WesternAnimation BMO (Spoiler-free)
When I heard that Adventure Time was having four specials on HBO Max, I assumed it would be a sort of epilogue for some of the characters. Which is why it confused me to learn that one of them would be focusing on BMO, a character who more or less had a decent ending. I also assumed that maybe we'd find out how they became the King of Ooo. But sadly, if you're looking for something to bridge the gap between the finale and the distant future we see, this isn't it. However, fans of the character BMO won't be disappointed.
All in all, it's a very charming special with a relatively simplistic plot that actually gives us some interesting tidbits about the lore of the universe(they are a bit too subtle with them, though), though it does raise some minor questions. Oh, and there is an (although not drastic) Animation Bump.

I was really looking forward to this one. And it did not disappoint. Unlike BMO, where the lore revelations were left to the viewer to piece things together, we have full-on flashbacks. Obviously, I won't spoil what they are, but they full of, as they say, "feels". The Glass Kingdom introduced in this episode is very beautifully drawn, and its citizens are entertaining to watch. There is also a very fanservice-y cameo at the very end which, while unexpected, was still a welcome (and sad) sight. I should also note that I was worried how Marcy and Bonnie's relationship would be presented, but it was extraordinarily well done. Marceline has two new songs, both of which are fantastic, though they are the Spiritual Antithesis to one another. My only real gripe was that there was one Unexpected Character who appeared in the flashbacks who, while she was finally given a name, did not have the same voice actress as before. When you watch it, you'll know who I'm talking about. I just felt that her original VA not coming back for a Role Reprise really tainted the portrayal of the character, although her replacement does just fine.
All in all, this felt like a perfect epilogue for one of my favorite cartoon couples, and I look forward to the next two installments.
