** Specifically, some stories state that there isn't actually anything forcing him to return to the fifth dimension if he says his name backwards -- it's purely a self-imposed restriction he made up as a way to give Superman a shot at beating him. During John Byrne's run, he would regularly change up what was needed to send him back to keep things interesting and would willingly leave if Superman fulfilled those conditions.

* SchmuckBait: During his scuffle against Batmite whilst messing around on Supergirl and Batgirl, Mxy declares he has won their bet and demands the prize money, Batmite writes a check and hands it over to Mxy, saying he has signed it with his real name. Puzzled, Mxyzptlk reads "Klt Pzy Xm"...and he realizes he has been tricked into saying his name backward right before being forcefully and automatically returned to his own dimension.

* CourtJester: Was a court jester in his home dimension.

** On the other hand, he loses his powers when TheMagicGoesAway during ''[[Comicbook/{{Shadowpact}} Day of Vengeance]]''. [[spoiler: He seems to die while taking a kryptonite spear to the chest intended for Superman]] but can be heard whispering "Kltpzyxm" before he vanishes.

** Another storyline has him and Bat-Mite having a petty squabble which ends up destroying the entire multiverse with seemingly little effort on both of their parts. He even gets hit by [[Characters/NewGodsDarkseid Darkseid]]'s Omega Effect with absolutely no impact besides the beam lighting his cigar. He then destroys Apokolips with a gesture in the next panel. And [[KickTheSonOfABitch just to rub salt in the wounds]], he hands Darkseid a piece of paper showing the Anti-Life Equation, whose solution is a crude drawing of Mxy and Bat-Mite. This leaves [[NotSoStoic Darkseid]] LaughingMad.

* BreakTheHaughty: When [[Characters/BatmanTheJoker The Joker]] [[DidYouJustScamCthulhu screwed him over]] and [[CanonDiscontinuity when Superboy-Prime caught him and beat him up]].

** In ''Countdown to Infinite Crisis'', Superboy-Prime gets annoyed and frustrated by his trickster antics and decides to repay by viciously beating Mxy into becoming terrified of him. As a result, the fifth-dimensional imp- becomes so afraid that he isolates himself into his own dimension, never to come out until around a decade later.

** Interestingly (perhaps due to the StoryBreakingPowers nature of his abilities) in the story in question his powers are heavily downplayed and he is more a threat due to him being TheMastermind.

** They used to hint that he was also Impossible Man from the ''ComicBook/FantasticFour'' comics but a crossover between Superman and The ''ComicBook/SilverSurfer'' had them both meeting each other.

** In fact during a LawyerFriendlyCameo on issue 50 of ''Superman (Vol. 2)'', it features Mxy messing with the Fantastic Four of Earth-90125 taking on a form that resembles the Impossible Man.
