- Box Office Bomb: Budget, $20 million. Box office, $13,383,747. This was one of Woody Allen's most highly Acclaimed Flops.
- Playing Against Type: Dianne Wiest took the part of Helen Sinclair specifically for this reason, as she wanted to play something besides the nice, emotionally troubled characters she had been known for.
- Reality Subtext:
- The running theme of the film is that a true artist has their own moral code. This is probably a rebuke by Woody Allen to those who decried his affair and marriage to Soon-Yi Previn.
- Chazz Palminteri is a brilliant writer, and is usually typecast as Italian doofuses.
- Spared by the Cut: Originally, gangster turned playwright Cheech was supposed to live and become a theatrical success without losing his more sinister elements, but he dies in the final version.
- Throw It In!: Cheech's last line, "Don't speak!", was ad-libbed.
