOfCool, either; he only had OneBulletLeft.

* OneWordTitle
* OralFixation: Deadpool asks Angel Dust if she puts matches in her mouth due to an oral fixation, or cause she's [[Film/{{Cobra}} a huge fan of Sylvester Stallone]]. [[ChekhovsGun The match becomes a plot point later]] when [[spoiler:Wade snatches it to set the mutant facility on fire]].

* PaddedSumoGameplay: Non-game example. Colossus and Angel Dust both have SuperStrength and SuperToughness, so until [[spoiler:Colossus [[ChasteHero gives Angel Dust a moment to]] [[WardrobeMalfunction adjust]] and leave himself open to a GroinAttack]], the two just ineffectually clobber each other back and forth.

* PowerWalk: Colossus, Warhead and Deadpool do this to the sound of [[Music/{{DMX}} "X Gon' Give it To Ya"]] before the final showdown. It's parodied in that Negasonic Teenage Warhead ends up noticing Deadpool forgot his gun cache, causing the PowerWalk to abruptly stop as Deadpool tries to retrieve it. After giving up on it, Deadpool ''resumes'' the PowerWalk from the point it left off.
* PreAsskickingOneLiner: Deadpool is fond of dropping a line before eliminating an opponent, like "Daddy needs to express some rage," "This guy's got the right idea! He wore the brown pants," and even "Time to make the [[UnusualEuphemism chimi-fuckin'-changas]]."
* PreViolenceLaughter: Wade calls Jeremy, the pizza guy, out on being a stalker while pulling a knife on him, and tells him that he should never be doing so again. He complies, and Wade begins to smile and lets him off. Everyone else in the room begin to smile and relax too, jokingly lamenting on how scary it was, but then Wade abruptly pins him to a wall, gets his face close to the other and starts to threaten him again with stronger intent. And then he realizes his threat contains an [[invoked]] AccidentalInnuendo, flipping the mood to comedy.

* ProtagonistCenteredMorality: Played for laughs in regards to Dopinder's romantic sub-plot. Deadpool encourages him to pursue a woman he [[EntitledToHaveYou considers to be his rightful property]] even after she willingly went off with his cousin, who is considered a {{Jerkass}} purely because he's good-looking. On Deadpool's advice, Dopinder kidnaps his cousin and plans to either [[DisproportionateRetribution kill or at the very least brutalise him]] just to get his way. There's also the fact that Deadpool was willing to assault a stalker earlier in the film but encourages Dopinder to commit that very same crime because he heard his side of the story.
* PunchCatch: Angel Dust does one to Colossus and crushes his hand as well, while earlier no-selling a few punches from him. This shows just how powerful Angel Dust really is.

* RaceLift: Blind Al, a Caucasian in the comics, has an African-American actress, Leslie Uggams.

* RealLifeWritesThePlot: Budget issues are the reason why there were only two X-Men, as well as why Deadpool kept forgetting his guns and was forced to go hand-to-hand. Naturally, Deadpool can't resist getting in a potshot about the first one.
* RealMenWearPink: Why was [[SoundtrackDissonance "Angel of the Morning"]] playing during the BulletTime sequence in the opening credits? It's what the BigBad's {{Mooks}} were [[LeftTheBackgroundMusicOn listening to on the radio]] when Wade dropped in on them!
* RebelRelaxation: Francis assumes this pose in the back alley where Vanessa mistakes him for Wade.

** PlayedForLaughs. Wade and Vanessa have an intimate discussion early on that seems to initiate a sex scene, complete with "putting balls in holes." [[spoiler:Wade actually used his allotted 48 minutes of "whatever the fuck [he] want[s]" with Vanessa to play skeeball at an arcade.]]
** At one point, Wade is telling Vanessa about his most prized possession while the camera lingers on an action figure of [[spoiler:the ''Film/XMenOriginsWolverine'' Deadpool]]. Then it pans up to him holding an album.

** In a deleted scene, [[spoiler:Wade and Vanessa go to a cancer clinic in Mexico. Wade quickly realizes that it's a scam and kills the "doctor" in revenge, as desperate kids and adults alike are being tricked. However, Wade kills the guy in front of the other patients, stealing their hope. That was the moment Wade decided to call the Recruiter.]]

* RomanticComedy: While the movie is in big part a SuperHeroOrigin story and the marketing campaign made fun of its release during Valentine's weekend, [[GenreBusting it actually works surprisingly well as a romantic comedy]]. Many people who feel like their partner is "[[UglyGuyHotWife too hot]]" for them are going to find it very relatable. Deadpool even tells the audience it's a love story as he's kebabing a mook.
* RRatedOpening: The highway battle, of course, with Deadpool killing a high number of mooks in very gruesome ways, going from snapping their necks, to ''very'' graphic headshots, to impaling them like "fucking kebabs".
* RuderAndCruder: Not only is it more profane than any other X-Men film at the time, but is more profane than the Deadpool comics.

* RustproofBlood: Deadpool's original white uniform is still bright red from the blood stains at the laundromat, long after the blood had time to dry up.

* SayMyName: Wilson discovers Ajax's real name and refuses to call him Ajax anymore, leading to Ajax becoming [[ItsPersonal even more sadistic]] while torturing him, bringing this up while giving a BreakingSpeech about the real purpose of their project. He repeats it near the climax, prompting Deadpool to mention he'll spell it out. He does... with the bodies of Ajax's hired soldiers. [[spoiler:Ajax uses his last words to demand of Deadpool "What's my name?" one last time, only for Deadpool to respond, "Who fucking cares."]]

** Wade having a Weapon XI action figure and cautioning Ajax against sewing his mouth shut are self-depricating take-thats towards ''Film/XMenOriginsWolverine''.
** Deadpool claims the reason Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead were the only X-Men sent to find him is that the film is too low budget to afford the rest of the team.
** The CreditsGag opens with "Starring God's perfect idiot," and ends with "and directed by an overpaid tool."

** At the very end of the credits, Deadpool describes a few details on the sequel -- most notably, that Cable will be in it.

* SexMontage: The film has one of Wade and Vanessa's various romps throughout the holidays. Interrupted by shot of them sitting quietly and reading. "Happy Lent," Wade says.

* ShotInTheAss: At one point Deadpool is shot there by a gunman. He promptly falls to the ground, but the shooter is lured close to his seemingly dead body before Deadpool shoots him from between his legs. Having a healing factor, the shot didn't kill him, but he does limp for a while, remarking that the bullet went "right up Main Street."

* ShownTheirWork: Brianna Hildebrand did a rock playlist to get into Negasonic Teenage Warhead's frame of mind. Music/MonsterMagnet [[https://twitter.com/briannahilde/status/699696145379897344/photo/1 is featured prominently, of course.]]

* SirSwearsAlot: There's rarely a scene where Deadpool/Wade ''doesn't'' swear.

* SomethingWeForgot: Right before the final confrontation, Deadpool, Colossus, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead does a PowerWalk towards Ajax's heavily-guarded base, preparing to kick ass... then Deadpool realized he left his duffel bag full of guns in Dopinder's taxi.

** Fifties' piece "Calendar Girl" will never be same after watching Wade and Vanessa [[SexMontage have sex throughout the year]] to this song.

** In the finale, two lovers are reunited to the tune of "Careless Whispers", a song about infidelity.

* SpectacularSpinning: All over the place in the highway battle. How else you gonna line up a triple headshot?
* SpiritualAntithesis: To ''Film/TheDarkKnight''. Both movies have a dark and gritty atmosphere with lots of realistic violence just to show the consequences of vigilante work, along with a memorable chase sequence. The difference is that Deadpool has more in common with the Joker than Batman, being a disfigured working class psycho-for-hire who commits horrific acts that he finds hilarious and having no qualms about guns or killing. [[spoiler:''The Dark Knight''[='s=] never-kill message also gets deconstructed as Deadpool states that if he doesn't kill the person who ruined his life, then what's stopping him from doing it to somebody else?]]

We also get Ajax threatening to sew Wade's mouth closed to shut him up.

* TalkingIsAFreeAction: When Deadpool, Colossus, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead confront Angel Dust and her [[{{Mooks}} goons]], Ellie invokes what would be more accurately described as "Tweeting is a free action." When Deadpool implores her to go after Angel Dust, she's instead focused on her phone, and every character in the scene stands around until she's finished.

* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: Deadpool, with his two katana swords, does this twice in the film.

* TrainingMontage: [[TrainingFromHell Torture montage]] of Wade being turned into Deadpool.

* VileVillainSaccharineShow: "Saccharine" is not the best word to describe the film, but it ''is'' a DenserAndWackier Action-BlackComedy spinoff of the ''Film/XMenFilmSeries'' series full of over the top violence and 4th-wall breaking. Main villain Ajax however is played completely straight, with the only humor related to him coming from Deadpool trying to piss him off. Any time he starts getting involved in the action things get noticeably more serious.

* VomitIndiscretionShot: Colossus is telling Wade that there are four or five moments in your life where you really can be a hero regardless of your past, in an attempt to get him to [[spoiler:spare Ajax and maybe join the X-Men]]. This inspiring speech is eventually ruined by Deadpool [[spoiler:shooting Ajax in the head]]. Colossus instantly [[StressVomit loses his lunch]]. You can see some of the vomit, but most of it is covered by him turning away.

** The last time we see Dopinder, he had an accident with his cousin Bandhu in the trunk and Deadpool's dufflebag with ALL his guns inside riding shotgun. Of course, it's pretty close to the end of the movie, happening right before the climactic final showdown with Ajax, so there wasn't much time to follow up with him.

* WhatMeasureIsAMook: Though Wade kills quite a number of people on his way to Ajax, in the opening scenes of StormingTheCastle, he sees a distinction between the man who ruined him and the guys who "only work for that shit-spackled muppet fart" and offers them a chance to lay down their guns... but he may have shot himself in the foot turning his offer for "preferential" treatment into "preferential, bordering on gentle... almost lover-like treatment", and they open up on him. However, he does further recognize one of them -- Bob -- as an individual, having met him at some point before in their lives.

** Upon seeing Angel Dust, Deadpool proclaims that he's saving himself for Francis (in the trailers, he says that she's [[BrawnHilda "too much dude"]] for him), which is why he brought in Colossus... [[PunchedAcrossTheRoom who is promptly blasted several yards away with a single punch]]. This serves to set up Negasonic's super-powered tackle. Though it's subverted because Colossus gets up shortly thereafter and proceeds to actually fight Angel Dust on even ground.

** Similarly, Colossus doesn't have much of a problem fighting Angel Dust once she shows that she's as strong as he is and he can't afford to pull punches. Her hitting him in the nuts didn't help her case either.

** One of Deadpool's numerous cheap-shots on Ajax after knocking him off his motorcycle is a Leg Drop that even Hulk Hogan would be proud of.

* WrongGenreSavvy: Colossus. He's extremely nice, principled and honorable, and in a straight superhero movie he'd be right at home and his TheCape approach would probably function. What keeps tripping him up is that this is ''not'' a straight superhero movie, so the unabashed violence and vulgarity of the setting keeps blindsiding him.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Colossus keeps handing out speeches to Deadpool about how there is good in him and how he became a great hero and such throughout the movie, [[ShutUpKirk but Deadpool is having none of it.]]

* YouOweMe: Deadpool uses this trope to enlist Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead as his backup muscle. He calls them out for their interference which led to Ajax's escape and Vanessa's subsequent kidnapping.
