* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: How does Celestia get Nav back for working with the griffons and ruining one her of long-running plans? Award him a [[RainbowPimpGear ridiculous set of armor]] during an extravagant award ceremony, which everyone else treats as a huge honour.

* FantasyContraception: There's a unicorn spell for this purpose, but Nav generally has little need for it for [[InterspeciesRomance obvious reasons]]. It's not actually needed when [[VoluntaryShapeshifting casting the shapeshifting spell]] either since, it doesn't ''completely'' change your original species at the genetic level, but no one seems aware of this.

* GrievousHarmWithABody: Trixie tries to hurt Nav by hurling Twilight at him in Chapter 5, but misses.

* RainbowPimpGear: Navarone gets granted a set of technicolour armour to go with his title of ''Defender of Harmony''. Ostensibly it's a huge honour, but in reality it's a [[CoolAndUnusualPunishment form of revenge]] by Celestia due to him ruining one of her plans.

** Nav gives one to Pinkie in Chapter 47 to quite literally get her to shut up, rather than it being romantic in any way. It also makes a good distraction so he can escape.

* BigWhat: Twilight's reaction upon learning Nav is about to challenge a crazy unicorn who just threatened him...

While he doesn't exactly demand the respect of others, he does point out to Celestia that he doesn't have much reason to stay in Equestria where a large amount of the population fears him, when he could go elsewhere and live like a king. In several cases, quite literally.

* ShipperOnDeck: Multiple characters repeatedly try to ship Navarone with Fluttershy, as much as he tries to get them to stop.

* SlippingAMickey: Nav ends up being drugged at a bar and wakes up in a pile of mares. While unhappy about this, he shrugs it off and prefers not to know exactly what happened, and his friends end up being far more upset about this than he is.

* TearsOfRemorse: Celestia at one point breaks down and admits to Nav how [[TheChainsOfCommanding tired she is of being in charge]] after he places her in an impossible position, and having learned what she's inadvertently done to him it reduces her to some of her first tears in living memory.

* AffectionateGestureToTheHead: Nav does it from time to time, both as a gesture of friendship and affection, or when he's being particularly condescending.

After the princesses figure out how to reverse this, the spell gets used several times throughout the story. * AsHimself: An in-universe example at the dream party in Chapter 86. Several of the most attractive mares in Equestria have given permission for their forms to be used as part of the [[BikiniBar entertainment]], but Sapphire Shores, Cadance, and Spitfire are all secretly playing themselves.

** Blueblood was sent to a foreign social function in Paris after Celestia and Luna were unable to make it, where he continues to be his usual self. [[spoiler: Up until someone [[TamperingWithFoodAndDrink tries to poison him]] at any rate]].
* TheAtoner: Luna [[HeelRealization eventually shows remorse]] for what she's done to Nav and publicly confesses what she's done and apologises to him in a press conference.

* AddedAlliterativeAppeal: Many of the various festivals Nav attends or hears about tend to make extensive use of alliteration. Nav of course [[LampshadeHanging mocks this]].

* AllMythsAreTrue: [[Literature/TheBible Cain]] is responsible for the creation of Discord, and according to WordOfGod, a large number of human myths are true. In particular, {{Merlin}} was the last human mage.

** The Equestrian ambassadors to Egypt are hardly paragons of diplomacy and etiquette, given that they've been ReassignedToAntarctica. Emerald Script isn't too bad, but Calix is so unpleasant and nasty that Nav has him murdered before he can jeopardize matters.

* {{Determinator}}: Nav survives the campaign in Egypt pretty much entirely on this, and attributes [[HeroicResolve the willpower]] due his desire to avoid Spike getting hurt while he's being used as a hostage.

* TheScapegoat: Passing things off as a magical mishap of Twilight's is often used when a convenient excuse is needed. However what makes it such a believable excuse is the number of times Twilight has ''genuinely'' caused these.

* GroundhogDayLoop: Discord briefly puts himself through one of sorts during the prologue, as part of his attemps to convince Celestia. Every time he says something wrong he wipes her memory and starts from the beginning, and mentions to having gone through hundreds of loops until he succeeds.

** CompleteImmortality: Discord comes extremely close to this. [[spoiler: His main goal is to end it]].

* YouShallNotPass: Celestia's guards try to stop Nav from walking into Celestia's after Luna {{Mind Rape}}s him. Nav beats them up, and they deny that they tried to stop him the following morning.

Set many years into the future on an AlternateUniverse version of [[EarthAllAlong Earth]], this DarkerAndEdgier take on Equestria starts with a certain chimera breaking free from his stone prison. Quickly forcing Celestia into [[DealWithTheDevil making a deal]] with him to spare her ponies from destruction -- and making sure one of the terms is that she forgets the deal even existed in the first place -- he also ensures the summoning of [[ArchEnemy the one person]] the God of Chaos truly despised, as part of a ploy to ''finally'' bring his long-term plan to fruition, and gain the ultimate revenge on the one who ruined it all those many years ago.

Currently striving to be one of the [[{{Doorstopper}} longest fanfics out there]], it can be found [[http://www.fimfiction.net/story/45860/diaries-of-a-madman here]]. Oh, and just be sure to take a break [[ArchiveBinge once in a while]].

* {{Doorstopper}}: At over 1.3 million words long, the story is currently the largest on [=FIMFiction.net=] and no way near being complete. For reference, this is longer than any officially published book, and only a few fanfics have a higher word count.

A much DarkerAndEdgier take on Equestria, ''Diaries of a Madman'' starts with Discord breaking free of his stone prison, where he quickly proves himself to be much older and wiser than his show counterpart. After forcing Celestia to enter into a deal with him to save her subjects -- and making sure one of the terms is that she forgets making it -- Discord then introduces Navarone, a fairly regular guy trying to make his way in the world.

Appearing to be pulled from his home by a summoning experiment of Twilight's gone wrong, we follow our protagonist on his adventures through Equestria, as he deals with far more violence and evil than he expected from the seemingly peaceful world of ponies. Along with a few interjections from the resident Lord of Chaos.

Currently striving to be one of the [[{{Doorstopper}} longest fanfics out there]], it can be found [[http://www.fimfiction.net/story/45860/diaries-of-a-madman here]], though readers should beware that it is very dark in places.

* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: Humanity did this twice, once when trying to save itself from Discord by putting some humans into stasis, and again when creating the other races, as well as providing the elementals to protect and guide them.

* ItAmusedMe: Celestia, who tries to alleviate some of her boredom in this way. Navarone can sometimes engage in this as well, often in response to Celestia's antics.

** [[spoiler: Trixie's]] attempts to cast a spell on Twilight and Nav backfire completely, destroying her horn.

* RainbowPimpGear: Navarone gets granted a set of technicolour armour to go with his title of "Defender of Harmony". Ostensibly it's a huge honour, but in reality it's a [[CoolAndUnusualPunishment form of revenge]] by Celestia due to him ruining one of her plans.

** Shining Armor is probably the most unambiguously good character in the story, and dedicated to making sure everyone receives justice, regardless of their rank. He does take part in a black op to remove a dangerous criminal from power at one point, mostly because it's the right thing (rather than being in it for the large monetary reward), and actually finds it wrong when Nav comes up with an easy shortcut because it means he earns his side of the reward with very little work.

* InnocentInnuendo: Nav's interactions with Ames usually result in copious amounts of this.

* InSeriesNickname: Nav is [[OnlyKnownByTheirNickname only known by his]], and sometimes gets called Navi by Pinkie, which he hates. Celestia gets referred to by the [[BlatantLies extremely respectful nickname]] of "sunbutt" on several occasions, for reasons you can probably deduce.

** Discord also becomes this for Nav, [[spoiler: when he discovers the former is responsible for the extinction of humanity]].

* KissingUnderTheInfluence: Cadance recklessly firing off love magic leads to a bunch of palace staff and guards doing this... including Celestia. Few are happy with the results. And those few are usually paired up with others who are not!
* KissOfTheVampire: Vamponies don't have to do this in order to feed, but can play this one straight if they wish. [[spoiler: Nav ends up asking Midnight Blossom for one as a going away present in exchange for allowing her to feed off him]].
* KneelBeforeFrodo: Standard practice for ponies whenever Celestia makes an appearance. Nav flat out refuses to bow down to anyone and claims this is a cultural thing for humans, which sends Twilight into a fit. Apparently the fact that Celestia actually would prefer it if others didn't do this is lost on her.

* LastOfHisKind: Navarone is the last remaining human. [[spoiler: Later on his transformations render him only partially human, and when he discovers that he's no longer human enough to qualify he becomes somewhat depressed, since it now means humanity is completely extinct]].

* LovesTheSoundOfScreaming: Kat, something which Navarone finds extremely creepy.

* MetaphoricallyTrue: Celestia does this occasionally. Nav does it far more often, when he's not resorting to BlatantLies instead.

** Averted on the subject of attraction; even after being turned into a pony himself, Nav does not find them appealing.

** Pinkie Pie and Rarity deeply regret [[YouNeedToGetLaid their actions towards Navarone]] and come to consider it the worst mistake they've ever made.

** Luna also does this, to rather horrifying levels.

* NoNameGiven: Naga do not use their clan names when in the presence of outsiders. As a result, [[spoiler: Ames]] is often addressed as simply "Naga" by Navarone unless they're in private.

* OddFriendship: Odd doesn't even ''begin'' to describe the relationship between Nav and Celestia. While several elements of their personality are NotSoDifferent, she's a pony princess and the most politically powerful ruler on the planet, he's a fairly average [[DeadpanSnarker snarky]] human -- though he manages to obtain a surprisingly large amount of political power and wealth -- and often gets used as a pawn in Celestia's many schemes. Half of their interactions find them on opposing ends of an argument, or dealing with the fallout of something or another. Even the ''definition'' of friendship you'd use to describe all this would be rather warped.

* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Navarone. Given his real name is [[spoiler: Anonymous]], it's quite understandable why he never uses it, and he's rather resentful of his parents over this.
* OnlySaneMan: Given the amount of craziness in the world, you could be forgiven for thinking Nav is the only one, and judging by his narration he certainly seems to think so, even if he's not the most impartial judge. Celestia might give him a run for his money, but otherwise there's a ''lot'' of crazy about.

* OurVampiresAreDifferent: Vamponies follow many of the standard vampire tropes, but are capable of going out in sunlight, albeit at the expense of being weakened and getting terrible headaches.

* PitySex: Nav sleeps with both princesses due to their loneliness and desire for some companionship (which is a lie in Luna's case since she's not over her infatuation with him). It ends up leading to Nav and Luna's brief [[InterspeciesRomance relationship]], and when that fails, a FriendsWithBenefits relationship with Celestia, though she attempts several times to go for a RelationshipUpgrade.

* PowerIncontinence: Taya almost accidentally kills Nav with a case of this when she gets overly stressed by Pinkie's sisters bothering her. It almost puts her off magic entirely, but Nav tells her that her abilities are a gift, and that she simply [[ComesGreatResponsibility needs to learn proper control]].

* RainbowPimpGear: Navarone gets granted a set of technicolour armour to go with his title of "Defender of Harmony". Ostensibly it's a huge honour, but in reality it's a form of revenge by Celestia due to him ruining one of her plans.

* TheExile: Nav effectively becomes one temporarily when he's sent to Egypt to take care of a situation for Celestia as punishment for committing a crime. Several others also end up being sent with him, but it's more a case of ReassignedToAntarctica since their position is more permanent.

** The miner later on in the story loses both his eyes to the unseen force haunting the mines. Thankfully this happens off-page, since it's already bad enough.

* FantasticDrug: A large amount of them. Alcohol appears to have similar effects on most species, but there are also species-specific drugs, such as salt (ponies), catnip ([[CatPeople guess]]), and chocolate (diamond dogs).

* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: Humanity did this twice, once when trying to save itself from Discord by putting some humans into stasis, and again when creating the other races, and the elementals to protect and guide them.

** Celestia and Luna also briefly do it at one point.
** Nav and Taya end up being swapped by a magical mishap.

* FriendToAllChildren: Harming children is one of the few things that really angers Nav, and he usually goes out his way to look after them, albeit somewhat unwillingly. The best example would be when he first discovers Taya who he would later adopt as his daughter.

* FullNameBasis: Chrysalis often addresses others by their full name. Especially so when that other person is Pinkie Pie as a means of annoying her.

** Navarone stumbles across a pair of magical artifacts that change the user's gender upon touching them. It occasionally gets used for a disguise, but more often than not it ends up being used by interested parties for bedroom experimentation, or for practical jokes (or revenge).

* GenocideDilemma: This actually crops up twice for Nav, firstly when he helps the changelings in the aftermath of Cadance and Shining Armor's [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E25ACanterlotWeddingPart1 interrupted]] [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E26ACanterlotWeddingPart2 wedding]] to spare them, and later again when he works with the changelings to destroy a diamond dog clan. Despite trying to argue for peace in the latter example, he helps the changelings when this proves to be impossible, though he's disgusted with his part in it.

* GiantFlyer: The "giant moth thing" Nav gets attacked by.
* TheGlomp: Due to the strength disparity, many of the times a pony tries to hug Nav turn into this.

* GoLookAtTheDistraction: Attempting to escape from Pinkie generally does not work well, but rather bizarrely this does.

* HappilyAdopted: While it's difficult to suggest either is particularly happy given what they've gone through, Taya clearly loves Navarone and vice versa. Even if he constantly fears he's a terrible parent and that Taya has dependency issues.

* HealingHands: Many of the unicorns/alicorns Nav deals with on a regular basis have at least some proficiency at this, particularly the more powerful ones like Twilight and Taya. It was actually Celestia's original calling, and she at one point expresses deep regret and anger that Discord's actions made this impossible for her.

* HiddenVillain: Discord sets the entire story in motion and influences events behind the scenes, but none of the main characters are aware of his actions or presence. [[spoiler: Except for Taya, later in the story]].

* HumanityIsSuperior: Despite the advantages ponies have over humans -- notably strength and magic -- Nav strongly believes that human society is far better, and he's certainly right to believe it on the technological front. To the point where his relatively limited knowledge of technology and science (though good for his age and level of education) is able to kickstart a technological revolution in changeling society, and sets in motion a dramatic altering of the balance of power between the races.

* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Both Navarone and Celestia show this, more often the former, and there are many times where both regret the necessity of their actions.

* CombatPragmatist: Navarone doesn't just fight dirty, he actively shows his contempt for honourable fighting on multiple occasions. Given the number of times it would have gotten him killed, it's hard to argue.

* ConsummateLiar: Discord. Nav is also fairly skilled, but not quite as good as he thinks he is.

** Discord's entire plan involves Nav being one of these, and he later does it to several other characters to suit his own ends.

* CursedWithAwesome: All over the place. Navarone's wings and magically gained abilities. Celestia and Luna's agelessness. Especially so with Discord...

* CulturedWarrior: Despite Rarity tending to berate him for his lack of manners and sophistication, Nav is familiar enough with many classical works to be able to transcribe them (or their main outline) from memory. And then [[PlagiarismInFiction selling those for profit]].

* DeathByIrony: Rather ''[[InvertedTrope Life]]'' by Irony. [[spoiler: When Nav gets sent back in time, he inadvertently ruins Discord's plans to kill himself. Discord does at least appreciate the irony of managing to ultimately ruin his own plan]].

* DeathSeeker: [[spoiler: Discord]].

* DopeSlap: Nav does it to Spike whenever he does something particularly silly. Others sometimes return the favour by cuffing him with their wings, or just flat out kicking him instead.

* DreamWalker: Nav eventually learns how to do this as part of his duties as Luna's knight.
* DressingAsTheEnemy: Used when Nav infiltrates the slave ship in Chapter 26. Though as it's crewed by cats and dogs, his disguise is pretty much limited to him also being bipedal, and wearing enough clothing to obscure the fact that he's a human (and that he has wings).

* EatingTheEyeCandy: At the Grand Galloping Gala in the revised Chapter 10, Nav (in pegasus form) gets eaten up, both by Luna, and also many of the noblemares attending.
* EmergencyTransformation: An unintentional example. After almost being killed in a magical accident, Celestia and Luna have to infuse Nav with life force taken from elsewhere in order to save him, in this case from a tree. As a consequence he's no longer fully human and ends up gaining several plant-like characteristics.
* EmotionEater: Changelings are capable of feeding off all emotions in this version of Equestria, though most prefer love. They can also feed off memories, though they are less satisfying than the real thing, with the exception of human memories which are as nutritious as raw emotions, since due to differences in psychology humans attach emotions to memories more so than other species.

* EthicalSlut: Navarone doesn't have many rules, but he will refuse to get involved with married couples, and won't have anything to do with any mare in heat who hasn't previously expressed any interest in him.

* ActionGirl: While the Mane 6 are already this in canon, it particularly applies to Pinkie Pie here. Kumani, Kat, and Taya also quality.

* AmbiguousGender: [[spoiler: During their trip back in time, Nav suggests this will be an issue for Rainbow in her attempts to score, since while he's used to ponies and can easily tell the difference, others are not]].

* AnAxeToGrind: Nav gets a rather nice one when he takes up the role of a Lunar knight. This is then subverted when he [[AwesomeButImpractical refuses to use it]], and continues using weapons he's acquired some proficiency in.
* AndYourRewardIsClothes: Nav's reward for saving Cadance and her daughter's life. Well, armour. A ''really'' [[RainbowPimpGear garish set of armour]]. And technically it's [[CoolAndUnusualPunishment a punishment]] dressed up as a reward.

** Celestia shows traits of this on occasion. While generally caring and good, she's also not above acting immorally when the need arises, or she's especially bored.
* AntiMagic: Navarone's anti-magic ring, which is extremely helpful since most magic users rely too much on their magic, and he has no natural defense against it.
* ArchEnemy: Changelings and diamond dogs have an extreme mutual hatred of each other.
* ArrangedMarriage: After Nav and Luna cause a scandal, Bloodbeak finds a way of forcing Nav and Gilda to marry in order to take advantage politically, as well as benefiting from Nav's knowledge. Nav eventually finds a way out, but helps Bloodbeak anyway. Later Bloodbeak tries to set him up with his daughter, ''Princess'' Gilda, but neither were keen on the idea to begin with.

** [[AssInAmbassador Calix]] was a very unpleasant pony, to say this least, and while his behaviour would have jeopardized their mission, this probably didn't warrant the extreme step of Nav murdering him.

* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: One of the changeling hives at one point gets attacked by giant ants. It's as unpleasant as it sounds.
* AuthorityInNameOnly: Nav dismisses Cadance as this at first, but she later becomes a useful ally of his, and demonstrates far more political skill and power than he initially gives her credit for.

* BarbieDollAnatomy: The fact that this ''isn't'' kept from the original source material is alluded to a few times. [[GodivaHair Tails]] apparently serve as a very convenient SceneryCensor for the most part, but it's safe to say that Equestrian standards of modesty and privacy differ from that of most human cultures. Strangely, when (a somewhat out of his mind) Nav points out that from a certain angle, ''nothing'' is left to the imagination, Twilight is extremely embarrassed.

** Celestia and Luna have a spell for this purpose, which deeply angers Nav when he finds out. Blocking this spell is one of the main uses of his AntiMagic ring, after he stumbles across it.

* BiTheWay: Nav emphatically insists he isn't this, and doesn't normally show any interest in his own gender. It's more a case of him becoming increasingly depraved and quite literally saying "fuck it".
* BizarreHumanBiology: Nav starts off as a regular human, but after a combination of events ends up being stuck with the wings of a pegasus in human form (albeit larger than normal, since he has less magic and so requires larger wings for lift, as well as being far slower in the air), and gains several plant-like characteristics as a result of his EmergencyTransformation. Ultimately he gets changed so much that he's not biologically human, even if he ''mostly'' resembles one externally.

** Chrysalis takes great delight in slaughtering a diamond dog clan.

* [[CantArgueWithElves Can't Argue with Ponies]]: Ponies hold themselves to be superior than the other races, though this attitude is especially prevelant amongst the nobles. Nav is quite willing to [[ScrewYouElves call others out]] on this.
