** Starving Venom Fusion Dragon is very receptive to Ruby's desire to face many duelists and discover new cards, but refuses to help when she asks for his help saving someone. As Ruby figures out though, it's because he doesn't want to save people, it's that he doesn't understand the concept of saving people, only looking at her quizzically and think "Why?" when she told him to . Starving Venom cares first and foremost about sating his hunger, and gains tunnel vision as a result, Ruby directly comparing him both to dealing with Zwei when taking the latter to the vet, and dealing with herself when she gets too caught up in her projects and needs to be dragged to bed by her family.

In canon, his floppy ears indicated he was a dog Faunus of some sort. Here, his animal trait is kept hidden by his mask, and is revealed to be a bill once it's removed, Blake confirming he's a platypus Faunus.

** Perry is shown to be a rather decent person outside of working with the White Fang, as while he has a large hatred of humanity as a whole, he is rather respectful towards Ruby when they duel at Mt. Glenn, and is AffablyEvil in general to anyone not named Weiss or Blake. Even with the latter though, it's more out of genuine hurt that Blake would "betray" her friends in the Fang, him included, in favor of humans, but is genuinely disturbed upon learning the main reason Blake left was to get away from Adam's abuse, admitting he's now happy she at least got away from him. He also lacks Adam's ANaziByAnyOtherName Faunus Supremacist traits, partly due to having been mentored and taken in by a human himself, and would gladly follow anyone but Adam if given the option, but Adam is sadly the only one able to get results for the Faunus and help bring about a revolution.

** Ruby and Ironwood's relationship in canon was rather limited. Outside of his believing her the night Cinder broke into the CCT, they didn't share a particularly "personal" relationship until Volume 7, and even by that point their relationship largely amounted to a frayed sense of trust and Ruby trying to reassure Ironwood he could count on them, only for said relationship turn sour due a series of bad circumstances. Here, Ruby and Ironwood interact more directly the night of the dance due to Ironwood wanting to verify Ruby knew about Penny's true nature, and quickly find in each other kindred spirits, both being forced into positions of leadership they never wanted while doubting their own abilities, but still wanting to help people first and foremost. Sadly, they also share the belief that they can't show weakness lest they fail those they now lead, the very same detail that .

By the end of their conversation, Ironwood has largely come around to Ruby, even if he still thinks she isn't ready to fight a war, he now shares Ozpin's belief in not wanting her to yet, and is now admittedly fond of her.

** How Ironwood lost his hand, gained his Semblance, and developed trust issues is explained via his DarkAndTroubledPast. Fresh out of Atlas Academy and needing money for his sisters medical bills, he and his former teammates were called up to take a job by their former leader, him being lead to believe it was just defending a shipment for the Ebi family, and going along with it since his leader had been his anchor when he was a socially awkward student. It was actually a case of human trafficking regarding Faunus refugees brought about by the then recent Faunus Rights Revolution, all of his teammates knowing the truth but just not caring. Learning the truth caused "Mettle" to awaken, and gave him the resolve to oppose and subsequently kill his former teammates, his ex-leader managing to take his hand from him before dying. Said incident taught him to choose his friends more carefully and be more wary of trusting easily, which in turn led to developing friendships with Clover Ebi, Winter Schnee, and Akira Zaizen.

** The Winter Maiden Fria's relationship with Ironwood was largely unknown in canon, the most to go on being her calling him "James", something he says only his "friends" are allowed to call him. Here, Fria was the Headmistress of Atlas Academy before him, and was to Ironwood what he is now to Winter: a close friend and mentor. She was also an InternalReformist, working to expunge the corruption plaguing Atlesian society during her tenure, and in turn inspiring Ironwood to continue her efforts.

** Penny is considered the strongest student in Atlas, to the point of being called 'The Second Coming of The Kaiserin', in reference to Winter's title as 'The Kaiserin'. While part of this is due to her nature as an , that doesn't detract from her creation of or her raw dueling skill. Tellingly, she has used all Extra Deck summoning methods apart from Pendulum and is the first duelist in the story to defeat .

Taiyang likewise notes that Rhodes had been one of Ozpin's inner circle, but had been forced to go into hiding as a result of Ozpin, Glynda, and Qrow after he obtained his own Over One Hundred Number, demonstrating that prior personal ties wouldn't stop Ozpin from wanting an "Emperor" dead.

** Trope regarding Ozpin and Qrow. Both are largely the same in terms of characterization, but there is one minor difference in Ozpin's methodology: his willingness to go to certain lengths even if he feels horrible about it, something he often fought with Ironwood over in canon. Ozpin is genuinely terrified over the threat the "Emperors" pose, to the point he is willing to engage in DirtyBusiness and have otherwise innocent people killed if it means stopping the Emperors, even if they were members of his inner circle like once was. Qrow's UndyingLoyalty towards Ozpin likewise leaves him all too willing to carry out orders regarding assassinating them, contrasted with Taiyang severing ties with both of them for being willing to kill innocents at all, and Ironwood seeing for himself just how far Ozpin was willing to go for "the greater good".

Even outside of that, Ozpin's treatment of Team RWBY is explicitly compared to grooming them to be his replacements for Team STRQ, something that in canon was only suggested by Raven, and even then was mostly implied to be her bitterness and disdain for Ozpin doing the talking, leaving Ozpin a much more morally grey figure than in canon.
