Failsafe Failure

Added DiffLines:

* FailsafeFailure: In the event of biohazardous, volatile, or other contagion escaping, the ship can be destroyed by removing the reactor control rods and shutting down the cooling system. But the Nostromo's self-destruct fail-safe mechanism, ''is woefully unfit for purpose''. Its virtually impossible to initiate this emergency destruction sequence by accident, but just as fiendishly obtrusive to abort it. There is [[ResetButton no quick reset button]]. It will not override without first manually disengaging safety interlocks and inserting the rods back in. If a last-minute-decision was ever made to abort, ''[[OutrunTheFireball you're basically screwed]]''.

** The alien is put into a human body by the Facehugger, whose reproductive organ looks like a vagina with mandibles and a prehensile penis. Its spawn, the Chestburster, looks like an erection with teeth. And the long, eyeless head of an adult Alien is obviously phallic. The Alien was based on a [[http://home.att.net/~ShadowlandHome/Necro4.jpg painting]] by surrealist artist HRGiger, whose nightmarish work is very sexualized. Giger wanted the Alien to be the embodiment of the fear of rape.\\

Neither of those are true, and the planned twist ending isn\'t an example. Jones is never even implied to have been infected; it wasn\'t established until the third movie that animals could be infected. Also, in the second film, nothing stows away with her on the escape pod; the LV-246 infestation is caused by that planet being where they found the eggs in the first place.

* TheEndOrIsIt: [[spoiler:The film leaves open the possibility that the cat that Ripley takes along with her as she flees the soon-to-be-nuked ship has been infected. This is, of course, proven untrue in the second film, and quickly takes a back seat to the fact that the title monster stowed away on Ripley's escape pod. There was also an original TwistEnding planned: the Xenomorph bites Ripley's head off, then records a message in her voice, and relaxes, waiting to get picked up.]]
