The company was established in 1972 by several former [[Creator/MushiProductions Mushi Pro]] staff--including Masao Maruyama, Osamu Dezaki, Rintaro, and Yoshiaki Kawajiri--as an outsourcing unit for Creator/TMSEntertainment. Maruyama retired from the company in 2011 at the age of 70 to start Creator/{{MAPPA}}, which resulted in a significant number of staff leaving and marked the EndOfAnAge. Post-2011 Madhouse is in the process of fashioning a new identity for itself.

Boondocks doesn’t deserve a primary mention, and anyway, it only did partial animation credit and it is uncredited. Spawn on the other hand had more official title of Madhouse as well as better animation quality.
