This short doesn't need to exist. We all know it's made for the sake of money. The short could have been better, had it not... well, gone down this route.
Elsa wants to plan a great birthday party for Anna, to make up for the lack of contact and cold shoulder for the previous years. That's a cute premise and they could've stuck with that, but then had to add Whacky Hijinks to the mix.
The whacky hijinks are pointless, the exaggerated drama of Elsa almost injuring herself while sick is just exaggerated to the point of being silly and not dramatic.
Why couldn't they just make it a short little 'episode' of Elsa wanting to work on her relationship with Anna? Why these hijinks? Frozen already showed that their acting with each other is a bit iffy, even at the end of the movie, so why not show them developing it? They can't just ignore the good decade or so they didn't have any contact and suddenly be hunky-dory fine.
There was no need to add the whole sick thing to this. I know the message may be to not ignore illnesses, since they can be pretty bad, but this was a cold! I've had my share of really bad colds, but never to such an extent! Elsa isn't having a cold, she's suffering from a brain tumor, if that is how she acts when she gets feverish.
Unnecessary, but could have been rectified, if whackiness and comedy was not in the foreground and they had opted for something more subtle and calm.
