* [[invoked]]MemeticSexGod: Some of Navarone's exploits end up giving him a legendary reputation. Rather unfairly for him however, several of these events are caused by factors completely outside his control, rather than willing actions on his part.

* {{Retcon}}: A few of them, as the author modifies anything he's particularly unhappy about in earlier installments.

** [[AssInAmbassador Calix]] was a very unpleasant pony, to say this least, and while his behaviour would have jeprodized their mission, this probably didn't warrant the extreme step of Nav murdering him.

* BerserkButton: Nav might not have [[TheHedonist many]] [[ReallyGetsAround standards]] left as the story goes on, but assuming he has ''none whatsoever'' is a good way of making him livid with anger, as AJ finds out firsthand. Viewing him as weak and helpless is another. And start running for your life if you target those who can't fight back.

** The Dreamlands operate in this way, as you might expect given that it's a dreamworld, and Nav shows a very high degree of control over this when he visits there.

* TakeAThirdOption: After Nav quits as Luna's knight following the complete breakdown of their relationship, Celestia offers Nav the chance to be an Umbral knight -- which comes with some very useful perks -- instead of binding himself to either of the royal sisters. Nav himself takes a third option by putting the offer on hold, rather than accepting or rejecting it.

* DealWithTheDevil: Celestia's initial deal with Discord in the prologue.

* TheFarmerAndTheViper: After Nav infiltrates a slave ship and helps free them, he's almost killed by an overly cautious unicorn, though the remaining slaves immediately stop her and are very grateful to him.

* InterruptedIntimacy: It occurs several times, though there are occasions where Nav chooses to ignore said interruption.

* YouCanRunButYouCantHide: Any unicorn that is already attuned to someone after having teleported them can do this, though most have a distance limitation due to the magical power required. Celestia threatens Nav with this at one point, telling him that at full power she can teleport him to her from anywhere in the world. It's only when Nav gets his AntiMagic ring that this threat becomes nullified.

* ScienceMarchesOn: An in-universe example. [[spoiler: When Nav gets sent back in time, [[SplitPersonality multiple personality disorder]] is no longer viewed as a mental illness. Or at least, not quite so strictly]].

* BloodLust: Luna, quite literally. Her combining this with her MindRape of Nav ends up being the final straw and causes him to break off their relationship. After he's run out the room screaming in terror.

* AmericanAccents: Similar to AJ, Nav has a southern drawl but his only becomes particularly pronounced when he's feeling particularly frustrated or upset.

* AuthorityInNameOnly: Nav initially dismisses Cadance as this, but she later becomes a useful ally of his, and demonstrates far more political skill and power than he initially gives her credit for.

* ShoutOut: There's a lot of them, many of which in the form of Nav making references to pop culture which fly over the heads of everyone else.

* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Shining Armor is probably the most unambigiously good character in the story, and dedicated to making sure everyone receives justice, regardless of their rank. He does take part in a black op to remove a dangerous criminal from power at one point, mostly because it's the right thing (rather than being in it for the large monetary reward), and actually finds it wrong when Nav comes up with an easy shortcut because it means he earns his side of the reward with very little work.

* TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody: When Nav first gets turned into a pony, his lack of familiarity with the instincts that come with that renders him particularly vulnerable to [[SmellsSexy pony pheromones]]. This can be negated through magic or experience however.

* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: Nav often manages to get away with breaking laws because of his connection with Celestia... and because she finds him far too useful to have him imprisoned. She does however often end up using non-standard punishments, usually helping her out with some unpleasant task.

* YouShallNotPass: Celestia's guards try to stop Nav from walking into Celestia's after Luna {{MindRape}}s him. Nav beats them up, and they deny that they tried to stop him the following morning.

* CassandraTruth: Twilight (and by proxy, Celestia) refuse to accept Nav's tales of human technology and dismiss them as impossible stories or exaggeration.

* FauxHorrific / LightmareFuel: When Shining Armor tries to break into Nav's mind yet again, Nav gives him a choice between two doors in Nav's mindscape. Shining ends up picking the door that leads to all of Nav's memories of being tortured and abused, to which Nav comments was a fortunate choice since the other door [[spoiler: led to the memories of him having sex with Celestia]]. Where exactly the latter falls on the scale is left somewhat ambiguous.

** Celestia makes everyone present agree to never say anything of what happened [[KissingUnderTheInfluence between her and Pinkie]] after Cadance recklessly started firing spells off

* SmugSnake: Discord constantly does it. Given how powerful he is to the point where he dwarfs Celestia and Luna, he does have some justification for his attitude, and he often uses it to manipulate others into acting how he wants.

* BedmateReveal: Nav at one point wakes up to find Rainbow Dash in his bed, and is rather disturbed until Flo reassures him that nothing happened, and they'd just been drunkenly wrestling before passing out.

** The miner later on in the story loses both his eyes to the unseen force haunting the mines. Thankfully this happens off-page, since it's already [[NightmareFuel bad enough]].

* WhatDidIDoLastNight: [[spoiler: Ames]] is horrified when he finds out [[HotSkittyOnWailordAction exactly what happened]]. The reader [[BrainBleach might well agree]] with this assessment.

** Rarity and Pinkie Pie believe the same thing about Navarone. Unfortunately [[MindRape their way of going about this]]...

* ButYouScrewOneGoat: One of Eva's personalities, "Mirror", claims to have been forced into this due to the lack of food available, though she's far more enthusiastic than you'd otherwise expect. Nav and Flo are suitably freaked when they find out, and try their best [[BrainBleach to forget they ever saw anything]].

* CooldownHug: Often used, particularly towards Nav.

* EmotionEater: Changelings are capable of feeding off all emotions in this version of Equestria, though most prefer love. They can also feed off memories, though they are less satisfying than the real thing, with the exception of human memories which are as nutritious as raw emotions for reasons as of yet unexplained.

* EyeScream: Nav nails a Mook right in the eye with a throwing knife at one point.

* KangarooCourt: Celestia has Rarity and Navarone convicted of treason, simply to see what would happen [[ItAmusedMe because she was bored]].

* LetUsNeverSpeakOfThisAgain: Nav and the Naga agree to this regarding a [[HotSkittyOnWailordAction certain incident]] that took place after a night of drinking.

* NoNameGiven: Naga do not use their clan names when in the presense of outsiders. As a result, [[spoiler: Ames]] is often addressed as simply "Naga" by Navarone unless they're in private.

* ChickMagnet: Nav ends up getting quite a lot of positive attention... and not just from the females.
* ClapYourHandsIfYouBelieve: The Dreamlands operate in this way, as you might expect given that it's a dreamworld, and Nav shows a very high degree of control over this when he visits there.

* DontYouDarePityMe: Nav hates this so much that he leaves Equestria completely when [[spoiler: the truth about Luna's crimes against him comes out]].

* BiTheWay: Nav insists he emphatically isn't this, and doesn't normally show any interest in his own gender. It's more a case of him becoming increasingly depraved and quite literally saying "fuck it".

* ButYouScrewOneGoat: One of Eva's personalities, "Mirror", ended up being forced into this due to the lack of food available. Nav and Flo are suitably freaked when they find out, and try their best [[BrainBleach to forget they ever saw anything]].

* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Nav, quite literally. His human form is nothing special, but his pony form is an exceptionally handsome pegasus, and gets a lot of positive attention from both genders.

* TheFarmerAndTheViper: After Nav infiltrates a slave ship and helps free them, he's almost killed by an ungrateful unicorn, though the remaining slaves immediately stop her and are very grateful to him.

* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: The night guard gives off this appearance due to enchantments Luna places on them. [[spoiler: The captain, Midnight Blossom, is the only one to play this straight however]].

* LeaningOnTheFourthWall:
** Nav's true name of [[spoiler: Anonymous]] and his ridiculing of [[TakeThat how stupid this is]] can be seen as one, given the number of fanfics where this is used without irony as the protagonist's name.

A much DarkerAndEdgier take on ''Friendship is Magic'', ''Diaries of a Madman'' starts with Discord breaking free of his stone prison, where he quickly proves himself to be much older and wiser than his show counterpart. After forcing Celestia to enter into a deal with him to save her subjects -- and making sure one of the terms is that she forgets making the deal -- Discord then introduces Navarone, a fairly regular guy trying to make his way in the world.

Seemingly pulled from his home by an experiment of Twilight's gone wrong, we follow our protagonist on his adventures through Equestria, as he deals with far more violence and evil than he expected from the seemingly peaceful world of ponies. Along with a few interjections from the resident Lord of Chaos.

* LastOfHisKind: Navarone is the last remaining human. [[spoiler: Later on his transformations render him only partially human, and when he discovers that he's no longer human enough to qualify as human he becomes somewhat depressed]].

* ReallyGetsAround: Navarone ends up doing this as a coping mechanism for the psychological damage he suffers over the course of the story.

A being of ancient and unimaginable power, he forces Celestia to make a deal to save her little ponies. What she doesn't realize is that one of the terms of the deal is that she forgets ever making it. Enter Navarone, a poor human just trying to get by—or at least, to the ponies that's what he looks like. Pulled from his home by an accidental summoning from one Twilight Sparkle, Navarone is thrust into a world of ponies and more violence than he expected from such a peaceful seeming world. These are his adventures—with a few asides from everybody's favorite Lord of Chaos, of course.

She also ends up being extremely stressed when placed in impossible situations.

* CombatPragmatist: Navarone doesn't just fight dirty, he actively shows his contempt for honorable fighting on multiple occasions. Given the number of times it would have gotten him killed, it's hard to argue.

** As of the July 9, 2013 update, it's at about 1,150,000 words- about 50,000 short of being ''the longest book ever written.''

* DoingInTheWizard:
** [[spoiler: Flo is revealed to be comprised of nanomachines, a fact she was completely unaware of]].
** {{Inverted|Trope}} with Pinkie Pie, as her bizarre abilities are revealed to the reader as the product of "real magic", even if Pinkie and the rest of the cast are unaware of this.
* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale: Utterly averted. It causes extensive psychological damage to Navarone, and is taken very seriously as a crime in-universe.
