Previews

  • The Predator. While the Yautja have been terrifying before, the official trailer shows that even with their supposed rules, they desperately outmatch humanity.
    • This is perfectly represented by the short moment in the trailer when it grabs an axe from a hunter, flips it around, and buries it into him. All in the span of mere seconds.
    • It's revealed in the trailer killing a grizzly bear with ease. The same bear that was close to killing Naru and tore through a natural dam. It proceeds to lift the carcass above its head in victory, blood dripping onto it to reveal a familiar cloaked visage.
    • This time around, this Yautja has a more unique modification to its helmet, wearing the skull of what appears to be a dead alien. This results in the Predator appearing far more beastly and feral than its predecessors when it roars and hunts.

Film

  • Hell, the mountain lion the Comanche hunting party is tracking is about as scary as the Predator. The most notable moment by far is when, while trash-talking Naru, Paaka is yanked from the tree they're perched in and mauled in a jumpscare that comes out of nowhere. What's worse is we see nothing, but hear the poor hunter's bloodcurdling screams.
  • The Predator is introduced by killing various bits of prey, from snakes to wolves, before making itself known to Naru by fighting the bear attacking her. The fight goes on for about a minute before the Predator gets the jump on the animal and guts it, lifting the carcass above its head and drenching itself in blood.
    • The fight with the wolf is scary in how the Predator defeats it. Rather than go all in, it hangs back and watches the wolf quietly before then making a run at it. The first attack results in the Predator getting injured, but the second results in the wolf staggering for a moment before its insides pretty much spill out. Like Noland said, they adapt, and quickly.
    • Then it tops that in its fight with the bear that was chasing Naru. While the last hunts established the Predator’s skill, this time it displays its sheer brute strength by wrestling the beast, at one point tossing it over like a sack of flour before rushing at it again. The most startling part is the ending. The Predator doesn’t kill the bear with any weapons like it did the wolf; as the bear rushes towards it, the Predator punches the bear hard in the face. That kills it. Then it guts the bear.
    • Imagine what was going through Naru's mind witnessing that. Grizzly bears are the largest predators in North America and the indigenous peoples of that continent, Comanche included, saw them with great dread and awe. Hunting bears was something never done except in heavily-armed parties as large as ten warriors, and was treated with the same preparation and ceremoniality as intertribal warfare. Having firearms made bear hunting a bit easier. And this thing kills one with a punch.
    • Pretty soon after, it makes itself known to the rest of the hunters as they try to capture Naru and take her back to camp. It pretty much tears through them with ease, the most brutal kill being when it catches up to a hunter in the long grass and basically turns him into a cloud of blood.
    • Its face. Sure, the species are infamously ugly motherfuckers, but this particular Predator has a much more fleshy, flattened face that just looks... wrong.
    • Its helmet is the skull of an alien lifeform and is completely blank, giving it the illusion of being a feral beast on par with creatures such as the Skullcrawlers. Hell, it could have even inspired the Berserker Predators in the future. There's also the distinct possibility it could've come from the Predators' other favourite prey...
  • The massacre of the French tracking party. It starts with them having tied up Naru and Taabe as bait. As two trackers keep watch, they barely notice their allies on horses getting cut down without a sound, the only sign that something has gone wrong being the stampede of horses that flee in fear.
    • The Predator shoots a net at one unfortunate tracker. That net slowly compacts and dices the tracker into bits of meat. Thankfully, the camera veers away from the whole thing, but you can still see him bleeding from the face.
  • Many scenes remind the viewer that, even without the alien hunter, 1700s America is still a dangerous time.
    • The field of skinned buffalo. Naru comes upon them during her hunting trip and is horrified to find a whole clearing filled with rotting corpses. At first, you may have the idea that it was the Predator who mowed them down mercilessly, but Naru later learns it was a group of French trackers.
    • Shortly after this, she gets caught in a quicksand-like bog and almost drowns before she's able to use her axe as a grappling hook and pull herself out. It's a clear reminder that the wilderness is just as much of a threat as a group of trappers is.
    • Hell, even the bear. Naru stumbles upon it on her journey, and due to an unfortunate change of wind direction, it's quickly able to sniff her out and hunt her down. If it weren't for the Predator, Naru would likely be dead.
    • Though you may not feel sorry for him anyway, the fact that the first thing the leader of the French hunters wakes up to after Naru knocks him out are rats chewing on the stump of his leg is pretty nightmarish.
  • The end credits mostly recap the events of the film via cave painting, but the very last one shows a whole bunch of Predator ships descending upon Naru's village. Considering the fact that the next time we see Raphael's gun it's in the hands of an elder Predator, things are not looking good for Naru and her village.
