Acho has one life left. They were chased down and killed by an oversized cat clone on Day 47 [[spoiler:when Scott's revenge plan against the cats backfires]], and was mauled by another cat on Day 57 after aggravating it.

* AmazingTechnicolorWildlife: Acho has lilac fur; it's justified from him being a former pet fancy rat [[spoiler:who had purple ink spilled over him, and his fur is revealed to be naturally greyish white in his lore finale.]]
* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler:Takes on the persona of a poet in emulation of his ex-owner]] and admits in his lore finale that he has no idea what he's doing, but as the other rats point out, he's actually doing a decent job at it.

* LibertyOverProsperity: [[spoiler:Being a former pet, Acho spends a significant part of the series having an IdentityBreakdown from struggling to find a sense of belonging, and the hectic life in the Rattic [[NotUsedToFreedom gradually sends him into a state of delusion that he's better off retreating into a pet cage]]. He soon finds he misses his friends and the joy and purpose he's found with them more than he does life ''before'' meeting them, and [[LibertyOverProsperity rushes to break out]].]]

\\
Apo has one life left. He was first [[PushedAtTheMonster pushed into a clowder of cats by Oli to save ratself]] on Day 29, then was blown up by Owen [[spoiler:in the destruction of the future DoomsdayDevice's core]] during the Jingle Jam Christmas event on Day 60.
----
* {{Cosplay}}: Apo is designated as the Cosplayer of the group, and spends most of the series wearing one of Literature/LittleRedRidingHood, nicknaming themself "Little Rat Riding Man".
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: A subtle change; following his "Forgotten Memories" lore finale, Apo can be seen with longer hair, implying that he's growing it out as he [[spoiler:embraces his gender identity]].
* FriendlessBackground: Has spent months living alone in the woods prior to the start of the SMP, and mentions on Day 29 that xe made xyr first friends in the Mansion with the other rats.
* GiftGivingGaffe: On Day 39 and following Ratsgiving, in honour of Oli's initiative of "Garbage Day", Apo -- clearly still resenting rat for having them PushedAtTheMonster and being acquitted for it -- decides to give rat a globe "because I know you can't read it whatsoever" (and thus garbage to rat) and glass shards because they hope "it pokes through your intestines". [[InsultBackfire Oli takes it all in rats stride]].
* GoMadFromTheIsolation: Describes the interior of the Janitor's Van on Day 29 to be white, desolate, and empty, designed to invoke this reaction, and invoke it, it does -- sending her into a pessimistic spiral to the point of yelling at her flea-chat to find another rat companion lest they be sent to be poisoned and killed too.
* INeedAFreakingDrink: After trying and failing to [[spoiler:coax Acho out of the Son's cage]] on Day 80, Apo retreats to the Rattic Bar to ask Martyn for the strongest drink he's got.
* {{Meido}}: Dresses up as Haru for the Halloween event on Day 16 in emulation of human festive practices, having learnt that from living in a cabin before coming to the Mansion; Martyn quickly also joins in on the bit by donning his own maid dress. He wears the outfit again [[spoiler:while grieving]] during the Christmas event on Day 64.
* SweetTooth: Makes a dark joke on Day 29 that the Janitor didn't even offer him candy before capturing him, and the Grandmother gives him several packets of "Scootles" for Christmas.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: According to their Twitter character bio, watermelon, and by extension, melon juice.
* TraumaCongaLine: Day 29 has been ''rough'' for Apo -- first, ze gets caught by the Janitor raiding the Laundry Room, who openly expresses murderous intent to the rats whom he ''knows'' are sentient, then ze's trapped in his Van to the exterminator's and left to GoMadFromTheIsolation while preparing to ''die'', and after being rescued and having a philosophical moment to live by CarpeDiem, ze raids one of the Storage Rooms with Oli for cosplay gear, only for both of them to get cornered by Oy and Oreo and for Oli to [[PushedAtTheMonster shove hir off a ledge to be mauled to death]] while he escapes.

'''Specialties:''' Combat and navigating
Bek is the Fighter of the group. She used to live in the subways in the city before moving to the Mansion, and started out in the Lobby with Oli.\\
\\
Bek has two lives left. He was accidentally killed by Eloise during their date due to an underestimation of the rats' toughness. %%How did they die? It's definitely after Day 47.
----
* ActionGirl: From a rat whose specialty includes combat, this is obvious.
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: {{Downplayed|Trope}} and {{subverted|Trope}}. While running from two oversized cat clones on Day 47, Bek rushes to the Mother to get captured and teleported away from the cats, as opposed to being mauled to death on the spot. Unfortunately for her, the Mother captures the cat clone ''with'' her, which almost kills her in the cage, but she is luckily freed in time.
* {{Bouncer}}: She works as this for the Rattic Bar, and is usually there to keep an eye on any visitors, who may or may not have been previously banned from the place (or had restricted access) for various reasons. Her fleas are also quick to check the rules of the establishment in case she has to throw anyone out.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: They prefer to use fists to fight as opposed to weapons like swords and knives.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Briefly on Day 19, as pointed out by Will and Krow; while on their way to rescue another rat from the Maid's Room, Bek laughs at the Maid and calls her an idiot for not being in her room to keep an eye on the rats trapped there, which is immediately followed by them being captured by the Maid.
* LesbianJock: Vehemently denies any attraction to men, and runs a fighting ring.
* NoodleIncident: On Day 2, she mentions that she once got stuck in a tin can.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: Bek, a small rat, almost manages to beat Ponk, a badger guest wearing a leather tunic, in a fight and possibly ''could have'' if he wasn't wearing the armour.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: According to her Twitter character bio, pizza.
* VisualPun: Bek operates a [[Film/FightClub secret]], underground gym-slash-combat club under the cover of a rat laundromat built into an upturned laundry basket. As he puts it, it's a [[WhiteCollarCrime money-laundering]] scheme.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: GenderInvertedTrope. She is shirtless, no matter the weather. She explains that it's to have the widest range of motion in a fight. Of course, being a rat in Minecraft probably helps with getting past the media nudity taboo… [[spoiler:and she's left in dismay when everyone else forces her to put on a shirt in the finale so that she won't ''freeze to death'' in the January cold.]]

El is the "Diplo-rat" of the group. She started out in the Play Room with Jimmy and Krow. A former "aristo-rat", El left home in pursuit of her dreams to become an artist.\\

El has one life left. She was first killed by a wolf while exploring the woods with Scott on Day 53, and was later blown up by Owen [[spoiler:in the destruction of the future DoomsdayDevice's core]] during the Jingle Jam Christmas event on Day 60.
----
* BlueBlood: According to her 1st episode, El is an "aristo-rat" whose family owns three alleyways and two garbage bins, one of which she inherited at birth.
* CityMouse: El proclaims herself to be from the city and unprepared to handle constant threats like wild wolves. According to Scott, she's more from the suburbs, at least in contrast to Shelby being from the BigApplesauce.
* CutenessProximity: Her first reaction to the axolotls in one of the garden ponds is to coo over them, calling them "sea rats".
* DefectorFromDecadence: In spite of being from rat nobility, El left "aristoracy" behind because she thought it wasn't right for her family to treat commoner rats poorly and leave them to go hungry.
* ForcedTransformation: Is temporarily turned into a cat after a potions mishap courtesy of Oli on Day 39. Thankfully, the transformation is reversible.
* HandwritingAsCharacterization: El is one of the few rats who can write for much of the series, and is the go-to scribe whenever the rats have to leave {{Forged Message}}s to the humans; it's suggested that her "passable for human" and implicitly good handwriting is a remnant of her noble upbringing.
* INeedAFreakingDrink: After a long day of wrangling [[WildCard Tubbo's]] shenanigans and the start of the feline invasion on the household on Day 10, El decides to "hit the Rattic Bar".
* NoodleIncident: On Day 15, while trying to convince Ponk that they have to leave the Mansion as soon as possible, El recounts sneaking into a big house when she was younger and finding a taxidermied badger mount on the wall there.
* PassThePopcorn: When Tubbo runs to [=1v2=] the cats of the Mansion, some of the other rats watch on from the table in the Lobby, with El asking if anyone has popcorn while watching with a spyglass.
* TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody: After her ForcedTransformation into a cat on Day 39, El starts gaining a craving for [[StockAnimalDiet milk]] and meowing in between reading.

'''Preferred name:''' Jimmy\\

'''Specialty:''' Safety\\
''"There's one thing Safety Man needed, and it was a knife."''
Jimmy is the Safety Rat. He started out in the Play Room with Krow and El. In spite of his designated role, he has a boisterous streak and dubiously violent tendencies.\\
\\
Jimmy has two lives left. He was killed by a massive cat clone on Day 47 [[spoiler:when Scott's revenge plan against the cats backfires]].
----
* DarkAndTroubledPast: As he states on Day 10, the reason Jimmy is the Safety Rat is apparently because he took a pledge after his old house burnt down with everyone in it.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler:After attracting the attention of the Gardener, Jimmy runs off into a pond to escape, and leads on the Gardener enough for him to ''drown'' in the garden pond. Thankfully for the humans, the Gardener respawns.]]
* {{Hypocrite}}: In spite of being designated as the "Safety Rat", Jimmy has a fairly reckless streak that lands him in trouble every so often, has gotten himself and many of the other rats caught by humans on numerous occasions, and is more than willing to try and ''stab'' humans with a knife. When El comments on his hi-vis safety vest at the very start of the series, Jimmy describes himself as "all about safety", and accidentally shoves her off the toy box they were on literally two seconds later.
-->'''Krow:''' That didn't seem very safe!
* LackOfEmpathy: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. On Day 29, when Apo is captured and imprisoned in the Janitor's Van, Jimmy questions if the rats even cared if the Janitor drove off with Apo, essentially questioning if they should even bother saving them. Only when ''just about everyone else'' responds with a resounding BluntYes and/or start protesting does he declare himself on board with the rescue mission as well.
* MetaphorIsMyMiddleName: He claims on Day 1 of the SMP that 'Safety' is his middle name.
* NoSocialSkills: While he's able to get along with most of the other rats, Jimmy can get quite tactless at times, especially when he's angry.
* NoodleIncident: Apparently, there's a course one has to take to run around with a knife, and another to take to hold scissors properly; Jimmy has alleged to have failed the latter due to a bad accident.
* PsychoKnifeNut: Jimmy is decidedly one of the more… ''unhinged'' rats, shall we say, and has been constantly running around with a knife since Day 1 and threatening humans every other day. [[spoiler:He also endorses Scott's RevengeBeforeReason plan against the cats when he first hears of it, though his opinion immediately shifts to opposition when it's clear it's not working as intended.]]

Krow is the Strategist of the group. It started out in the Play Room with El and Jimmy.\\
\\
Krow has one life left. It lost its first life from not being saved from a cage in time, then was mauled by a cat on Day 19. ----
* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: {{Justified|Trope}}; Martyn and Owen mention on Day 2 that Krow's red fur streaks were dyed using tomato paste, while Krow claims it's dyed from fox blood.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:Loses its third and final life in the Jingle Jam Christmas event, in which death in any time period is equivalent to a death in the Mansion's present day, but is brought back to life through the other rats' asynchronous singing to "wish upon a star" and Oli's second life.]]
* ClosestThingWeGot: On Day 59, Krow is roped into brewing healing potions in an attempt to repair Phil and Kara's wings, as the only rat who has remotely ''any'' brewing experience after [[spoiler:Scott enlisted its help in his revenge plan that ultimately led to the Cat-astrophe.]]
* ADogNamedCat: A rat named 'Krow', specifically. This has caused [[WhosOnFirst some occasional confusion]] during Phil and Kara's guest appearance on Day 59; it also takes offense when Owen finds a quest-book from the Gardener titled "Stupid Crows".
-->'''Krow:''' Pay attention to ''the'' Krow. You guys may be crows, but I am always ''the'' Krow.
* EarNotch: Is vehemently anti-cat and the one time it tries to play nice with a cat, it loses a canon life to the cat and receives this. Martyn's "Secret Santa" makes a nod to this incident:
-->''I'm the S to the A to the N-T-A\\
I've got a fat rat tum and my whip is a sleigh\\
Because I'm tuggin' on the reindeer\\
Humans better steer clear\\
Or I'll be taking out the chunk like cats did to Krow's ear''
* ExtremeOmnivore: Surprisingly {{enforced|Trope}}. Krow mentions on Day 59 that its fleas say it had a phantom membrane at one point, i.e. what Phil and Kara are looking for, but later reports back that it ate it. In reality, Krow picked one up from killing hostile moths (phantoms in-game) earlier in the series, but due to GameplayAndStorySegregation, wasn't supposed to have it in the first place.
* TheIllegible: {{Implied|Trope}} on Day 9, where Krow says it can write, but its handwriting is too shaky for writing any {{Forged Message}}s; it's suggested this may be related to its small size in contrast with much larger quill pens.
* MysteriousPast: Krow states on Day 1 that it doesn't really remember its past; this causes it to stand out among all the rats for being among the few with essentially no backstory details from before arriving at the Mansion.
* RidiculouslySuccessfulFutureSelf: In the version of the future the rats travel to during the Jingle Jam Christmas event, Krow will eventually be the first rat to set foot on the Moon, which causes the rats to question whether the future is unchangeable and if that makes Krow immortal. As it turns out, [[spoiler:it doesn't, and while Krow is brought BackFromTheDead at the end of the event, WordOfGod eventually [[https://twitter.com/krowfangtv/status/1713986306185805948?s=20 jokes about]] it getting run over by a car and losing its last life permanently at some point in the future, making Krow's true fate questionable.]] [[invoked]]
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Krow once straight-up logs out after being cornered and nearly killed by a cat. Given it's already on one life at a time, it's a perfectly understandable decision. %%my guess is day 47 but i need to check the vod

\\
Martyn has one life left. However, he previously made a [[LeonineContract deal]] with a spirit during the Halloween event on Day 16, who gave him a fourth life.
----
* TheBartender: He runs the bar in the Attic and has given out his share of advice when it comes to inter-rodential relationships between the rats.

* DisproportionateRetribution: PlayedForLaughs on Day 3, where Martyn bans Owen from his then-future Rattic Bar for making a WhatsAHenway joke at him in the in-game chat earlier that day; he's left only half-barred later that day after helping to stock up the alcohol supply, quarter-barred at the start of Day 16 for recognizing a Halloween decoration as a cat instantly, and fully unbanned for turning up to the bar's opening after the Halloween event on Day 16.
* FrenchMaidOutfit: Spends part of his time on the server wearing blond twintails and one such outfit in his "[[Music/HatsuneMiku Ratsune Miku]]" persona.
* GoldDigger: Gets engaged to Water during her guest appearance in an attempt to get his paws on her royal termite fortune.
* HurricaneOfPuns: As befitting of an establishment run by the Pun Master, every menu item in the Rattic Bar is named after a rodent pun, including Smirnoff Mice, Tailquila, Mratyni, Cosratpolitail, Whiskery, Rat on the Beach, Long Island Mice Tea, Piña Tailada, Strawberry Ratuiri, and Shots of Taileys.
* LaserGuidedKarma: On Day 57, Martyn lures the Gardener into walking into the Lounge's fireplace, who complies due to ArtificialStupidity. He's caught ''by'' the Gardener and put in a cage shortly afterward.
* LeonineContract: When the spirit Owen traps in his carved pumpkin calls out to Martyn to free it, Martyn only agrees in exchange for an extra canon life to be "beyond" normal rats and a piece of glowstone to "shine" upon everyone else.
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: {{Discussed|Trope}}; Martyn claims to have [[ExplosiveBreeder 500 children]] by the time the series takes place, though none of them are ever seen in the livestreams or episodes.[[note]]A later livestream has him claim that he only has two kids, which is likely a reflection of his content creator counterpart's family life.[[/note]] Given his background as a DimensionalTraveler, it's unlikely for this to be true.
%%* TheNeedless: According to [[invoked]]WordOfGod, being a DimensionalTraveler, Martyn "doesn't need nutrition or sleep as he's currently not flesh and bone", but tries to act like everyone else to blend in and maintain a human sense of self.
* PungeonMaster: Martyn's designated specialty is being the "Pun Master", and he engages in this behaviour every so often.

'''Specialties:''' Rummaging through garbage, eating things he shouldn't eat, and monologuing about rat life\\
''"I came in just to cause problems."''
Oli is the Garbage Rat. He started out in the Lobby of the Mansion with Bek. Born in the sewers and raised in the trash, he had a rough life prior to his arrival there.\\
\\
Oli has one life left. He was first murdered in self-defense by El, then has his second life [[spoiler:stolen to revive Krow]] at the end of the Jingle Jam Christmas event on Day 60.
----
* BreakingTheFourthWall: Oli repeatedly smashes the Fourth Wall out of existence on Day 1, making references to the rats' character sheets on Twitter and content creation on channels.
* BrooklynRage: Oli, like garbages sister Shelby, is from New York and used to be a street-fighter. Garbage also casually threatens to ''kill'' any rat who tries to steal garbages memoirs to the Butler.
* CannotKeepASecret: In his lovesickness, Oli writes in his memoirs to the Butler on Day 19 about the rats' presence in the Mansion and how "they're not all good" for ''stealing'' said memoir, to everyone else's dismay.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Oli's [[ParentalAbandonment mother apparently "died long ago from rat diseases" and his father was apparently flushed down the toilet of a night club and drowned as a result]], causing him to turn to rummaging through garbage for survival. He also has an absurdly large number of dead family members; the only one who's confirmed to be alive is Shelby, his [[LongLostRelative long-lost sister]] whom he thought was dead.
* DirtyCoward: Apo's first life was lost because Oli [[PushedAtTheMonster pushed them to the clowder of cats ambushing them to save himself]]. This results in a CourtroomEpisode, where he's acquitted.
* ExtremeOmnivore: Oli, befitting of the Garbage Rummager, has been known to eat substances like apple seeds and glue. He ''is'' a rat, though, which are known for eating just about anything and everything.
* InterspeciesRomance: Oli has a crush on the human Butler of the Mansion, and wants to, in his words in the finale, "pork" him; when the other rats find out, they decide to let him have "this one" in part due to his DarkAndTroubledPast. However, this ''is'' PlayedForLaughs throughout the series as [[BrattyHalfPint the Son]] has been blamed for several of Oli's attempts to catch the Butler's attention. [[spoiler:It doesn't work out in the slightest.]]
* PoopingWhereYouShouldnt: Has a tendency to leave rats faeces (various Chisel and Bits bits in-game) all over the Mansion and the Attic, including on windowsills and tables, behind and under furniture, and in other rats' houses.
-->'''Oli:''' Wherever I go, I leave my mark.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: According to rats Twitter character bio, [[ExtremeOmnivore garbage]].
* VagueAge: He often says a different number whenever someone asks about his age, and he claims to have been on the Titanic during its sinking. He also claims that his mother was the model for the face of the Statue of Libraty/Ratue of Liberty, yet its real-life counterpart was designed and assembled in the 19th century.

Oliver is the Lawyer of the group. They used to live in the walls of a lawyer's office in New York until they decided to hop in a UPS box and shipped themself out to a random address in the countryside, i.e. the Mansion, and started out in a storage room with Will.\\
\\
Oliver has one life left. He was first killed by Martyn on Day 1 at Oli's request for telling Acho about the Attic's open window to the roof, and drowned while trying to access [[spoiler:the future DoomsdayDevice's satellite]] during the Jingle Jam Christmas event on Day 60.
----
* {{Bookworm}}: Other than law documents, living in an office means Oliver has read plenty of the books there in their time, including books on human civilization and how they're formed; they are also aware of concepts like the human education system and make a passing mention to the cat clones performing mitosis. However, their human knowledge isn't perfect either, as while they have heard of a xylophone as of Day 81, they assume it is a scientific instrument.
* ICallItVera: Names their letter opener knife "Justice".
* IngestingKnowledge: {{Discussed|Trope}} on Day 1. It's claimed that Oliver is smart and knowledgeable because whenever they eat a paper document, they absorb the information and knowledge printed on it.
* NonActionGuy: He's not great at fighting and running, in part due to his lawyerly background.
* NoodleIncident: They make references to several cases dealt with in the law office they were from, including one involving an escape room.
* ThePenIsMightier: Most of the other rats use {{Sewing Needle Sword}}s or safety pins; Oliver stands out by wielding a large pencil.
* APigNamedPorkchop: As they put it on Day 57, Babamari, their adopted Glow Squid child, is "like 'calamari' but baba".
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: [[DiscussedTrope Suggests]] running away from the Mansion during the Cat-astrophe on Day 47, saying it's not a safe environment for him to raise his adopted Glow Squid child with Sniff, Babamari.

->'''IGN:''' [=Owenge_Juice=]\\
'''Preferred name:''' Owen\\
'''Personal pronouns:''' He/Him\\
'''Specialty:''' Tinkering and engineering
Owen is the Tinkerer of the group. He started out in the piano in the Music Room with Martyn, having clambered in to try to fix it. He's incredibly passionate for his craft and embodies the analytical, curious scientist, but tends to act accordance to rules and order.\\
\\
Owen has two lives left. He died from the Wither effect after inhaling deadly fungal spores at the end of Day 39.
----
* AgentScully: He's skeptical of any claim unless he can see it with his own two eyes, including Tubbo's hunch about the cats' presence on Day 10 and Billzo's PunchedAcrossTheRoom ability on Day 62.
* AmbiguouslyRelated: Owen's mother alleges his father to have been a great inventor and scientist, which Owen later grows disinclined to believe due to a lack of evidence in writings and inventions. However, there ''is'' one rat who possibly fits the bill: [[spoiler:Rusty, the rat who pioneered {{dimensional travel|er}}, wrote a book on how to open portals to other realms (and indirectly helped Sneeg find his way back to the ''Origins'' worlds), and has since moved on to traverse the multiverse.]]
* BlackSheep: {{Subverted|Trope}}. Tubbo tries to frame Owen as this and as LesCollaborateurs for "the Ratsistance" for wanting to live in quiet hiding from the humans of the Mansion, as opposed to wanting to kill them or cause mass property damage. In reality, not even other members of "the Ratsistance" hold views as extreme as Tubbo's.
* CuriosityKilledTheCast: While destroying and removing patches of invasive fungus from the garden, Owen secretly ignores Scott's warnings of how deadly it is to investigate it for "science", first keeping one of the mushrooms in a containment chamber on Day 35, then after planting said mushroom in the Boiler Room to get rid of the moth infestation there later that day, ''going into the Boiler Room to investigate it further'' at the end of Day 39, albeit at his gear-chat's request[[note]](by an 87% poll victory)[[/note]]. By the time he's realized what a bad idea ''that'' is, it's too late. [[spoiler:His lore finale reveals this fiasco happened in the first place because he let his {{Pride}} get to him.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:Was raised as the youngest in a massive single-parent household, who was separated from his family after the owner of the cottage they lived in the walls of called an exterminator on them.]]
* DelayedOhCrap: On Day 29, after insisting on how he told Bek's group in the Apo rescue mission [[spoiler:how ''not'' to overload a boiler to ensure it functions properly]], Martyn, Acho, and Scott are quick to point out Owen technically told them exactly what to do, and that Bek's group consists of some of the most volatile rats in the Attic, which can only end poorly.
-->'''Owen:''' ''({{Beat}})'' Oh no, they're gonna [[spoiler:blow up the boiler]], aren't they?\\
''(Everyone else affirms this)''
* DisappearedDad: The only things Owen really knows about his father are based on what his family told him, allegedly a great scientist himself, though he later assumes it must have been a MotivationalLie.
-->'''Owen:''' I was born to one of the greatest rat tinkerers that ever existed.\\
'''Krow:''' Go on.\\
'''Owen:''' I don't really remember his name.
* TheEngineer: Owen's specialties are listed to be tinkering and engineering, and has received several tools as presents throughout the series. His love for gadgets and machinery is {{exploited|Trope}} by Bek on Day 29; Bek's team in the rescue mission for Apo winds up utilizing Owen's knowledge on [[spoiler:how the boiler worked to sabotage it, causing its destruction.]]
* ExtremeOmnivore: He's practically on par with Oli, the literal Trash Rat, for having tasted the strangest items on a server of rats, and is willing to take a bite out of anything he can get his paws on. This includes a compass, a wither rose, oxidized copper, Scott's Christmas tree, and a ''Tide Pod''. {{Deconstructed|Trope}} in the latter case, as [[EnforcedTrope cc!Owen]] immediately gives his character the Poison status effect using commands for doing so. He also refuses to eat the invasive fungus with toxic spores, but moreso because he wants to investigate it ForScience.
* FictionalDisability: The only rat without a tail in the canon era, though the character bio artwork depicts him with one and it doesn't affect the gameplay out-of-universe. He has [[HidingTheHandicap denied this]] when asked about it.
* InSeriesNickname:
** "[[WebVideo/RatMovieMysteryOfTheMayanTreasure The Big Rat Who Makes All the Rules]]", for being one of the server admins out-of-universe and one of the tallest rats in-universe.
** Water refers to Owen as their "hero" for saving them from being trapped in a cage several times. Owen, not being a fan of bugs in general, doesn't like this.
* InexplicablyTailless: Owen stands out among the cast for being the only tailless rat in-game. It's implied that he lost it to a clock in the past, [[spoiler:and his lore finale all but confirms that it was in an accident while [[TooCleverByHalf attempting an ambitious tinkering project]].]]
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: Owen has 461 older siblings.
* MysteriousCubeOfRubik: {{Implied|Trope}}; Owen picks up a Rubik's cube at some point off-screen, presumably from the toy store in New York on Day 60 (as he didn't livestream his perspective), and later mentions having spent a couple of days trying to solve it. Later on Day 62, he attempts to solve it ''while trapped in a cage'', waiting to be rescued, and proudly announces that he's solved it in the finale [[spoiler:[[SkewedPriorities while everyone's on the run]] from the Janitor after he invaded their home and figuring out how to survive the winter]].
* TheNotLoveInterest: To [[HeterosexualLifePartners Scott]]; they are affectionate and protective towards one another and even have a StargazingScene together, but the relationship is explicitly stated to be platonic.
* PsychologicalProjection: Upon being advised to carve a scarier design for his pumpkin to ward off the spirit [[HalloweenEpisode on Day 16]], Owen redesigns it to [[TraumaButton the scariest thing he can think of]] -- a clock. Martyn and Apo immediately interpret it as "ageing" and the passage of time, which Owen [[SureLetsGoWithThat goes along with]] whenever someone questions it (as he himself lives ''in'' a broken grandfather clock).
* RomanticWingman: Tries his best to give advice to Bek in her romantic pursuit of El.
* TheRuntAtTheEnd: Describes himself as such in his 3rd and 24th episodes for being the youngest of hundreds of siblings and thus not being the most nourished of the lot, though he mentions experiencing a growth spurt afterward[[note]](apparently at the age of 2 while being canonically 3)[[/note]]. It's this upbringing that has motivated him to [[TheSmartGuy think his way out of situations]] rather than brute-forcing things.
* TheSmartGuy: Being the resident scientist, Owen tends to be more knowledgeable and cautious than the other rats, though he has his moments of acting like a KnowNothingKnowItAll, and one instance of that [[CuriosityKilledTheCast got him killed]].
* TheSpock: He has a strong preference for logic and subtlety and grew up being on the cautious, rule-following side, and tends to be dismissive of intuition and struggles with emotions and tone at times; [[DownplayedTrope however]], there are several critical moments where [[NotSoAboveItAll his own emotions and pride cloud his better judgement]].
* SweetTooth: Has a large candy stash from the Halloween event on Day 16, hidden under his carpets so no other rats or spirits can find it.
* TooCleverByHalf: His FatalFlaw; he acknowledges that sometimes, his pride gets the better of him, including [[spoiler:losing his tail to an over-ambitious project involving a clock]] and his first canon death, which only happened because he thought he could think of a solution while not listening to the actual experts on related topics. [[spoiler:His insistence on fixing the FesteringFungus problem also almost kills him, as his homemade gas mask ends up being so stuffy that he almost suffocates in the smoke from the burning toxic fungus.]]
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: According to his Twitter character bio, tangerines.
* TheUnfavourite: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. Being the youngest of a giant litter and [[spoiler:not having realized his talents or any noteworthy traits yet]], he often felt overlooked and sidelined growing up, but it's clear that his mother was trying her best.

* CabinFever: Is notably more irritable when cooped up in the Mansion and unable to go out into the Garden, and it's suggested that not being able to have a hand in food production has contributed to his ChronicSelfDeprecation tendencies.

* StepfordSmiler: Accidentally shoot your best friend? Run off into self-isolation, beat yourself up about hurting another individual, and showcase [[ChronicSelfDeprecation horrifying levels of self-worth issues]] while falling into a depressive daze.
* TeamChef: Since Scott is the one in charge of the food supply as the resident Farmer, this eventually extends to cooking as well. [[spoiler:However, contrary to his belief, brewing potions is ''not'' like making soup, and when his potion-fuelled revenge plan goes outright catastrophic, Owen physically bars him from trying to brew an antidote which he doesn't know how to make anyway.]]

* NoPartyLikeADonnerParty: Tubbo is first found locked in a cupboard with Shelby, allegedly for three years as their food supply ran out in the first ten days. This, alongside the lack of [[TrademarkFavoriteFood sugar]], has apparently caused him to turn a nest of ratlings on the lower shelf into "rat burgers" for survival; but Shelby has no recollection of this. When he gets the memo that Owen is not, in fact, in charge of the rats in-universe, Tubbo runs off to form a government to fill the power vacuum.

* TunnelNetwork: Has constructed one in the Rattic, which he uses to get around all the bases within; as he says, he "lives with everyone".

!!Guests
[[folder:General]]
The guests are non-rat creatures portrayed by fellow creators from the broader Minecraft content creator community. They make one-off appearances in livestreams and episodes. They each have one canon life, with [=TommyInnit=] and Sneegsnag being the only exceptions, having three due to dying during their guest appearances.
----
* TheCameo: Each of the guests are portrayed by other content creators in one-off or voice-only appearances.
* QuestGiver: Most of the guests require the rats to help them complete some form of quest:
** Ponk: Fetch them a painting, a cushion, and a fresh apple, give them a tour of the Mansion, then smuggle them out.
** Tommy: Trade with him for various items, including in an auction.
** Seapeekay/The Fox: Wish him a happy birthday and give him presents, then complete a RiddleMeThis challenge.
** The Magical Squid:
*** Day 39: Dance for him and return to party with him at a later date.
*** Day 59: Go through his maze and start a band to play a good song for him.
** The Termites: Find them a home away from the Rattic.
** Aimsey and Guqqie: Get them food, find/make them a home for the winter, and help Guqqie make a gift to give to Aimsey.
** Sneeg is a DoubleSubversion, being a dimensionally-displaced visitor, whom the rats determine if he can and should stay in the Mansion with them, but ultimately decide he's [[FishOutOfWater unsuited]] for Mansion life. [[spoiler:However, by the time they come to this conclusion, the CrackInTheSky from which he came from has disappeared, causing the rats to have to reopen the portal in the fountain.]]
** Phil and Kara: Help them heal their wings, [[spoiler:and if not, find Kara a new home.]]
** Ghost of Christmas Past: Help Elliot Scrooge obtain the next item for his advent calendar, golden horse armour.
** Ghost of Christmas Present: Recover the vandalized facial pieces of the Woody doll in the Disney store.
** Ghost of Christmas Future: [[spoiler:Shut down the space cats' [[DoomsdayDevice "Rat Obliterator 3000 [=V3.7=]" machine]] to stop them from blowing up the Earth.]]
** Billzo: [[spoiler:Help him escape from the humans who are out to kill him.]]

Tommy alleges to be the head of his family's trading commune, flying into the Mansion through a window and stopping by to trade with the rat residents on Day 23. Naturally, being Tommy, he was first found by most of the rats trapped in a cage by the humans in the Lounge.\\
\\
Should he choose to return, Tommy has one life left. He first died after attacking a cat, then "drowned" after flying away from the Mansion into the world border.
----
* DoNotTauntCthulhu: As exemplified by his first canon death:
-->'''Tommy:''' Get the hell outta here, idiot! ''(punches a cat lurking at the foot of the sofa everyone's under)''\\
'''[=TommyInnit=] was slain by Cat'''
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: The first rat to encounter Tommy is Owen, who watches Tommy walk directly up to the Butler and getting caught instantly, from which it's very evident that Tommy is ''very'' [[LeeroyJenkins reckless]].
* TheGhost: Related; after being killed by a cat for attacking it on sight, Tommy can be heard calling for Music/{{Wilbur|Soot}}, who never appears in the series.
* HotBlooded: Tommy has a ''very'' fiery temperament; his first reaction to cats is to punch them, and he tries to confront and aggravate every human he sees, resulting in him getting captured repeatedly throughout the livestream he appears in. It's also because he dies so early on in his guest appearance that he is granted three lives in total like the rats, instead of just one life like the other guests.
* InstantlyProvenWrong: Tommy insists on trying out the cobwebbed parkour secret passageway in the walls, which is notoriously difficult even for the rats who've been living in the Mansion for the past few weeks. Cue this:
-->'''Owen:''' Alright, here you go, if you can get to the other side of this using double-jumps, then you're truly a […] parkour god.\\
'''Tommy:''' Easy. ''(overshoots at the first platform and falls off)''

** His remaining "sons" or [[WebVideo/EmpiresSMP Sheriff toys]] to El, in exchange for a heart made from pink wool bits.

----
* CollectorOfTheStrange: He's an avid collector of various items, like mysterious potions, diamonds, and the Shining Star needed to break the cat-transformation potion effects.
* ForgottenBirthday: He has spent the past 15 years in the woods alone and is bitter about no one ever visiting him to wish him a happy birthday or give him a present, even though none of the rats were aware of his presence until their first meeting on Day 39.
* {{Gaslighting}}: On Day 39, in order to obtain the Shining Star from Seapeekay the Fox, Will's group decide to "ratlight" him by pretending they visit him every year to celebrate his birthday, as opposed to this being their first meeting. To ''really'' sell it, Owen pretends to be his "fun-loving uncle" while wearing a fox head-mask, Oliver pretends to be a raccoon who's his "long-lost cousin twice removed", and Scott claims that the Fox gives out the Shining Star every year as a party favour. Thus, the rats' mission on Day 42 is to relocate them to live elsewhere so that the humans don't find out and call an exterminator on everyone.
----
* TheBait: Throughout the termites' guest appearance, Acho and the other rats suggest using them as bait for the humans to capture in cages whenever the rats are about to get in trouble.
* DudeNotFunny: In-universe; the termites are not amused when some of the rats start making jokes about their short lifespans and how they'd likely be dead by the next week.

* FourthDateMarriage: Water somehow manages to get engaged to Martyn within less than an hour into her guest appearance in the series.
-->'''Nuke:''' We've been outside– We've been out of our house for about ten minutes now and you're engaged to a rat?!
* HeightAngst: Kyle takes offense to any time he's insinuated to be small, and insists that he's average.
* MakeItLookLikeAnAccident: The rats' plan to relocate the termites has an element of this, deliberately picking out spots that are isolated enough for the rats to trap them in to die and be forgotten, or dangerous enough for the termites to be killed in.
* ParentalFavoritism: The termites' late father reportedly favoured Kyle over Nuke, resulting in their drastically different full names -- "Kyle F. Mite" and "Nuke King", respectively. Nothing has been confirmed about what their father thinks of Water, though.
* PunnyName: Nuke says that whenever he's wearing the familial crown, he's the "Nuke King".
* SheIsTheKing: Water uses the 'King' title like her brothers.
* SiblingsShareTheThrone: The termites pass their kingdom's crown between each other to show who holds the monarchial authority at the time, but all three of them appear to share power quite equally and essentially pass over the crown whenever they don't want to answer a certain question. %%However, in reality, there's a secret SuccessionCrisis going on as the three siblings are also ''squabbling'' over who gets to be the ultimate monarch.
* SuccessionCrisis: Their late grandfather never gave the termites a line of succession to the throne, so the three have settled with SiblingsShareTheThrone; however, comments have been made suggesting one is brewing beneath the surface.
* TermiteTrouble: Referenced; despite only having only very short lifespans, the termite family living in the Attic's walls manage to devour a chunk of the wall to make themselves at home, and Owen rebukes Will's idea of having them live under the big table in the Library, citing that the termites would possibly consume the wooden floors so quickly that the floor giving out under the table would be a tell-tale sign of their presence for the humans.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Water is the only one of the termite siblings who is actively friendly to the rats and doesn't insult them.

* TheRunaway: Being an orphan raised by swans and unable to live up to their expectations due to InterspeciesAdoption, Kara took flight from her initial home and eventually ended up at the Mansion during the lightning storm.

[=NPCs=] who live and/or work in the Mansion, and the main antagonists of the series. They can capture the rats and imprison them in cages located throughout the Mansion.
----
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: ZigZaggingTrope. Most of the rats refer to the humans by their titles or jobs, but the humans themselves are usually among name-basis on each other.
* PetTheDog: While they are usually perfectly fine with capturing the rats, several of the humans occasionally show kindness to them. For example, Mrs. Icraga [[spoiler:lets Scott go after his capture by the Janitor]], and the Eldest Daughter has helped the mischief of rats by fixing some of their magical mishaps.
* QuestGiver: Most of the humans function as this, openly or subtly giving the rats various quests to complete, like fetching them certain items or foodstuffs. The rats comply in an effort to not make their presence noticeable to the humans so they won't get kicked out of the house.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: Most of the Icraga household treat the rats this way. When the Maid and the Mother find half the mischief of rats gathering on the library table having a CourtroomEpisode, their reaction is to literally ''walk away''. The Janitor is the only one who considers the rats an active threat to the Mansion, while the Eldest Daughter is a PunchClockVillain who doesn't mind them personally as long as they don't barge into her business, and the Grandmother is [[TokenGoodTeammate all-round friendly to them]].
* VillainyFreeVillain: The humans are by all means reasonable to want rats out of the house -- especially the Janitor, who [[spoiler:knows the rats are sentient and can do great damage if they want to]]. However, since the story is told from the perspective of the rats, these antagonistic figures are still unpleasant to be around, and the Janitor in particular is presented as overzealous and ''terrifying'', even to the Icraga children. Additionally, the most the Janitor does wrong from a human perspective [[spoiler:before the finale]] is giving the cats extra treats and against the Chef's advice.

[[folder:The Icraga Family]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Trixtin (Mother); [=SmallishBeans=] (Father); [=GeminiTay=] (Eldest Daughter)\\
'''Names:''' Idris (Mother); Miguel (Father); Alexandra/Alex (Eldest Daughter); Aura (Youngest Daughter); Izan (son); Ramona (Grandmother)
The family residing in the Mansion. The Eldest Daughter (Alexandra) and the Son (Izan) were the only two present at home at the start of the series; the Mother (Idris), Grandmother (Ramona), and Youngest Daughter (Aura) eventually come home from the family holiday to "the capital", while the Father (Miguel) is fighting on the eastern front of an unknown war.
----
* BoardingSchool: The Twitter updates imply that the Eldest Daughter, Alexandra, attends either one such school or a university, and is home for the holidays for her appearances throughout the series.
* BrattyHalfPint: The son, Izan, takes delight in causing mayhem and angering the household staff, throws green beans across the room at meals, and is an annoying force of nature to the rats as well in his relentless pursuits. The Butler suspects -- and it's later confirmed in one of the Father's letters home -- that this is the reason he was left behind for the family holiday at the start of the series, under the belief "it will teach him some manners".
* CuteWitch: Alexandra, a PerkyGoth who brews potions and studies magic and technology.
* CoolOldLady: The Grandmother, Ramona, the oldest member of the Icraga household. While she tends to stay in her room all the time, she's the only human who is unambiguously friendly to the rats, and is more than willing to give her little friends gifts for the holidays.
* TheGhost: The Father has only ever been mentioned in the series, being at war and only keeping in contact with his family through letters home. [[spoiler:Day 64 reveals that he's coming home from the war late for the holidays, and [[LastEpisodeNewCharacter makes his debut appearance in the finale on Day 85]].]]
* GrannyClassic: The Grandmother is a kindly old woman who wears warm sweaters and takes care of the rats of the household, calling them "little friends" and leaving gifts and allowances out for them, even making them Halloween costumes, giving them unique Christmas presents, [[spoiler:and bringing them supplies to keep them warm after they're ousted from the Mansion at the end of the finale]].
* MaliciousMisnaming: The Son, being a troublesome BrattyHalfPint, spells the Butler as "Buttler" in his writings.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: The Eldest Daughter is [[EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep referred to as such in the capture messages]], and is near-ubiquitously called "the goth girl" or the "witch lady" by the rats; her actual name is referred to only in quest-books and supplementary material.
* PerkyGoth: The Eldest Daughter, Alexandra, is described to be a goth girl who dresses in dark clothing, and is willing to help fix El and Will's ForcedTransformation into cats. She also [[spoiler:takes in the rats' new crow friend Kara until her wings can be healed]], and is generally the nicest of the humans as a PunchClockVillain (or at least the nicest behind the Grandmother).
* PetTheDog: While they are usually perfectly fine with capturing the rats, several of the humans occasionally show kindness to them. For example, Mrs. Icraga [[spoiler:lets Scott go after his capture by the Janitor]], even though she's normally not the fondest of the rats.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Aura's bedroom has a pink and white striped carpet and magenta bedspread.
* ProperLady: Madame Icraga is presented as this, having trained to be this in her youth. In adulthood, she is a firm mother and mistress of the house, wears a red ribbon-bow in her hair, and while antagonistic to the rat protagonists, has been known to PetTheDog.
* PunchClockVillain: Alexandra is on relatively good terms with the rats compared with the other humans, being willing to fix any magic-related incidents caused by them. While she ''does'' capture and trap the rats as an NPC, she is otherwise content to let the rats run around the Mansion as long as they don't mess with her stuff, and even goes out of her way to teach them how to safely brew a Potion of Healing to prevent further deaths.
-->'''Eldest Daughter:''' I mean it this time, guys. Don't touch my stuff. It's hard enough convincing Mom not to put out more traps for you all as it is.
* ScatterbrainedSenior: {{Subverted|Trope}} A letter from the Maid around Day 80 reveals that the Butler and the Gardener think of the Grandmother as crazy for talking to herself, but she herself is skeptical that the Grandmother is as senile as she appears… which is indeed far from the truth.
* TokenGoodTeammate: The Grandmother is the only member of the household who doesn't trap the rats in cages and is on good terms with them. {{Downplayed|Trope}} with the Eldest Daughter, who is a PunchClockVillain who ''does'' trap them as an NPC, but is willing to help them whenever she plays an active role in the story.
* UnnamedParent: {{Subverted|Trope}}. The Icraga parents are only known by their surname for much of the series, but their given names are revealed in conversation during the finale.

[[folder:The Household Staff]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Declan[[note]]a member of the [=NoName=] staff[[/note]] (Janitor); Erinreyn (Maid)\\
'''Names:''' Cassandra (Chef); Declan (Janitor); Haru (Maid); Kamon (Gardener)
The humans working for the Icraga family. The unnamed Butler, the Chef (Cassandra), and the Maid (Haru) were the only two present at home at the start of the series; the Janitor and the Gardeners are later introduced on Day 19, to much concern from the rats.
----
* ArtificialStupidity: The Gardener relentlessly pursues rats to the point he doesn't just [[spoiler:walk into the pond and sink like a rock]] chasing Jimmy on Day 19, but Jimmy is able to exploit this for long enough to [[spoiler:''drown and non-canonically kill'' him.]] He does so again on Day 57, where Martyn exploits this to lure him into walking into the Lounge's fireplace to burn.
* CassandraTruth: The Janitor is one of the few humans who are aware [[spoiler:the rats are sentient beings]], and immediately figures out [[spoiler:the rats are behind the explosion of the Boiler Room]] on Day 29. The knowledge of [[spoiler:the rats' sentience]] only makes him ''more'' aggressive towards them.
* TheDreaded: The Janitor, for his aggression and much higher rat-catching capability than the other human [=NPCs=], to the point several of the rats devise a plan to oust him from the Mansion altogether. [[spoiler:Him being called BackForTheFinale is met with a MassOhCrap by the entire rat population.]]
* DrinkingOnDuty: The Janitor spends much of Day 29 downing alcohol by the bottle in the Wine Cellar near the Boiler Room, so much that the rats mostly just watch him in dismay, while Will suggests [[spoiler:sabotaging the Wine Cellar as revenge]] because the man clearly seems to enjoy his booze. It's later {{exploited|Trope}} as [[spoiler:Will also later suggests using this as "[[AlcoholInducedIdiocy evidence]]" to {{frame|up}} the Janitor for destroying the boiler before being PutOnABus.]]
* DudeWheresMyRespect: On Day 10, the Chef, Cassandra, writes about being frustrated about how she spent seven years at culinary school training for her job, only to be hired by a family that doesn't appreciate her cooking[[note]]with the family leaving the food to go cold, the Son throwing green beans across the room at meals, food disappearing at night, etc.[[/note]], and few of the other household staff respect her. She has considered quitting her job because of this and [[DrowningMySorrows drowning her sorrows]] in melon juice she doesn't have.[[note]]She couldn't do so with alcohol because the bar was closed until the Father came home.[[/note]] Apo finds this note and gets Bek and Scott to help him give her some presents and the melon juice she wanted, albeit with some jokes about how the rat protagonists are [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial definitely not responsible]] for the food disappearances and not part of Cassandra's causes for grief. The rats' gifts end up causing Cassandra to stay and keep working at the Mansion.
* EvilRedhead: The Janitor, an aggressive human NPC feared by the entire mischief of rats for being able to capture them as long as he can see them, unlike other humans who have to chase the rats themselves. He's also seen unleashing MisplacedRetribution on at least one occasion, and is one of the few humans with practically zero redeeming qualities.
* FieryRedhead: The Janitor is an [[EvilRedhead antagonistic figure]] with red hair and is particularly trigger-happy when it comes to catching rats, being more skilled at it than the other humans. [[spoiler:When he is called off leave and back to the Mansion by Mr. Icraga [[BackForTheFinale in the finale]], he goes on a rampage out for vengeance.]]
* ForgottenBirthday: In the Chef's note on Day 10, she writes about how no one except her coworker, the Maid, acknowledged her birthday the previous week.
* HatedByAll: The Janitor is [[TheDreaded feared]] and hated by all of the rats for his aggression, [[spoiler:to the point Will, with help from Bek, devises the plan to blow up the Boiler Room to drive him out of the Mansion, in revenge for him kidnapping Apo.]]
* InSeriesNickname:
** Oli refers to the Butler as "Papa Caspacito", the name the other rats have been using to refer to the Father.
** Martyn refers to the Janitor as "Pan Man", as his net used to catch the rats resembles a large frying pan[[note]]which it is in-game -- a skillet from the Farmer's Delight mod[[/note]].
* MisplacedRetribution: After [[spoiler:the destruction of the Boiler Room]] on Day 29, the Janitor decides to [[spoiler:capture a random rat in a cage and start screaming at them]]. Unfortunately for him, [[spoiler:Scott was part of the group rescuing Apo from the Van and not the group that caused the explosion, and opposed the plan when he heard it]]. Even Mrs. Icraga, the Janitor's boss, thinks he's being too high-strung about his job and orders for him to go on paid leave, though it's unlikely she knew [[spoiler:the full truth of the rats]].
* NoodleIncident: A note from the Chef to the Maid found on Day 3 alludes to one:
-->[[LetUsNeverSpeakOfThisAgain We do NOT reminisce]] about the tomato incident.
* OldRetainer: {{Implied|Trope}}; the Butler is a white-haired man who is angered when the Son stole a set of fine, valuable cutlery around Day 2, because he remembers when Mrs. Icraga used the set to eat while training to be a ProperLady, presumably in her youth and before she became a mother. The journal entry in which he chronicles this is also titled "Day 11426", suggesting that he's been working as part of the household for about 31.3 years.
* OneHeadTaller: Day 64 reveals that the Chef is about half a head taller than the Maid.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: The Butler's true name remains unknown throughout the series, and has only been referred to by [[EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep his job title]] or a nickname.
* PetTheDog: The Butler allows Owen to help him fix up the destruction in the Lounge caused during Billzo's angry rampage on Day 62.
* PutOnABus: Mrs. Icraga orders for the Janitor to pack up and go on paid leave a mere ten days after his debut when [[spoiler:he captures and starts yelling at Scott, accusing him of blowing up the Boiler Room]]. [[spoiler:He comes BackForTheFinale when Mr. Icraga calls him ''off'' leave.]]
* {{Sadist}}: By the finale, [[spoiler:the Janitor]] takes absolute ''glee'' in hunting down the rats, going as far as to taunt them verbally while [[spoiler:smashing up the furniture all over the Mansion to get to them.]]
-->'''[[spoiler:The Janitor]]:''' I'm coming for! I'm coming for you!
* TookALevelInKindness: [[spoiler:After finding out the rats are sentient and willing to help out the humans when need be, the Maid writes to set up a formal meeting between them on Day 82 in the Laundry Room; the two sides manage to come to a mutual understanding where she agrees to stop catching them, and says she's fine with them living in the Mansion as long as they're not being disruptive. Of course, [[HopeSpot this quickly becomes moot]] when the Father comes home from the war…]]
* ViolentGlaswegian: The Janitor has a fairly thick Scottish accent and is TheDreaded who is willing to inflict MisplacedRetribution, and [[spoiler:when his beach holiday is "ruined" by the rats in the finale, his resultant rat-catching rampage ends up causing copious amounts of property damage, with him hacking tables and doors to pieces.]]

[[folder:Oy and Oreo]]
Two tuxedo black cats owned by the humans, first introduced on Day 10. While the humans typically cannot directly kill the rats, the cats ''can'' do direct damage to the point of death. [[spoiler:When one such incident occurs to Scott about midway through the series, he devises a revenge plan in an attempt to kill both cats, of which the results were [[{{Pun}} catastrophic]].]]
----
* CatsAreMean: The Mansion's two cats, dubbed 'Oy' and 'Oreo' by the rats, almost always chase and attack the rat protagonists on sight, but can be distracted with food and oddly enough, {{music|SoothesTheSavageBeast}}.
* InSeriesNickname:
** The cats' names given by the humans, if any, are unknown, so [[OnlyKnownByTheirNickname the rats nickname them 'Oy' and 'Oreo']].
** During the Day 47 Cat-astrophe, Jimmy and Bek immediately start coming up with nicknames to refer to the magically tampered clone cats to tell them apart, like "Buttslider", "Baba", and "Chunk/Chonk" (for the big one)… not that it matters much from the unpredictability of the magic.
* InconsistentSpelling: One of the clone cats is nicknamed 'Chunk' by Jimmy due to its large size; however, since virtually all dialogue in the series is verbal, it's unconfirmed whether the nickname is spelt 'Chunk' or its more memetic form, 'Chonk'.
* MegaNeko: The clone cats can grow to be as tall as a human when sitting down, or be tall enough to reach humans' door handles at shoulder height.
-->'''Jimmy:''' ''(on a clone cat that grew to be as big as the Laundry Room)'' That is the ''ultimate'' Chunk, oh my gosh.
* MusicSoothesTheSavageBeast: While the cats are usually hostile to the rats, Jimmy has attempted, and in some cases managed, to distract them by singing to them, so that the other rats can escape safely. Among the tunes, the chorus of "Three Little Birds" by Music/Maroon5 seems to be the most effective. [[https://www.tumblr.com/ndn-craft/699143364932665344/jimmy-the-cat-whisperer?source=share They even dance along to the music sometimes!]]
* PintSizedPowerhouse: The clone cats can shrink to be as small as the termite guests, but can bite and scratch with all the strength of a normal-sized cat, dealing at much as 4 hearts of damage in one go.
-->'''Owen:''' You should ''not'' hit as hard as you do.
* RightHandAttackDog: The cats are this to the Janitor during his time in the Mansion, leading him to the rats' location should they track them down, and actively attacking the rats whenever they have a chance to.
* {{Sizeshifter}}: The clone cats can grow or shrink in size to their liking.
* StockAnimalDiet: The cats can be fed milk as a distraction, among other foodstuffs.

%%Please default to they/them for all chats because they embody many individuals.
----
* AudienceParticipation: To a smaller extent than many other [=SMPs=] for the most part, but creator-characters will occasionally ask their chat for input, or tell them off if they're getting a bit too rowdy.
* TheBlackDeath: Allegedly, Tubbo's stream chat fleas carry the bubonic plague.
* BloodKnight: Throughout Day 1, many of Acho's stream chat fleas call for him to kill various other rats for even mild transgressions.
* DeadpanSnarker: Are ''very'' prone to snarking about the situation at hand [[FunnyBackgroundEvent in the background]]… if they haven't descended into their own brand of chaos.
* DependingOnTheWriter: The chats are the in-universe manifestation of anywhere from dozens to thousands of individuals at once, so their characterization can be highly inconsistent. Even then, the chats ''in general'' may act differently depending on the perspective they are viewing.
* InformedAbility: Canonically, they can take on multiple forms, usually fleas but alternatively gears for Owen and mud clumps for Scott. However, due to the technical limitations of Minecraft, this does not carry over into the actual game.
* IntellectualAnimal: The flea-chats all have human-level intelligence; they are clever enough to understand and realize when they or their affiliated rat are in danger, and tend to be vocal about their opinions on the situation at hand.
* TheOmniscient: To a degree; as the audience and viewers, ''in theory'', the chats know everything that has been conveyed or presented in livestreams or episodes, and can freely access different perspectives to know what's going on with every POV character on the SMP. In practice, the chats only utilize this ability when they have to, such as in response to the creator-character consulting them for advice, and how much everyone actually knows depends on the individual.
* StudioAudience: A variant. While the audience isn't physically present and communicates through text instead of through audio, they're treated as if they're speaking out loud. Other than that, they fulfill pretty much the same role.
* TheVoice: Or, more accurately, the many, MANY voices.
* YouAreWorthHell: While trapped with Apo in the Janitor's Van on Day 29, Apo states that should the Van start driving away, he'll climb up to the top of the Van and count down from ten so the fleas can escape and find another rat companion. Practically all of the fleas ''refuse'', saying they'll stay with him to the very end and die with him if they have to… and vehemently hold on when he ''does'' start counting prematurely or bluff-threaten to steal hand sanitizer from the Van. El is the "Diplo-rat" of the group. She started out in the Play Room with Jimmy and Krow. A former "aristo-rat", El left home in pursuit of her dreams to become an artist.\\
\\

'''Personal pronouns:''' He/Him\\
'''Specialty:''' Safety\\

----
* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: {{Justified|Trope}}; Martyn and Owen mention on Day 2 that Krow's red fur streaks were dyed using tomato paste, while Krow claims it's dyed from fox blood.
-->''I'm the S to the A to the N-T-A\\

Because I'm tuggin' on the reindeer\\
Humans better steer clear\\

While he alleges to have come from "Frank's farm", in reality, he's a human from a world like ours, who was sent there through the datastream to search for and destroy the elusive L.O.O.T. Shard of the world.\\
\\
Martyn has one life left. He sacrificed his first life so Oli could win his court case against Apo on Day 36; he lost his second life by being mauled by a cat while trying to save Oliver on Day 57, and was burnt to death in the chimney trying to save Philza and Kara on Day 59. However, he previously made a [[LeonineContract deal]] with a spirit during the Halloween event on Day 16, who gave him a fourth life.
----

* AmbiguouslyRelated: Owen's mother alleges his father to have been a great inventor and scientist, which Owen later grows disinclined to believe due to a lack of evidence in writings and inventions.

* MassiveNumberedSiblings: Owen has 461 older siblings.

* FaintInShock: Tubbo apparently faints and drops whenever he hears a bell. Out-of-universe, it's because his game crashes whenever it happens.
* InSeriesNickname: He's often referred to as "Tub-rat".
This also causes him to [[TheSecretOfLongPorkPies trick Bek into engaging in cannibalism without her foreknowledge]], to just about ''everyone else's'' disgust.
* LaResistance: Tubbo declares himself the leader and representative of "the Ratsistance" (or "the Ratbellion") against Owen, whom he assumes is "the big rat that makes all the rules" in-universe, and whom he calls "an evil dictator" for not wanting to bring harm to the humans and the cats in the face of extermination. When he gets the memo that Owen is not, in fact, in charge of the rats in-universe, Tubbo runs off to form a government to fill the power vacuum.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: According to his Twitter character bio, [[SweetTooth sugar]]. Not sweets, ''sugar''.
* TunnelNetwork: Has constructed one in the Rattic, which he uses to get around all the bases within; as he says, he "lives with everyone".
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Tubbo is quick to infer and connect the dots that the humans introduced cats to the Mansion on Day 10 in an attempt to exterminate the rat population, but his attempts at protecting the rats -- by trying to ''kill'' the humans and the cats -- are seen as overzealous at best.
* WildCard: Tubbo is ''extremely'' prone to starting conflicts for no reason and is, in essence, a menace to rat society. The first thing he does on the server is try to start an uprising, and it goes to the point Apo strongly suspects that he might have "ratbies" (rat rabies).

* TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody: PlayedForHorror; after their ForcedTransformation into a cat on Day 39, Will starts gaining more cat-like traits, including being more combative and having a distinctively feline appetite preference, to the point of having to visibly resist eating their own close rat friends… and mentions on Day 57 that they still have occasional intrusive thoughts about [[ImAHumanitarian the latter]] despite being returned to their original form and ''being vegetarian''.

'''Preferred names:''' Water, Nuke, and Kyle\\
'''Personal pronouns:''' She/They (Water); He/Him (Nuke and Kyle)\\
'''Species:''' Termite
Three termite siblings who burrowed their way into the Attic walls and have been living there their entire lives, i.e. for a week at most. Their grandfather told them before he passed away that they were destined to own the Mansion, so they are quite angry about how the rats "destroyed [their] house".
-->'''Nuke:''' I will live out of spite, do not test me.

->'''[=IGNs=]:''' aimsey; guqqie\\
'''Preferred names:''' Aimsey and Guqqie\\
'''Personal pronouns:''' Any pronouns (Aimsey); She/They (Guqqie)\\
'''Species:''' Rabbit
Termites, Aimsey and Guqqie are a pair of rabbits who used to live with Seapeekay and answered his riddles, but in the midst of a wolf infestation in the forest, the two were left homeless and came to the Mansion on Day 51 to seek shelter for the winter. Found huddling for warmth under Scott's scarecrow in the former wheat fields, the rats' mission is to find or make them a new home to settle in.
----
* BetaCouple: The two rabbits, having known each other for a long time already, get together with much sweetness and fairly little drama. Martyn remarks that the relationship "goes better than Eloise and Bek".
* CutenessProximity: Guqqie has this to say about the rats:
-->'''Guqqie:''' You're all so small and cute; I want to put you all in my pocket. You're babas.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: Aimsey writes off Guqqie's at-times insensitivity as [[NoSocialSkills over-friendliness]] and this.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: In Guqqie's words, they'll eat anything but carrots.
* InterspeciesRomance: Aimsey makes repeated attempts to jokingly flirt with the human women of the Mansion, though it's clear that their heart belongs to Guqqie.
* KilledOffscreen: [[spoiler:In an ''WebVideo/AreaUnknownSMP'' stream, AU!Guqqie confirms that they both were eaten by wolves sometime after meeting the rats.]]
* NoSocialSkills: While introducing themselves to the rats, one of the first things that comes out of Guqqie's mouth is to say their leporid ears and tails are superior to those of the rats; she later also asks why Acho is purple without provokation, to nearly everyone else's dismay.
-->'''Scott:''' You can't just ask people why they're purple!
* RelationshipUpgrade: Aimsey and Guqqie have initially known each other for a long time and lived together, but it takes until after they meet the rats for them to get together.
* TheScream: Aimsey is very prone to screaming loudly in panic whenever one of the humans trap them in a cage or chases them.
* StockAnimalDiet: Subverted with Guqqie; Acho tries to feed them and Aimsey carrots because he read that rabbits like them, but Guqqie [[DoesNotLikeSpam protests this]] and points out not everything read in books is accurate.

->'''IGN:''' Sneegsnag\\
'''Preferred name:''' Sneeg\\
'''Personal pronouns:''' He/Him\\
'''Species:''' Unknown (Rats); Inchling (home world)
Sneeg is a DimensionalTraveler who arrived in the Rats world via a CrackInTheSky on Day 57. Wandering in search of a new home after everyone seemingly disappeared overnight from the initial Origins world, he saw a shining light, Riptide-tridented towards it, and fell through the portal. He is enthusiastic about hanging out with some friends of a similar size to him for once, even if some of them think he's an alien, a bug, or a fairy (by Bek), and eventually conclude he's a moth.\\
\\
Should he choose to return, Sneeg has one canon life left. He was mauled by cats twice throughout his visit.
----
* CharacterOverlap: Sneeg is a DimensionalTraveler who is native to the ''WebVideo/OriginsSMP''.
* DimensionalTraveler: Arrived at the Mansion through a CrackInTheSky above the Garden's now-frozen fountain, having sat around in nothingness before falling through the portal. As Martyn questions him about this during his stay, though, Sneeg is ''not'' from the datastream.
* FallingIntoThePlot: Is first introduced falling out of a CrackInTheSky and onto the fountain in the Garden.
* FictionalDisability: Despite being a WingedHumanoid, Sneeg cannot fly unless he uses his Riptide "fork". {{Enforced|Trope}} as it's a Minecraft skin.
* FishOutOfWater: Beyond the YourMagicsNoGoodHere, during his day-long stay, Sneeg has to get used to "human-sized" people being unfriendly to him (as opposed to mostly being his friends like in ''Origins''), the Chisel and Bits mod (in which the rats can build miniature, rat-sized builds), and that YourMagicsNoGoodHere.
* InnocentAliens: Sneeg is considered to be an alien in the Rats world by some of its inhabitants, not resembling any animal[[note]](although with some moth-like traits like having antennae and a fondness for lantern-light)[[/note]]. That being said, he's nothing but perfectly amiable throughout his guest appearance, as long as no one tries to take his trident from him.
* InterspeciesRomance: To some extent; he makes several comments throughout his guest appearance about Martyn, a human trapped in a rat's body, attractive.
* NotQuiteFlight: Owns a trident (or "fork") enchanted with Riptide, which effectively allows him to achieve temporary flight in the snowy weather.
* ShoutOut: His skin is inspired by Lancer, a character from ''VideoGame/{{Deltarune}}''.
* YourMagicsNoGoodHere: In his home world, Sneeg can climb up walls directly as part of his Inchling powers; in the ''Rats'' world, he loses access to this power and has to rely on {{Double Jump}}s like the rats, which he describes as being similar to learning to walk again.

Two crows who were found to be trapped in
Crows, the chimney on Day 59, and are then rescued by the rats. They were launched into the structure after a lightning strike, before which Phil was looking for his equally dimensionally-displaced friends (including Sneeg) and Kara was simply living and flying alone in search of a new home.
----
* CharacterOverlap: Philza is a DimensionalTraveler who is native to the ''WebVideo/OriginsSMP''. A lightning strike may or may not have been involved in the dimension travel.
* DimensionalTraveler: Phil recalls flying through the realms in search of his friends, everything going black, him landing in a snowy environment, and a lightning strike which caused him and Kara to meet and their wings to break.
* FoulWaterfowl: The swans who raised Kara certainly didn't show a lot of love to her in her childhood, and when Kara swipes at Phil for [[spoiler:taking the one phantom membrane they have managed to obtain for himself]], it's attributed to her swan upbringing.
* InterspeciesAdoption: Kara the crow was raised by swans, but ran away before her debut in the ''Rats'' storyline. [[spoiler:At the end of her guest appearance, she's taken in by Alexandra until she's healed at the rats' request.]]
* InterspeciesRomance: {{Implied|Trope}}. Phil has often been caught looking wistfully at the human Mrs. Icraga through a spyglass. It's much more understandable on a meta level, considering Mrs. Icraga is voiced by his real-life wife.
* TheRunaway: Being an orphan raised by swans and unable to live up to their expectations due to InterspeciesAdoption, Kara took flight from her initial home and eventually ended up at the Mansion during the lightning storm.
* TheSpock: Being out of the loop for most of the series, Phil is reluctant to partake in the supernatural shenanigans the rats increasingly start to get into during his guest appearance, only doing so because it can fix his wings and allow him to leave and be with his friends again.
-->'''Phil:''' I fail to see how squeeing gets a squid to show up here.
* StuckInAChimney: The two crows are first introduced to be in such a position, surrounded by a burning fire. The rats have to gather rope to get them out, and even then, climbing ''up'' to the chimney to get down is a chore in itself, several of the rats themselves struggle with climbing ''out'' after the rescue, and Martyn straight-up burns to death in the process.

* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Billzo alleges to be from a mansion that he owns and came to the Mansion where the rats reside in search of property. However, [[spoiler:his aforementioned "backstory" is a complete lie to hide his DarkAndTroubledPast.]]

!!Humans and Other Antagonists
[[folder:The Humans in General]]
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: Most of
Goat; the Icraga household treat the rats this way.

----
* BoardingSchool: The Twitter updates imply that the
Family (Mother, Father, Eldest Daughter, Alexandra, attends either one such school or a university, and is home for the holidays for her appearances throughout the series.
* PerkyGoth: The Eldest
Youngest Daughter, Alexandra, is described to be a goth girl who dresses in dark clothing, and is willing to help fix El and Will's ForcedTransformation into cats. She also [[spoiler:takes in Son, Grandmother), the rats' new crow friend Kara until her wings can be healed]], and is generally the nicest of the humans as a PunchClockVillain (or at least the nicest behind the Grandmother).

The knowledge of [[spoiler:the rats' sentience]] only makes him ''more'' aggressive towards them.

* InSeriesNickname:

* InSeriesNickname:

* DoomsdayDevice: The "Rat Obliterator 3000 [=V3.7=]", a laser contraption they plan to use to destroy the Earth and the rat world, or as Krow kindly puts it, it's "a genocide machine"; the rats' mission is to destroy it or otherwise render it unusable.
* FurryConfusion: {{Lampshade|Hanging}}d; the humanoid "space cats" are accompanied by regular cats that still walk on four legs. Martyn differentiates them by calling them the "new cats" and "old cats", respectively.
* StockAnimalDiet: They repeatedly proclaim their love for fish and fish-related foods, like fish stew. They even power their DoomsdayDevice with "fish juice".
* TimeBomb: The "Rat Obliterator 3000 [=V3.7=]" is set to destroy the Earth 20 minutes after its activation by the cats; {{justified|Trope}} with the cats gleefully announcing how little time the rats have left until their home world ''and their lives'' are to be "obliterated". The rats overload the Fish Juice Fueller in the first 5 minutes, spend the next 10 minutes electing the "Ruler of Dance" to shut down the core, and the last 5 minutes shutting down the satellite and the death laser.

[[folder:Chat]]
[[FromBeyondTheFourthWall The audience and viewers of livestreams on the SMP]]. Most, if not all, of the POV characters can hear them and address them directly, and they primarily manifest as fleas on the server, barring a few exceptions. They can't interact with the world directly, but their influence is felt all throughout the server.
[[DiscussedTrope Luckily, it never comes down to that]].
