*** As the comic started out as a tie-in to WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM, Sonic’s name was Sonic Hedgehog, rather than just Sonic with "the Hedgehog" as a title. Later "Sonic" was revealed to be a nickname. His first name was considered too embarrassing to be mentioned, although his father let it slip that his middle name was Maurice. Creator/KenPenders later explained his first name was supposed to be Olgilvie, but this was never actually mentioned in the comics themselves (and he eventually left, with the new writers not particularly eager to capitalize on his idea). According to Creator/IanFlynn, Sonic eventually legally changed his name offscreen, finally making Sonic his real name. Following the 2013 ContinuityReboot, Sonic's name was reverted to what it was in the games.

Now a disambiguation. Can't tell if replacement or others apply.

*** Due to a mix-up on the comic staff's part, Metal Sonic was initially called Mecha Sonic, the name of a separate (but similar) game character. To add to the confusion, Sonic's roboticized form was called Mecha Sonic as well.

* In the Franchise/Alien comics, the scientific name of the Xenomorphs is changed from "Internecivus raptus" to "Linguafoeda acheronsis".
* In Film/BillAndTedsBogusJourney, Bill and Ted name their sons after each other but in the Creator/Marvel adaptation names each boy after his father. The trade paperbacks corrected this though.
* ComicBook/DastardlyAndMuttley: Dick Dastardly and Muttley are renamed Richard "Dick" Atcherly and Dudley "Mutt" Muller.
* ComicBook/Norby: Several Trope examples, as Ing the Ingrate is introduced as Ing the Merciless. This epitet is one of several that Ing used in the novels and the comic, but the comic introduces him as the Merciless and is persistent with the name, while the novel preferred the Ingrate. The salesman calls Norby an R-2 robot, instead of an R2, and also says the spacer who repaired Norby was named [=MacGillicuddy=], rather than the novel's [=McGillicuddy=] (it is correctly rendered when Admiral Yobo says his name in the second adaptation). The Space Command agent distressed by Jeff breaking the kitchen computers, Gridlow, is changed to Widlow. The Inventors Union that wants to take Norby apart is changed to an Inventors Cartel to sound more sinister.
* In ComicBook/RainbowBrite:
** Twink's name is changed to Twinkle for similar reasons to his change in the Western Animation folder. Wisp still calls him Twink as a nickname, though.
** The Color Kids have been aged up and given a few species changes into the interplanetary Color Guard. Red Butler is now codenamed Red Flare (his real name is unknown), while Patty is called such because her real name is hard to pronounce in human language.

*** Muttski – Sonic's pet dog from the WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM pilot and pre-reboot comic issues, because the mobian Ben "Mutt" Muttski post-reboot.

* AdaptationNameChange/UltimateMarvel

* A Retraux issue of ComicBook/WonderWoman set on Earth-Two had her battle a Golden Age version of the modern CorruptCorporateExecutive Veronica Cale, given the MeaningfulName of Veronica Callow.
* ComicBook/DCRebirth:
** ComicBook/TheAtom: Ryan Choi's birth name is revealed to be Lun in this continuity with Ryan as his naturalized name.
** When Silkie was transplated over to the comics in the ComicBook/DCYou ComicBook/Starfire series, the spelling was changed to "Syl'Khee" to reflect his AdaptationSpeciesChange into an alien creature.
** In ComicBook/TheTerrifics Tinya Wazzo/Phantom Girl's modern day ancestor is named Linnya Wazzo and uses the Phantom Girl code name while in previous iterations she was named Enya Wazzo and went by Phase.
** In ComicBook/GothamAcademy, Hardwick of the Terrible Trio is now known as the Raven rather than the Vulture, presumably to avoid confusion with the Spider-Man villain of the same name.
** ComicBook/WonderWomanRebirth:
*** When bringing the Star Riders character Star Lily into the mainstream comics her superhero name was given a tweak to Star Blossom.
*** The ComicBook/WonderWoman villain Doctor Cyber was named Cylvia Cyber in the previous continuties. In ComicBook/WonderWomanRebirth, she's renamed Adrianna Anderson as she was created using a digital map of Anderson's mind created when Anderson was killed in a lab accident.
* ComicBook/TheNew52:
** Philip Wayne, Thomas Wayne's brother who helped raise Bruce in pre-Crisis continuity, was reintroduced in ComicBook/New52 continuity as Martha's brother Philip Kane.
** In the ComicBook/New52 relaunch of Franchise/TheFlash, Weather Wizard and his brother are now called Marco and Claudio instead of Mark and Clyde. The Folding man is also called Xolani instead of Edwin Gauss.
** In the ComicBook/New52 Tim Drake's backstory was jettisoned and his name was said to be an alias. The name change was not used by all writers and didn't stick, and in ComicBook/DCRebirth his name and history were restored.
** Comicbook/Aquaman's evil MirrorUniverse counterpart from Earth-3 is now called Sea King rather than Barracuda.
** In ComicBook/WonderWoman2011 all of the gods from classical mythology are given new common names/titles with some of their traditional names never making an appearance; Apollo gets called Sun, Artemis is called Moon, Ares is called War, Dionysus is called Dio, Hermes is called Messenger and Hades is called Hell.
* ComicBook/PostCrisis:
** In Creator/DCComics' ComicBook/Shazam stories set in the original Fawcett continuity (Earth-S), Billy and Mary's parents were named as Merrill and Jocelyn Batson. In the post-Crisis Power of Shazam stories they're Clarence Charles "CC" and Marilyn Batson -- CC named as a ShoutOut to Shazam creator CC Beck, and Marilyn possibly as a composite of the two pre-Crisis names.
** When the Earth-Two ComicBook/JSA villain Joe Mimic shows up in the New Earth continuity in ComicBook/JSAClassified he's renamed Johnny Mimic, and given the personal name Jonathan Waddill.
** ComicBook/Artemis's introduction, appearance, motivation and character arc marks her as an updated version of Orana from UsefulNotes/OfComicBooks Earth-One Wonder Woman.
** As ComicBook/WonderWoman1987s version of Giganta is a composite character of the original and her creator Dr. Zool her new name is Doris Zeul.
* ComicBook/EarthOne:
** While General Zod is still named Zod in ComicBook/SupermanEarthOne, there's it's his first name instead of his last (it's "Dru-Zod" elsewhere) and his last name is [[spoiler: "El", as he's Superman's uncle here.]]
** ComicBook/TeenTitansEarthOne:
*** Tara Markov’s father’s name was given as Viktor Markov pre-crisis in ComicBook/BatmanAndTheOutsiders, here his name is Will Markov.
*** Rita Farr is now Rita Markov due to being Tara Markov’s mother in this continuity.
** ComicBook/WonderWomanEarthOne:
*** Etta Candy is renamed "Elizabeth".
*** Dr. Psycho's real name is "Leon Zeiko", not "Edger Cizko".
** Martha Wayne in Comicbook/BatmanEarthOne has the maiden name "Arkham" rather than "Kane".
* ComicBook/Earth2:
** Being a CompositeCharacter, Fury's real name is Donna instead of Hippolyta "Lyta" Trevor.
** Wing's real name is James Wing instead of Wing How.
* In pre-crisis Creator/DCComics continuity the pastiche of ComicBook/TheAvengers was called The Champions of Angor, in post-crisis continuity they were retconned to be called The Justifiers. In post-ComicBook/InfiniteCrisis[=/=]pre-ComicBook/New52 continuity they were re-imagined as the Meta-Milita of Earth-8. Then in post-New 52 continuity they were re-imagined again in ComicBook/TheMultiversity as The Retaliators of Earth-8. This has also applied to some of their individual members.
** An Expy of ComicBook/Hawkeye called The Bowman pre-New 52, became Deadeye in The Multiversity.
** An Expy of ComicBook/IronMan called Tin Man pre-New 52, became Machinehead in The Multiversity.
** An Expy of ComicBook/TheWasp called T.A. pre-New 52, became Kite in The Multiversity.
** An Expy of Comicbook/TheMightyThor called Wundjina pre-New 52 became Wundajin or Thunderer in The Multiversity.
** An Expy of Comicbook/CaptainAmerica called Americommando pre-New 52 became American Crusader or Crusader in The Multiversity.
** The last two are also a sort of InUniverse example. In ComicBook/TheMultiversity, the heroes of Earth-8, whose adventures are published throughout TheMultiverse as Major Comics, also have their own UltimateUniverse comics published entitled Essential Comics, whose characters are also revealed to be their actual alternate universe counterparts residing on Earth-7. The ComicBook/CaptainAmerica and Thor expies of Major Comics are American Crusader and Wundajin, but their Essential Major Comics versions are called Crusader and Thunderer.
* The [=SW6=]/post-Zero Hour ComicBook/LegionOfSuperheroes did this with several members:
** Lightning Lad became Live Wire.
** Lightning Lass became Spark (the [=SW6=] Light Lass became Gossamer).
** [=SW6=] Sun Boy became Inferno (the post-Zero Hour Dirk Morgna didn't have a superhero identity).
** [=SW6 =]Element Lad became Alchemist (the post-Zero Hour version went back to Element Lad).
** Colossal Lad became Leviathan.
** Chameleon Boy became Chameleon.
** Shadow Lass became Umbra.
** Ferro Lad became Ferro.
** Triplicate Girl became Triad.
** Phantom Girl became Apparition.
** Dream Girl became Dreamer.
** Mon-El became M'Onel (the [=SW6=] version used his 20th century identity of ComicBook/Valor).
** Princess Projectra in multiple ways. Originally she didn't have a codename (although she briefly used Sensor Girl); she really was a princess named Projectra ("Jeckie" for short). Post Crisis she was Sensor, aka Princess Jeka Wynzzor. Oh, and she was a giant snake. Threeboot she was Princess Wilimena Morgana Daergina Annaxandra Projectra Velorya Vauxhall. And retroboot she went back to Projectra as her real name, but Sensor Girl as her codename.
* Creator/DCInk:
** In Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass, the ComicBook/PoisonIvy analogue is named Ivy Du-Barry (a play on "dewberry") rather than Pamela Isley.
** ComicBook/WonderWomanTempestTossed: Etta Candy is renamed Henke Cukierek, a Polish name whose parts translate to roughly the same meaning as her traditional name.
** In the Elseworlds tale ComicBook/WonderWomanWarbringer Philippus is renamed Tekmassa, or Tek for short. While she is in appearance, title, and relationship to Hippolyta unchanged she is more antagonistic towards Diana rather than acting like her second mother/other parent like she does in the regular continuity.
* In Toys/AmeComiGirls, Jade's real name is Jade Yifei instead of Jennifer-Lynn Hayden.
* In ComicBook/Batman66, the Clock King is named Morris Tetch rather than William Tockman or Temple Fugate. This is because in this continuity, he's the brother of Jervis Tetch, the Mad Hatter.
* In the Batman: Thrillkiller Elseworlds comic, Comicbook/HarleyQuinn's real name is Hayley Fitzpatrick rather than Harleen Quinzel.
* All over the place in ComicBook/DCComicsBombshells:
** ComicBook/Supergirl and ComicBook/Stargirl now hail from Russia, with their real names changed from Kara Zor-El/Linda Lee Danvers and Courtney Whitmore to Kara Starikov and Kortni Duginovna. (And Courtney's stepfather Patrick Dugan is now Ipati Dugin, while her mother's name is Varvara Dugina rather than Barbara Whitmore. Her biological father has gone from Sam Kurtis to Samuel Whitmore, presumably indicating that Vavara's maiden name isn't even a Russian version of Whitmore.)
** The American Selina Kyle is now the Italian Selina Digatti."Gatti" is Italian for "Cats."
** Brother Night is now German, with his name going from Eldon Peck to Eldon Natcht.
** ComicBook/LoisLane and her little sister Lucy are now half-Cuban, with their names changed to Eloisa and Lucia.
** Mary Batson[=/=]ComicBook/MaryMarvel is now a young Jewish girl named Miriam "Miri" Bätzel, with her codename changed to Miri Marvel.
* ComicBook/SupermanAndBatmanGenerations II: Faora of the Phantom Zone villains is renamed Zaora, the name given to a similar version of the character from the Pocket Universe in ComicBook/TheSupergirlSaga.
* In ComicBook/WonderWomanAndTheStarRiders Dolphin's name is given a slight tweak to Dolphine.
* ComicBook/2016:
** Philippus is given a name change to Alcippe, but later issues reveal her original name was Philippus even in this Elseworld tale and Alcippe is her chosen name as an Amazon and Champion.
** The Heyday triplets have been reduced to twins and their original names of Millie and Tillie are given a spelling tweak to Milly and Tilly.
* In pre-Crisis ComicBook/Batman comics, Jim Gordon's son was named Tony. ComicBook/BatmanYearOne introduced James Gordon Jr., who later writers would take in a very different direction from Tony.
* ComicBook/LegionOfSuperHeroes2020:
** Mon-El has Mon-El as his real name, rather than Lar Gand.
** White Witch's real name is Xola Aq rather than Mysa Nal.
* Comicbook/CrimeSyndicate2021
** Traditionally, the Crime Syndicate's Comicbook/GreenLantern analogue was called Power Ring. Here, the post-Death Metal version of the character is instead called Emerald Knight. Additionally, the original Power Ring's real name was Joseph Harrolds, while Emerald Knight's predecessor (as the current holder of the identity is Earth-3's John Stewart) was called Harold Jordan.
** The heroic LegionOfDoom analogue is called the Legion of Justice instead of Justice Underground.

* In the Franchise/MarvelUniverse, ComicBook/ShangChi's father is the literary villain Literature/FuManchu. However, Marvel eventually lost the licensing rights to Fu Manchu, which has resulted in the character going by other names whenever he has appeared in recent years. He voluntarily changed his name to Han in an issue of ComicBook/BlackPanther (stating that IHaveManyNames he has always had many names and thus feels no real attachment to any of them), and was later given the name Zheng Zu in ComicBook/SecretAvengers.
* Franchise/SpiderMan:
** ComicBook/SpiderGwen has been renamed Ghost Spider for reasons of practicality. Obviously, no one calls her Spider-Gwen in-universe, and as the name Spider-Woman has been used by several characters, and was also in use for Earth 616's Jessica Drew, having her interact with characters using the same name could get confusing. The Ghost Spider name was first used for the WesternAnimation/MarvelRisingSecretWarriors animated series, (See Western Animation), but was made RetCanon for the comic universe.
** ComicBook/SpiderManLifeStory:
*** spoiler:Peter's daughter, Claire Parker is a dead ringer for Mayday ComicBook/SpiderGirl Parker in looks -- a tomboy brunette and personality (being sassy and snarking at her dad). She also has a brother named Benjy and considers Ben Reilly her uncle.
*** Harry Osborn's supervillain alias is the Black Goblin rather than the Green Goblin.
** In ComicBook/SpiderManNoir, the ComicBook/GreenGoblin is just called the Goblin.
** In Comicbook/MarvelAdventures Spider-Man, Comicbook/EmmaFrost's supervillain name is "The Silencer" instead of "The White Queen" (as she's just a teenager and is not associated with the Hellfire Club in this continuity).
* Franchise/XMen:
** In ComicBook/Powerless, ComicBook/Magneto is an American senator named Eric Magnus instead of a Polish Holocaust survivor named Erik Lensherr (with the birth name Max Eisenhardt).
** The ComicBook/AgeOfApocalypse version of ComicBook/X 23 has the name Kirika rather than Laura, since she is half-Japanese and Wolverine's daughter (and not his OppositeSexClone) in this continuity.
* In the Marvel Max Cage series, Hammerhead is renamed Sonny "The Hammer" Caputo.
* Two Canon Immigrants from the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse underwent this:
** The version of Whiplash from Film/IronMan2, a CompositeCharacter of Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo, was named Ivan Vanko. When Marvel introduced a version of him to tie into the film, his first name was changed to "Anton", the same as the original Crimson Dynamo--despite being of no relation to the man.
** Marvel introduced a version of the Hope Pym seen in the Film/AntMan1 movie, though her name was changed from English to the Russian word for "hope", Nadia, in part because she's the long-lost daughter of Hank Pym and his first wife, Maria Trovaya, as opposed to the film and original ComicBook/MarvelComics2 versions, who were mothered by Janet van Dyne.
* Hulk's father originally debuted in the TV series Series/TheIncredibleHulk1977, then named DW Banner (it was never mentioned what "DW" stands for). When he debuted in comics, his name was changed to Brian. His morality was also changed.
* ComicBook/Marvel1602 played with this, as most name changes consisted of slightly changing a character's name to a variant that would have been more probable to exist in the 17th century. Jean Grey is called "John Grey" because she's pretending to be a man, and Peter Parquah is actually named Peter Parker and assumed the name Parquah to hide his Scottish ancestry from the English. The most notable case of the trope being played straight is with the continuity's equivalents of Dr. Doom and Dr. Octopus, who curiously swap first names and are addressed as Otto Von Doom and Victor Octavius.
* At the end of ComicBook/HeroesReborn, ComicBook/CaptainAmerica meets Rikki Barnes's parents, her father being a man named Richard Barnes and implied to be the actual HR version of ComicBook/BuckyBarnes, whose first name in 616 was James.
* ComicBook/UltimateMarvel has its own page.

* Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog:
** ComicBook/ArchieComicsSonicTheHedgehog:
*** Dr. Robotnik. Originally, his first name was Ivo, like in the games. Then it was retconned into Julian after WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM introduced that name. Later, writers explained this inconsistency as his birth name being "Julian Kintobor of the House of Ivo", which he later changed to Ivo Robotnik upon taking over Mobotropolis. The 2013 reboot simplified things, establishing that his name was always Ivo Robotnik.
*** Due to a mix-up on the comic staff's part, Metal Sonic was initially called Mecha Sonic, the name of a separate (but similar) game character. To add to the confusion, Sonic's roboticized form was called Mecha Sonic as well.
*** Naugus from WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM became Ixis Naugus pre-reboot, and Walter Naugus post-reboot.
*** In WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM, Robotnik's nephew Snively had OnlyOneName and it was never specified whether it was his actual name or a nickname. The comic chose to make it an alias, with his birthname being Colin Kintobor Jr. Following the reboot, he was no-longer Eggman's nephew and was instead named Julian Snively.
*** When Eggman Nega made a cameo via silhouette, he was referred to as Dr Nega.
*** King Acorn's name went from Maximillian pre-reboot, to Nigel post-reboot.

*** Witchcart became Wendy Naugus, the sister of Walter Naugus.
** ComicBook/SonicTheComic:
*** The comic changed Metal Sonic's name to Metallix, as the writer of the story that introduced him felt that "'Metal Sonic' wouldn't do". It still referenced his more common name, though, as he's referred to as "Metallix the Metal Sonic" several times.
*** Later issues revealed that this series' version of Porker Lewis was originally called Oscar the Pig.

* : Several Trope examples, as Ing the Ingrate is introduced as Ing the Merciless.
