Another is when Luffy and Zoro discuss of Nami's fearsome punches, stating that they are imbued with Haki with her not even realizing.

* GadgeteerGenius: Usopp is this UpToEleven; with no chance of getting his Pop Greens, he had to develop some serious ammo to match his New World strength. The results are shown both with his skills, and the way that he helps Buggy Take a Level in Badass.

Swarmed by a group of Marines led by Akainu himself, the Straw Hats escape certain death thanks to Dr. Vegapunk’s experimental time machine, sending their minds five years into the past. When time catches up to them, Luffy resolves to do things differently to ensure that things don’t end that way again, and subsequently decides to take a leaf out of Whitebeard’s book. How will the adventures proceed differently for the Straw Hat Armada?

!!Examples

* AdaptationalBadass: All of the members of the Straw Hat Armada, past and present, but the one that bears the most mentioning is Kaya; Duncan seems to have based her personality off of Unohana from {{Manga/Bleach}}, a motherly YamatoNadeshiko ProperLady sort whose TranquilFury is nearly as potent as Conqueror’s Haki. Heck, there’s a blatant Shout-Out to Unohana shortly after Kaya is first introduced.
* AngstWhatAngst: Kaya in regard of the only secret Usopp had kept from her. [[spoiler:Upon learning about the real identity and intentions of her butler Klahadore, she's not heartbroken but ''pissed'' - due to her stronger personality in this timeline, she saw him as stingy and bossy rather than fatherly, never liking him firsthand.]]
* ATwinkleInTheSky: How the “fight” with Luffy ends for Alvida. Lampshaded:
-->“Luffy admired the twinkling star she made. He always wondered why that happened. Eh, mystery twinkle.”
* BadassBoast: Luffy has had many of these.
** “You can walk away or get thrown far, FAR away. Your choice.”
** “I’m the ‘Terror of Goa’; every restaurant in town is afraid I’ll walk in, devour everything, and run.”
** “Well, for starters, I’m faster than you. To be more precise, I’m faster than you are when you do your stupid Shakushi move. Except I can see where I’m going. On top of that, I’m bulletproof. I’m knifeproof. And I could literally kick your ass to the next island.”
* BerserkButton:
** As in canon, Luffy doesn’t take kindly to threats against his True Companions. But he also doesn’t take kindly to abuse of pets. Mohji, due to being his comrade when he finds that he had been neglecting feeding Richie, gets off relatively easy…with a Haki-empowered death threat.
** As in canon, don’t take Zoro’s swords.
** Unless you outclass Jango by a wide margin, do not call him stupid.
* BreakingSpeech: A downright EPIC one in Chapter 10 in order to defuse Garp's anger towards Luffy's alleged betrayal, thanks in part to his future knowledge and in part due to the Voice of All Things:
-->'''Garp''': ''(livid, with a DeathGlare)'' Luffy.
-->''(everyone begins retreating from Garp)''
-->'''Luffy''': ''(calmly)'' Hey, Gramps. Wow, I can see your veins from here. Have you been taking your blood pressure medicine? You know Boggart wouldn't bug you if it weren't important.
-->'''Garp''': ''Brat.'' I'm going to give you one chance, ''one chance,'' to explain yourself. If I don't like your answer, I'm throwing you into Impel Down myself until I think you've learned your lesson.
-->''({{Beat}})''
-->'''Luffy''': If I became a Marine, I would surely perish.
-->'''Garp''': ''(gritting his teeth so hard that they crack) That's'' your excuse? You were afraid to get killed? Marines lead a dangerous life, I told you that from day one. You telling me I trained a coward?!
-->'''Luffy''': You misunderstand. I did not say I would die in battle. I said I would perish. Disappear. Or maybe, if they wanted to make a point of it, ''executed.''
-->'''Garp''': What the hell are you talking about?
-->'''Luffy''': A healthy tree may bear a bad apple, but the tree is still seen as healthy. That one bad apple is just bad luck. But only a bad seed may grow from bad soil. Its nature is decided for it by the circumstances of its creation. ''(looks Garp in the eye, regretfully)'' I may be your beloved grandson, Gramps. But nothing you do, nothing you say, nothing ''I'' say or do will change the fact that I'm ''his'' son.
-->''(Garp looks down in shame)''
-->'''Luffy''': I'm not saying it would happen right away. It might take weeks; it might take months. Hell, it might be years. But sooner or later, they'll start to think it. That I'm a sleeper agent. Or that I'm leaking information. Or that my [[PrecisionFStrike goddamn]] blood is just dirty. And it wouldn't matter if I was the Commander-in-Chief when it happened. They would kill me without a second thought, 'for the good of the world'. And there wouldn't be anything I could do to defend myself. For my ''sin'', is ''existing''.
-->'''Garp''': ''(shaking his head in denial)'' No, no, they wouldn't do that!
-->'''Luffy''': ''(hardening his heart)'' Baterilla! ''(Garp looks up in shock)'' Based on the rumor of a rumor, Marines spent over a year scouring the island for a sign, any at all, of a child of the Pirate King. Pregnant women were kidnapped to be put through blood tests. Infants were put through the most invasive, comprehensive battery of exams available. Any who resisted were executed. And if they ''had'' found such a child, he would have been ''murdered'' in his cradle. In the ''womb''. This is how much stock the Government puts in a person's bloodline. Do you deny it?
-->'''Garp''': ''(fighting tears of anger, frustration, and guilt)'' Luffy, you fool! I thought of all that! I cleared everything with Sengoku! You would have had a fair chance!
-->'''Luffy''': Ah, but Sengoku isn't the top of the food chain, is he? Even he must bow to orders from Kong or the Gorosei. And it's not like he'll be Fleet Admiral forever. Can you imagine how ''Sakazuki'' would react to news of ''his'' son in the Marine ranks? His first order after being promoted would be my death warrant.
-->'''Garp''': Luffy, Kong's a good man. And I know people don't always understand why they do what they do, but the Gorosei are ''just''. They wouldn't kill you just because—
-->'''Luffy''': Ohara. And Nico Robin. ''(smiles sadly at Garp's surprise)'' The Voice told me a lot, Gramps.
-->'''Garp''': Sakazuki isn't the only one who could take Sengoku's place! He might never find out!
-->'''Luffy''': Ah, yes. I might be spared from 'Absolute Justice.' But that doesn't mean I'm safe. Kuzan and his 'Lazy Justice' would wait a decade after he heard the truth, but eventually he would act. And with that 'Unclear Justice' of Borsalino's, he might not even go for me. He would go for Dadan and Foosha for not lynching me when I was young. ''(shakes his head)'' I'm sorry, Gramps. I know you believe in redemption, but your superiors don't. They only understand corruption. And there's not a single future where if I became a Marine I would not die.
-->'''Garp''': ''(desperately)'' Luffy...
-->'''Luffy''': I like to think I'm a decent guy, Gramps. But I'm not so selfless as to knowingly go to my death just so I might be able to save people. So, if the path of a Marine was barred from me, what else could I do? How could I live my life, in a world that does not want me to survive? ''(grins)'' That's when I remembered an old dream.
-->'''Garp''': No...don't say it...
-->'''Luffy''': I WILL BECOME THE PIRATE KING!
* [[spoiler:CoveredWithScars]]: Zoro is re-introduced without his large chest scar of course, nor does he re-gain it. However, [[spoiler:the fight with Mihawk leaves him with ''lots'' of smaller scars on his body]].
* CruelToBeKind: Luffy’s reasoning for the Training From Hell he puts the new recruits of the Armada through; they need to be much stronger to take on the Grand Line.
* CurbStompBattle: Most of the fights in the fic are so much this that calling them “battles” is probably a stretch.
** Luffy vs. the Alvida Pirates.
** Luffy vs. Morgan
** Straw Hats vs. Black Cats
** Luffy vs. Don Krieg
** Gin vs. Kuroobi
** Buggy vs. Hachi
** Jango vs. Chew
** Nami vs. Arlong
** Zoro vs. Tashigi
** Luffy vs. Smoker
* DeathByAdaptation:
** Out of necessity, Luffy kills Don Krieg.
** Zoro kills [[spoiler:Mihawk at the end of their duel.]]
** Too much dawdling before going to take out Arlong results in the deaths of [[spoiler:Chabo and Genzo]].
* [[spoiler:DuelToTheDeath: Zoro and Mihawk. You get one guess as to who survived it.]]
* DumbassNoMore: Luffy is abused into being much smarter in this fic as part of his Training from Hell under Garp.
* EvenEvilHasStandards:
** Nami willingly gives a large sum of money to Ririka in Shells Town, enough to pay for their meal twice over at least. As the author puts it, “She might be parsimonious and greedy to a fault, but she’d always have a soft spot for mothers and people who were oppressed.”
** Buggy is appalled at Nami’s interest rates, and cries for the tragedy that Gaimon went through with the empty chests.
* ExactWords: Invoked by Luffy to trick his grandfather into training him, stretching the truth to the breaking point.
* {{Fanon}}: Although off-handedly, sometimes the author mentions elements that while never explicitly explained in-canon, have been taken more-or-less for granted by fans. One is when Whitebeard is introduced, and "diluted giant blood that's common in the Grand Line" is mentioned as the cause for his massive size despite technically still being a human.
* HiddenDepths
** Nami trains a few members of the Armada in navigation. Among them Buchi of the Nyaban Brothers, a character you'd usually associate with DumbMuscle, who proves a surprisingly good student.
** Once shed of his arrogance in combat, Pearl of the Krieg pirates shows a frail side, as his fear of blood and consequent tendency [[IncendiaryExponent to set things on fire]] can become a severe hindrance when he fights in a team.
* KilledOffForReal:
** Luffy [[spoiler:uses a Shigan to piece Don Krieg’s heart, armor and all]].
** Zoro [[spoiler:defeats and kills Mihawk]].
* IHeardThat: Chapter 5:
-->'''Jango''': And I thought that afro jack-in-the-box was weird.
-->'''Gaimon''': I heard that!
* IResembleThatRemark: In Chapter 9, after Usopp complains about planning out their docking at Loguetown, and Nami points out that it's necessary since "a certain idiot decided to expand our operation", Luffy says this.
* ItsQuietTooQuiet: Buggy says this word for word when they arrive at Syrup Village. And that's before he gets any indication at all that Usopp booby-trapped the entire beach.
* JawDrop: Frequent, but then, this ''is'' a One Piece fic.
** When Luffy one-shots one of Alvida’s lackeys, sending him flying through the walls of the ship and out into the horizon, Coby and the other two lackeys have this reaction.
** When Luffy responds to Alvida’s FairestOfThemAll question with the truthful answer of Boa Hancock, Coby gapes at his gall at not answering Alvida. It grows further when he blatantly insults her.
** Helmeppo, Coby, and Ririka have this reaction when Luffy uses his Haki to knock out the Marines flanking Helmeppo. Coby’s continues when he one-shots Helmeppo.
** Morgan’s underlings have this reaction when Luffy insults him and announces his intention to defeat him.
** Buggy’s three lackeys have this reaction when they announce their intention to rob them, and Luffy just laughs. Then they do it again after Zoro cuts one of their swords at the hilt.
** Buggy and his crew have this reaction when Luffy shows off Gear Third, and he only uses half of the normal amount of air.
** Under Even Evil Has Standards, Buggy is appalled at the interest rate Nami charges Luffy for repairs.
** Courtesy of his powers, Buggy’s jaw actually separates from his head when he hears that the Training From Hell that Luffy is putting his crew through was learned through firsthand experience with his grandfather. His crew has this reaction when they learn who said grandfather is.
** Many of the ones watching have this reaction when Luffy protects the Baratie chefs from Don Krieg. Or rather, after he catches all of the bullets that Krieg fires.
** The Baratie chefs have this reaction when Zeff announces that they'll be joining the Straw Hats, followed by cheering.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm:
** After Luffy one-shots one of the Alvida Pirates in an absurdly effective way, the two who witnessed it wisely decide to skedaddle.
** Sham and Buchi, after witnessing the fantastic Curb-Stomp Battle that decimates their crew in seconds, promptly throw themselves at Zoro’s feet and surrender.
* LaughingMad: When Dadan sees Luffy’s record-breaking bounty poster, she falls into a laughing fit that lasts at least 10 minutes.
* LetsGetDangerous: During the fight between [[spoiler:Zoro and Mihawk]], after a long period of superhuman blows back and forth, the combatants manage to draw blood from each other. Then Luffy states for the watchers' benefit that the combatants were no longer going to go easy on each other.
* LoanShark: Nami agrees to cover the damage dealt by Luffy’s demonstration of strength for “200% interest per week, with a bimonthly increase of 27% and a semi-annual fee of 2,500,000 Beri until completion.” Buggy is appalled.
* MoodWhiplash: Frequent in Chapter 5.
** A notable instance when Nami realizes that Luffy’s expecting her to pay for the armada, currently consisting of 219 people, to eat at the Baratie until he can convince Zeff to join them. She then faints from euphoria when Luffy promises that she can have One Piece if she does.
** Happens twice in a row with Patty. First his “pleasant” demeanor vanishes when he hears that the Straw Hats have 219 mouths to feed. Then it returns when Nami shows that they have enough money to pay for it.
** Sanji is reduced to a similar state as when he saw his wanted poster when he finds out that Kaya is Usopp’s girlfriend, and they prove it with a passionate kiss. He snaps out of that in a second when he’s called to the kitchen, instantly ready to serve.
* NeverSayThatAgain:
** In Chapter 2, when Luffy starts singing his islands song, Nami interrupts him with this after he starts the second verse.
** In Chapter 5, Luffy has this reaction on himself when he says “Listen up, me hearties!”
* NiceHat: Mihawk's. [[spoiler:And Zoro decides to wear it as a trophy.]]
* OfficialCouple: Usopp and Kaya.
** After an explanation in Chapter 4, Luffy is OK with this happening to him and Hancock.
* OriginalCharacter: Gin meets one in Loguetown that has a small but important role: a very old and enigmatic shipwright called Ohama, who is impressed by Gin's spirit and furnishes one of his finest ships for him and the Krieg pirates (they had stayed on the other ships of the fleet until then). His monologue after Jin leaves reveals that [[spoiler:he is Tom's master]].
* PromotedToLoveInterest: Hancock for Luffy, surprisingly. In fact, Luffy actually does like Hancock, he just didn't want to marry her before because he thought marriage meant having kids. Once Nami and Usopp clear this misunderstanding, he decides he can marry her, and has already implied he wants to.
* SecretKeeper: Kaya is the only one besides the original Straw Hats who knows about the time travel; Luffy has stated that they’ll tell the rest of the crew only when they start insisting.
* ShoutOut: Oh, so much. In chronological order:
** Vegapunk identifies his time machine as the [[Franchise/BackToTheFuture Flux Capacitor]].
** The three members of Buggy’s crew that they pick up en route to Orange Town introduce themselves as Moe, Larry, and Shemp, collectively known as Film/TheThreeStooges. The author even lampshades it:
-->'''Duncan''': (A/N: Yes, yes I did just do that)
** Nami mentions Literature/LordOfTheFlies once in Chapter 3.
** Luffy quotes The Charge of the Light Brigade in Chapter 4.
-->'''Duncan''': And yes, poetry was part of his training. Don’t ask why, you’re not ready.
** After falling down a pit that Usopp made as a booby trap, Moe quotes Lockhart from the film adaptation of Film/HarryPotterAndTheChamberOfSecrets:
-->'''Moe''': Really quite filthy down here.
** Usopp debuts much in the same way as [[Film/TheWizardOfOz Oz, the great and terrible.]]
** Usopp and Kaya, who have become a couple in this fic, refer to each other as [[Literature/TheGreatGatsby Gatsby and Daisy]].
** Kaya is once described as ‘unconsciously channeling the best healer of [[{{Manga/Bleach}} Soul Society]].’
** A Shout-Out to the 4Kids dub when Sanji sucks on lollipops instead of smoking while in the vicinity of the recovering [[spoiler:Zoro.]]
** The Black Cat Pirates.
*** Kuro references himself from the 4Kids dub of the video game ''One Piece Grand Battle''.
*** One is a short ginger-haired man named [[Disney/OliverAndCompany Oliver]].
*** Abraham, Giuseppe, Casey, O’Malley, Toulouse, and Berlioz are all taken from Disney/TheAristocats.
** Another one given to Film/TheWizardOfOz in Chapter 8, though much briefer.
** The other staff of the Syrup Village mansion are the staff from Disney/BeautyAndTheBeast.
** The Veggie Trio quotes [[Franchise/StarTrek The Borg]]’s iconic “Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.”
** Due to the ShockAndAwe with which Nami defeats Arlong, her epithet is changed to “[[Literature/PercyJacksonAndTheOlympians Lightning Thief]]. “
** Luffy's freakout when he realizes a furious and vengeful Garp is in Loguetown ends with "[[WesternAnimation/TheGrimAdventuresOfBillyAndMandy DESTROY US ALL! DESTROY US ALL! DESTROY US ALL! DESTROY US ALL!]]"
** When Cabaji remarks on how weird the armada is thus far and asks if it could get any weirder, Mohji replies that it could if they got an amorphous white creature with ADD and OCD that was a powerful RealityWarper and annoying enough to make the sun grimace. This, as well as the sun morphing, winking to the audience, and morphing back afterwards, is a clear reference to Manga/SoulEater.
** Alvida's description of herself after eating the Sube Sube no Mi comes directly from ''[[WesternAnimation/{{Shrek2}} Shrek 2]]'' after the eponymous ogre sees the result of him drinking the Happily Ever After potion.
** This line from Usopp in Chapter 10: "By the time I'm done with you, every one of you will have more gadgets and gizmos than [[{{Batman}} a billionaire vigilante with a flair for theatricality and some misplaced sense of self-righteousness]]."
** Perhaps unintentional, as it was muffled by distance, but when Usopp chastises the owner of a Queen Transponder Snail about neglecting the poor creature, said owner's speech is about as coherent as any given adult in the ComicStrip/{{Peanuts}} series.
** After Zoro wins his "fight" with Tashigi by disarming her with a knife hand:
-->'''Tashigi''': [[PiratesOfTheCaribbean You cheated!]]
-->'''Zoro''': [[PiratesOfTheCaribbean Pirate.]]
** Luffy compares Smoker to [[Franchise/LesMiserables Javert]].
* SomethingOnlyTheyWouldSay: How Luffy identifies to Nami and Usopp that he also remembers his past life.
* SpeakInUnison: Carrot, Pepper, and Onion, perpetually and perfectly. Usopp’s explanation:
-->'''Usopp''': I don’t know what happened. I think I made an off-hand comment about how speaking in unison is cool, and ever since they’ve been side characters in a horror story.
* SpitTake: Coby has this reaction when Luffy announces his intention to have Zoro join his crew…and said spit is directed at Nami. She’s not amused.
* TeamMom: Kaya becomes this for many of the new recruits, who see her as sort of an angel - an example is when she comforts Pearl after he gets injured. They are, however, absolutely crushed by learning she's Usopp's girlfriend, and Kaya herself doesn't allow them to lust after her.
* ThisIsGonnaSuck:
** For all of Luffy’s absolute resolve to be sure that he never has to go through a situation like the ambush again, he has this reaction at least once when he decides to gain that strength through training under his grandfather. Training From Hell, that is.
*** Likewise, he manages to successfully defuse his grandfather's anger towards him becoming a pirate after tricking him into training...by breaking his heart. Necessary though it is, Luffy doesn't enjoy it.
** Nami feels this way twice. First when she makes Luffy realize what will happen when the Marine catches wind of a New World-level crew of newbies in the East Blue, and he decides to go on with his plans anyway. The next time is when she realizes that, having [[spoiler:defeated Arlong all by herself and gotten a bounty that, while much lower than Luffy's, is currently the second highest in the crew will mean being targeted more strongly]].
* TookALevelInBadass:
** Luffy trained under Garp for 18 months after he was sent back. This means that not only is he at least as strong as when he entered the New World, but he has complete mastery of all three forms of Haki and the Rokushiki (Six Powers) techniques, and most blatantly, he’s much smarter.
** Zoro, employing both Koshiro and Mihawk’s teachings, is no less powerful than he was in the New World when he rejoins the crew. The proof of this is shown most of all when [[spoiler:he duels Mihawk again at the Baratie, and wins.]]
** Usopp’s cowardice has been significantly diminished with his future experiences; not only has he grown so skilled in fighting that he could easily have decimated the Black Cats on his own (though with tactics and traps; he’s strong, but he’s still the weakest of the crew), but he worked up the courage to get closer to Kaya, and they’ve become a couple.
* TookALevelInKindness: Alvida. Luffy gave her a small TheReasonYouSuckSpeech laced with Conqueror's Haki before sending her flying, and she took it to heart ''hard,'' becoming a humble good Samaritan up until she meets Luffy again and joins his crew. Heck, even after she eats the Sube Sube no Mi, she only cares about what she looks like inside.
* TooManyBabies: The reason Luffy didn't want to marry Boa Hancock? He thought it meant having kids due to a lack of sex education, and he didn't want to leave them like his dad, Ace's dad and Usopp's dad. After Usopp and Nami clear this up for him, he decides he does want to marry Hancock and even considers making a nursery for the Thousand Sunny.
* TrainingFromHell:
** The Straw Hats had to go through serious training over the three years before they’d meet again in order to get back to New World strength. Luffy’s is the most explicit.
** And then they put all of the new recruits through similar vigorous training as well.
* UnstoppableRage:
** Garp, from the moment he sees Luffy's wanted poster. Luffy senses it with his Haki an hour away from Loguetown, and is downright terrified.
** When Usopp finds a Queen Transponder Snail that he can buy, he's overjoyed. When he finds that the creature itself is emaciated, he's ''furious,'' and promptly shouts the owner into parting with the downright ''priceless'' animal for free.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: Where Nami seems to keep all of her cash. And there’s a lot of it.
* VillainousBreakdown: Kuro gets a big one. [[spoiler:Like Kaya's relationship with Usopp wasn't an obstacle already (see the AngstWhatAngst entry), upon "first" meeting him the Strawhats make him nervous with cat-related jokes. As he shows up on the shore the next day, witnessing how his crew has been quickly defeated, he already lets out that he wanted to kill them anyway. He is then confronted by a Luffy that's way out of his league, completely losing any cool left until [[CurbStompBattle Luffy one-shots him]]]].
