At the same time as ''AYBS?'', he also had a regular role on ''Series/ZCars'' as PC Yates.

His first speaking role came in ''Series/DoctorWho'' in "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS2E2TheDalekInvasionOfEarth The Dalek Invasion of Earth]]", with Smith having persuaded Richard Martin, to expand his role so he appeared in three of the six episodes instead of only one or two.
