Learning the truth caused "Mettle" to awaken, and gave him the resolve to oppose and subsequently kill his former teammates, his ex-leader managing to take his hand from him before dying. Said incident taught him to choose his friends more carefully, carefully and be more wary of trusting easily, which in turn led to developing friendships with Clover Ebi Ebi, Winter Schnee, and Akira Zaizen.
