Henry Gibson (born James Bateman; September 21, 1935 – September 14, 2009) was an American character actor known for his comically eccentric roles.

He started out in the [[TheSixties '60s]] with guest appearances on a number of television series, first becoming a household name as a cast member on ''Series/RowanAndMartinsLaughIn'', where his specialty was reciting satirical poetry in hippie attire.

On the big screen, he was known for his appearances in several Creator/RobertAltman films (most notably as country singer Haven Hamilton in ''Film/{{Nashville}}''), and for his role as the leader of the "Illinois Nazis" in ''Film/TheBluesBrothers''. He also did a fair amount of voice acting work in animation.

He died of cancer in 2009, one week shy of his 74th birthday.
