* AmbiguousGender: .

* AsHimself: An in-universe example at the dream party in Chapter 86. Several of the most attractive mares in Equestria have given permission for their forms to be used as part of the entertainment, but Sapphire Shores, Cadance, and Spitfire are all secretly playing themselves.
* AsleepForDays: Nav ends up asleep for a week after Taya nearly kills with a severe case of PowerIncontinence.

* BavarianFireDrill: Nav briefly employs this while infiltrating a slave ship and dressed as one of the crew. About to be caught with some freed slaves, he yells to an approaching Mook that the ship has been compromised and that he'll watch the slaves while the guy warns the crew.

* BrainsAndBondage: Both princesses are very much into this, but especially so with Celestia.

* CoolSword: Nav's InfinityPlusOneSword, which .

* DressingAsTheEnemy: Used when Nav infiltrates the slave ship in Chapter 26. Though as it's crewed by cats and dogs, his disguise is pretty much limited to him also being bipedal, and wearing enough clothing to obscure the fact that he's a human (and that he has wings).

* EntitledToHaveYou: Part of Luna's issues on this front stem from outdated protocols. The other half of this is because she's not exactly sane.

* FelonyMisdemeanor: Twilight seems to view not stacking books properly as an awful crime, and is more focused on that than the fact she's just been sucked into a PortalBook.

* FreeRangeChildren: Taya is allowed to go about with very minimal oversight. Cadance's repeated lectures to Nav over this do not go down well with him.

* TheGlomp: Due to the strength disparity, many of the times a pony tries to hug Nav turn into this.

* HeroicBSOD: Twilight has a small one upon killing something for the first time in Chapter 99. Unfortunately Nav is probably one of the worst possible choices to comfort her.
-->Flo: You are so bad at this.

* HorsingAround: Celestia does it to Nav after he invades one of her dreams, which gets a CallBack while he's desperately trying to keep his hold on a monster in Chapter 99.

* ImAHumanitarian: A variant, given the number of sapient species. Spike's growing desire for meat at one point causes him to ask Nav if he can eat some the corpses they run across. Nav quickly tells him to cut it out.

* InterplayOfSexAndViolence: Luna's idealised version of a good time, apparently. It does not Understatement end well.

* IntimateHealing: A platonic version where Nav lathers up Fluttershy to help her with her flea problem, since hooves are not the best tool for the job. It is extremely awkward however, and certainly not helped by Fluttershy's badly-hidden interest in him.

* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: After 5 years of escaping the consequences of her actions, Luna eventually starts to receive some recompense after publicly admitting her many wrongs.

* KingIncognito: After Nav is sent to negotiate with the leader of a Naga clan in Egypt, he ends up in a discussion with the sentry escorting him. Only after noticing that the politically-minded questions being asked are not those of a sentry does he realise who he's been talking to the entire time.

* LegendaryWeapon:
** Nav's InfinityPlusOneSword turns out to be .
** The Spear of Destiny is also mentioned briefly.

* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: The show already has a huge amount of characters. As well as keeping many of them, the story then adds far more on top.
* TheLoinsSleepTonight: Cadance and Shining Armor experience trouble in paradise after the birth of their daughter, and end up asking Nav for advice. Apparently said advice helps.

* invokedMemeticSexGod: Some of Navarone's exploits end up giving him a legendary reputation. Rather unfairly for him however, several of these events are caused by factors completely outside his control, rather than willing actions on his part.

Added DiffLines:

* MayflyDecemberRomance / MayDecemberRomance: Luna's interest in Nav starts off as the first, and turns into the second when his life expectency shoots up after his EmergencyTransformation. Celestia's interest in him also qualifies as this.

Added DiffLines:

* invokedMemeticSexGod: Some of Navarone's exploits end up giving him a legendary reputation. Rather unfairly for him however, several of these events are caused by factors completely outside his control, rather than willing actions on his part.

Added DiffLines:

* MindlinkMates: There's a unicorn spell for this which Luna tries on Nav at one point. Not being a unicorn and thus having no control over what happens in the environment, it ends badly for Nav. Very, very badly.

Added DiffLines:

* NaughtyUnderTheTable: Octavia tries for this at a party, but has already beaten her to it. Cue the awkwardness.

Added DiffLines:

* OnlySaneMan: Given the amount of craziness in the world, you could be forgiven for thinking Nav is the only one, and judging by his narration he certainly seems to think so, even if he's not the most impartial judge. Celestia might give him a run for his money, but otherwise there's a lot of crazy about.

Added DiffLines:

* OurVampiresAreDifferent: Vamponies follow many of the standard vampire tropes, but are capable of going out in sunlight, albeit at the expense of being weakened and getting terrible headaches.

Added DiffLines:

* ParentalNeglect: Part of Nav's backstory, and responsible for several of his issues.
* PhotographicMemory: Nav gains this while Flo shares his body, since she has this and can recall anything he's forgotten for him. Not that his memory was bad to begin with.
* PitySex: Nav sleeps with both princesses due to their loneliness and desire for some companionship (which is a lie in Luna's case since she's not over her infatuation with him). It ends up leading to Nav and Luna's brief relationship, and when that fails, a FriendsWithBenefits relationship with Celestia, though she attempts several times to go for a RelationshipUpgrade.

Added DiffLines:

* PortalBook: Twilight and Nav get sucked into one at the end of Chapter 98.
* PostVictoryCollapse: Nav tends to do so after his various Knife Fights with assassins.

Added DiffLines:

* SkewedPriorities: Having just been sucked into a PortalBook with Nav, how does Twilight react? By focusing on the fact that the books are all in piles instead of neatly stacked on the bookshelves. Nav isn't amused.
-->Twilight: But look at them! That’s terrible for them!

Added DiffLines:

* SoProudOfYou: A dark example, when Twilight first kills a monster in Chapter 99, and Nav hugs her out of pride while she's BSODing.

Added DiffLines:

* SquashedFlat: One of the results of dream logic, Nav's dreamwalking, and Celestia HorsingAround.

Added DiffLines:

* TearsOfRemorse: Celestia at one point breaks down and admits to Nav how tired she is of being in charge after he places her in an impossible position, and having learned what she's inadvertently done to him it reduces her to some of her first tears in living memory.

Added DiffLines:

* TrophyWife: Fairly common among the Canterlot nobility across both genders, and it used to be standard practice for the princesses to take a stallion as a platonic date to the Gala for this purpose.

Added DiffLines:

* The Mare Wearing the Queenly Mask: While the princesses are already this in canon, just how isolated and lonely they (and particularly Celestia) are by their position is brought up several times.

Currently striving to be one of the Doorstopper longest fanfics out there, it can be found here, though readers should beware that it is very dark in places. places.

* AlienBlood:
** Changeling blood is always green, and can be used to identify one regardless of the form they're currently taking.
** Nav's blood changes somewhat post EmergencyTransformation, taking on an amber hue and becoming far more viscous than regular human blood.

* AndYourRewardIsClothes: Nav's reward for saving Cadance and her daughter's life. Well, armour. A really garish set of armour. And technically it's a punishment dressed up as a reward.

* ArrangedMarriage: After Nav and Luna cause a scandal, Bloodbeak finds a way of forcing Nav and Gilda to marry in order to take advantage politically, as well as benefiting from Nav's knowledge. Nav eventually finds a way out, but helps Bloodbeak anyway. Later Bloodbeak tries to set him up with his daughter, Princess Gilda, but neither were keen on the idea to begin with.

** Calix was a very unpleasant pony, to say this least, and while his behaviour would have jeprodized their mission, this probably didn't warrant the extreme step of Nav murdering him.

to:

** Calix was a very unpleasant pony, to say this least, and while his behaviour would have jeprodized jeopardized their mission, this probably didn't warrant the extreme step of Nav murdering him.

* TheAtoner: Luna eventually shows remorse for what she's done to Nav and publicly confesses what she's done and apologises to him in a press conference.

* BadDreams: Nav suffers from them. Celestia also has nightmares of her own, one of which Nav wanders into at one point.

* BarbieDollAnatomy: The fact that this isn't kept from the original source material is alluded to a few times. Tails apparently serve as a very convenient SceneryCensor for the most part, but it's safe to say that Equestrian standards of modesty and privacy differ from that of most human cultures. Strangely, when (a somewhat out of his mind) Nav points out that from a certain angle, nothing is left to the imagination, Twilight is extremely embarrassed.

* BerserkButton: Nav might not have many standards left as the story goes on, but assuming he has none whatsoever is a good way of making him livid with anger, as AJ finds out firsthand. Viewing him as weak and helpless is another. And start running for your life if you target those who can't fight back.

Added DiffLines:

* ColdBloodedTorture: One of Kat's favourite pastimes. Nav ends up on the receiving end of it in Egypt, which doesn't exactly do wonders for his mental health.
* ColorCodedWizardry: Unicorn magic does this, but humans are the only species known to be capable of seeing it thus far. Twilight is extremely reluctant to accept this, but is eventually forced to... after running a bunch of tests of course.

Added DiffLines:

* CommonTongue: The Equestrian language is widely used throughout the world.

Added DiffLines:

* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: How does Celestia get Nav back for working with the griffons and ruining one her of long-running plans? Award him a ridiculous set of armor during an extravagant award ceremony, which everyone else treats as a huge honour.

Added DiffLines:

* CoolHorse: Nav briefly takes Celestia as his mount on one occasion after she annoys him. She's surprisingly into it, seemingly because it's the exact opposite of what a princess would do.
* CoolHouse: Nav's custom built fort, which was designed by the changelings and even comes with its own prototype electricity system, rather than being powered by magic like elsewhere.
* CoolOldGuy: Fancy Pants.

Added DiffLines:

* DeathGlare: Good luck trying to keep count of the number of times this occurs.

Added DiffLines:

* DirtyBusiness: Most of the tasks Celestia gives to Nav tend to involve this, but particularly the campaign in Egypt.

Added DiffLines:

* DopeSlap: Nav does it to Spike whenever he does something particularly silly. Others sometimes return the favour by cuffing him with their wings, or just flat out kicking him instead.

Added DiffLines:

* EvenEvilHasStandards:
** Discord has never killed (or at least, so he claims), though seeing as he readily admits to getting others indirectly killed, it's not exactly much of a standard for him to be proud of.
** Chrysalis is sickened by what Taya has had to live through, as well as some of the acts other races are capable of. This being someone who delights in genociding her hated enemies.

Added DiffLines:

* FurryReminder:
** Nav lampshades or explains many of the instances of this in his narration, which usually mirror the examples from the show.
** Gilda eats a worm at one point, which does not go down well with Cadance and Nav.
---> Cadance & Navarone: (disgusted stares)
---> Gilda: What? I’m half-bird, remember?

Added DiffLines:

* GiantFlyer: The "giant moth thing" Nav gets attacked by.

Added DiffLines:

* HeelRealization: It takes a long time, but Luna eventually comes to realize what she did to Nav, and expresses remorse for the wrongs she's committed upon him. As well as admitting all this quite extravagantly in a press conference.
* HellishPupils: Luna places an enchantment on her knights and the Night Guard that results in this, as well as dramatically improving their night vision.

Added DiffLines:

* HeterosexualLifePartners: Nav and Spike, despite the ridiculous innuendo that occasionally crops up between them. To the point that when Nav leaves Equestria, Spike chooses to go with him instead of remaining with Twilight.

Added DiffLines:

* Her Own Worst Enemy: Luna has some serious problems, but never really seems to stop and consider that she may be at fault, or that a change of behaviour is warranted. It is also implied that Celestia has been somewhat shielding her sister from all this, or otherwise indulging her, and she eventually comes to realise what she's done.
* HonorBeforeReason: Nav constantly lampshades how stupid this is when he comes across it, and particularly when he finds out at least one assassin's guild will only make a single hit, believing that surviving means the target has earned the right to live.
--> Why is honor such a big factor in this world?

Added DiffLines:

* IGaveMyWord:
** He might lie about giving his word quite a bit and use ExactWords to get out of it, but when he genuinely means it then Nav will stick by his promises.
** Discord does this when making deals with others, but he's smart enough to make sure the wording is in his favour.

Added DiffLines:

* IncompatibleOrientation: After AJ and Nav get Rainbow drunk while testing out their home-brewed alcohol, they then get Big Mac to flirt with her, partly as a prank and partly since he needs the practice. It doesn't work for this reason.

Added DiffLines:

* InSeriesNickname: Nav is only known by his, and sometimes gets called Navi by Pinkie, which he hates. Celestia gets referred to by the extremely respectful nickname of "sunbutt" on several occasions, for reasons you can probably deduce.
* InsistentTerminology: Nav constantly insists he's not a pony whenever the term anypony is used around him. He does have a point.
* InstantExpert:
** Discord implants the knowledge of the summoning and shapeshifting spells within Twilight, Luna, and Celestia's minds, though none are aware of precisely where or how they came to know them.
** Trope with changelings. When switching forms, their effectiveness is limited without prior experience and training. For this reason it's standard practice to not use unfamiliar forms in combat.

Added DiffLines:

* LoveMakesYouCrazy / LoveMakesYouEvil: Well, it's probably more "jealous obsession" than love, but either way it's not a good comination with Luna's already questionable sanity.

Added DiffLines:

* TheMedic: Celestia's original calling, prior to her and Luna ruling Equestria.

Added DiffLines:

* MurderTheHypotenuse: Celestia claims Luna was trying to do this to Rainbow Dash. The fact that this lie is preferable to the truth speaks volumes.

Added DiffLines:

* TheQuest: Nav leaving Equestria to locate and free the elementals, with the hope of gaining allies against Discord.

Added DiffLines:

* RagsToRiches: Nav. Initially starting with nothing, he gains a tidy sum after winning a competition, makes a lot by plagiarising human works, receives a very large reward after helping take down a dog crime boss, and ends up with a stake in a gem mine after helping the changelings liberate it from the diamond dogs. Despite all this, he doesn't have any real need for the money and lives a fairly frugal lifestyle, though it probably doesn't help that he has a poor grasp of just how much bits are worth.
* RagsToRoyalty: Nav gets the option to do this several times, but so far has turned them all down. He briefly ends up as Luna's consort before the relationship goes spectacularly south, declines an offer from Chrysalis to be her consort, gets out of an ArrangedMarriage with a griffon princess (both politically motivated), and puts an offer to be Celestia's consort on hold several times.

Added DiffLines:

* TheRevolutionWillNotBeCivilized: The campaign in Egypt, which at times practically falls under the label of terrorism.

Added DiffLines:

* ShellShockedVeteran: Nav turns into one after the events of Egypt, and it takes a fairly decent chunk out of his sanity.

Added DiffLines:

* SneakyDeparture: Nav leaves Equestria ahead of schedule in the middle of the night, after Luna confesses her crimes towards him and publicly apologises, since he can't stand the idea of being pittied by others.

Added DiffLines:

* TimeSkip: A bunch of them, as the story takes place over several years, and can skip over months at a time. Even simply travelling somewhere can take between weeks and a month without teleportation.

Added DiffLines:

* TreacheryCoverUp: The "treachery" is rather more abstract, as several of Luna's crimes are more betrayals of the ideals Equestria ostensibly stands for. In any case, Celestia still helps to cover up Luna's more insane actions to avoid shaking the system, and ensures she's punished discreetly.

Added DiffLines:

* WallOfBlather: Nav's view of the friendship lessons Twilight sends. It's implied that Celestia occasionally shares this sentiment, despite her fondness for Twilight.

Added DiffLines:

* WhatsUpKingDude:
** Nav claims that the security protecting the princesses is very poor, and proves his point by successfully 'assassinating' them with ease.
** Nav also tends to play this one quite literally, to the shock and/or horror of others.

Added DiffLines:

* YouCantGoHomeAgain: Despite being told that he cannot, Nav still tries [[spoiler: and actually succeeds despite this. Sort of]].

* BigBrotherIsWatching:
** Celestia and Luna have a spell for this purpose, which deeply angers Nav when he finds out. Blocking this spell is one of the main uses of his AntiMagic ring, after he stumbles across it.
** Discord is usually watching through Nav's eyes, though Nav is unaware of this.

* CuddleBug: Celestia is something of one. For someone who HatesBeingTouched, Nav is generally quite tolerant when she does it, even if he finds it mystifying.

* FantasyContraception: There's a unicorn spell for this purpose, but Nav generally has little need for it for obvious reasons. It's not actually needed when casting the shapeshifting spell either since, it doesn't completely change your original species at the genetic level, but no one seems aware of this.

* JustFriends: Nav and Celestia, for whatever strange definition passes for friendship between them. While she does ask to take him as her consort a few times, various events, politics, or even (in the case of Nav) psychological trauma all conspire to keep this one on the ground. Though for what it's worth, Nav hasn't definitively said no.

* KneelBeforeFrodo: Standard practice for ponies whenever Celestia makes an appearance. Nav flat out refuses to bow down to anyone and claims this is a cultural thing for humans, which sends Twilight into a fit. Apparently the fact that Celestia actually would prefer it if others didn't do this is lost on her.

* OddFriendship: Odd doesn't even begin to describe the relationship between Nav and Celestia. While several elements of their personality are NotSoDifferent, she's a pony princess and the most politically powerful ruler on the planet, he's a fairly average snarky human -- though he manages to obtain a surprisingly large amount of political power and wealth -- and often gets used as a pawn in Celestia's many schemes. Half of their interactions find them on opposing ends of an argument, or dealing with the fallout of something or another. Even the definition of friendship you'd use to describe all this would be rather warped.

* TakeAThirdOption: After Nav quits as Luna's knight following the complete breakdown of their relationship, Celestia offers Nav the chance to be an Umbral knight -- which comes with some very useful perks -- instead of binding himself to either of the royal sisters. Nav himself takes a third option by putting the offer on hold, rather than accepting or rejecting it.

Added DiffLines:

* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Nav isn't just oblivious to it (at first), but has very little understanding of it due to his inexperience on the matter. It certainly doesn't help that due to psychological trauma, he's not even sure if he's capable of feeling it.

* ActuallyPrettyFunny: Celestia is secretly amused when Nav swipes her crown as a prank, but still wastes no time in tasking Twilight to retrieve it. Probably on account of all the chaos this causes, given that she could effortlessly retrieve it in an instant if she wanted.

* AnAxeToGrind: Nav gets a rather nice one when he takes up the role of a Lunar knight. This is then subverted when he refuses to use it, and continues using weapons he's acquired some proficiency in.

* AssholeVictim:
** Despite Blueblood's many failings, it's hard for anyone to argue that he deserved to be robbed of his looks and almost killed by poison, .
** Calix was a very unpleasant pony, to say this least, and while his behaviour would have jeprodized their mission, this probably didn't warrant the extreme step of Nav murdering him.

* AwesomeButImpractical:
** The axe Nav gets when he becomes one of Luna's knights. It's a nice weapon, but utterly pointless to hand someone a weapon they've got no training with and expect them to use it in combat. Nav being Nav, he makes this point somewhat more bluntly.
** After .

* BlackMage: Taya's special talent.

* BoringButPractical: The items Nav brings back with him are for the most part not very interesting due to their impracticality. As a result he ends up bringing stuff that falls into this instead, such as a laptop filled with a lot of humanity's scientific and technological knowledge, and seeds for many useful plant species.

* CatFight: Several moments between Celestia and Luna fall just short of this, in particular their contest of strength during the revised Chapter 11.

* CoitusUninterruptus:
** Nav does this a few times, though he usually tells the person doing the interrupting that he's busy.
** Pinkie at one point attempts to invoke this by persuading Mr. Cake to leave them alone. Given that this is during working hours above his shop, he's not too amenable to the idea and kicks them out.

* DealWithTheDevil: Celestia's initial deal with Discord in the prologue.

to:

* DealWithTheDevil: DeadlyEuphemism: When deciding that Calix needs to be killed, Nav uses the extremely thinly veiled euphemism of "anything can happen on a dangerous road", which fools no-one.
* DeadpanSnarker:
** Nav seems to view being snarky almost as a second job, and slips into TheSnarkKnight territory at times when musing over humanity's or his own failings.
** Taya and Celestia both show a lighter version of this, in the form of the occasional dry and snarky response to Nav.
* DealWithTheDevil:
**
Celestia's initial deal with Discord in the prologue.prologue.
** Discord also offers or forces other characters into such a deal over the course of the story.

* DontCallMeSir: After being knighted, Nav constantly has to ask those he meets not to call him sir. It's still a problem for him even after he quits as Luna's knight. In a similar vein, he also hates it when others make use of some of the other titles he's collected.

* EternalProhibition: Alcohol was allowed in Equestria until the princesses banned it after a NoodleIncident in which half of Ponyfornia was knocked into the ocean, though Celestia turns a blind eye to Nav importing it and sharing the information on how to make it. Other states are far less less restrictive, and salt is allowed in Equestria.

* EvilLaugh: Nav claims this is a talent he used to extensively practice, and makes use of it after gaining his set of ScaryImpracticalArmor.

* ExoticEquipment: The fact that this is generally averted is lampshaded by Nav, but it is played straight with changelings. .

* FantasticDrug: A large amount of them. Alcohol appears to have similar effects on most species, but there are also species-specific drugs, such as salt (ponies), catnip (guess), and chocolate (diamond dogs).

* TheFarmerAndTheViper: After Nav infiltrates a slave ship and helps free them, he's almost killed by an overly cautious unicorn, though the remaining slaves immediately stop her and are very grateful to him.

* HatesBeingTouched: Nav appears to take after Morrigan in this regard, in that he doesn't mind intimate contact quite so much, but generally dislikes being touched or hugged by others. Though there are exceptions to this, and he becomes more tolerant of it over the course of the story.
* HealingFactor: Nav ends up with a minor version of this after his EmergencyTransformation, since he heals faster, and becomes capable of regenerating from damage that would kill a regular human. Serious injuries still result in significant levels of downtime and recuperation however, and he's far from invulnerable.

* INeedAFreakingDrink: A common response of Nav's to the general insanity he encounters.

* InterruptedIntimacy: It occurs several times, though there are occasions where Nav chooses to ignore said interruption.

to:

* InterruptedIntimacy: It occurs several times, though there are occasions where Nav chooses to ignore said interruption.interruption.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He might be abrasive, condescending, and make little secret of how much he thinks you suck, but if you're a good person or his friend then the chances are that Nav will eventually come through for you when you need help.

* MaleGaze: Nav doesn't make any secret it, and openly admits to such in his narration.

* MomentKiller: A very one-sided moment between Luna and Nav is ruined in the revised Chapter 11 by a ride attendent. Nav is particularly grateful for the interruption, even if the resulting silence afterwards is extremely awkward.

* NotQuiteDead: .

* OrphansOrdeal: The details given in Taya's backstory show this in spades. Even Chrysalis is disgusted and shocked by what she's had to live through.
* OrwellianEditor: Luna and particularly Celestia admit to Nav that they've censored large amounts of history, and that the past few thousand years have been far more bloody and violent than ponies are aware of.

* PuppyDogEyes: Even Nav sometimes has a hard time resisting them, particularly when Pinkie does it. His attempts to invoke this himself aren't quite as successful.
-->Luna: Your eyes aren’t large enough to pull off a proper pout.

* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Nav gives a particularly brutal one to Pinkie, and another one to Celestia when she expresses her regret for what she's unwittingly done to him.

* RecordNeedleScratch: The results of combining a social function with Nav's ScaryImpracticalArmor.

* RevealingCoverup: Discord manages to convince Blueblood that his poisoning was one by Celestia and Nav.
* RevengeBeforeReason: [[spoiler: Blueblood is offered a chance by Discord to have his looks restored after his poisoning, or gaining 'revenge' on Nav (who isn't responsible for it in the slightest). Despite his looks being his most valued trait, he goes with the latter, though mostly due to Discord (pretty much literally) whispering in his ear]].

* ScaryImpracticalArmor: Averted, at least with the impractical bit. The set of armour Nav receives is extremely intimidating and scary but still highly practical, and is mentioned to resemble a slightly less spiky version of that seen in VideoGame/Overlord.

* SomethingOnlyTheyWouldSay: When Twilight messes up a spell and body swaps everyone present, Nav (as Taya) is sent to summon Rarity to help. Anyone he runs into refuses to believe his story, until convinced by rather colourful language which only he would use.

* TooDumbToLive: Discord dismisses several of his Mooks deaths as this, on the grounds that if they were too stupid to ignore his instructions then they deserved what they got.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** Nav starts fairly low down on the scale, winning his fights out of luck more than anything else.
** Taya initially begins with almost no magical knowledge, understandably given her background. As the story progresses, she becomes an extremely powerful mage, with her abilities in battle magic -- which turns out to be her talent -- edging out Twilight's. Twilight is still far superior across the board, however.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Nav wasn't exactly the nicest person around to begin with, but becomes more and more of one over the course of the story as a result of bad stuff happening to him.

* TryToFitThatOnABusinessCard: Nav collects all sorts of titles over the course of his adventures, which he has to try to persuade others not to use. At one point he could claim to call himself as Sir Navarone, Knight of the Lunar Order, Defender of Harmony, Royal Savior, Hero of the Changelings, and Liberator of Egypt.
* UngratefulBastard: After Nav infiltrates a slave ship and helps free them, he's almost killed by an overly cautious unicorn, though the remaining slaves immediately stop her and are very grateful to him.

* WeaponOfChoice: Knives and his crossbow for Nav. The latter since it requires very little skill and training, and the former since he's not often going toe to toe with opponents. He later on starts to learn how to use his InfinityPlusOneSword, but it takes a lot of time and effort before he even begins to become competent in its use.

* YouCanRunButYouCantHide: Any unicorn that is already attuned to someone after having teleported them can do this, though most have a distance limitation due to the magical power required. Celestia threatens Nav with this at one point, telling him that at full power she can teleport him to her from anywhere in the world. It's only when Nav gets his AntiMagic ring that this threat becomes nullified.

Added DiffLines:

* YouHaveFailedMe / YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Discord tends to dispose of his minions when they've served their purpose, but it's usually a case of the first leading to the second, rather than either trope outright.

* AllMythsAreTrue: Cain is responsible for the creation of Discord, and according to WordOfGod, a large number of human myths are true. In particular, Merlin was the last human mage.

* AssInAmbassador:
** The Equestrian ambassadors to Egypt are hardly paragons of diplomacy and etiquette, given that they've been ReassignedToAntarctica. Emerald Script isn't too bad, but Calix is so unpleasant and nasty that Nav has him murdered before he can jeopardize matters.
** Blueblood was sent to a foreign social function in Paris after Celestia and Luna were unable to make it, where he continues to be his usual self. [[spoiler: Up until someone tries to poison him at any rate]].

* AxCrazy: Luna tried to have Nav murdered in a jealous rage early on in the story, and then lies to him that she was going after Rainbow Dash instead when it fails.

* TheBeastmaster: Nav is something of a variant; after his partial transformation, less intelligent wildlife ignores him since they recognise him as a tree. He also manages to develop a rapport with the timber wolves in the Everfree Forest owing to this, who had previously been thought to be mindless creatures.
** Fluttershy -- who is one in her own right -- seems to believe Nav plays this one much straighter however, after he helps her with Angel misbehaving. .

* BerserkButton: Nav might not have many standards left as the story goes on, but assuming he has none whatsoever is a good way of making him livid with anger, as AJ finds out firsthand. Viewing him as weak and helpless is another. And start running for your life if you target those who can't fight back.

* BloodLust: Luna, quite literally. Her combining this with her MindRape of Nav ends up being the final straw and causes him to break off their relationship. After he's run out the room screaming in terror.

Added DiffLines:

* BoldlyComing: Even if there aren't any Green Skinned Space Babes, Kirk would probably be proud of Nav in this regard, given how many interspecies liasons he manages to rack up.
* BookSafe: Used as a hiding spot for Nav's diaries at one point.

Added DiffLines:

* ConsummateLiar: Discord. Nav is also fairly skilled, but not quite as good as he thinks he is.

Added DiffLines:

* CrazyPrepared: Nav makes several copies of his journals and fills them with false information, just on the off chance that anyone trying to read them will bring up something and tip him off.

Added DiffLines:

* CulturedWarrior: Despite Rarity tending to berate him for his lack of manners and sophistication, Nav is familiar enough with many classical works to be able to transcribe them (or their main outline) from memory. And then selling those for profit.

Added DiffLines:

* DisproportionateRetribution: Fleur gets Nav (who's in pony form at this point) arrested, simply for turning her down.

Added DiffLines:

* EmpathyPet: Freki, Nav's adopted timber wolf, who can magically pick up on Nav's emotions towards a target and behaves accordingly.

Added DiffLines:

* TheExile: Nav effectively becomes one temporarily when he's sent to Egypt to take care of a situation for Celestia as punishment for committing a crime. Several others also end up being sent with him, but it's more a case of ReassignedToAntarctica since their position is more permanent.

Added DiffLines:

* AFatherToHisMen:
** All of the commanders in the Royal Guard treat their men well, but it particularly applies to Fancy Pants when he ends up as the ranking officer in charge during a war games exercise, and is convinced to surrender by Nav, on the grounds that if it were real it would spare his men's lives.
** Strangely enough, this actually applies to Nav as well. He shows deep regret whenever anyone under his command comes to harm, and .

Added DiffLines:

* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: Humanity did this twice, once when trying to save itself from Discord by putting some humans into stasis, and again when creating the other races, and the elementals to protect and guide them.

Added DiffLines:

* GreenEyedMonster: There are several hints throughout the story which suggest Luna is still rather resentful and bitter of her sister, unlike her canon counterpart.

Added DiffLines:

* HealingHands: Many of the unicorns/alicorns Nav deals with on a regular basis have at least some proficiency at this, particularly the more powerful ones like Twilight and Taya. It was actually Celestia's original calling, and she at one point expresses deep regret and anger that Discord's actions made this impossible for her.

Added DiffLines:

* HemoErotic: Luna. Her combining this with her MindRape of Nav ends up being the final straw and causes him to break off their relationship. After he's run out the room screaming in terror.

Added DiffLines:

* InterruptedIntimacy: It occurs several times, though there are occasions where Nav chooses to ignore said interruption.
* InvisibilityCloak: There's a unicorn spell that does this, but it's very difficult to master and hence quite rare. It's also quite a draining spell to cast, and so can only be used for short amounts of time, unless it happens to be one's special talent.

Added DiffLines:

* KnifeFight: Nav gets in quite a few when he ends up fighting off assassins.

Added DiffLines:

* LivingLieDetector: There's a unicorn spell that does this. Celestia and Twilight eventually figure that it's a good idea to cast it on Nav, though he sometimes gets around it by employing ExactWords or being metaphorical.

Added DiffLines:

* MakingLoveInAllTheWrongPlaces: Done on several occasions. It usually gets interrupted in some way.

Added DiffLines:

* NaughtyByNight:
** Celestia, though she tries to be discreet about it due to having to play the role of the perfect princess. When some of these antics eventually come out, it makes her reputation take a severe hit.
** Luna also does this, to rather horrifying levels.

Added DiffLines:

* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Taken UpToEleven with this version of Pinkie Pie, who at one point manages to hide inside Nav's shirt. Everyone else is just as horrified by that as you might imagine.

Added DiffLines:

Added DiffLines:

* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Kumani, being a dragoness, is quite willing to jobs providing the pay is good. Nav sometimes shows this attitude, but flips between this and being altruistic for it's own sake, even if he tends to focus more on payment as the story progresses.

Added DiffLines:

* ReassignedToAntarctica: Several of the guards and the two ambassadors sent with Nav for his second trip to Egypt are reassigned there, having earned Celestia's ire.

Added DiffLines:

* TamperingWithFoodAndDrink: Blueblood is almost assassinated in this way and barely survives, though it ruins his good looks. .

Added DiffLines:

* ThinkNothingOfIt: Nav flips around between this and OnlyInItForTheMoney several times, though the latter becomes more common throughout the story.
* AThreesomeIsHot: Surprisingly enough, the few times this occurs it's not actually Nav's idea, though he goes along with it.

Added DiffLines:

* TranslationConvention: Much of the dialogue in the story is in the Equestrian language, but rendered into English for the reader by Nav. It can also be assumed that he's mostly writing in the Equestrian script, since no one else understands written English without the use of a translation spell.
* TruthSerums: Nav's SkeletonKey can be used in this way by 'unlocking' a person's mind, briefly sending them into a trance and forcing them to speak the truth, however unwilling they might be.

Added DiffLines:

* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Both Luna and Kumani show elements of this. Not a good combination, considering they're both also Clingy Jealous Girls.

* BloodLust: Luna, quite literally. Her combining this with her MindRape of Nav ends up being the final straw and causes him to break off their relationship. After he's run out the room screaming in terror.

* Can't Argue with Ponies: Ponies hold themselves to be superior than the other races, though this attitude is especially prevelant amongst the nobles. Nav is quite willing to call others out on this.
* TheCasanova: Nav is a very twisted and complicated example. While much of the interest in him is due to his fame, reputation, or novelty, he's surprisingly adept at charming others when needed or desired, though there are those that are immune to his attempts.

** The collective belief of ponies also has an impact. In particular, Nav can fly despite his general lack of magic because, having wings, ponies believe he should be able to do so. .

* TheCorrupter:
** Discord's entire plan involves Nav being one of these, and he later does it to several other characters to suit his own ends.
** In something of an irony given the above, Nav's corrupting influence gets a serious kickstart due to the antics of ponies as a whole, and in particular, the princesses.

* DeadlyDecadentCourt: Trope somewhat. While rarely deadly, upsetting the major players in Canterlot can have very negative repercussions. At one point . Luna is also somewhat mystified over why her sister puts up with it.

* DemotedToExtra: Much of the Mane 6 only appear somewhat sporadically as the story moves on, particularly so with AJ, who barely appears at all within the story.

* EatingTheEyeCandy: At the Grand Galloping Gala in the revised Chapter 10, Nav (in pegasus form) gets eaten up, both by Luna, and also many of the noblemares attending.

* Foil: Shining Armor for Nav. A LawfulGood officer who tries to do right by others, versus a ChaoticNeutral who might be on the same side most of the time, but generally opposes much of what he stands for.
* Foreshadowing:
** The revised Chapter 9 foreshadows that Luna isn't exactly all that right in the head.
** The revised Chapter 10 mentions the repercussions of irritating Fleur, which becomes a minor plot point later on.

* GeneralFailure: Shining Armor is an interesting example. While his forces are easily beaten in a mock battle between the Day Guard and Night Guard (the latter under Nav's leadership), this is more because of ponies' lack of knowledge of modern military tactics and not having much experience with war, rather than personal failings on his part. And once he realises this, he's very willing to learn from the experience and what Nav can teach him.
* GenocideDilemma: This actually crops up twice for Nav, firstly when he helps the changelings in the aftermath of Cadance and Shining Armor's interrupted wedding to spare them, and later again when he works with the changelings to destroy a diamond dog clan. Despite trying to argue for peace in the latter example, he helps the changelings when this proves to be impossible, though he's disgusted with his part in it.

* HumanityIsSuperior: Despite the advantages ponies have over humans -- notably strength and magic -- Nav strongly believes that human society is far better, and he's certainly right to believe it on the technological front. To the point where his relatively limited knowledge of technology and science (though good for his age and level of education) is able to kickstart a technological revolution in changeling society, and sets in motion a dramatic altering of the balance of power between the races.

* HumansAreSurvivors: Nav believes this wholeheartedly, despite the fact that at this point humans are (technically) extinct. He even at one point tells Celestia that if she banished him to Tartarus, he'd find a way to survive out of spite.
-->Navarone: Lonely or not, humans are survivors. That is our long history and as the only one here, I shall do my best to hold onto the tradition.
* HumansAreWarriors: Luna in particular believes this to the point of thinking all humans are Blood Knights. Celestia also comments favourably on humanity regarding this, when she sees how useful Nav has been.

* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Shining Armor is probably the most unambigiously good character in the story, and dedicated to making sure everyone receives justice, regardless of their rank. He does take part in a black op to remove a dangerous criminal from power at one point, mostly because it's the right thing (rather than being in it for the large monetary reward), and actually finds it wrong when Nav comes up with an easy shortcut because it means he earns his side of the reward with very little work.

** Ponies believe this about Celestia, but over the course of events it's shown to be far from the truth.
** Fancy Pants is pretty much the only one of these among the Canterlot nobility, and genuinely uses his position as a force for good, rather than self-interest.

* ItsPersonal:
** During the mock battle between the Day and Night Guard, Shining Armor calls in Luna to arbitrate a dispute over Nav's "cheating", and then takes her hostage when she rules in Nav's favour. The Night Guard and particularly Luna are not pleased by this.
** Discord also becomes this for Nav, .

* KillItWithFire: Nav suggests the changelings dispose of a diamond dog clan in the mines in this way. The lucky ones are quickly asphyxiated by the fire sucking out the oxygen. The unlucky ones...

** Averted on the subject of attraction; even after being turned into a pony himself, Nav does not find them appealing.

* ObliviousToLove: Early on in the revised Chapter 10, Nav is completely and utterly oblivious to Luna's interest in him.

* OhCrap: The crazy unicorn who believes Nav is a monster gets an extremely strong case of this when Celestia tells him that Nav is a friend of hers.

* TheQuisling: Averted with the Night Guard changeling Quisling. Despite taking on the name (with Nav even commenting on the implications of it), he didn't actively betray his hive, but got tired of the life and left it for another. And while he doesn't flaunt his species, he does have the respect of his fellow guards.

* ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem: Initially the princesses themselves are pretty much above the law and can do what they want, given their essential roles in raising the sun and moon, which is both a blessing and curse for Nav. However, events and scandals eventually catch up with them, and they're not quite as above the law as they'd like to believe.

Nav himself takes a third option by putting the offer on hold, rather than accepting or rejecting it.

* DarkerAndEdgier: Compared to the show's version of Equestria, the depiction in Diaries of a Madman is much darker, despite it superficially appearing to keep the SugarBowl setting.
* DatingWhatDaddyHates: Taya tries to invoke this as a way of getting attention, only for it to backfire spectacularly when Nav doesn't have any problems with her dating or her choice of date, and simply tells her to be careful.

* FantasticRacism: Nav accuses ponies as a species of doing this, particularly as they're the only ones to use terms like "anypony", though it's something of an exaggeration on his part. Some of the nobles do look down on the other races and play this one straight, but ponies in general are a very light version of this and casually assume they're better than other cultures without questioning this, rather than it being out of hatred or contempt.

* IfYouEverDoAnythingToHurtHer: Nav's generally fairly relaxed about the idea of Taya dating someone, but he does take a moment to warn Spike not to hurt her if he does anything with her.

It's more a case of FauxHorrific for Nav and the reader however.

* TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody: When Nav first gets turned into a pony, his lack of familiarity with the instincts that come with that renders him particularly vulnerable to pony pheromones. This can be negated through magic or experience however.

* MindScrew: .

* MundaneUtility: Nav makes use of the healing magic of others for everything from genuinely threatening or painful injuries, to eliminating the effects of hangovers.

* TheNoseKnows: While not exactly taken to superpower levels, ponies have a much greater sense of smell than humans. Other species also beat out humans in the nose department.
* NoSell:
** Nav's AntiMagic ring does this to anyone who tries to use magic on the wearer.
** A more mundane example when Nav tries to slam the door shut on someone's hoof, only for him to realise how ineffectual this is on ponies.
** Discord is completely unaffected by Celestia's magic, or indeed almost anything you can throw at him.

* NotSoDifferent: While not explicitly stated, it's made clear over the course of the story that Nav and Celestia are not as different as either would like to believe.

* OneDimensionalThinking: Nav at one point explicitly tells Rainbow Dash that her ineffective use of the Z axis is the reason why her attempts to escape from Pinkie often fail. He doesn't make the same mistake.

* OverprotectiveDad: Generally Trope by Nav, mostly on the grounds that he didn't have a father figure in his life, and doesn't really know much about being a father. He does try to protect her by offering practical advice, but he's not as proactive about it as he should be.

* PowerIncontinence: Taya almost accidentally kills Nav with a case of this when she gets overly stressed by Pinkie's sisters bothering her. It almost puts her off magic entirely, but Nav tells her that her abilities are a gift, and that she simply needs to learn proper control.
* PrinceCharmless: Blueblood, though more so than his show counterpart.

* PunctuatedForEmphasis: Discord does it to Celestia during the prologue, and any time he's particularly provoked and wishes to get his point across.

** The elementals all appear to use these. Those named so far include the water elementals Flo and Aqua, and the air elemental Aerie. Also doubles as FamilyThemeNaming, given that elementals of the same type consider themselves family.

* SealedGoodInACan: Flo. .
* ShapeshifterModeLock: Nav and Twilight temporarily get locked into pony and human form respectively, until a way of reversing the spell's effects is figured out a week later. Once this is done, anyone capable of casting the spell can freely switch someone's appearance.

* SmugSnake: Discord constantly does it. Given how powerful he is to the point where he dwarfs Celestia and Luna, he does have some justification for his attitude, and he often uses it to manipulate others into acting how he wants.

Added DiffLines:

* TakenForGranite: Discord partially turns Celestia to stone during the prologue.

Added DiffLines:

* TheToothHurts: Nav starts prying out the teeth of an assassin in an effort to convince him to talk. Onlooking guards accompanying him almost throw up at the sight of it.
* UnreliableNarrator:
** .
** Nav is an in-universe example, since he leaves stuff out of his journals or puts misleading information in.

Added DiffLines:

* VoluntaryShapeshifting:
** Changelings, obviously.
** The shapeshifting spell that gets discovered allows this, but most casters only have limits on what they can change, with it usually being used to transform from a human to a pony, or vice versa. Celestia, being far more powerful, has much more leeway with shapeshifting.

Added DiffLines:

* YouAreGrounded: Despite his general lack of parenting skills, Nav finally puts his foot down in Chapter 98 and grounds Taya over her recent antics, as well as denying her the use of her magic for a week.
* YouDidntAsk: When Fluttershy finally takes pity on Nav and shows him how to fold his wings, he immediately asks why no one told him before. Turns out they were all waiting for him to ask, and weren't banking on him being so stubborn.

Added DiffLines:

* YouShallNotPass: Celestia's guards try to stop Nav from walking into Celestia's after Luna MindRapes him. Nav beats them up, and they deny that they tried to stop him the following morning.

A much DarkerAndEdgier take on Friendship is Magic, Diaries of a Madman starts with Discord breaking free of his stone prison, where he quickly proves himself to be much older and wiser than his show counterpart. After forcing Celestia to enter into a deal with him to save her subjects -- and making sure one of the terms is that she forgets making the deal -- Discord then introduces Navarone, a fairly regular guy trying to make his way in the world.

Seemingly pulled from his home by an experiment of Twilight's gone wrong, we follow our protagonist on his adventures through Equestria, as he deals with far more violence and evil than he expected from the seemingly peaceful world of ponies. When A much DarkerAndEdgier take on Friendship is Magic, Diaries of a Madman starts with Discord breaks breaking free of his stone prison, where he quickly proves himself to be much older and wiser than he was on the show. A being of ancient and unimaginable power, he forces his show counterpart. After forcing Celestia to make enter into a deal with him to save her little ponies. What she doesn't realize is that subjects -- and making sure one of the terms of the deal is that she forgets ever making it. Enter the deal -- Discord then introduces Navarone, a poor human just fairly regular guy trying to get by—or at least, to make his way in the ponies that's what he looks like. Pulled world.

Seemingly pulled
from his home by an accidental summoning from one Twilight Sparkle, Navarone is thrust into a world experiment of ponies and Twilight's gone wrong, we follow our protagonist on his adventures through Equestria, as he deals with far more violence and evil than he expected from such a the seemingly peaceful seeming world. These are his adventures—with world of ponies. Along with a few asides interjections from everybody's favorite the resident Lord of Chaos, Chaos.

Currently striving to be one

Readers should also know that the story is currently undergoing a rewrite of the first few chapters, given that the author views them as an OldShame and non-indicative of the quality later on.

* AnAesop: Navarone privately mocks the ridiculous nature of Twilight having to send friendship reports, and is not happy when Celestia makes him give one to her himself. Celestia isn't exactly thrilled by what he comes up with either.

* BedmateReveal: Nav at one point wakes up to find Rainbow Dash in his bed, and is rather disturbed until Flo reassures him that nothing happened, and they'd just been drunkenly wrestling before passing out.

* BowAndSwordInAccord: In keeping with his status as a CombatPragmatist, Nav equips himself with a variety of weapons for different situations, though he is especially proficient with his crossbow and daggers.

* TheChainsOfCommanding: Applies to Celestia particularly. While she deeply cares about her subjects and doing what is best for Equestria, she's also very isolated by her position and comes to value Nav as a friend simply for the fact he refuses to treat her with the reverence everyone else shows. She also ends up being extremely stressed when placed in impossible situations.

She also ends up being extremely stressed when as a result of her crown, and is often placed in impossible situations.

* CombatPragmatist: Navarone doesn't just fight dirty, he actively shows his contempt for honorable fighting on multiple occasions. Given the number of times it would have gotten him killed, it's hard to argue.

to:

* ChickMagnet: Nav ends up getting quite a lot of positive attention... and not just from the females.
* CombatPragmatist: Navarone doesn't just fight dirty, he actively shows his contempt for honorable honourable fighting on multiple occasions. Given the number of times it would have gotten him killed, it's hard to argue.

Added DiffLines:

* CreepyChild: Given Taya's lack of social development and a complete lack of awareness over certain social conventions, there are times where she comes across as extremely creepy.

Added DiffLines:

* DeathSeeker: .
* DepravedDentist: Colgate gives off this vibe in spades. However, Nav mistakes her for that kind of depraved dentist, and When he at one point tries to play into this by propositioning her however, it doesn't work at all.

Added DiffLines:

* DreamLand: The aptly named Dreamlands.

Added DiffLines:

* FreakyFridayFlip: Rarity and Nav do this at one point as part of a competition to see who can act most like the other. Naturally, they don't get to hold this without being sucked into adventures.

Added DiffLines:

* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: Almost everyone tells Nav this at one point, but especially Flo and Taya.

Added DiffLines:

* HotSkittyOnWailordAction:
** unfortunate drunken escapade with the giant squid.
** Discussed briefly when Nav discusses his relationship with Kumani and how this might be a problem in the long-term.
* HumanitysWake / Precursors: There are few remnants of humanity lying around, and humans are extremely revered by Minotaurs.

Added DiffLines:

* ILied: .
* AndIMustScream: The nature of Discord's existence. .

Added DiffLines:

* InnocentInnuendo: Nav's interactions with the Naga usually result in copious amounts of this.

Added DiffLines:

* KnightInSourArmor: Nav starts out fairly idealistic but becomes increasingly cynical as he gets let down and used throughout the story. He doesn't even bother trying to pretend otherwise later on in the story.

Added DiffLines:

* LastOfHisKind: Navarone is the last remaining human. .
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Nav's true name of and his ridiculing of how stupid this is can be seen as one, given the number of fanfics where this is used without irony as the protagonist's name.
* LetUsNeverSpeakOfThisAgain: Nav and the Naga agree to this regarding a certain incident that took place after a night of drinking.

Added DiffLines:

* LostTechnology: The dream machine, which eventually gets rediscovered by Luna and Nav, and allows ponies to dream again. With the exception of Pinkie Pie, who already had them regardless.

Added DiffLines:

* MindRape: Nav suffers a horrific one at the hands of Luna.

Added DiffLines:

* NoNameGiven: Naga do not use their clan names when in the presense of outsiders. As a result, is often addressed as simply "Naga" by Navarone unless they're in private.

Added DiffLines:

* OlderThanTheyLook: Spike is a variant of this. Since dragons age differently from ponies, Spike matures more quickly in certain areas than others as the story goes on. He still does retain a few childish characteristics and innocence in certain areas however.

Added DiffLines:

* SharingABody: Occurs several times, though mostly it's a case of SplitPersonality. Flo sharing Nav's body plays it straight however.

Added DiffLines:

* SplitPersonality: Changelings can occasionally suffer from this, particularly if they feed off certain emotions like anger. Eva is the most prominent example in-story.

Added DiffLines:

* TakeThat: Nav's comments over his name can be considered one to the many fics out there where this is used without irony.

Added DiffLines:

* WhatDidIDoLastNight: is horrified when he finds out exactly what happened. The reader might well agree with this assessment.

Added DiffLines:

* WhoNamesTheirKidDude: Navarone is extremely resentful over his parents calling him .

* AllThereInTheManual: The author often clarifies things and provides extra information in the comments section.

* CatFolk: The aptly named cat people.

-->Navarone: Why the hell would anyone fight with honor? If I’m in a fight, I’m in it to win, not to make my opponent feel okay about losing.
* CooldownHug: Often used, particularly towards Nav.
* CursedWithAwesome: All over the place. Navarone's wings and magically gained abilities. Celestia and Luna's agelessness. Especially so with Discord...

* EmergencyTransformation: An unintentional example. After almost being killed in a magical accident, Celestia and Luna have to infuse Nav with life force taken from elsewhere in order to save him, in this case from a tree. As a consequence he's no longer fully human and ends up gaining several plant-like characteristics.

* EroticDream: Luna ends up using the dream machine to give all ponies erotic dreams of Navarone as a form of revenge. This includes the stallions... and the children including his daughter. Very understandably he is furious and extremely upset about this, and it causes a lot of awkwardness and damage to his reputation.
* EthicalSlut: Navarone doesn't have many rules, but he will refuse to get involved with married couples, and won't have anything to do with any mare in heat who hasn't previously expressed any interest in him.

* GenderBender:
** Navarone stumbles across a pair of magical artifacts that change the user's gender upon touching them. It occasionally gets used for a disguise, but more often than not it ends up being used by interested parties for bedroom experimentation, or for practical jokes (or revenge).
** Twilight is mentioned to have once reversed the gender for half the palace's staff in a NoodleIncident.

* GoodIsNotNice: Navarone and Celestia could easily be the poster children for this.

* TheHedonist:
** Vinyl Scratch, as you might expect from someone involved in the rave scene.
** Navarone turns into one, using drugs, drink, and sex as coping mechanisms.

* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Both Navarone and Celestia show this, more often the former, though there are many times where both regret the necessity of their actions.

* LoopholeAbuse: Celestia, Nav, and Discord all love this trope.
-->Celestia: What you did was nothing short of brilliant, and yet at the same time so darkly underhanded that I feel dirty congratulating you for it. I’m thinking about changing the rules for the first time in history.
-->Navarone: Why thank you, Celestia. That means a lot, coming from you.
* LovesTheSoundOfScreaming: Kat, something which Navarone finds extremely scary.
* invokedMemeticSexGod: Some of Navarone's exploits end up giving him a legendary reputation. Rather unfairly for him however, several of these events are caused by factors completely outside his control, rather than willing actions on his part.

* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Navarone. Given his real name is , it's quite understandable why he never uses it.

to:

* NoodleIncident:
** Twilight offhandedly mentions a time where she happened to switch the genders of half the palace staff.
** The Minotaurs ended up being banned from various functions because of what is described in story as a "noodle incident".
** Celestia brings up the time she once disguised herself as a chair for a year just to see what would happen.
** What precisely happened at a party after Nav got drugged is never mentioned to the reader, and Nav himself doesn't want to find out, though it doesn't take too much imagination to figure out roughly what happened.
* NoSocialSkills:
** Taya lacks social graces, partly as a result of the trauma she's suffered. Given that she continues to develop her magical abilities rather than socialise with her peers, it could also be considered an example of SacrificedBasicSkillForAwesomeTraining.
** Navarone often acts like this, simply because he doesn't care. He can turn on the charm if he wants to however.
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: Any mare attempting to distract Nav in this way fails spectacularly due to him not finding ponies physically attractive.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted with the two Gildas. Nav at one point takes to calling them "OG" (Original Gilda) and "PG" (Princess Gilda) to differentiate between them.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Navarone. Given his real name is , it's quite understandable why he never uses it.it, and he's rather resentful of his parents over this.

Added DiffLines:

* SacrificedBasicSkillForAwesomeTraining: Taya develops her magical talents under Twilight's tuition, but at the expense of leaving her social skills even more to be desired.
* TheScapegoat: Passing things off as a magical mishap of Twilight's is often used when a convenient excuse is needed. However what makes it such a believable excuse is the number of times Twilight has genuinely caused these.

Added DiffLines:

* SlippingAMickey: Nav ends up being drugged at a bar and wakes up in a pile of mares. While unhappy about this, he shrugs it off and prefers not to know exactly what happened, and his friends end up being far more upset about this than he is.
* SupernaturalSensitivity:
** Humans can see horns glow on unicorns and can use the colour to identity the caster. Twilight is extremely reluctant to accept this.
** Unicorns can sense magic being used around them to an extent.
* invokedTastesLikeDiabetes: Navarone takes advantage of Taya's ability to invoke this, usually as a way of distracting anyone mad at him.
-->Navarone: Taya quick! Use cuteness!
* Troll: Celestia, who tries to alleviate some of her boredom in this way. Navarone can sometimes engage in this as well, often in response to Celestia's antics.

Added DiffLines:

* WhatTheHellHero: Nav often ends up the receiving end of these. He returns the favour on several occasions.
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: A repeated theme.
** Discord desperately tries to find an outlet for his boredom having lived for billions of years.
** Celestia mentions she would rather have lived a normal life and died thousands of years ago, a sentiment it can be assumed Luna shares.
** When Navarone gains a much increased life expectency after his accidental EmergencyTransformation, he's rather despondent.

----

!!Diaries of a Madman contains examples of the following tropes:

* AntiHero:
** Navarone, big time. He'll usually help those who really need it, but will readily act in underhanded and unethical ways, and generally isn't a very nice person.
** Celestia shows traits of this on occasion. While generally caring and good, she's also not above acting immorally when the need arises, or she's especially bored.
* AntiMagic: Navarone's anti-magic ring, which is extremely helpful since most magic users rely too much on their magic, and he has no natural defense against it.
* BadLiar: Ponies are utterly terrible at lying, a fact which is balanced out by their naivety and willingness to believe the other is telling the truth, unless there's extremely strong evidence to suggest otherwise. Navarone often takes advantage of this.
* BodyBackupDrive: Discord is capable of acting as one, though the only two people we know he's backed up are Cain and Navarone, though Nav is currently unaware he is not the original.
* BrutalHonesty: One of Navarone's defining character traits, and one which often drives others to tears, violence, or both.
* CassandraTruth: Twilight (and by proxy, Celestia) refuse to accept Nav's tales of human technology and dismiss them as impossible stories or exaggeration.
* CombatPragmatist: Navarone doesn't just fight dirty, he actively shows his contempt for honorable fighting.
* Doorstopper: At over 1 million words long, the story is currently the largest on [=FIMFiction.net=] and no way near being complete.
* EmotionEater: Changelings are capable of feeding off all emotions in this version of Equestria, though most prefer love. They can also feed off memories, though human memories as nutritious as raw emotions for reasons as of yet unexplained.
* ExactWords:
** Discord uses this when making a deal with Celestia in the prologue, and mocks her for failing to spot a very obvious problem after she agrees.
** Navarone often uses this and then proceeds to abuse the loopholes he's just created.
* FriendsWithBenefits: Nav accrues an increasing number of these throughout the story.
* AGodIAm: Discord. He also gets very irritated when anyone refers to Celestia or Luna as one, viewing them as pretenders.
* HappilyAdopted: While it's difficult to suggest either is particularly happy given what they've gone through, Taya clearly loves Navarone and vice versa. Even if he constantly fears he's a terrible parent and that Taya has dependency issues.
* HiddenVillain: Discord sets the entire story in motion and influences events behind the scenes, but none of the main characters are aware of his actions or presence. .
* LampshadeHanging: Nav often lampshades how Equestria feels like a cartoon world, and other things that make no sense, such as ponies shrugging off impacts that should injure them, or Pinkie Pie's insanely weird abilities and behaviour.
* AMindIsATerribleThingToRead:
** Navarone deliberately invokes this when Shining Armor tries to break into his mind, by presenting him with horrifying memories. .
** Chrysalis is so disturbed at what Taya has had to live through that she refuses to feed off Taya's sorrowful memories, despite them being extremely filling.
* MoralityPet: Taya often acts as one for Navarone. The others occasionally fulfill this role as well.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Navarone. Given his real name is , it's quite understandable why he never uses it.
* RainbowPimpGear: Navarone gets granted a set of technicolour armour to go with his title of "Defender of Harmony". Ostensibly it's a huge honour, but in reality it's a form of revenge by Celestia due to him ruining one of her plans.
* RealityWarper: Anyone capable of using "true magic" can do this. Discord is a master of it, but Celestia, Luna, have some abilities in the subject. One of the few limits mentioned is that you can't simply will someone dead, though this doesn't stop you from creating a fatal situation.
* ReallyGetsAround: Navarone ends up doing this as a coping mechanism for the psychological damage he suffers over the course of the story.
* RunningGag:
** Navarone repeatedly ends up confused over how old ponies actually are, but no one ever gives him an answer when he asks.
** Big Mac ends up discovering Navarone several times in highly compromising situations.
* ShipperOnDeck: Multiple characters repeatedly try to ship Navarone with Fluttershy, as much as he tries to get them to stop.
