** The Fire Nation royalty wanted to destroy the Avatar. But the first Avatar himself originated from the people who were the ancestors of the Fire Nations.

Comes the [[WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra sequel series]], the Fire Nation ends up being the ''only'' faction that doesn't do anything villainous, and its members regularly offer aids to the protagonists. Jerkass Woobie is a YMMV trope.

* JerkassWoobie: Though he's quite smug and elitist, it's easy to feel somewhat sorry for him when Zuko, Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee completely wreck and possibly burn down his house. What's worse is that he'll likely have to deal with the consequences when his father finds out.

* CurbStompCushion: After killing the Moon Spirit, Iroh attacks him and his soldiers. While the four soldiers are quickly taken down, Zhao at least manages to block one of Iroh's blasts and run away.

* FauxAffablyEvil: Acts politely to Zuko and Iroh when he's first introduced, but his manners towards the former quickly prove to be an act. Even when he attempts to act polite to Iroh, he still can't help but belittle him for his failure to take Ba Sing Se.

Even when he attempts to act polite to Iroh, he still can't help but belittle him for his failure to take Ba Sing Se. He also often has a hint of sarcasm in his voice when he refers to ''General'' Iroh.

** He also demonstrates a few quite moves with one of the swords, suggesting that Zhao might also have some talent in swordsmanship.

* InASingleBound: Like Zuko and Azula, Zhao has incredible jumping abilities. During his fight with Aang, he effortlessly jumps from ship to ship.

* LightningBruiser: His fire blasts are far larger than most other firebenders, and he can shoot several of them in quick succession.

* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Zhao's slaying of the Moon Spirit -- [[AllForNothing which was revived shortly afterwards anyway]] -- pisses off the Ocean Spirit, which possesses Aang and wipes out the Fire Navy fleet, making the invasion of the Northern Water Tribe a failure. While this didn't severely impact the Fire Nation's ability to continue the war it was the biggest defeat the Fire Nation had possibly ever suffered in the Hundred Year War by that point and a huge strategic blow.

While this didn't severely impact the Fire Nation's ability to continue the war it was the biggest defeat the Fire Nation had possibly ever suffered in the Hundred Year War by that point and a huge strategic blow. To make this worse, Zhao's navy mostly had the upper hand against the northern defenders and quite possibly would've won the battle the regular way had Zhao not done this.

* StarterVillain: Zhao is significantly more powerful and skilled than the average Firebender, but severly hampered by a lack of discipline and restraint. And he is a genuinely exceptional tactician, but hampered by his own ego and arrogance. And while he has the vast resources of the Fire Nation at his disposal, he also lacks any sort of serious personal connection to the Gaang. All of this serves to make him a credible threat to the heroes while still leaving room for later villains to be more effective by virtue of surpassing Zhao in one area or the other.

** He also points out that Colonel Shinu was severely under-utilizing the capabilities of the Yuyan archers. Given that they were EliteMooks with ImprobableAimingSkills, and Shinu apparently used them as little more than guards at an already heavily fortified military base, it's easy to agree with Zhao's statement.

* SmallRoleBigImpact: Though he only appears OnceASeason, he's the one who ultimately introduces war balloons and airships to the Fire Nation military.
* VillainDecay: In his first appearance he's a rather menacing antagonist who ultimately walked away happy even when his army was mostly defeated. By his second appearance he's mostly subservient and sycophantic towards Azula, and doesn't even personally encounter the Gaang. In his last appearance he's found powerless during an eclipse and cowed into giving Aang, Sokka, and Toph directions to Ozai; though since this was part of a trap set by Azula, he technically played his part effectively.

* GoodBehaviorPoints: In "Suki, Alone", a villainous one, he awards Biyu for betraying Suki and her fellow prisoners by giving her privileges like better food, a new uniform and a fancy room.

to:

* GoodBehaviorPoints: In "Suki, Alone", a villainous one, he awards Biyu for betraying Suki and her fellow prisoners by giving her privileges like better food, a new uniform and a fancy room. He also lets Chit Sang off the hook after he identified (falsely) the guard who orchestrated the first escape attempt.

* KarmaHoudini: Somehow avoids Azula and Ozai's wrath both for the escape of several important prisoners, and for ordering his guards to cut the line while Azula was on the gondola. According to Mai in the finale, he even got to keep his job with little to no punishment.
* NonActionBigBad: He relies on his prison guards and EliteMooks to do the actual fighting for him. When Suki beats up his bodyguards and gets to him, he's completely at her mercy. Chit Sang also restrains him pretty easily on the gondola when he gets free of his binds.

* VillainousRespect: When he explains Iroh's escape to Zuko, he speaks of Iroh's power with a hint of awe in his voice. Clearly Iroh proved that he isn't the disgraceful empty shell that Poon thought him to be.

* BadBoss: Will throw his own men overboard if they prove an inconvenience. The next sentence, where he asks the next guard to find someone he hadn't thrown overboard, indicates that this is a habit of his.

* PragmaticVillainy: Even if the song predicting doom is the reason he gives for not following Team Avatar and the nomads into the Cave of Two Lovers, the idea to just seal them in is a pretty good one since taking tanks into a cave isn't the best idea. In his first appearance he immediately blocks Team Avatar's only escape route when they accidentally stumble into his units camp.

* PsychoticSmirk: He gives the Gaang a nasty smile when they accidentally wander into his campsite and Sokka attempts to intimidate him with a bluff.

to:

* TheWorfEffect: In their first appearance Iroh effortlessly defeats nearly a whole squad of them. Zuko also defeats three of them, including their captain (granted, he wasn't facing Zuko).

to:

* PlayingWithFire: Colonel Mongke is the only firebender in the group.group, and he's skilled enough to trade blows with (an albeit injured and exhausted) Iroh.

* TheyKilledKennyAgain: In their debut a few of them appeared to be killed in the battle with the Gaang, with Yeh-Lu being buried in rubble from his own explosive ([[DeadHatShot with his helmet rolling by afterwards]]), and Kahchi falling off the same cliff that Chin fell to his death from. Despite this, all members show up again in a few episodes no worse for wear.

* ToppledStatue: Kahchi slices through the statue of Chin the Conqueror with his halberd. Yeh-Lu also blows up the rest of the shrine to him for good measure.

* EvilOldFolks: He was already getting on in years when he murdered Kya.

* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: None of them show up again after Zhao conscripts them for his invasion of the North Pole. Presuembly, they were either killed during the battle or by the vengeful Ocean Spirit.

* TheDragon: He could be considered the closest thing Zuko had at his most villainous in Season 1, since he's the highest ranking member of the crew besides Zuko and Iroh (who is more of a mentor and rarely takes part in Zuko's conflicts).

* JerkassHasAPoint: He was absolutely in the right to kick Zuko out of his party after he saw the prince pick a fight with his best friend and break things in the process.
* NoGuyWantsAnAmazon: He actually starts to like Azula, until she scares him with her firebending (even turning the torch behind them blue and bigger) and imperialism that is.

* MythicalMotifs: Dragons, fitting given they were the original [[PlayingWithFire Firebenders]]. Even after they were hunted to near extinction over the course of the 100 Year War, they still featured prominently in decorations like in Zuko's room, Iroh's teapot, and several in the Fire Lords throne room. Before and after the war several individuals used some as [[AHorseOfADifferentColor mounts]] in the same vein as the Air Nomads did Sky Bisons.

* TheBrute: Unusual example (not often you'd see this overlap with CuteBruiser), but she fits by virtue of being the most physically effective of Azula's entourage, being a BareFistedMonk that uses [[AntiMagic Chi-Blocking to leave Benders defenseless]], and is (comparatively) the least intelligent of her group.

* FragileSpeedster: Their ships are much smaller and faster than the usual Fire Nation ones, making them more suited to coastal raids.

** On a broader level, they are also somewhat unique amongst the other nations, in that whereas the Earth Kingdom is a loose federation of separate states and kings under the largely symbolic authority of the Earth King, the Water Tribes are entirely separate entities with their own leadership and laws, and the Air Nomads had no leadership outside of a council of monks at each major temple, the Fire Nation has a fully centralized power system. They have a single, codified set of laws, a single bureaucracy, and a single combined military under a single monarch who rules autocratically.

** To Azula in almost ''every'' way. Both were the more prominent members of the Fire Nation and are the ones who succeeded in conquering Ba Sing Se. In a way, they are feared in battle by many of their opponents due to their combat skills (Firebending for Azula, Chi-Blocking for Ty Lee). But while Azula is an AxCrazy {{Jerkass}} who is serious most of the time and has NoSocialSkills, Ty Lee is a straight up NiceGirl who has a more kind nature and is able to attract a lot of dudes and befriend her former enemies.
** She also is this to Suki. Both are relative BadassNormal’s who hold their own without the need for bending, have been flirtatious to Sokka and are members of the [[spoiler:Kyoshi Warriors]]. What differs both of them is that Suki is an OfficialCouple with Sokka, weilds fans as weapons, the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors and is assertive and straightforward. Ty Lee on the other hand has a VillainousCrush on Sokka, doesn’t weild a weapon (tho she does have chi-blocking), a [[CoDragons Co-Dragon]] to Azula’s group (which eventually turns into TheLancer for the [[spoiler:Kyoshi Warriors]]), and is naive and silly.

Added DiffLines:

* AmbiguouslyBi: Ty Lee seems to show an interest in Sokka, but also seems to show an interest in Azula. On Ember Island, she prefers Azula's company to the company of several attractive boys who really like her. She also tells Azula that she's the smartest, prettiest, most perfect girl in the world. More than once. This is also muddled up by implications that Ty Lee wasn't Azula's actual friend and was just sucking up to her the entire time, and the fact that the comics show Ty Lee as extremely traumatized by Azula's "friendship".
