After his family fled UsefulNotes/{{Vietnam}} as refugees following the end of UsefulNotes/TheVietnamWar, he became a successful child actor in the 1980s, playing Short Round in ''Film/IndianaJonesAndTheTempleOfDoom'' and Data in ''Film/TheGoonies''.

Following several roles in the 1990s, Quan retired from acting in the early 2000s due to the lack of roles for Asian actors in Hollywood, working as a stunt choreographer for ''Film/XMen1'' and an assistant director for ''Film/TheOne'' and ''Film/TwoThousandFortySix''.
