''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10379763/1/And-The-Giant-Awoke And the Giant Awoke]]'' is a ''Series/GameOfThrones'' fanfic (firmly set in the world of the show rather than the books, though the author has read them) by [=RemoWilliams=]. It begins with a ForWantOfANail situation near the end of Season 4: rather than Oberyn volunteering to be Tyrion's champion in his trial by combat, the dwarf elects to enter the fight himself. And much to everyone's surprise, a simple bit of trickery actually allows him to win the combat and his freedom. He promptly leaves his family behind and sets sail for Essos, where he fares very well in the local markets with his business smarts. And this is just the first domino to fall, ultimately resulting in a quite different Westeros and Essos than you remember.

These examples of Surprisingly Realistic Outcome seem to violate at least one of these rules, which disqualifies them: No character reactions (characters get angry, don't forgive, don't change their personality instantly, etc.); Too fantastical (depends on the properties of magic, powers, sci-fi tech, monsters, etc.); Not surprising (a character was warned about the outcome, it's used to provide Karma or An Aesop, or it simply follows normal conventions for this genre or medium); Plot happens (the example only describes an event, but not why audiences would expect a different, unrealistic outcome); Not an outcome (a character just explains why something wouldn't work as expected); More of a Deconstruction (the event has major, lasting effects on the plot, make something more realistic, but not completely realistic, or a parody/fanwork applies realistic consequences to the events of a different work); or fits better under a different trope. See the trope's definition for more details. If you believe a removal was a mistake, please bring it up in the cleanup thread.

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: The White Walkers are feared mostly because of their powers over cold, the fear they cause in the enemy and the fact that their weapons will destroy most any they meet in battle. Take away those advantages (systems to restart fires, wildfire, strategy, Valyrian steel)... and they prove to be rather poor fighters.
** [[spoiler: The death of the Night King doesn’t kill all of the White Walkers like the show, but the army is still weakened to the point of no return; with no one leading or controlling them, the army is reduced to animals who, among other things, attack each other and flee the battle.]]
** A medieval society cannot predict the weather; Tywin and Euron are forced to abandon all semblance of strategy in their skirmishes against each other because the raiding parties that were attacking each other were forced to change course because of an unexpected storm and they met in the middle of the ocean.

[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10379763/1/And-The-Giant-Awoke And the Giant Awoke]] is a ''Series/GameOfThrones'' fanfic (firmly set in the world of the show rather than the books, though the author has read them) by [=RemoWilliams=].
