A New Beginning definitely starts out very slowly. The entirety of the first season, Spring, is basically nothing but a very slow, prolonged tutorial.
The player doesn't have a whole lot to do during the day, lacks majority of the tools and could sleep days away without somehow messing things up. As you proceed in Spring, though, you do unlock your tools, an animal and gradually fill the days by taking care of farm work or foraging in the areas.
Things don't really pick up until the end of Spring, which is when you unlock Blueprints and that leads to the plot of the game: restoring Echo Village by expanding its market and living spaces for more people to move in.
Everything past that point is great. It's addicting, from Summer on, you have more to do, can do more and overall have a concrete goal to follow, which results in bringing more people into town and making things livelier.
The customization aspect is wonderful, the player is not restricted to Girl-Only or Boy-Only looks, a male character can wear a dress if they want and female characters can opt to have their hair cut as one of the boys' hairdos.
The game does have the problem that time management can be a little difficult at first and that it can still be really slow at times. Some things simply don't unlock until their pre-determined time, no matter how well you do, so you have to wait... or use the online multiplayer function to hopefully get or ask for certain items you may need.
Overall, though, A New Beginning is a very fun game to play.
