** Specifically, some stories state that there isn't actually anything forcing him to return to the fifth dimension if he says his name backwards -- it's purely a self-imposed restriction he made up as a way to give Superman a shot at beating him. During John Byrne's run, he would regularly change up what was needed to send him back to keep things interesting and would willingly leave if Superman fulfilled those conditions.

* ItOnlyWorksOnce: Although it’s relatively easy to trick Mxy into saying or spelling his name backwards, he usually takes great precautions against whatever tactic was used against him so as he won’t make the same mistake next time.

* SchmuckBait: During his scuffle against Batmite whilst messing around on Supergirl and Batgirl, Mxy declares he has won their bet and demands the prize money, Batmite writes a check and hands it over to Mxy, saying he has signed it with his real name. Puzzled, Mxyzptlk reads "Klt Pzy Xm"...and he realizes he has been tricked into saying his name backward right before being forcefully and automatically returned to his own dimension.

** Another storyline has him and Bat-Mite having a petty squabble which ends up destroying the entire multiverse with seemingly little effort on both of their parts. He even gets hit by Darkseid's Omega Effect with absolutely no impact besides the beam lighting his cigar. He then destroys Apokolips with a gesture in the next panel. And just to rub salt in the wounds, he hands Darkseid a piece of paper showing the Anti-Life Equation, whose solution is a crude drawing of Mxy and Bat-Mite. This leaves Darkseid LaughingMad.

Countdown to Final Crisis and Countdown to Infinite Crisis are two different stories.

** In Countdown to Infinite Crisis, Superboy-Prime gets annoyed and frustrated by his trickster antics and decides to repay by viciously beating Mxy into becoming terrified of him. As a result, the fifth-dimensional imp- becomes so afraid that he isolates himself into his own dimension, never to come out until around a decade later.

* DependingOnTheWriter: The reason for his backwards name weakness has varied between continuities. His Golden Age comic book debut established that "Mxyztplk" wasn't his real name but a spell that enabled him to enter Superman's world, with reciting the spell backwards naturally sending him back to the Fifth Dimension. The Silver Age simply went with Mxyzptlk being forced to return to the Fifth Dimension after saying his name backwards because that was how things were with fifth-dimensional beings, while Creator/JohnByrne's run in the Post-Crisis continuity made it so that Mxyzptlk made up the backwards name weakness himself to ensure Superman had a fair chance at beating him.

* HarmlessVillain: He is typically this. As ungodly & impossibly powerful Mxy is, it is pretty easy to trick him into saying his name backwards and send him back to his home dimension. And when that happens, everything he’s done reverts back to normal as though nothing happened.
