Trivia / SuperMarioLogan

Go To

  • Acting for Two:
    • Bowser and Chef Pee Pee are both voiced by Lovell.
    • A rare occurrence of two characters voiced by Logan talking happens in one episode of the Luigi's Mansion arc.
      • Whenever Mario and Junior meet, this is bound to happen. A fact worth knowing when you consider that both of them rarely interact.
  • Banned Episode:
    • "Jeffy's Tantrum!" was deleted from the main channel due to it containing a scene where Jeffy attempts to hang himself. While this is nothing out of the ordinary for SML humor, it became rather controversial after a British mother claimed that her child had attempted to imitate this scene with a makeshift noose. This is considered to be a major reason for Logan's troubles with YouTube, and the only way to view the video now is by reuploads and reactions.
    • Every video with the Nintendo plushies thanks to the C&D, all of which have since been reuploaded.
  • Corpsing: So much so that there are dedicated compilations of this.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • Logan has stated at times that he regrets adding Jeffy to the cast, even stating in a chat with Dabhdude that he would like to go back in time in order to make sure he never creates Jeffy. Even worse, Logan knows he can't retire or kill him off due to the fact a large portion of his subscribers only watch SML for Jeffy, and would unsubscribe, harass, and/or even send death threats if Jeffy was removed, and can't use older characters like Woody or Mama Luigi due to the videos starring them having a large dislike-to-like ratio simply because Jeffy never appeared, meaning Logan is essentially forced to make Jeffy videos, even if it means recycling plots.
    • "Jeffy's Bad Word!" was hated so much that it got this, to the point where Logan left a comment asking fans if he should delete the video.
    • After the massive backlash the human puppets received, Logan came to regret using them, shifted back to using the plushies, and eventually put the puppet videos into their own separate continuity. However, the cease-and-desist letter from Nintendo ultimately forced Logan to use them full-time.
    • Logan apologized for the amount of filler in "The Pink Couch!", mostly during the dye scene. You can see his apology in a comment on the same video.
    • Chris really hates his first Cody voice, which sounded a lot like Mr. Crocker.
  • Creator Breakdown: Logan after the late 2019 drama. In December 2019, rumors began circulating that Logan and Chilly had broken up (again) because Logan had cheated on her with Elaina while Chilly was in Tokyo with Tito. However, it was eventually revealed that Chilly cheated on Logan. The following months had revelation after revelation come out (namely the fact that Chilly had stopped loving Logan several years prior and had become a Gold Digger), all of which were taken with a grain of salt due to most of the cast being notoriously unreliable in terms of transparency. The drama was referenced in multiple SML videos (one being a Take That! at Chilly's second boyfriend; a character known as "Roy Gethard", a Jerkass who steals people's girlfriends just because, who later became a Parody Sue). The whole situation took a toll on the cast and the fanbase as a whole, making it all the more exhausting and confusing when Logan and Chilly seemingly made up like nothing happened in a later Chilly video, leading some to question if they ever even broke up in the first place, or faked the entire drama for views. By that point, practically everyone was ready to move on.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: Since there are at least four actors portraying most of the characters, this is bound to happen.
    • Logan as Peach in earlier episodes, Daisy, Minnie Mouse and Stacy from "Chef Pee Pee's Family".
    • Lance as Bowser's mom Margaret and Joseph's mom.
    • Chris as Cody's mom Judy, Princess Zelda and Chef Pee Pee's unnamed sister from "Chef Pee Pee's Family".
    • Chilly as Jackie Twu in "The Fly Problem!".
  • Dawson Casting: All the young characters are voiced by the regular cast members of the show (for example, Junior is a teenager and is voiced by Logan, who is already in his late 20's).
  • Development Hell: "The SuperMarioLogan Movie" is infamous for this.
    • The film was first announced in late 2016 with a release date of April 2017. This didn't become reality beyond a heavily-panned April Fool's video purporting to be the movie, but actually being an hour-long video involving Jeffy watching paint dry. After that, numerous delays were made, usually pushing it to the next month after failing to hit the new date, all of which passed without the release of the movie. Logan at first confirmed it was taking longer to film, and the crew continued trying to update on progress.
    • By the end of July, Logan claimed that the movie was 75 percent completed and would be released by the end August. However, it was around this time that Lovell would take a month long absence from the channel for personal reasons. Since he played such a vital role in the channel voicing characters like Bowser and Chef Pee Pee, Logan's options were to either delay it to September or cut several scenes with his characters. He ultimately chose the former. However, even after Lovell came back, the September release still did not happen.
    • Logan would continue to make new release dates for the film, none of which ever became a reality. By mid-2018, updates on the movie became less and less frequent, with the crew now rarely making reference to it. Rumours began to spread among fans that the film was shelved due to issues with monetization, or if the schedule of making two videos a week was simply making production take so long. Finally, in July 2019, Logan confirmed that the movie was still in production and would be uploaded to SuperBowserLogan when it was completed.
    • In 2020, during the drama with Chilly, she claimed the movie had been quietly cancelled a year prior, but Logan avoided announcing this because he was "too scared" of potential backlash and was hoping the fans would just forget about it. Later in an interview with YouTuber CDusk, she claimed that only a few minutes of the movie was actually filmed. Logan denied both of these claims. In his interview, Logan said that about half of the footage was fully filmed, and that he still wants to make the movie. Lance claimed that they would make an entire update video talking the movie, which never happened.
    • After the C&D in February 2021, SML was barred from ever using the Mario characters again. This means that, if the film ever were to release, it is going to have to be entirely reshot with the new puppets. The latest release date given was Thanksgiving 2022, over a year and a half after said announcement was made. But considering Logan's track record, no one held their breath.
    • After almost 6 years, the movie finally released on the newest channel on August 21, 2022; albeit heavily retooled into Jeffy's 18th Birthday special with multiple changes to the plot.
  • Distanced from Current Events: The original ending for "Bowser Junior's 10th Birthday!" had Junior burning the case of Nickelodeon Kart Racers, but it was scrapped following the death of SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg.
  • Executive Meddling:
    • It is widely believed among fans that the only reason Logan still used the human puppets for months despite the overwhelmingly negative reception they received is because the company that made them had him sign a contract promising to use them a certain number of times before certain dates.
    • During the drama and breakup between Logan and Chilly in 2019, Chilly's meddling was brought to light by Lovell:
      • She was the one who pushed Logan to make more Jeffy videos, despite his divisive reputation, making her in part responsible for the Seasonal Rot of SML (along with younger fans pushing for more and more Jeffy videos and disliking videos starring older characters such as Woody and Mama Luigi, simply because they weren't Jeffy) and the driving force behind Jeffy becoming a Breakout Character. Once Chilly left, the quality of videos (depending on who you ask, at least) noticeably went up, confirming what many SML Wiki users came to believe: that Chilly was a toxic influence on the channel, and was the reason it became a black comedy sadist show, resulting in its infamous Too Bleak, Stopped Caring levels.
      • Chilly hated Elaina and Lance and thus, they were both edited out of nearly every Chilly vlog they appeared in. Elaina had it worse as she wasn't allowed to film with Logan if Chilly was present, had cameras placed all over the house to watch them whenever Chilly wasn't there, and was eventually kicked out of the house by Chilly, explaining Rosalina's long absences. Chilly even went as far as to lie that Elaina was attending college out-of-state. It is believed Chilly saw Elaina as a rival for Logan's affections (and therefore, his money), and wanted her out of the picture. Once Chilly left, the former was allowed to come back as Rosalina and appear in the vlogs while the latter took over filming and uploading the vlogs on his channel.
  • Humble Beginnings: Initially, "Super Mario Milk" was just another low quality upload about a couple of kids messing around. This is the first video of what would go on to become YouTube's most popular plush channel with millions of subscribers.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes:
    • After a mother came down hard on Logan for supposedly inspiring her son to imitate Jeffy's attempted suicide with a belt, the offending video, "Jeffy's Tantrum!", has been deleted, and can now only be seen via reuploads.
    • The original version of "Jeffy Gets a Job!", which had to be taken down when Jimmy John's threatened to take Logan to court for copyright infringement. Logan stated the original version was "free game" for reuploads.
    • With the C&D, every video with the Nintendo plushies falls under this category.
  • Lying Creator: Infamously so:
    • Before it was shut down, Logan's Patreon made a point of promising backers various things at each tier. However, it quickly became apparent that backers were not getting their money's worth. The promised "Early Access" to videos was a farce, as the videos were never uploaded to Patreon more than 15 minutes before being public in YouTube. Other tiers, such as the name in the description and shout-outs in videos, were rarely ever given, even though most of them would not have taken very long to do. When an outcry from backers began, Logan made numerous excuses, such as explaining the lack of shout-outs by saying the actors were "too tired" to make them after each recording. This did little to change the minds of backers, with some accusing Logan of running a scam. Ultimately, the Patreon only lasted 4 months before shutting down.
    • On August 24th, 2018, SuperMarioLogan 2, a backup for the main channel, was seemingly hacked. The channel name was changed to "REJN", all content from the channel was deleted, and the description was changed to "Taking over the world". Logan confirmed it was hacked and told fans to unsubscribe from the channel. However, 5 days later, JJ revealed that Logan deleted the videos himself and gave the channel back to JJ, who was that channel's original owner, after videos were still getting demonetized despite Logan taking steps to prevent it. JJ's channel was changed again not long after to reflect that it was his.
    • In July of 2018, Logan made a deal saying he would burn the Jeffy puppet if the main SML channel got its ads back. When the channel did get it back for awhile, Logan ultimately reneged on it, justifying it through the specifics of the dealnote , and making fun of the fans who thought they would really burn the puppet. The backlash he got from it was so bad, that he made an entire video on Chilly's channel in the hopes of putting out the flames.
    • Sometime in late June 2021, Logan announced that, in coordination with Nintendo's C&D letter, he would be deleting all of his channels that had Nintendo references, most famously all 3 of his mainline channels. Come their supposed deletion date, June 30th, no channels were deleted. This warranted an outcry from people who thought Logan was being dishonest, scaring his viewers and tugging at their heartstrings in a ploy to get people to subscribe to the new SML channel. Not helping was this wasn't the first time either, as he pulled the same stunt a month ago, even deleting posts of his "reminders" after the original deletion date (June 1st) passed. It would take until July 8th for the original channel to be deleted, with SLL and SBL following in the months to come.
  • Meaningful Release Date:
    • "Chef Pee Pee's Birthday Surprise!" was released exactly a day after the 5th anniversary of the episode "Koopa's New Job", which was when Chef Pee Pee first appeared in the series.
    • "The Ring", where Mario attempts to propose to Rosalina, was released exactly a year after "Mario's New Girlfriend!", in which Mario and Rosalina meet for the first time and start dating. Chef Pee Pee even lampshades this in the video itself.
    • "Jeffy's Parents!" was released a day before the first anniversary of "Mario The Babysitter!", Jeffy's first appearance. The video also ends with Mario officially adopting Jeffy as his son.
  • Missing Episode:
    • The aforementioned "Jeffy's Tanturm", along with "The Couch" and "Jeffy's Kids" were all deleted by Logan.
    • "Jeffy's Clone" and "Bowser's Mistake" used to be these, but were eventually reuploaded due to fan demand.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • Brooklyn T. Guy was originally voiced by Lance in his first appearance, the SML Short "Stuck in a Tree", but from "Bowser Junior's Summer School 5" onward he is voiced by Chris.
    • Jackie Chu's son, Jackie Twu, was voiced by Chilly in his first appearance, but in following appearances he is voiced by Chris.
    • King StrongBottom, Chef Pee Pee's father, was originally voiced by Chris in his first appearance, but was voiced by Lance in later appearances.
    • Parodied and acknowledged in "The Bake Sale", where Cody and Does Bad Things Guy switch between Lance and Chris several times during the episode, much to Junior's annoyance.
    • Brooklyn T. Guy's daughter Penelope was originally voiced by Chris's step-cousin Rachel, but for unknown reasons she was replaced with Elaina in later videos.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot:
    • Logan lost his Bowser plush before he filmed the episode "Bowser Junior's Easter Wish!". Bowser's absence is explained by him leaving to Canada out of shame after he lost his title as the "Easter Egg Hunting Champion" to Junior in the previous Easter special.
    • Both "Bowser's House Fire!" and "Mario's Family Moves Out!" were written due to Logan moving out from his family house to his own place, therefore he needed to explain the change of scenery. The same can be said for "The Koopalings! Part 2", in which the titular characters end up wrecking the apartment where the main characters have been living (culminating in Wendy taking a chainsaw to the couch), and Goodman kicks Bowser and Mario out, due to Logan moving from the apartment to his new house.
    • Rosalina's appearances were sporadic following "Jeffy Has Kids!" because Elaina Keyes, who portrayed her, was supposedly away at college, and could only return during breaks. This was later revealed to be a lie, as Chilly forbade Elaina from entering the house because the former hated her. After Logan and Chilly broke up, Elaina and her characters (chiefly Rosalina and Karen) returned full-time.
    • Lovell was hospitalized for kidney failure in November 2018, so for a few episodes, characters played by him List  were absent.
    • During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chris refused to go to Logan's house out of a paranoia of catching the virus. As a result, Cody, Brooklyn T. Guy, and Judy only appeared via FaceTime, his other characters (mainly Hansel and Bully Bill) were voiced by Lance and Lovell and several of his characters were replaced by similar characters, such as Harry for Cody, and Officers Top and Bottom for situations where Brooklyn T. Guy would be a cop.
  • Referenced by...:
    • Supermarioglitchy4's Super Mario 64 Bloopers: In "Super Happy Magical Fun Fun Island", Toad sings "Party in the Tub" on the plane, and in "Stupid Mario Sunshine", SML Bowser Jr.'s Leitmotif, "Get Outside", plays when his Shadow Mario disguise breaks.
    • Smosh: Jeffy appears in "Every Nick Show Ever", a parody of iCarly and Victorious, as "Mr. Onions", the puppet owned by the Captain Ersatz of Robbie Shapiro. His helmet is removed, and his shirt is flipped inside out to hide his name.
    • Jeffy was featured in a few jokes on Yo Mama, featuring one joke each for Stupid, Ugly, and Fat.
  • Refitted for Sequel: After both Development Hell and getting Screwed by the Lawyers led to "The SuperMarioLogan Movie" getting canned, the overall plot of the movie with Mario getting kidnapped by Nancy in order to get Jeffy's money was eventually reworked into "Jeffy's 18th Birthday!".
  • Screwed by the Lawyers:
    • When he went on vacation in 2016, Logan filmed a Titanic video with his The Cat in the Hat plush. He was unable to upload it to YouTube due to copyright issues with My Heart Will Go On, but it is viewable on his Facebook account.
    • "Jeffy Gets a Job!" was taken down after Jimmy John's threatened legal action against Logan for using their the likeness and name of the company without permission (most of the video took place at a Jimmy John's); Logan theorized that a hater ratted him out to Jimmy John's corporate. On a lighter note, Logan said he would reupload the video on his new channel, SuperMarioLogan2, but with all Jimmy John's references censored and blurred, and he's even invoked Keep Circulating the Tapes in regards to the uncensored version, calling it fair game.
    • In February 2021, Logan received a cease-and-desist letter from Nintendo, demanding that he stop using Nintendo characters in family-unfriendly situations. On February 13, 2021, after days of speculation by the fanbase over whether the letter was genuine or a fake sent by a disgruntled fan or Chilly, Logan confirmed that the letter did indeed come from Nintendo, who were fed-up with Logan putting their characters in family-unfriendly situations, going as far as to accuse Logan of using them to promote hate speech. Because of this, the Nintendo plushies could no longer be legally used and Logan was forced to wipe all traces of Nintendo and their characters from the SML brand, leaving only the older videos. This was taken further in March 2021, when a leaked chat between a fan and Logan on Instagram had him reveal that Nintendo also wanted all of Logan's channels taken down due to the older videos and their custom URLs, which can't be changed once they're set, still having Mario references in them. Following this, Logan moved activity once again and began remaking some of the older videos on a 4th SML channel. Furthermore, because the human puppets still look suspiciously like the characters whose plushies they replaced, Logan had to rename them all. These changes would affect some the non-Nintendo characters like the Blue M&Ms Officer, likely so Logan could prevent any other company like Mars Incorporated. While others like Shrek and Woody remain as they are, they've been hit with a copious amount of Demoted to Extra.
  • Screwed by the Network: SuperMarioLogan as a whole has had a turbulent history of having its monetization revoked and returned. The main channel and the channel's backup, SuperLuigiLogan, were eventually stripped of their monetization for good in 2019 due to YouTube's policy concerning "family-entertainment characters", forcing Logan to move to SuperBowserLogan.
  • Similarly Named Works: The acronym "SML" is not to be confused with an official one, being Super Mario Land.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • "Mario The Babysitter!" was originally going to be Jeffy's only appearance.
    • "The Tarantula!" was originally going to have a deleted scene where Junior got bit by his pet tarantula, according to a picture on Logan's Facebook, but it was cut off from the final video.
    • During some livestreams with SML Reviewer, Word of God revealed some information regarding his videos.
      • Logan stated that the original ending of "Jeffy's Favorite Song!" would've revealed that the scene where Mario gets killed by a demonic bunny was All Just a Dream and by the end of the episode Mario would've grown to love the Bunny Do song, only for Rosalina and Jeffy to start hating it.
      • Originally "Jeffy Goes To The Zoo!" was going to be a Bowser Junior video, with Junior being the cause of Harambe's death.
      • Instead of the "The Koopalings! Part 2" being used as the reason the characters moved out, there was going to be a video called "The Comet!", where a comet would hit the apartment, forcing Mario, Bowser and the others to move out. Because he had to move out from his apartment at a certain date, he was unable to film "The Comet!".
      • In "Happy Halloween!" Junior was originally going to call 911, so they could arrest the clowns, and since Mario was disguised as the Joker, it would've ended with the police confusing Mario for one of the evil clowns and arresting him as result. This was cut to avoid fan backlash, especially considering the controversy of "Jeffy's Bad Word!", and later "Locked Out".
      • In "Locked Out", Mario was originally going to break one of the windows in order to get back into the house.
    • Instead of Jacques Pierre François, Jeffy's father was originally going to be Hansel the homeless man. This idea was changed due to the fans not really liking Hansel.
    • Lincoln was initially going to be alive and well in "The Past Machine!" and was set to be voiced by Anthony. The video itself was also supposed to end in a time loop, with Junior causing the same mistakes over and over again.
    • According to Lovell in his reaction video to "Jeffy the Rapper!", a different song for Jeffy was made, which was cut in favor of the "Why?" hit new single.
    • According to Logan, at one point he considered having "SuperMarioLogan The Movie" deal with the secret door from "The New House!", before he opted to make them into separate videos.
    • Prior to the release of the "The Secret Door!", it was stated that the video would feature both Junior and Jeffy opening the door. In the final video, only Jeffy opens the door and Junior doesn’t appear in the video at all.
      • A later BTS vlog revealed that the original plot, rather than involving mutilated bodies and a serial killer, would have involved Mama Luigi, presumably pissed at being forgotten all these years. This was nixed when getting Zeke out to Florida proved too difficult, though he eventually did make the trip east and reprised the role of Mama Luigi in a remake of "Toad's Mistake!".
    • According to Chilly's BTS vlog for "2 Tickets", a scene featuring Tyrone was originally going to be included in the episode, but they were unable to find the puppet, so the scene was cut.
    • "Jeffy's Brain!" was originally considered to be a Junior video according to Lovell in his reaction to the aforementioned video, with Junior, Chef Pee Pee, Cody and Shrek sneezing their brains out and getting their brains switched as a result.
    • At one point, the secret room was originally intended to be either Bowser's or Chef Pee Pee's room, as shown on Chilly's vlog channel.
    • After "Jeffy Has Kids!" was released, Logan (and later on Lance in a reaction video) revealed that there was a scene where Jeffy actually had sex with the Cheerio box (which even had a pair of panties on), leading to the birth of his children. Logan decided to cut this scene due to its graphic content and how YouTube would quickly age-restrict/demonetize the video. He also claimed that he couldn't find the video clip for it.
    • According to Lance's Meet the Cast video, Jeffy's helmet was originally supposed to be red, but the puppet company in charge of making Jeffy only made blue helmets, resulting in Jeffy's blue helmet. Also, his name was originally going to be "Doofy," but since Doofy the Dragon was already a character, he was renamed to Jeffy.
    • "The Retard Robbery!" was a scrapped video that Logan revealed in a Dabhdude livestream. It was intended to re-introduce Tony to the main cast. It would have been about Black Yoshi and Tony robbing a gas station so the former can afford the new Call of Duty game. While scrapped, the video was eventually morphed into "Black Yoshi’s Money Problem!", which does feature a gas station being robbed.
    • "Jeffy's 18th Birthday!" was originally supposed to be "The SuperMarioLogan Movie", before the latter's eventual cancellation following a combination of Development Hell and getting Screwed by the Lawyers. While the finished video retains the general plot of the movie, the original video would've featured appearances of every single SML character introduced up to that point and would've reintroduced Mama Luigi as part of the main cast.
    • Ya Boy Duggie (Black Yoshi's puppet counterpart) was originally intended to appear as a human puppet, note  but Logan decided to keep him as a dinosaur given that while Yoshis are Nintendo IPs, they don't own the concept of dinosaurs.
    • An alternate ending for the episode "The RIGGED Game!" was filmed in the event the Buccaneers had won the game, which can be viewed here.
  • Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things: In early 2018, Logan found out both the SML and SLL channels were getting demonetized to the point where new videos were being instantly confirmed by manual review. In late April and early May of 2018, fans discovered the demonetization spree was being caused by a group of disgruntled fans that were reporting many videos on both channels, all led by a user named SkipDip. SkipDip stated that his motives were to force Logan to admit he had "scammed" people on Patreon and to force him to stop using Jeffy and Junior due to them being the focus of nearly every modern SML video. He claimed that by using those characters and rarely using Shrek, Black Yoshi and other older characters, Logan was "insulting" fans of the older videos and not caring for them, even though Black Yoshi still appeared semi-frequently and Shrek still got a few videos per year. A massive flame war broke out as a result, as some fans actually supported SkipDip's motives. Other independent users also mass-reported videos either to troll Logan or because they were overzealous moral guardians trying to "protect" children. As a result, it would take until August of that year for the demonetization spree to calm down.
  • Write Who You Know:
    • Screwball is named after a clown that visited Logan's birthday party when he was young.
    • Hansel is named after an actual homeless man who came up to Logan one day. Said homeless man also called Logan "Cheeseburger Man," inspiring Mario's nickname.
    • According to Word of God, during a livestream with dabhdude, Junior's original attitude was based on Logan's younger sister Haleigh, albeit a bit toned down compared to her.
    • The idea of Cody's Ken doll comes from Logan always carrying a G.I. Joe figure everywhere he went during his childhood.
  • You Look Familiar: The puppet used for Chef Pee Pee is the same model of puppet used for the puppet version of Stuart Ashen character Chef Excellence.
