According to data logs obtained from expeditions, they became active and destroyed mankind after an event known as an awakening. During the game, they're mostly dormant when you bring the fight to them.

* GenericDoomsdayVillain: They're initially presented as this, being {{Eldritch Abomination}}s who destroyed humanity without reason. Then [[spoiler:you encounter the Gold Elder, who gives a bit of reason as to why they might have did this. Later on, during the Asteroids quest, it's revealed that they're actually beings called Semu created by a {{Precursor|s}} race. They were meant to be benevolent but got corrupted by unknown forces]].
