Unlike almost all of the other shlock produced by Goodtimes Entertainment, this one actually seemed like it could have been good. It wasn’t a cheap cash-in of a beloved Disney animation, and thus this felt more genuine. The concept is darker than most Christmas movies, with a boy making a story to help his dying sister find the motivation to hold on. If this were done by anyone other than Goodtimes, it could have been a darkly beautiful Christmas classic, but instead it falls flat in on its face and is easily forgotten.
The animation and quality were not very good, even considering the time (though I did like Landon and Emery-Elizabeth’s designs). The snowman himself both looked and sounded like a stereotypical pedophile, not helped by him staring into Emery-Elizabeth’s bedroom the whole time. On top of that, he’s a complete jerk and never actually does anything aside from exposition. The story makes no sense and the villain is boring, feeling tacked on at the last minute. The villain should have been something that represented Emery’s hopelessness and self-doubt, not some Crypt Keeper Expy. The movie’s message of positive thinking also carried Unfortunate Implications of saying sick people just have to want to get better, plus Emery-Elizabeth’s Soap Opera Disease itself is never specified and feels cheesy, especially considering it gets instantly cured at the end. An utter waste of a good premise.
WesternAnimation The real sad part wasn’t the subject matter, but the wasted potential.
